Alabama Shakes: June 7, 2015 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It made good sense for Alabama Shakes to end this year’s Mountain Jam, as they ended it on the highest of notes.

By the time you had sat through three or even four days of this year’s festival, you might be forgiven for wondering if anything happened musically in this country since 1972. With exceptions, there were far too many “me-too” bands so slavishly devoted to their heroes that they could only impress the crowd by covering well-known songs by bands superior to them. Consider some of the headliners: Friday, a washed-up warhorse from a legendary 70s act was followed by … a band covering Dark Side of the Moon and other Pink Floyd songs. Saturday, a knockoff of a band from the late 90s-2000s played its bloozy bar rock songs best known for their hard-hitting impact on TV commercials and the opening credits for an HBO sitcom. Just before that band came on, the act before them played a bunch of Beatles and John Lennon songs.

Alabama Shakes could have been nothing more than a “me too” band, and would have been a striking one. There’s no question that Brittany Howard’s vocal style owes a debt to Etta James, Janis Joplin and several others, but what Howard and her band have accomplished with their second album, Sound & Color, moves them firmly into a different class. The band has taken the pieces they already had — a love of classic rock and soul, a cohesive unit, and a frontwoman with an earth-shaking voice and the presence to match — and used them to create daring new songs that push the conversation forward. It’s not an accident that one of the best songs played at this show, “Future People,” uses the word future. Over and over again, Alabama Shakes’ latest work keeps proving that they want more — particularly the fellow new album tracks “Sound & Color” and “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Maybe some people were comfortable adding the Shakes to their Spotify playlists of retro sounds and leaving it at that. The Shakes were not. The Shakes — a working-class band from rural Alabama who only made it onto this stage by working like hell — took a risk.

It’s widely known that the Shakes began life as a cover band, covering 70s standards in local bars. Here, in front of tens of thousands splayed across a mountainside, Howard paused late in the set to thank the crowd for giving the band the opportunity to do what they loved doing. Their last album pulled down three (losing) Grammy nominations. If there’s any justice in the world, this album ought to win one. By the way, in a rare bit of commercial justice, Sound & Color debuted at #1 in the United States. Alabama Shakes are a cover band no more.

Hiss Golden Messenger: June 2, 2015 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Maybe an opening set by Hiss Golden Messenger at Music Hall of Williamsburg doesn’t merit quite the word count I gave April’s homecoming show at Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, NC. But it was the biggest New York stage on which I’ve seen this band, and that makes it another milestone for M.C. Taylor and his fellow travelers. Fresh off a European tour, the band spent this first of two nights in New York opening for the Tallest Man on Earth, but judging the room capacity at the start of this set, HGM was the night’s draw for many of us. This was almost the exact same band we saw back at Haw River — Taylor, bassist Brad Cook, his brother Phil on keys, and Matt McCaughan on drums — minus William Tyler.

Clearly, this team is road-tested and hitting their stride, seeming to have found an even deeper, jammier groove than when we saw them in North Carolina. This sound gels well with the Lateness of Dancers record, so it makes sense that its songs — “Southern Grammar” and “I’m A Raven (Shake Children)” feel like centerpieces on this run. We were also thrilled to hear the new song “Say It Like You Mean It” for the second time. It’s possibly the most “rock” song the band has done to date, and should be a live staple for the foreseeable future. But even at that, it ended up being a Poor Moon song that stole this particular show, as the journeyman sax player Michael Lewis joined the band for the definitive live version of “Blue Country Mystic,” with Lewis adding a new layer to a song whose current live arrangement already feels transformed from its album version. While you’d always prefer to see a band you love as a headliner, I suspect this and some even higher-profile opening slots are going to earn HGM a lot of new fans, and they seem poised and ready to do it.

HGM will remain on the road June and July, touring with My Morning Jacket, hitting festivals, and returning to the general vicinity of NYC on July 25 for a show at Woodstock’s Bearsville Theater. See all the dates here.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals: June 5, 2015 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals rescued a soggy second day of Mountain Jam with a set of big-tent, unselfconscious seventies rock. Straight off the plane from a gig with The Rolling Stones, Potter hit the stage determined to lift the spirits of this crowd. We needed it — we’d had rain dumped on us for several hours. Comfortable with her sexuality and determined to ride the line between empowerment and objectification, Potter shook her ass, shod her boots, and eventually part of her top to get this crowd awake. But really, she could’ve succeeded anyway. Potter has the kind of huge, unapologetically rock voice that isn’t likely to be a hit with ironists but can command a stadium full of people. Her latest record, The Lion, the Beast, the Beat has continued to make waves live, as we saw at the Capitol Theatre back in 2013. Its title track was the show’s second-to-last closer, and it was a highlight, as was her cover of Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl” that featured the festival’s self-appointed resident shredder, Warren Haynes, on guitar.

