Spiral Stairs: June 23, 2017 The Bell House

It’s been nearly a decade since we’ve had new music from Scott Kannberg/Spiral Stairs—but the long wait is justified as his new album Doris and the Daggers is his best since Preston School of Industry disbanded in 2004. We caught up with Spiral Stairs for the first of his two night NYC stand and were rewarded with eighty minutes of tunes off the new record, plus some Pavement and Preston School of Industry favorites. If you needed reminding of Spiral’s crucial contributions to the former, the song selection here—“Date with IKEA,” “Kennel District,” “Passat Dream,” “Hit the Plane Down,” and “Two States”—will emphasize that Pavement had two major songwriters. For my money, I enjoyed hearing a couple from the criminally underrated Preston School of Industry, the wonderfully-lackadaisical “Whalebones” (which ranks up there with his signature Pavement compositions) and “Caught in the Rain.” (As an aside, there are quite a few PSOI tracks I’d still like to hear the Spiral Stairs band play live, like “Somethings Happen Always” and “Falling Away.”) But back to Doris and the Daggers: so many reviews have focused on the maturity of the record, which makes it sound overly serious. Spiral Stairs may be older and singing about real life, but he’s still doing so with a wink and smile and his penchant for an opaque but resonant turn of phrase.

I recorded this with the mics set up at the board in DIN stereo configuration, which I then combined with a board feed from the Bell House’s FOH David Hurtgen. A special thanks goes out to David for loaning me a mic stand so I could make this recording for you all. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Its not news to our readers that Kid Millions is one of this site’s favorite musicians, both as a member of site-regulars Oneida and as a solo artist under the moniker of Man Forever. We’ve chronicled Man Forever from their days as a team of drummers, through the addition of accompanying musicians, to its present incarnation. For the latest album, Kid compiled a roster of prime musicians and created a work of great imagination and invention that truly transports Man Forever to it ultimate fruition. Play What They Want (Thrill Jockey) is more than just a collection of Kid’s friends — Laurie Anderson, Yo La Tengo, and Mary Lattimore included — its a realization of a career of the scene’s ultimate percussionist as composer. The album is a musician at the peak of his compositional talents.

For the album’s release show at the most-appropriate setting of the Brooklyn Music School, Kid Millions brought together many of the album’s players (but none of the celebrities) as a profoundly talented orchestra. Among the many players too numerous to list in its entirety, there was the percussion group TIGUE, the harp of Brandee Younger, the vocals of Nina Dante and Nick Hallett, and the lively lead bass of Brandon Lopez. Kid introduces everyone on the recording and rest assured that this compilation of talent is truly remarkable. The band worked through three of the tracks from Play What They Want and one older piece in a well-paced set of material that touched on elements of jazz, prog and drone and highlighted the natural rhythmic talents of its protagonist.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in front of the stage and mixed with a superb soundboard feed provided by the talents of house FOH Ben Manley. The result is an outstanding capture with depth and clarity. Enjoy!

Dirty Dishes: June 6, 2017 Alphaville

Since hosting them at our CMJ show a few years back, Dirty Dishes have continued to grow steadily, as Jenny Tuite and her bandmates continue to develop a reputation around their adopted home in New York (via Boston and then California). Following on their 2015 full length, Guilty, the band have released a trickle of new material since. “All of Me,” from last year, kicked off this show at Alphaville, and its heavy, dirge-like sound was an instant favorite. The band wears their early-mid-90s influences proudly, and what they share with those bands is a keen sense of the dynamics at work in that music, and the sense of controlled abandon that made that style compelling in the first place. If this wasn’t the longest show on record, it was more than enough to remind us what we liked so much about this band in the first place, and to leave us hoping for more from them in 2017.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V in a mobile rig right in the middle of the room. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Robert Millis: May 17, 2017 Park Church Co-op

It’s no secret that Sublime Frequencies publishes some of the most interesting, far-flung music and books out there, much of that due to the extraordinarily tireless work of compiler and artist Robert Millis. His latest book is Indian Talking Machine, which chronicles Millis’ hunt for 78s in India in words and pictures. Millis is also responsible for an impressive catalog of music of his own, both solo and with Climax Golden Twins. Most recently, Abduction put out the album The Lonesome High, which includes “Marvelous Fool” and the traditional “The Drowsy Sleeper,” both of which he performed last month at Park Church Co-op. (As an aside, that album also includes “Notes on a Scandal” which he performed a couple years ago at Union Pool.) Also in this set is “Continental,” a Climax Golden Twins song from 2007’s 5 Cents a Piece. The finale, “Abstraction,” is a long ambient piece that perfectly encapsulates the intersection of Millis’ two passions, combining his guitar with, in his words, “a mixture of field recordings I have made, 78rpm record samples, and a few other oddities—put together to interact with my effects and the guitar pick up in interesting ways.”

I recorded this with the room mics set up ORTF at the stage lip, combined with a board feed from Park Church engineer Jasno Swarez. It sounds excellent. Enjoy!

