The Coathangers: June 24, 2011 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

If there’s a really an identifiable punk/garage “ethic”, the Coathangers do it right. The band plays their instruments with abandon, writes songs that tell it straight, and at their wild live shows, they don’t hold anything back or pull any punches. At their most recent NYC show a couple of weeks back at DIY venue 285 Kent, the Coathangers played a beyond-punk-length set that was extraordinarily entertaining for all the right reasons. Their energy, sense of humor, and apparent disregard for convention was evident from the outset — “Johnny” is a screaming punk song that set the tone that continued throughout songs like “Gettin Mad and Pumpin Iron”, “Nestle in My Boobies” and early 7″ release “Shake Shake” (streaming below). In between, the band performed much of their brand new release Larceny & Old Lace (Suicide Squeeze). As they were faced with an opening set deadline, the band continued to play through house music and ultimately when the microphone power was cut, performed the last song completely off-mic. It didn’t seem to matter though, as the massive crowd participation propelled the Coathangers to the finish.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones on an eight-foot stand next to the soundboard and mixed it with a vocal-heavy soundboard feed. This room presents many audio challenges and the mix and balance of this recording was a difficult prospect. We’ve done the best under the circumstances, and hope you enjoy!

Savoir Adore: June 26, 2011 Vivo In Vino – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The latest installment of the outstanding music and wine concert series Vivo In Vino featured the music of Savoir Adore. Two Sundays ago, the Brooklyn-based dream/indie pop band performed a tight hour-long set featuring songs from their excellent debut album In The Wooded Forest and several new songs. The sumptuous harmonies of lead guitarist Paul Hammer and guitarist/accordionist Deidre Muro were perfectly fit for the intimate In Vino surroundings. Highlights included the high energy encore of “Bodies”, new song “Loveliest Creature”, and non-album track “Sparrow” (streaming below). From our vantage point at the front of the stage, Savoir Adore was a pleasure to behold — expect to see much more of them on nyctaper.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones at the front of the stage and directed at the rhythm section (right channel) and lead guitar (right channel). The microphone recording is mixed with a feed from the soundboard (vocals and accordion) and all four channels were balanced in post-production. The result is a superb capture of this intimate show. Enjoy!

Young Adults: June 19, 2011 Public Assembly (Northside) – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

June 30, 2011

Young Adults are a talented and energetic band with a sound that can best be described as traditional Boston punk. The band contains three 20-somethings who would sound just as comfortable on a 1984 bill with Volcano Suns. On Sunday night, Young Adults had the unenviable task of playing the final spot on the second stage of the NYCTaper Northside Festival showcase. Undeterred by the hour or the placement, they simply ripped up the room with a thirty-minute set of material from their debut album Black Hole with one new number. We certainly expect to hear more from Young Adults in the future, as this set and their set on Saturday at Northside drew raves.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones mounted above the soundboard booth. Unfortunately, technical snafus marred the board feed, so that this is a straight audience recording. Nevertheless, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida: June 17, 2011 Secret Project Robot (Rated O Set) – Flac and MP3 Download + Streaming Song

June 27, 2011

[photo by martin glenn & julie ruiz from A Horse With No Name Photography]

The second piece of Oneida’s Thank Your Parents trilogy is itself a three-pronged release. Rated O is the most ambitious album of the three and last Friday at Secret Project Robot, the band undertook the huge task of playing the 3-album set straight through. And even then, Oneida took liberties with the music and stretched the two-hour album to nearly two and half. The songs themselves resembled their recorded counterparts but in the live setting, Oneida stretched and mutated the pieces into vehicles for all kinds of improvisation. The very stylistic elements that encompass the varied genres of Oneida music were all featured during the lengthy set — from noise (“End of Time”) to ambient (“O”) to krautrock (“Ghost in the Room” streaming below) to punk (“It Was a Wall”). Rated O has it all, and Oneida did it all.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Preteen Weaponry set and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida has completed the multi-year project called Thank Your Parents — a three album musical endeavor meant to represent the vast musical expressions for which this band is capable. This past weekend, the Parents trilogy was celebrated with a three-day long performance which encompassed on Friday the performance of the first two records of the trilogy, Preteen Weaponry and Rated O. Saturday was dedicated to a full day of ocropolis-like improvisational pieces replete with guest appearances, and Sunday was the daybreak complete play of 2011’s final piece Absolute II. Friday night’s show began with the most controlled set of the weekend — a faithful run through the first part of the trilogy, 2008’s Preteen Weaponry. That year we recorded one of the few complete performances of the album at of all places the South Street Seaport. It was a concert on a bleak rainy day in a strange locale, but Oneida ripped through the album and proved that a suite of three lengthy instrumental pieces could be compelling even out of its element. On Friday under the inventive light displays and among the art installations of Secret Project Robot, Oneida played virtually the same flawless set very much within their element. The multi-colored lights often masked the intricate work of the keyboardists while the PW lead instrument, Kid Millions’ drums, were prominently displayed throughout. As Bobby Matador stepped up from the keys to strap on an electric bass for the balance of the set, the band kicked into overdrive and the final twenty minutes of this first set of the weekend was Oneida at its very best.

