Tweedy: June 28, 2015 Solid Sound Festival (North Adams, MA) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Our recording of one of the earliest Tweedy performances, at last year’s Mountain Jam, caught fire on the Internet. Before that show, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the new father-son band. While that performance was good, it didn’t fully predict the quality of the now-released Sukierae album, which (in my view) compares favorably to some of Wilco’s more recent efforts. Now, just over a year on, Tweedy is a force of its own, as Jeff and Spencer Tweedy let us know forcefully when they played Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival. This sprawling two hour and fifteen minute set, replete with covers, Tweedy songs, Wilco songs, songs from other side projects (Loose Fur, most notably), and special guests, seems like a window into what Jeff Tweedy wants this band to be. If Wilco will always be the man’s flagship and true moneymaker, Tweedy is where he gets to have fun. Here we have the Tweedys joined by all manner of Solid Sound guests, from Nels Cline to Ryley Walker, Bill Frisell to Cibo Matto. Would Wilco cover a Madonna song? Probably not — but with Tweedy, it didn’t even feel out of place. The set’s final number, a rousing “California Stars,” featured just about everybody on stage, and though this took place on the East Coast, the moment captured the wistful romance of that song perfectly.

Our friend gr8fulpete recorded this set with Neumann KM185 hypercardiod microphones. Other than some gusts of wind noise that can’t be avoided, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Ty Segall: June 26, 2015 Rough Trade NYC – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Two things you can’t say about Ty Segall: That he doesn’t work hard enough, and that his songs don’t stand up without all the fuzz attached. While a lot of garage rock acts would fall apart without the 110dB of drums and electric guitars around them, what this series of acoustic shows by Segall around the New York area a few weeks ago proved was exactly how good his songs are on their own. If it wasn’t quite as revelatory as Nirvana Unplugged, these shows had much more in terms of set size and variety.

This show at Rough Trade was the second of Ty’s two performances of the night, following stints at Baby’s All Right (coming soon), Bell House, and Mercury Lounge earlier the same night (download here). By the time the set began around midnight, Ty was loose and ready to have a good time, making this set, possibly even more than the others, an extravaganza of both new material and covers both common (two Beatles tunes and Neil Diamond) and obscure (the Groundhogs and the Urinals). Joined again by Cory Hanson of Wand (who we recorded earlier this year), Ty took us on a winding tour through his material, both from Ty Segall Band and Fuzz, and it was hard to pick a favorite among them. A few repeats of the Mercury set are here, but most of this is new, including one song we don’t have the title for, tentatively called “She Is A Beam.” In the acoustic set, Segall occupies a comfortable place between cafe troubadour and the impish garage-rock persona for which he’s better known. That is,  he’ll deliver a moving “Bob Dylan Blues” to kick things off — but as soon as the applause goes up, he’s kidding around about dropping his pick in his guitar. Ty’s music is serious, but he doesn’t take himself too seriously. That humility is not only part of why his popularity continues to explode, but it makes him the kind of guy who’s willing to take chances, such as these four shows. We’re here to tell you that the experiment succeeded.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Kameron Biehl of Rough Trade and Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Alejandro Rose-Garcia, lately of Austin, seems poised for bigger stages these days as his Shakey Graves project starts to take off on the wings of its Nashville connections and blues-rock influences. Graves pulled down a sizable crowd for this set at Mountain Jam, and made the very most of it, giving a muscular full-band performance that threatened to overwhelm his latest album, And the War Came, to task. Where that album’s highlights come mostly from his collaborations with Esme Patterson — particularly on “Dearly Departed,” Shakey Graves proved that what he really needed all along was more electric guitar and a drummer who’d really hit the skins. “Family and Genus,” in particular, barely felt like the same song, with some serious soloing and the vocals to go with it. Similarly, Rose-Garcia was a natural with the crowd, sharing a confessional tale and a solid message (always be there for your friends) before launching into the new song “Tomorrow.” There was at least one other new song on offer here, along with several that don’t appear on And the War Came, but what struck me, again and again, was how much more alive this music seems in the live setting, and how much Rose-Garcia benefits from the more “full-band” sound. He would go on to play Bonnaroo a few days after this, and I have no doubt he earned a similarly large following there.

hi and lo and I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4 microphones and a high-end Sonosax analog preamp. There is some evident wind noise at points, but for an outdoor recording in these conditions, the sound quality is quite good. Enjoy!