Ween @ Brooklyn Steel on June 6, 2017 – A Team Dirty South/NYCTaper Joint

After some mild subway misdirection, an uber dropped me off at Brooklyn Steel exactly at 7:00. I was surprised to find a long line well around the corner. In Charleston, music fans show up an hour late for everything. This was my first indication that this Brooklyn Ween crowd was hungry and eagerly anticipating this two-night run following the band’s reuniting just last year. Conversation around me in line was entirely Ween focused: a spirited Brooklyn Bowl-Las Vegas February run discussion, Sunday’s Baltimore setlist review and expectations for the evening. Clearly, this crowd was excited and ready for a rock show.

The line moved quickly and in about 10 minutes I was getting patted down at the entrance. My recording gear seemed to be understood; however the microphone stand was a source of confusion. Luckily, the NYCTaper crew had rolled out the red carpet and I knew exactly who to ask for. Another taper and I waited patiently until Anthony, the venue manager came over. Anthony had seen the likes of us before; and quickly instructed us on how Brooklyn Steel wants it done. No worries, Anthony was very accommodating and friendly, and instantly we were inside hoisting mics and pressing buttons.

Wow. This crowd was ravenous. Fans started screaming around 8:00 and didn’t stop. The place erupted when Ween took the stage around 8:30. Meandering slowly into “The Stallion”, then launching into “You Fucked Up”; this crowd knew the gloves were off and we were all in for a serious “all ages” Ween show! The set was richly scattered with Ween favorites (or classics if you can say that about the Ween catalog): “Transdermal”, “Push the Daisies”, “Roses are Free”, things were moving on and the Ween crowd was fully engaged. I heard very little crowd chatter and the recording reflects it. The band continued on through a twisty “HIV Song” and a rocking “Spinal Meningitis”. About halfway through the set, Gene pulled out the acoustic and announced “this is the first time we’ve ever played this”, and tuned into the opening chords of “Among His Tribe” off the 2003 Quebec album. What a surprise! As if not to take themselves or the moment too seriously, Ween followed quickly with “Piss Up a Rope”. The room would erupt again when the band announced a “nice party jam” and led us through David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”; a cover recently performed in Baltimore after a 6 year absence since New Years 2011. Immediately following, we were treated to the first live version of “Seconds” since summer 2002. The band lit the room up again with a super-funky “Going Gets Tough”, then winded things down with “Someday”. After a nearly 5-minute encore break; Ween gave us a Gene-less “Fiesta”, with Gene returning to the stage to shut things down with “The Mollusk”. The band left the stage at 10:42, following a few mentions of “tomorrow night”. Ween certainly left this crowd engaged and primed for another show!

I was a quick Uber back to Manhattan by 11:15, with a Shake Shack burger and a bottle of cabernet delivered to my hotel room, only in NYC for this Team Dirty South taper!

Ween: June 7, 2017 Brooklyn Steel

For the second night of Ween‘s run at shiny new venue Brooklyn Steel, the band continued to reiterate what has made them such a cult favorite. As a newcomer to the band, I can’t claim to be any kind of expert in the ins and outs of the setlists, but if you’re curious what has made them one of the more welcome “reunions” of recent years, I can offer some thoughts. First, the musical diversity of the band’s sound has long been well-known, mixing bar-room rock, punk, psychedelia, country, new wave, funk and more. Though the recent accumulation of Phish fans to their ranks has been talked about, the more logical touch points for understanding this band are willfully-weird bands like the Butthole Surfers and the Meat Puppets, who similarly can’t be pigeonholed into a genre so much as a vibe. Second, in Ween’s case, there’s a brand of outrageous humor at work in many of their songs, of a kind that prompts debate on the Internet over the funniest Ween songs. Whether or not songs like “Deez Nutz” or “Bananas and Blow” are your thing doesn’t necessarily determine whether you have to like or dislike the live show, just as some Phish get more turned on by the Gamehendge element than others. Personally, I was more fired up about songs like the sprawling 1994 jam “A Tear for Eddie,” or 1990’s Butthole Surfers-esque “Licking the Palm for Guava” (also dedicated here to Gibby Haynes).

Since I know fairly little about the band, I decided to consult a long time fan on the show to get his take. In his read, compared to the previous Brooklyn Steel show, this was a relatively sedate affair, focusing more on the band’s country sound and skipping some of what this fan deemed “essential” Ween songs such as a classic cover, or any of “Dr. Rock,” “Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down),” “Push the Little Daisies,” “You Fucked Up,” “Golden Eel,” and “Buckinham Green” — all of which made it into the first night setlist.  Along with the “A Tear For Eddie” that I did, he pointed out that “Mushroom Festival In Hell” and “I’ll Be Your Johnny On the Spot” as highlights.

Wherever you are in your Ween fandom, you can’t deny that they’re as hard working a band as they come. When they promised “an evening” with them, we got one, a full two hours and ten minutes of mostly uninterrupted playing that fired up the slam-packed Brooklyn Steel floor. I have no doubt that the show was ten times more engaging for those better acquainted with the inside jokes and the general band lore, but based on this performance, I’d be up for finding out more.

