There are an infinite number of established artists who for a variety of reasons avoid their earliest work. Perhaps for the same reason we cringe when we see photos of ourselves as teenagers, musicians see their earliest work as immature and underdeveloped. For instance, Paul Simon is said to be embarrassed by the songwriting of the earliest Simon and Garfunkel works. On the flip side of this equation are the artists who lose the creative force and rely too heavily on their early material — i.e. the nostalgia acts. At Housing Works in November, Stereogum presented a performer who has expertly straddled this artistic enigma. Twenty-five years into her fruitful career, Suzanne Vega continues as a viable creative writer and performer, and fortunately for the longtime fans she also continues to embrace her earliest material. In the packed Bookstore Cafe on a chilly November Sunday night, Suzanne opened her set with “Marlene On The Wall”. Accompanied by the multi-talented Gerry Leonard, Suzanne offered an intimate duet version of the song that catapulted her career. With her voice as the centerpiece, “Marlene” is a number that at once provides a rich melody with lyrics that offer a complex perspective on a difficult relationship. The song also proved nearly three decades ago that Suzanne Vega was a fully formed artist from the outset, capable of introspective and mature lyrics coupled with a warm voice and a strong sense of melody. As she has now established her own record label, this year Suzanne has revisited these songs and re-recorded them for her “Close-Up” series. The Housing Works set featured many of the songs from the two current volumes (“Love Songs” and “People & Places”), including classic songs “Small Blue Thing”, “The Queen And The Soldier” and the closing numbers “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner”. Suzanne’s contemporary material was also well represented as she performed her contribution to the posthumous Sparklehorse/Dangermouse album “The Man Who Played God”, a song from her upcoming musical about the writer Carson McCullers (“The Instant of The Hour After”) and several songs that will appear on the anticipated 2011 releases of Volumes 3 and 4 of the Close-Up releases. As our readers can witness on this recording, all of these songs, old and new, were expertly delivered with the same level of proficiency and commitment. It is rare that an artist can balance her material with such precision.

Suzanne Vega will again perform in NYC on January 8, 2011 when she plays Town Hall with Marc Cohn.

This show was engineered by Suzanne’s soundman Phil Sullivan, who mixed it to perfection. My recording is a blend of his soundboard feed along with the DPA microphones placed at the center of the room about 30 feet back from the stage. As a result, the superb quality of this recording is perhaps unmatched by anything we’ve ever offered on this site. Enjoy!

Diamond Rings: December 4, 2010 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The man who I anointed the male Lady GaGa (followed by Pitchfork co-opting the comparison in their review of Special Affections) after he played the NYCTaper 2010 CMJ Show was at it again on a Saturday night early this month, and he remains on a roll. Glasslands has had some especially strong rosters lately, in part thanks to the efforts of PopGun Booking, and this was no exception, with ArpLine, Austra and Body Language also on the bill. But the tall, blonde man from Toronto was clearly the main draw. Don’t think that a one-man act cannot put on a rock-n-roll show; John O’Regan (Mr. Diamond Rings himself) gave that the lie big-time as he danced, played guitar, spazzed out, and rocked out all over the stage. If this is what he is capable of with no backup of any kind on the Glasslands stage, he might just be scary at the next level; even at this show, a creepy guy in the front was photographing his shoes and (from where I was sitting, at least) his crotch. But you can’t fault people for getting a little creepy – the sexual energy of O’Regan’s set is undeniable, and unlike really anything crossing most indie rock stages these days. He vamps, he flaunts, he owns the place. And O’Regan is about to gain a much wider audience for his music, too, as he begins at tour as the opening act for Robyn (tour dates here). She’d better be ready, or O’Regan just might blow her off the stage.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Glasslands staff and the DPA microphones. Other than some light distortion on the board feed during one track, the sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

The National: December 8, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The National last played NYC at Terminal 5 in July, a concert we covered for the site. Its hard to imagine that we would next see a band of that stature in Maxwell’s, but the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows bring surprises of all sizes. Although we were clued into this appearance earlier in the week (and the Village Voice spread our tweet), it was still pretty surreal to see the National take the stage in front of a hundred or so people. The band and their mini horn section managed to fit pretty comfortably on the stage, and they worked through a shortened version of the standard set. In a brief conversation I had with Bryce before the show, he remembered that the band had played Maxwell’s several times early in their history, and there were references during the show to those times. Despite how far they’ve come, The National still retain their perspective and the material was as authentic and powerful up close in the intimate venue as it was in the large ones they play now. The National will spend much of the first half of 2011 on tour in Europe, but we expect to see them again in NYC this Summer, although never again at a venue this compact.

We recorded this set with all six of our high-end microphones mixed in eight channels with a slight board mix. We used the Neumann’s for clarity, the DPAs for warmth and the Schoeps for the low end. The results are pretty outstanding. Enjoy!