Even more importantly, Potter has been airing new material. Along with new single “Alive Tonight,” Potter played a brand-new song for the first time, called “Empty Heart.” No matter how wet we once were, Potter managed to convince everyone to surround her, summoning the sense of community that had been missing as people ran for cover. It didn’t matter if “Paris (Ohh La La)” was ridiculously over the top as it closed the set — including its multi-member drum solo — by the time it came around, Grace Potter had earned it.

I recorded this set from a nice position toward the front of the soundboard cage with MBHO cardiod microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

ST 37: May 6, 2015 Knitting Factory and May 7, 2015 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

ST 37 have been at the game longer than some percentage of their audience had probably been alive. These two NYC sets gave us a much-appreciated amount of exposure to the Austin band, as neither of us had seen them before. Their style, which I might call “psychedelic hardcore”, lends itself to the live setting, where they get the chance to experiment and let their songs grow. We were fortunate enough to catch both sets at Knitting Factory and Mercury Lounge that featured completely different setlists. In both cases, we got a nice taste of the band’s range, from more straight-up hardcore numbers like “White Comanche” to meditative jam numbers like “KBDP (Karen Black’s Demerol Patch),” which sounds a bit like the drug referenced in the title. Between these two killer sets, the default winner almost has to be the Mercury set, where tourmate Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple joined the band for “Just You.” Make sure to make a date with ST 37 the next time they’re out your way.

Both of these sets were recorded with Schoeps microphones (mine being MK41V supercardiods, nyctaper’s being CCM4 cardiods) and soundboard feeds. The sound quality of both is excellent. Enjoy!

Föllakzoid: May 23, 2015 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Chilean band Föllakzoid have a habit of latching you into their deep grooves and not letting up, each song building like a little universe around monotones to create pieces that fall squarely in the post-Krautrock camp. The artist Uwe Schmidt, better known as Atom TM, joined the band for their brand new record, III, and the electronic influence was evident at this show, as the band created trancelike numbers that lent themselves as much to dancing as to chilling out. There are hints of U.S.-based compatriots like Moon Duo here, but this music comes across are more beat-focused and less “rock.”

This show at Rough Trade marked a relatively rare return by the band to the U.S., and that was emphasized by the long line to get in the door. Some were no doubt there early to see Jim Jarmusch and Jozef van Wissem’s Squrl take the stage first, but the crowd only filled in further by the time Föllakzoid took the stage. From single, flickering beats, “Electric” grew into the roiling kickoff track from III that we’ve all come to love, followed by that album’s centerpiece, “Piure.” By the time those two songs ended, the show was already thirty-two minutes in. Those hoping for standard “psychedelic” fare might have wondered what they had walked into at that point; fortunately, the people here got it, and started dancing. From there, they turned back to their excellent previous effort, II, for the last four songs — “99,” “9,” “Trees,” and “Rivers.” The set’s intensity peaked at “Trees,” which felt like the biggest rock number of the bunch, making “Rivers” and its slightly more subdued pace the right way to go out. We hope these guys will be back soon.

Worthless: May 6, 2015 Knitting Factory – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Don’t freak out if you slap the new Worthless LP, All My Friends Are Stone, on the turntable and think your deck has a speed problem. All those sonic contortions are just the band fuckin’ with yr head, man. The LP has already garnered a cult following (look at what the freaky version is going for on Discogs) and there’s a good reason why. This show at the Knitting Factory, a near-seamless presentation that began with the song “Rips”, wound its way back to it during the set, and then closed with it, was a fresh take on improvisational psychedelic rock with a distinct style. Though tonight’s show didn’t feature any visuals, Worthless is the project of Curtis Godino of the incredible Drippy Eye Projections, a crew whose all-analog liquid light shows make every show memorable. Although they are geographically spread out (Florida and Brooklyn) — and haven’t been a proper “band” for that long — Worthless feels every bit the veteran unit, a big, organ-driven sound poised to melt minds at places like “Levitation” (or as I still prefer to call it, Austin Psych Fest). All of these songs appeared to be new (or at least, don’t make an appearance on any of their bandcamp stuff), and I dug the lot of them, especially “Daydreaming Your Life Away”. Their name may be what it is, but there’s nothing worthless about this band. Keep paying attention.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41V microphones and a soundboard feed from the Knit engineer Mikey. There are a couple of brief moments where you can hear me adjusting the microphones in the first couple of minutes, but it’s smooth sailing after that. Enjoy!

William Tyler: May 5, 2015 Bowery Ballroom & April 18, 2015 Chaz’s Bull City Records (Durham, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

William Tyler is a force. “That was a tragic song, in case you guys couldn’t pick up on that, because the lyrics are so clear” he laughed at Bowery Ballroom, where we caught him last week opening for Mikal Cronin. But Tyler might be wrong there. His playing is of such emotional heft that you can feel what he’s trying to say with his guitar, both wielded with grace and experimental verve. These two very different sets covered both some of the Lambchop guitarist’s newest solo material (the outstanding “Highway Anxiety”) along with tracks from his first solo outing, Deseret Canyon. That release saw its initial Merge reissue on Record Store Day show at Chaz’s Bull City Records, so it was appropriate that Tyler brought out two of its most treasured gems, “The Waltz of the Circassian Beauties” and “Crystal Palace, Sea of Glass” at that show. If you missed Deseret on Record Store Day, fear not: Merge will be bringing it out in wider release come early June.

