The Black Keys: July 28, 2010 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Samples

I don’t know how these guys do it.  In little more than a 24-hour period, The Black Keys played three full gigs here in New York City.  One of them, the second of two dates at Central Park’s SummerStage, was right before this performance.  I got tired just watching them.  On top of that, they always aim to please and are consistently one of the best live acts that you will see.  Every time I’ve been to a Black Keys concert, I’ve invariably met (or brought) someone who’s never been to one of their shows and every time, when the lights come up, I see that “whoa!” look on their faces.  It thrills me to no end.

Aside from incorporating a heavy dose of songs from the recent ‘Brothers‘ album, the setlist didn’t vary wildly from their last stint at Terminal 5.  Not to say there weren’t any other changes: since May, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have been bringing Leon Michaels, on keyboards, and Nick Movshon, on bass, out to play “Same Old Thing” and the ‘Brothers‘ material.  Effectively, turning the stalwart duo into a four-piece for the first time in a live setting.  The purists might cry heresy, but it adds a great dimension to their sound.  And judging from the crowd’s reaction, I’m not the only one who thinks so.  I make no secret of my admiration for this band and they’ve certainly earned it.

Thanks to the help of our new pals, Ryan and Frank, we were able to secure the dead-center spot on the balcony directly behind the soundboard.  The recording is excellent and, apart from getting louder as the night progressed, about as good as it gets in this venue.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Although she has played several times recently in NYC, we had not previously cross paths with Merrill Garbus and Tune-Yards. I had heard tremendous accolades for her set opening for Dirty Projectors at Bowery, so it was with great anticipation that we witnessed her Monday night set for the grand opening of The Rock Shop. The reports that Tune-Yards elevates their music to another whole level for the live show have not been exaggerated. From the very first moments of this set, Merrill was in complete control. As she opened with the abundantly sampled voice tracks of the anthemic “Hatari”, the packed house swayed with every beat and responded to every call. While several songs were performed solo, for most of the set Merrill was accompanied by the outstanding bass of Nate Brenner, and for several special numbers she was also joined by a three-piece horn section. But the focus never left Merrill, as her stage persona is thoroughly compelling. Tune-Yards will soon record their follow-up to the well regarded debut record Bird-Brains, and several of those songs were on display on Monday night. Of the newer numbers, the call and response “Do You Want to Live?” retains Merrill’s uncannily natural adaptations of African rhythms, while the encore “Powa” (streaming below) is a more offbeat pop number with multi-influenced rhythmic changes.

This set was recorded under the same conditions as the Sharon Van Etten recording and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Sharon Van Etten: August 2, 2010 The Rock Shop – Flac and MP3 Download + Streaming Sample

The faithful readers of this site are well aware of our great affection for the music of Sharon Van Etten. We’ve recorded her live on many occasions and her shows have been featured on nyctaper eight times. All of those recordings feature the angelic voiced folksinger performing solo with her guitar. Last night at the brand new Rock Shop (more on this excellent venue later), Sharon Van Etten entered the next stage of her career as she played all new songs for the first time with a full band. The new album is entitled Epic and will be released in October, but is available in limited quantities at Sharon’s merch table at shows. Her lyrics remain achingly personal, if a tad more abstract, but its the voice that is still the centerpiece of Sharon’s music. Fortunately, her rhythm section played at a tasteful volume so that Sharon did not need to sing over the band. The band also features the excellent Cat Martino (who we last saw at Truck America Festival) who provided background vocals and effects that worked perfectly within the new band framework. Of the new songs, our favorites are “Save Yourself” (streaming below) and “One Day”. Sharon also featured a new musical wrinkle, as she performed “Love More” on organ for the first time in a live setting.

Sharon Van Etten plays again on Saturday August 7, at the Bushwick Star in Brooklyn, before departing on an East Coast tour with Marissa Nadler. Sharon will also begin recording a new album in October.

We recorded this set with the DPA microphone mounted in a stand in front of the soundboard twenty feet from the stage and mixed with a feed from the soundboard. The sound is excellent and is perhaps the best quality of any Sharon recording we have featured on this site. Enjoy!