Gov’t Mule: June 6, 2015 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Pretty much everything to like about Mountain Jam flows from Warren Haynes and his band Gov’t Mule. As one of the original founders of the festival, Haynes and his fellow participants in Radio Woodstock built something that grew organically around the kind of music they wanted to make and to listen to. That means 60s and 70s-inspired music with improvisational leanings that usually returns to its classic rock core — a pretty apt description of Gov’t Mule. Since the festival was purchased by an app company, some of that magic has been lost in favor of the expected deluge of commercialization and lineup considerations that tend more toward packing in the day-trippers versus creating a cohesive vibe. So, as irritating as it might have been to realize that Mule would be followed by a derivative band with no business being there, it felt good to enjoy what they were doing, and be grateful that they were still giving it their all. In fact, this was Mule’s second outing at the festival, after their epic “Dark Side of the Mule” set from the night before, to go with their latest album. So, if this set was “only” two hours, Mule can more than be forgiven. Perhaps in a covering mood after the night of Floyd just before, Mule closed this one out with a slew of covers, including “Working Class Hero,” “She Said She Said,” “Tomorrow Never Comes,” and a version of the band’s own “Mule” that featured an extended jam into Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” No matter how things may change, you can’t say that Mule doesn’t respect the past.

Ryley Walker: June 26, 2015 Le Poisson Rouge

Ryley Walker has been a can’t-miss for me on every single tour that has taken him through New York this year, the latest being this date at Le Poisson Rouge with Jessica Pratt. What is so remarkable about the five performances we have covered since September of last year is that every single one has been different, including the cast of performers. While Ryley’s a redoubtable solo artist, where he truly shines is in his ensemble, consisting of Chicago-based jazz artists who’ve played with Ryley on and off for years. On this night, he not only had the full compliment of  his “regular” players, with Ryan Jewell on drums, Ben Boye on keys, Brian Sulpizio on electric guitar, and Anton Hatwich on bass, but also a horn section consisting of Levon Henry on sax and Jamie Branch on trumpet. The results were simply magical; over 41 minutes, Ryley and the players turned these three songs into long-form jazz meditations. If Ryley’s albums fall firmly enough into the “folk” camp, his live show is a completely different beast, something that lives as close musically to the Grateful Dead and free jazz as to Van Morrison or Bob Dylan.

The brand-new song “Sullen Mind,” lyrically, is a hangover tune, a drunk’s lament, and Ryley summons the narrator’s loneliness and pain with relatively few lyrics, delivered at times with a slur that leaps to a howl. The ensemble follows with urgency, their collective sound growing insistent and dark, almost an analog for the troubled mind of the story. Seated just a few feet from Ryley, it was chill-inducing to watch and hear the song unfold, as the players barely needed a nod from their leader to storm forward from the last chorus into a climactic outro. The brass didn’t show up until the new track “Funny Thing She Said,” but that song made an immediate impact on a song that made a perfect bookend to “Sullen Mind,” both of them chill-inducing laments. And lest the lone album track played — “Primrose Green” — get short shrift, it, too, soared on the one-two punch of Brian Sulpizio and Walker on guitars, a poppy-field tripper of a track that makes you want to find some of the substance name-dropped in the title. As Ryley and his band headed off to Solid Sound Festival, more touring upstate and elsewhere, and finally back home to Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival, they are firing on all cylinders, a live unit at or near the peak of their powers. At this point, in festival-land, they’re still playing early — don’t miss them.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Le Poisson Rouge team, combined with Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones clamped to the soundboard booth and a split pair of DPA 4061 omnidirectional microphones on the stage. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Lake Street Dive: June 7, 2015 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Much has changed since we saw Lake Street Dive open for the Infamous Stringdusters three years ago. Mainly, they’re a much, much more popular band. You won’t see this band, whose 2014 album Bad Self Portraits has proven to be their breakout, opening for acts at 500-capacity venues anymore, or playing “I Want You Back” to street corner passersby, as they did way back in the beginning. As is refreshingly the case from time to time, the band’s success seems to be rooted in talent — even at that show in 2012, the unit’s professionalism was clear. Though at the time I compared them to Alabama Shakes, Lake Street Dive’s south-meets-Motown style leans to the shinier, more theatrical side of things, mostly free of grit. “Theatrical” is the word that comes to mind most often with this band, who perform with both a Broadway-like precision and take advantage of Rachael Price’s similarly trained-sounding voice. Unsurprising detail: the band met at the New England Conservatory. This is what happens when a bunch of serious players and students of jazz decide to take on pop music: It’s a bit like an NFL quarterback deciding to go throw some passes with his old high school team.