It’s a testament to Tyler’s abilities as a player and storyteller that he kept the crowd whisper-quiet at Bowery, where the new track found itself nestled along nicely next to beloved songs from Impossible Truth and 2010’s Behold the Spirit. People may have been there to witness Cronin’s power-pop headlining affair, but they were smart enough to pay attention as Tyler played “Hotel Catatonia” — preceded by a typically Tyleresque introduction involving being locked in a TCBY freezer. (For the New Yorkers in the audience, that’d be The Country’s Best Yogurt). Likewise, the affair in North Carolina felt more like a gathering of friends that a proper concert, and that was just right for the afternoon vibe outside of Chaz’s. It was a great day to be outside, and a great day to be a music fan. It’s always a great day to see William Tyler, which is a good thing — Northeast crowds will get plenty of opportunities when he tours in June with Real Estate and Ty Segall.

I recorded the Bowery set with a soundboard feed from the legendary Kenny, together with Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones. The Bull City show was primarily a board feed from John Koelle, plus Schoeps MK4V microphones in front of the stage. The sound quality it outstanding. Enjoy!

Mikal Cronin: May 5, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Mikal Cronin is a master of power pop, combining the Big Star sound with punk’s rawer side. His latest for Merge RecordsMCIII, finds the Ty Segall affiliate more in the “pop” camp than ever, with spit-shined production and chorus after chorus that you can’t forget. This show at Bowery Ballroom celebrated the release of MCIII, but found Cronin skipping around his catalog, everything from the MCII favorite “See It My Way” to “Apathy”, “Green and Blue” and others from his debut.

Since we last saw him at Hopscotch in 2013, Cronin has grown even more comfortable at center stage, commanding the sold-out house throughout the night. The new album is an evolution for Cronin, taking him further from the fertile San Francisco garage-rock camp from which he came and further into music’s most accessible realms, and it seems to be working for him. Perhaps the strongest performance came mid-set, when “Feel Like” caught everyone’s ear. It’s a straightforward song both musically and lyrically, and it’s also impossible not to hum for days after. This music practically screams to be heard at summer festivals, in car stereos, at lake- and beach-houses. And, I suspect it will be.

Acid Mothers Temple’s yearly trip to New York has become a similarly regular event for this site, as we’ve caught almost every New York tour since 2010. The Japanese psychedelic rock veterans continue to get better, combining their can’t-miss material with fresh, bizarre and different new explorations of sound. This night at the Knitting Factory (the first of two in NYC, both of which we covered) found the band ready to put on a high-octane show, crossing-guitars in the air, banging their heads, and making jokes.  The brand-new “Benzaiten”, from their 2015 CD, is an instant classic, starting with harder, almost-metal tones before veering into free-jazz-like Japanese folk. The band played a total of eight songs (counting one jam number and an as-yet-unnamed new song) that stretched the 90 minutes-plus to the limit. For the first time since I’ve seen them, the band closed out on “Cometary Orbital Drive”, which came on the heels of a spaced-out new jam number. “Cometary” is one of my favorite songs from the band’s catalog, and it made for a perfect way to end the night.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Knit engineer Mikey, together with Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Mac McCaughan: April 18, 2015 Chaz’s Bull City Records (Durham, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

What you first notice when you hear Mac McCaughan play Superchunk and other material of his solo is how it puts the band’s most vital characteristic front and center: lyrics. It’s not that you wouldn’t like to also hear the surge and kick of a backbeat to go with that plaintive voice that still sounds like a 22-year old; it’s just that, without as much racket, you finally get a chance to hear and feel what Mac (and by extension, his band) had to say. What you find are keenly-observed images — data piling up like magazines,  alligator clips on glasses, dancing on a propane tank, somewhere deep in the country — that curdle a certain kind of nostalgia, for places you may or may not have been, people you probably don’t know. People say that Superchunk, as a band, has gotten older with grace, and a listen to Mac’s words, and his style, proves that out. He wears his older words well, even as they sidle up to the new.

Mac (not to mention his co-owned label Merge) was a huge part of the success of this Record Store Day show at Chaz’s Bull City Records in Durham, NC. Serving as the leadoff for the three Merge bands on the bill, Mac drew in an instant crowd, many of them no-doubt hungry to hear tunes from his brand-new Merge release, Non-Believers. Indeed, we got three songs’ worth here, plus a mix of old and new Superchunk. But one of my biggest favorites was the lone Portastatic number, “Drill Me”, from the newly-reissued 2003 LP, The Summer of the Shark, a song that takes aim at existential doubt with some of Mac’s best lyrics yet. Just before tearing into “Digging For Something” to close out his set, Mac exhorted us to all to support our local record stores every day of the year. Over his own career, Mac has given us plenty of excuses to do so.