Finally, if you haven’t been to Brooklyn Steel yet, know that longtime sufferers of its predecessor will finally have a mid-large venue for more popular bands that offers a full view of the stage from almost every place in the room. We’ve already enjoyed a few shows here so far, and look forward to many more. As always thanks to the professional staff of Bowery Presents for making our presence there feel both safe and welcome.

Horse Lords: June 4, 2017 Sunnyvale

Last Summer during a heat wave we hosted a show headlined by Horse Lords at Trans-Pecos and it was a glorious night of cool air and even cooler music. EricPH “found” this band for the site in 2015, but by 2016 their Northern Spy album Interventions put them on the map for all of us. Horse Lords is comprised of four superb musicians with not only music-school skills but the touch and timing to play incredibly intricate music in complete sync with each other. They combine the best parts of prog, jazz and math rock into extended suites in the live setting that inspires repeated listens.

On Sunday night at Sunnyvale, Horse Lords brought out the diehards and there are now quite a few of these enlightened folks. The crowd wasn’t overwhelming, but those who were there were all-in — the band’s peaks and valley and twists and turns had the entire crowd hanging on for dear life. The set was culled primarily from Interventions but also included one extended older cut to finish the set. From my vantage point at the front of the stage, it was a quite an impressive image of four musicians instinctively in tune with each other. Horse Lords are a band not to be missed, and we will continue to follow this outstanding group.

Horse Lords are currently on a short midwest tour which visits Toronto, Cleveland and Chicago beginning tonight through Friday. All dates and venues here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted at the front of the stage and mixed with an excellent board feed. The mix of the two sources compliments perfectly and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band: April 6, 2017 Trans-Pecos

Chris Forsyth’s appearance at Trans-Pecos a couple months ago heralded that most important of musical happenings: the possibility of a new release. With their latest No Quarter release The Rarity of Experience a proven success win fans, Forsyth and the Solar Motel Band used this intimate stage to show off some of their latest attractions. After hitting the ground running with “High Castle Rock,” we heard three new numbers in a row, including “History and Science Fiction” and “Mistaken the Bottle” (which we first heard at Union Pool back in late 2016) plus a new as-yet-unnamed (to us, anyway) number. When you add in “Dreaming In the Non-Dream I-II,” you’ve got a set chock-full of new material that continues to expand on Forsyth’s unique guitar vision, which blends a rock fan’s appreciation for shredding (he named a song after “Cocksucker Blues,” after all) with a Deadhead’s appreciation for sonic exploration, thematic variation, and little details. It’s always a treat to see Chris and the band, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted on what’s next.

I recorded this set with onstage Schoeps MK5 microphones into a warm-sounding Aerco preamp, plus a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Eugene Chadbourne & Sunwatchers: April 25, 2017 Union Pool

Back in April, psych-freejazz outfit Sunwatchers did a three-week residency at Union Pool, each week performing with some local and not-so-local friends. To cap off the residency they brought out Eugene Chadbourne for an opening set (that recording here) plus a very special collaboration between Chadbourne and the ‘Watchers. It doesn’t get much better than these guys performing some Minutemen, Sonny Rollins, and Chuck Berry tunes together—but then somehow it does when they break free of Earth’s gravity on John Lee Hooker’s “Boogie Chillen.” Apparently there’s going to be an album featuring Sunwatchers backing Doc Chad (Chadwatchers, anyone?) and if that manages to be half as good as this set, it’ll be something for sure.

I recorded this from our usual location at Union Pool with a board feed courtesy of our bud Doug. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Animal Collective: May 23, 2017 Brooklyn Steel

Last year, I wrote about this site’s history with Animal Collective and celebrated the serious rejuvenation of the band’s fortunes. That show at Irving Plaza was our first introduction to the live performances of the Painting With material. We also caught the show later in the year at Terminal 5. In the ensuing months, Animal Collective released two EPs with material related to the album and continued to tour. This Spring saw their return to NYC for a show at the new Bowery Presents venue Brooklyn Steel and last Tuesday’s show was perhaps the most powerful Animal Collective performance we’ve experienced in more than a decade of seeing the band.

This was our first experience at Brooklyn Steel and I was impressed. There’s definitely a nice vibe to the venue, and the sound quality from our vantage point was on point — full spectrum rich sound with no boominess at all. The intensity of the acoustics in the venue served the band well, as Animal Collective provided thundering bass beats to accompany the multi-layered three-pronged sound delivery system. This tour’s version of the band features Panda, Geologist and Avey across the front accompanied by drummer Jeremy Hyman at center rear of the stage. The set featured much of the recent material but also satisfied long-time fans with older tracks democratically selected from their many releases and some deep cuts not heard in years. The sold-out crowd called the band back after a healthy 75 minute main set and we were treated to an extended encore set that closed the night with a lengthy and rousing version of “Summertime Clothes”.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypercards mounted at the elevated area inside of the soundboard area and with the mics raised high. The amazing sound in the venue and the choice of microphones worked perfectly as this recording is really quite superb. Enjoy!