That made it almost funny to hear Lake Street Dive playing to a muddy Mountain Jam field in the Catskills, delivering effortless vocal harmonies such as on “Look At What Mistake.” If the traditional “jam band” festivals revel to a degree in unpredictability, well, that’s one of many reasons this “Jam” isn’t really a jam-band festival anymore. This was Lake Street Dive’s last show of the tour, as they told us, but you’d have been hard pressed to hear a hint of weariness anywhere from the band. Price did, of course, point out that they try to “eat their vegetables” and treat themselves right on tour, and that I’d believe. She followed that statement, ironically, with the song “I Deserve To Do Something Wrong,” with its distinct Jackson 5 vibe. That was a new song written by the band’s bass player, Bridget Kearney, and it was followed by another new one, “I Don’t Care About You,” from drummer Michael Calabrese. Another plus for this band — they’re as collaborative and consistent in songwriting duties as they are in musical ones.

It wouldn’t be a Mountain Jam set without some choice covers, and Lake Street Dive chose wisely, serving up a version of Annie Lennox’s “Walking On Broken Glass” that Price knocked out of the park, as well as jamming into Van Halen’s “Jump” out of the Bad Self Portraits favorite “Bobby Tanqueray,” which itself is one of the band’s harder-rocking numbers. The band closed the set with “You Go Down Smooth,” and those words are as true of the band itself as of the lover described in the song. This is a positive, grateful group of pros who know where they came from. It’s not hard to guess where they’re headed.

The Space Merchants: June 8, 2015 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Brooklyn’s The Space Merchants gathered us together a couple Mondays ago at Rough Trade to celebrate the release of their stellar self-titled debut album on the tiny imprint Aqualamb Records. The band’s sound boasts a cohesive but diverse set of rock influences, from the Velvet Underground to Black Sabbath to Bobbie Gentry (per a recent profile), and you feel the weight of those influences equally in a number of songs (take, for example, the stellar “One Cut Like the Moon”). Onstage, the Merchants are a cohesive unit both when they’re playing and not — I laughed at guitarist/singer Michael Guggino and keyboardist/singer Ani Monteleone bantering about who, exactly, the band’s rather novel release format (a 100-page book of custom images, with a download code at the back) was intended for. Guggino comes to the Merchants from beloved Brooklyn “stoner punk boogie metal” band Mount Olympus, which didn’t take itself very seriously (songs like “Get Yer Ass to Mars”), but musically was no joke, and we recently caught drummer Carter Logan playing with his other band, Jim Jarmusch and Jozef Van Wissim’s SQÜRL, at this very venue. Keyboardist/vocalist Monteleone and bassist Aileen Brophy have popped up in a variety of local bands and music-related ventures as well, making it a bit less surprising that The Space Merchants would be so dialed-in at a relatively early point in their cycle (not that they haven’t already opened for Acid Mothers Temple, among others).

Though they lead off the night, the Merchants played a tight set to a full floor, launching straight away into the stoner-metal crunch of “Kiss The Sky,” which gave Guggino a chance at some guitar pyrotechnics that would’ve made Mount Olympus proud. After the almost comically upbeat “Beatniks” the band took us back to earth with the sludgy “1000 Years of Boredom.” Then we got a non-album track, “Transcendental Superconscious State,” which with any luck will end up on official release somewhere. For my money, the deep groove of “One Cut Like the Moon” makes it my favorite of the band’s songs, but it’s hard to argue with “Evil Itch,” the song that they chose to close with, and the album’s lead single. Monteleone’s lead vocal, the mid-song tempo downshift, and the surge that follows sound exactly like Magnet described it — “the emerging days of California’s acid-rock scene and the final days of Woodstock.” With many positive mentions coming in for the record, and with a live show like this, The Space Merchants should be a don’t-miss on your Brooklyn concert schedule.