It’s always a great thing when you show up early enough at a concert to catch the opening acts you’re not familiar with and they wind up impressing you.  Peter Wolf Crier is such a band.  I hadn’t heard of the Peter Pisano and Brian Moen indie/alt-rock duo before but I’ll be keeping track of them.  They remind me a bit of a Greg Markel-era Prime Movers or if Radiohead had started out as a two-piece and Thom Yorke wasn’t so maudlin, they might sound like this.  It doesn’t hurt that Pisano’s voice is a little like Jeff Buckley’s with a shot of testosterone.  Closing with their brilliant take on a Nick Drake song ended the set wonderfully and the folks in attendance that night were treated to another pleasant surprise when Peter joined the Heartless Bastards during their encore.  I’m looking forward to the next time these guys are in town.

We recorded this set from the same spot on the balcony as Heartless Bastards and it came out very good.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

No Age: July 25, 2010 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

No Age is on the verge of rising to the level of the punk royalty. After a productive five-year history where the Sub Pop duo have collaborated with everyone from Bob Mould to Dan Deacon, have produced two outstanding albums and a plethora of singles and EPs, and remained true to their DIY aesthetic, No Age is poised to release what may be their “Zen Arcade” — Everything In Between (due in September), an album of musical and emotional growth which expands their dark and aggressive sound to something beyond punk. Last Sunday at Brooklyn Bowl, five of the new album songs were on display mixed within the classic No Age material, and in some cases surpassed the older songs. The track streamed below (the song titles for the album are available but not apparent from listening) was one of the strongest numbers in the entire set. No Age has added a third member for the touring band (keyboard and effects) but still retain that manic energy that have propelled them thus far. We can’t wait for September.

This set was recorded in the same manner as the Cap’n Jazz set from the same show. This recording accurately reflects the sound in the venue that afternoon. Enjoy!

Built To Spill: July 28, 2010 Irving Plaza – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Although known for their epic sets, including the several we recorded last year, Built to Spill’s set at Irving Plaza(thankfully renamed back from its brief, lame, “Fillmore East’ incarnation) was relatively short (clocking in around 80 minutes) and tighter than we expected.  That said, the band tore it up for every second that they were onstage, and frontman Doug Martsch’s vocals were dialed-in from moment one.   Playing very little of their recent There is No Enemy (though the leadoff of “Oh Yeah” was perfect), the band decided to play through the catalog, including an excellent version of their early classic, “Car” with the crowd fully behind it.  The band also played a highlight from their Live album, the Halo Benders cover “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain.”  The fact that a band’s 80-minute show is considered “short” is a testament to how much they normally give their fans.  In the end, not every show – even one with a serious player like Martsch – needs to serve up non-stop jams to be a winner.

We recorded this set from the center of the floor with the Schoeps and Neumann hypercardiod microphones parallel to each other on an 8-foot mic stand.  With some EQ tweaks to reduce some of the room characteristics, the sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

The National: July 29, 2010 Terminal 5 – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

I’ll admit to some trepidation about The National‘s three-year break between albums. After 2005’s excellent Alligator, the band’s brilliant Boxer (2007) is perhaps the best album of the entire last decade. The National toured steadily throughout 2008, and played two of the best shows we saw that year, at BAM in February and Summerstage in August. A relatively quiet 2009 and news of the new album led to a significant amount of anticipation — could the band meet the expectations and reach the bar they had raised so high after Boxer. The day that High Violet was streamed on the New York Times website (!), I felt an almost palpable sense of relief as I listened to the album straight through. The National had produced another stunning achievement — an album with songcraft equal or better than the band’s best material but with more confidence and maturity. High Violet is the album that cements The National as one of those few bands that will provide consistent quality music for as long as they choose to make it. At Terminal 5 last night, the band’s live show complimented the triumph of the new album with a performance of sustained excellence. The newer material blended well with the classics and in some instances shown brighter — “Lemonworld” reached a crowd-pleasing crescendo, “Bloodbuzz Ohio” was a show-stopper, and “Terrible Love” was a powerful show-closer.

We recorded this set with the Neumanns and the Schoeps in a four-mic configuration from a 12 foot stand in front of the soundboard cage. The sound in the cavernous venue was not quite up to our expectations, and while the recording has a lot of character, it lacks the clarity we expect. With those caveats, enjoy!