Mission of Burma: December 5, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The other aspect of Hanukkah Night 5 that made it my personal favorite was the gift of Mission of Burma. We have seen them several times since their 2002 reunion (sadly never in the early 80s), but never like this. MOB was truly in the giving spirit on this Sunday night, as they delivered a truly unique set of music. The show opened with one of their oldest and most obscure songs “Nu Disco” — a number written in 1979 which is said to have spurred Roger Miller to add tape loops to the band. MOB then followed with six new songs, including one (“Hi-Fi”) we had heard before (in January at Bowery), and at least two debut performances. The second half of the set consisted of five diverse and eclectic covers, from Cream to Eno to the Wipers. The most striking cover was Clint Conley dead-on channeling Pete Shelley on the Buzzcocks’ “I Don’t Mind” (streaming below), but the band also played the heck out of a seven-minute version of the Wipers “Youth of America”.

Mission of Burma returns to the area in January when they’ll play two local gigs, Maxwell’s on January 28 and Bell House in Brooklyn on January 29.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Yo La Tengo set from this night, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Pontiak: November 20, 2010 Bell House – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Before the mighty Bardo Pond headlined the recent incarnation of the Memory Burn Psych Festival, heavy-rocking southerners Pontiak made sure nobody in the vicinity of the Bell House missed their louder-than-hell set. The Virginian siblings (the band is comprised of the brothers Van, Lain and Jennings Carney) opened up with one of their more accessible new numbers, the 70s-inspired “Young,” and from there, surged through several more songs from their 2010 release This Is Living, as well as classics from the rest of their catalog, including an epic closer of “Sun On Sun” segueing into “Shell Skull.” Pontiak’s music can find a variety of musical company; loose and improvisational enough to satisfy the psych rock set, but churning, riff-driven and structurally cohesive such that it won’t be lost on your average metal or rock fan, either. This set eschewed some of the quieter, more acoustic songs demonstrated on Living and some of the band’s earlier records in favor of the crowd-pleasers for, well, the kind of people who attend an event called the “Memory Burn Psych Festival”, and to great effect. Compared to on record, Van Carney’s vocals were buried most of the night under layers of guitars and drums like a distant spectre, but all the better to accentuate the vortex of guitars, bass and drums. Indeed, I was particularly gratified to see the band properly mixed by the Bell House staff on a killer system that gave full voice to their style. This was probably the most head-banging set of the evening, and for those who hadn’t crossed paths with Pontiak before, a revelation.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps microphones and a stereo soundboard feed, in the same manner as the Bardo Pond recording, and the results are equally outstanding. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 6, 2010 Maxwell’s – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah shows are an embarrassment of riches, as everyone knows. There are the extended set times; the cozy atmosphere of Hoboken’s inimitable Maxwell’s; the kinship among a group of the band’s most hardcore fans; the special guests; the comedians. But amidst all of that, what still drives the fanaticism around these show is, ultimately, a band that can shapeshift like few others. Especially at these shows, when you go to see Yo La Tengo, you never know what you’re going to get. On Wednesday the 1st, we saw the lighter side of the band, joking and playing Elvis covers; on Sunday the 5th, we saw the noisy, aggressive rock band that followed a set by Mission of Burma. On this night, we got the musically erudite record geeks, the band whose influences are far-ranging and frequently obscure, offering up a host of amazing covers. We got Bob Dylan’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” “Shut Up” by obscure 60s garage-rock band The Monks, The Beach Boys’ “Little Honda” (which they have, over time, effectively made their own), “This Ain’t the Summer of Love” by Blue Oyster Cult, a (this time) successful version of Paul Simon’s “Red Rubber Ball”, one of my personal favorite YLT covers, “You Can Have It All” and many more. And for guests, we were equally rewarded: Wilco’s Mikael Jorgenson joined for several numbers on keyboards, Antietam guitarist Tara Key on several others, and, for the encore, the legendary Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby, doing some of their own songs and more covers. The set closed with a stage full of the night’s musicians (plus comedian Eugene Mirman on theremin) covering The Fugs‘ nihilistic “Nothing.” It made for an ironic ending to a night that was all about affirmation and recognition: affirmation of the sheer joy and variety of music, and recognition of the rich diversity of artists that brought Yo La Tengo to this point.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps microphones and a stereo soundboard feed by the Maxwell’s staff. As with the 12/5 show, unfortunately we were not able to mix in an additional source from nyctaper’s Neumann mics, which is too bad. Nonetheless, the results are outstanding, as all of these shows have been. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 5, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