This recording was captured with the Neumann microphones mounted in the back of the room and mixed a limited soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

We recorded the Rated O set and the dawn performance of Absolute II and those sets will be posted soon.

Deervana: June 19, 2011 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

June 22, 2011

On the final night of the Northside Festival, less than 24 hours after Courtney Love showed up to watch Wavves, Deer Tick performed a faithful 45-minute set of Nirvana covers at the Brooklyn Bowl under the moniker “Deervana”. Sunday night was the third “official” Deervana show (after SXSW and Bonnaroo), and is rumored to be the final performance of this particular cover show. Although John McCauley was just nine years old when Kurt Cobain died in 1994, the Deer Tick leader has impressed us from the very beginning as an “old soul” with an intrinsic understanding of the nuances of influential music. In the case of Cobain, this would include performing his music with the irreverence of punk rock’s freedom while appreciating the deep pain and ultimate tragedy of its protagonist. In true Nirvana fashion, Deervana eschewed the “hits” and instead presented a set of the less recognizable but no less powerful numbers, including “In Bloom”, “Serve the Servants” and “Lithium” (streaming below). Throughout, the music was the centerpiece until the the very end of the set when all heck broke loose and Deervana crashed their Fender guitars with the most appropriate object in this particular venue — bowling balls.

This set was recorded by our friend Erik, who stepped up when the rest of the NYCTaper crew was otherwise occupied. He received a mono board feed directly into an Edirol digital recorder. Although lacking in true stereo sound, the clarity of this recording is exceptional, and under the circumstances, its a superb capture of this memorable gig. Enjoy!

Atlas Sound: June 16, 2011 St. Cecelia’s Church – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The opening night of The Northside Festival offered a must-see event, Atlas Sound performing inside the beautiful and ornate Church of St. Cecelia in a remote section of Eastern Williamsburg. I last saw Atlas Sound eighteen months ago, at a memorable show at Bell House, but missed Bradford Cox’s solo project the last time he played in town. On Thursday night, Bradford brought a full slate of new material and performed six new songs in a thirteen song set. Of the new numbers, only “Terra Incognita” has a known title, but each of the songs represent a continued evolving of Cox’s ability to create intricate melodies through the precise synchronization of looped guitar effects. In the encore segment, Bradford went as far as to create an improvised song from whole cloth that miraculously sounded nearly complete. It was quite an appropriate conclusion for a performance on the altar of a catholic church.

We recorded this set with the warmer DPA microphones on a stand elevated to 12 feet at a distance from the stage of approximately 30 feet and mixed it with a well balanced feed from the board. The natural reverb of the room compliments the clarity of the line feed for a superb recording. A caveat is that there are intermittent bits of static from the stage during the second half of the set, and one burst of stage noise during the first song. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss: June 11, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

June 14, 2011
By

[photo courtesy of Daniel Doherty and Impose Magazine. All Rights Reserved]

A friend recommended that I get to Bowery Ballroom early on Saturday night as to be there when Purling Hiss played their set opening for Kurt Vile. He called it amazing “guitar freakout” music. While Mike Polizze’s guitar is certainly the center of the band’s sound, Purling Hiss is more of an amalgam of styles — Harvey Milk’s sludgecore, Dinosaur Jr’s post-punk, and Stooges-style Detroit rock among them. The final result is no-nonsense guitar-oriented rock played at high volume, the higher the better. The set at Bowery featured three tracks from their new 6-song EP Lounge Lizards (Mexican Summer Records), due for release today, June 14. Lizards is the most “produced” of their studio releases, which tend toward the raw and lo-fi techniques. We are not sure whether the cleaner production is a step towards more recognition, but with a band whose live set is as impressive as we saw at Bowery last week, that kind of success is inevitable. Purling Hiss is currently on tour in the Northeast, which will carry them to an appearance at Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival from June 24-26.

I recorded this set at our standard balcony rail position with the four microphone rig. Bowery Ballroom has upgraded their soundboard, improving the already-best sounding room in the City. The quality of this recording is superb. Enjoy!

North Mississippi Allstars Duo: June 6, 2011 (Late Show) Iridium Jazz Club – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Les Paul passed away two summers ago at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of instrumental and stylistic invention unmatched by any person in modern music. As a continuing tribute to the man, his trio performs every Monday night at the Iridium Jazz Club with a regular rotation of distinguished guests from the worlds of blues, jazz and rock — all of whom cite Les as a continuing inspiration. On Monday night, blues-rock masters the North Mississippi Allstars performed two sets. We caught the late show, which began with a short set by the Trio. Luther and Cody Dickinson joined for the last two trio songs before launching into their own powerful set. While not the two-hours-plus we’ve seen in the last two years (here) and (here), the set contained several sweet moments, including a segue of “Po Maddie” and “Skinny Woman” that allowed Luther to stretch out and show his chops in the home of the late master. The band was also joined by Hook Herrera on blues harp for the classic “Rollin’ and Tumblin'”, a powerful version that we’re streaming below.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig set up at the railing of the raised seated area exactly 24 feet from the stage. There is some crowd chatter from the small room, but otherwise the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