Cap’n Jazz: July 25, 2010 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

A day that would end with an excellent set at Maxwell’s did not start out so well for Cap’n Jazz and their fans. We arrived for the JellyNYC Pool Party at Williamsburg Waterfront while the dark clouds were closing in, and a few short minutes later the skies opened up. The move of the rained-out show to Brooklyn Bowl has been well documented and discussed elsewhere, but suffice to say that despite the anecdotal instances of misfortune, the move of this show to the spacious and close-by Bowl saved the day. By the time we arrived at the venue, the house sound crew had nearly completed setting up for the bands. After an incendiary set from No Age (also recorded, coming soon), Cap’n Jazz ripped through fifty minutes of their original material in front of an absolutely insane crowd — the front half of the Bowl’s floor was a total anarchy of bodies and objects. Perhaps due to the nature of the crowd or the craziness of the day, this set is not as tight as the Maxwell’s show, but shares the same energy and enthusiasm from the bands — an excellent bookend to an unforgettable day.

This set was recorded with the Neumann’s mounted at the soundboard area and mixed with a feed from the board. Fortunately, the bowling lanes were empty during this set and the volume of the music drowned out any ambient noise from the venue. The result is another superb capture. Enjoy!

Flaming Lips: July 26, 2010 Central Park Summerstage – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

Its hard to believe that its been almost four years since The Flaming Lips have performed within the borders of NYC. That September 2006 concert at Hammerstein Ballroom had Deerhoof as the opening band, and featured much of the then-new At War with the Mystics album. While Monday night’s show at Summerstage featured a new band member and new material from 2009’s Embryonic, many of the same stage props and antics remain from years past. But the band’s willingness to dedicate themselves to providing an incredible night of entertainment night in and night out is what continues to make this band’s live show perhaps the most enjoyable of all similar bands touring today. And while Wayne does tend to speechify, its abundantly clear that the man’s heart is in the right place. The band’s setlist is the same as the other shows on this tour, but the wonderful night weather gave an added celebratory air to this show that made it special.

I recorded this set with my best mobile unit from literally within the first fifteen feet of the crowd — great for atmosphere, but not so good for avoiding much crowd participation. I was so close as to literally be underneath Wayne’s bubble during “Fear”. The listener should understand that this recording was captured from a prime experience location at this show. With that caveat, enjoy!

Medications: July 23, 2010 Littlefield – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Our friend Jonny Leather has been putting on well-rounded and uniformly excellent showcase shows for awhile now, and we were pleased to have the chance to cover another of them last Friday night at Littlefield. As Jonny’s shows often do, this show spotlighted some bands from outside New York; in this case, the headliners Medications and Deleted Scenes are our Amtrak neighbors from Washington, D.C. Medications may not be a household name up here (yet), but they have an impeccable Dischord pedigree. The band is the brainchild of Devin Ocampo and Chad Molter, who also founded the influential math rock outfit Faraquet. Prior to that, Devin did time in one of my all-time favorite D.C. bands, the short-lived but phenomenal Smart Went Crazy. Medications are a more accessible band than either of its predecessors, retaining the intricate, instantly recognizable guitar work that Faraquet was known for, but with more melodic vocals and traditionally structured songs that reflect the members’ love of not only 70s punk and their contemporaries in the Dischord scene, but also their love of 60s pop. Despite the fact that all hell was breaking loose outside weather-wise, the weather couldn’t keep fans away from this show, which found the band playing through almost all of their recently released CompletelyRemoved, which is one of the strongest new records I have heard this year. Ocampo and Molter (as well as Mark Cisneros, who joined the band for this record) gave the crowd ample evidence of their chops at this show, playing the hell out of their instruments even after the PA feed was shut down due to the venue’s noise restrictions!

I recorded this set with a combination of a stereo soundboard feed provided by the Littlefield staff and the Schoeps microphones. The sound quality is excellent, though I do note that there were some fluctuations in the volume of the soundboard feed as the sound team had to reduce the volume due to the aforementioned noise restrictions. These adjustments should be mostly inaudible to the listener. All tracks are tagged for easy importing into iTunes or your favorite MP3 system. Enjoy!