Trigger Hippy: June 5, 2015 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

If God was one of us here at Mountain Jam, he probably would’ve staved off the torrential rain that started falling just after this set by supergroup Trigger Hippy, which features Joan Osborne, Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman, session guitarist Tom Bukovac, singer/songwriter and Black Crowes guitarist Jackie Greene and bassist Nick Govrik. The band’s sound is about what you’d expect from this combination of players — Crowes-style bluesy rock that replaces the tenor twang of Chris Robinson with Osborne, packed around some dense riffage. Along with some of the band’s originals, they played some of the day’s more interesting covers (that is to say, not just extremely popular 70s rock hits). In this case, we got Aretha Franklin and Albert Collins tunes, both of which suggest the influences that led to this band. With each artist having a complimentary background and style, this supergroup may not quite be more than the sum of its parts, but the sum of these parts was more than enough to make Trigger Hippy a worthwhile addition to this year’s Mountain Jam lineup.

I recorded this set from an optimal spot next to the soundboard cage with MBHO microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Heartless Bastards: June 15, 2015 Webster Hall – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After more than a decade of music, the Heartless Bastards continue to keep things fresh. Erika Wennerstrom, the group’s frontwoman, heart, and soul, continues to refine what has proven to be one of the great rock voices of the early 21st century, defining a sound that is contemporary and classic. Those of us who heard the show’s opening intro now know where it comes from — Erika’s grandmother, who had quite the pipes of her own.

At this juncture, the Bastards are past the point of being either a hot new thing or a flash in the pan. Rolling into their fifth proper album — their second for Partisan Records — the band sounds like the experienced travelers they are, with a honed sound and a stable of fans who follow it. This show at Webster Hall served as the night-before release show for Restless Ones, and became the first exposure to several of the new songs for most of us. This was the band’s longest show we’ve seen yet, and one that let them try on a number of different sonic textures from song to song. The new songs veer a bit further afield from the bluesy barroom sound of the band’s earlier efforts, as on “Gates of Dawn.” That song’s placement at the front of this set, between the very straightforward “Simple Feeling” and “Gotta Have Rock N’ Roll,” underscored the point. As is often the case, the band let things stretch out for its epic, Sabbath-inspired “Down In the Canyon,” which followed the new album’s “Into the Light,” one of several decidedly downbeat songs on the new record. If the printed setlist was to be believed, our encore had “All This Time” planned, but was dropped in favor of “Only For You,” which was followed by one of the new record’s most stylistically adventurous songs yet, the noise-dirge “Tristessa.” Even without one of our all-time favorite Bastards songs, this was easily one of the strongest sets we’ve seen yet from this band.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones mounted inside the soundboard cage combined with a stereo feed from the band’s touring FOH, Reggie. While most of one encore song (“Only For You”) was lost due to technical problems, the sound of the remainder is outstanding. Enjoy!

Dopapod: June 6, 2015 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

For a festival called a “Jam,” this year’s Mountain Jam was pretty light on “jam” bands. Luckily, they picked one of the very finest up and comers in the genre to play a Saturday afternoon as well as a late night set. Dopapod aren’t a household name in the wider world (Rolling Stone picked them as a “best kept secret” for the upcoming Bonnaroo), but to those in the scene, they are one of the most promising improvisational bands to come along in a generation. While many of their contemporaries ply the “electronica with real instruments” tack, Dopapod feel harder to pin down and more old school, drawing inspiration from rock, jazz, prog, metal and — yes — electronic music to create something that’ll keep even non-twisted listeners happy. The foursome have a rock-solid musicality, able to flow seamlessly between improv and pre-written material in their songs (witness one of their constant epics, “Trapper Keeper,” streaming below). For my money, the band’s real anchor is keyboardist Eli Winderman, whose bank of keys is what gives the band such a wide palette to play with. This day’s set felt less “electronic” and more “funk” than some of their shows, and that worked well here. Even in the woefully short 56 minutes (their normal sets run to the two to two and a half hour range), those of us who didn’t know the band well heard a lot of reasons to pay closer attention.

hi and lo and I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4 microphones from a nice location near the soundboard. We got hit this afternoon by occasional spots of wind, but the overall quality is excellent. Enjoy!