I’ll admit to being partial to the noisy and aggressive side of Yo La Tengo’s music. Perhaps due to the presence of Mission of Burma on the bill, or that MOB’s tech wiz Bob Weston participated in the YLT set, but this Sunday night of Hanukkah was the noisiest overall of the eight shows — and also my personal favorite. Early in the set, “Periodically Double or Triple” led directly into “The Room Got Heavy”, for the first energetic noisy segue of the night, but it was the show’s finale that set this night apart. Ira shed some blood (see photo) while switching guitars before the Richard Hell song, but as soon as the punk legend was covered the band ratcheted it up a notch. A ferocious “Drug Test” led into the punk version of “Double Dare” before giving way to the massive “Sugarcube” that finished with a cacophony of feedback, loops and guitar fuzz. “Mushroom Cloud of Hiss” rose out of the chaos and ended the set with more Weston-inspired sheets of sonic bliss. When the crowd caught its breath, the band returned with Mission of Burma and treated us to a mini-set of covers that closed with all six members of the two bands on stage together for an extended version of Dred Foole’s “So Tough” — a 1982 song that featured the three MOB members as “The Din”.

We recorded this set with the DPA 4021’s set up in the standard front right corner spot of the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent board feed. Acidjack also ran a Schoeps pair, but the synchronization of the six-channel source will take more post-production time. We will work in another version of this recording in the future, but for now this four-track version is still quite superb. Enjoy!

The Mission of Burma set was also recorded and will be featured in the coming days.

Braids: November 30, 2010 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Montreal’s Braids do not even have a record out yet – that happens on Kanine Records on January 18 of the new year – but the buzz around them has been building steadily, such that even The New York Times took notice. They make modern, layered dreampop that focuses on heavenly vocal harmonies and slow-burning melodies, and their live show is one that rewards patience. Their carefully crafted songs often begin with a whisper, a suggestion of what’s to come several minutes later. This performance, opening for the Radio Dept. (not taped due to no word back from management), evidenced that perfectly, with the set dominated by three longish numbers: the spine-tingling “Lemonade,” “Native Speaker,” and the closer, “Glass Deers,” that each gave a sense of the band’s unique approach. “Lemonade” could well be the band’s signature number, and will be the leadoff track on the forthcoming Native Speaker. Performing these songs live is no small feat, but Braids made it effortless, keeping the crowd mostly rapt throughout. Call it sacrilege, given the heavily-buzzing headliner, but their performance was by far the most special of the night.

I recorded this set from our usual location with the four microphone rig. The crowd is generally quiet and respectful, and the sonic clarity and presence is outstanding. Enjoy!

Jeff Tweedy: December 4, 2010 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Jeff Tweedy solo shows are a rare commodity in NYC. By Jeff’s account at Saturday night’s Bowery Ballroom show, he had not played solo in NYC since 2001, and never at Bowery. Despite that we have seen Wilco many times, the only other Jeff Tweedy solo performance we experienced was at the Mercury Lounge in 1997 (also recorded that night). That show thirteen years ago also happened to be the first time I ever heard “Via Chicago”, which would show up on Summerteeth two years later, and which would be reprised on Saturday night (streaming below). But those fans expecting that number and more of the Wilco catalog would learn quickly that this was not a Wilco concert — some of the louder and more obnoxious in the crowd never got that message. To the delight of the diehards, Tweedy worked through some fairly obscure back catalog, including “The Ruling Class”, “Country Disappeared” and “Chinese Apple” in consecutive slots mid-set. We were particularly happy that he delved briefly into the Uncle Tupelo catalog for “Wait Up”, which also reached back to that 1997 show. The opening set by John Stirratt and Pat Sansone’s band Autumn Defense offered the opportunity for a mini Wilco set, and in fact Tweedy’s bandmates joined for the first two encores.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig on a high stand from the back rail of the soundboard. This was a challenging recording situation given the quiet music and the crowd noise. The post production consisted of an arduous amount of isolated crowd level reductions, and editing of some of the unfortunate intoxicated rowdiness around me. Overall, the finished product is not superb, but is certainly a pleasurable listening experience. Enjoy!

Dinowalrus: November 16, 2010 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The Brooklyn band Dinowalrus has executed a bit of a reboot lately, changing both their personnel and their approach. The former Titus Andronicus guitarist Pete Feigenbaum, the band’s frontman and guitarist, has added a new player on bass, Liam Andrew, as well as Depreciation Guild drummer Anton Hoccheim, and has sought to clarify some of the ideas explored on the band’s debut LP, %. One of the band’s goals, as they put it, is to be “structurally unorthodox,” but at times that led to performances that lacked focus – it could seem that one song was a jumble of concepts rather than a unified whole. This show at the Knitting Factory showcased both reworked arrangements of their older material as well as new songs that continue the band’s love affair with Krautrock, acid rock, noise, thrash punk and psychedelia, but have much more musical consistency and pop sensibility. Listen to “RICO” below and see if you agree. The band’s new approach has already received positive notice in several publications, and we expect that trend to continue in 2011. We still have no idea what the hell a “Dinowalrus” is, but now we can say that this musical creature is a strange beast with a purpose.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones at the soundboard. They captured the excellent house mix by Rob of the Knitting Factory perfectly. Enjoy!
