King Buzzo: July 14, 2014 The Wick – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Songs

For over 30 years, Buzz “King Buzzo” Osborne and the Melvins have made their own brand of heavy rock, ‘sludge’, an institution.  While that has had a huge influence on music, including helping birth the kinder, gentler ‘grunge’ genre, Melvins continue to stand apart from the crowd with a sound that is instantly recognizable.  When Buzzo decided to record and release his first acoustic album this year, the excellent ‘This Machine Kills Artists‘, it was definitely a departure from what he’s known for, but not completely unexpected from a performer who has been blazing his own trail for decades.  With Melvins being a favorite of ours and having appeared on this site several times, we were excited to hear that he was embarking on a solo tour in support of the new disc and relished the opportunity to catch his stop at The Wick, a new venue in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn.  Onstage with little more than an acoustic guitar, a microphone and his trademark hair, King Buzzo kicked his set off with the dramatic “Boris” and proceeded to keep the respectful Brooklyn crowd (aside from one overly enthusiastic attendee) in rapt attention for the next 75 minutes.  Peppered with anecdotes, observations and a hilarious story about Mike Patton, Buzz proved to be quite the raconteur.  His great combination of new songs, Melvins staples from their vast catalog and engaging, interactive banter made for a show that I could easily enjoy almost every night.

We recorded King Buzzo in the same manner as Mary Halvorson’s opening set with a stereo pair of Countryman B3 omni microphones placed onstage. While there is some ambient noise at times, the overall quality and clarity is excellent thanks to Buzzo’s sound engineer, Dave, and The Wick’s FOH, Joe. Enjoy!

Oneida: July 17, 2014 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

With Oneida, you never have to worry about seeing the same show twice. Even if you’re hearing the same song — for example, the mammoth version of “Cedars” from this night’s show at Glasslands compared to the one we documented at the start of the year at the Knitting Factory — you won’t necessarily know it if you don’t pay close attention. As our review of the Knitting Factory show pointed out, at this point, referring to an Oneida show’s “setlist” is kind of missing the point. This band has long-since abandoned the conventional, which is why they continue to be a major draw in the underground scene in New York seventeen years in despite minimal blog hype and virtually no mainstream exposure. An Oneida show is an event, a celebration of what music can be when all of the downward pressures on creativity are cut.

Joining the band for this show, as he did at Glasslands last year, was James McNew of Yo La Tengo and Dump, whose bass playing mingled nicely with the swirling controlled chaos on the stage. Although technically a four-song “set”, this set had a similar structure, with a 40-minute sequence of “Cedars” into “Economy Travel” adding two shorter songs, “Cock Fight” and “You Get Brighter” (a 48-minute version of which appeared at the 2013 Glasslands show) to round it out. We expect to see some of these compositions whittled down to album length for a future release, but in a way that’d be a shame. This act’s sound cannot be contained on a few pieces of plastic, nor can their songs properly be culled to one right “version”. The beauty is in the expression of it at a given time on a given night–the very reason live recordings exist in the first place.

I recorded this set with a Schoeps MK5 and Schoeps MK8 capsule in the “mid-side” configuration on-stage to allow maximum adjustment capability to the stereo image, combined with a soundboard feed from Glasslands head of production Josh Thiel. The sound quality is quite simply phenomenal — one of the best recordings I think I can take credit for. Enjoy!

Woods: April 22, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

Before sharing their latest sounds at yet another blockbuster of a show at the Bowery Ballroom in May, which we recorded, Woods kicked off their tour with a more intimate show at the Williamsburg clubhouse Baby’s All Right, curated by our friends at BrooklynVegan. Meant to also celebrate the release of their latest album, With Light and With Love. If band founder, lead singer and guitarist Jeremy Earl had any concerns that this first outing with the new stuff might come off ragged but right, he needn’t have had them — at least about the “ragged” part. This show displayed the band’s now-familiar virtuosity and served as a preview of what was to come later in the tour. This night, as at Bowery, the band pulled off a tight segue of “Shining” into the classic jam song “Bend Beyond” that exited into “Size Meets The Sound”, proving that the more approachable sound of With Light and With Love felt right at home with the band’s earlier material. It is always a treat to catch a Woods show, but especially so in a club of this size; this is a band that fills and belongs in bigger venues, but hasn’t forgotten where they came from.

This set was recorded on the Baby’s All Right house multitrack and, as usual, the sound quality is outstanding. The full set is streaming below as well as FLAC and MP3 downloads as usual. Enjoy!

Mary Halvorson: July 14, 2014 The Wick – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Mary Halvorson is a multi-talented, multifaceted musician who represents the best of the New York scene, which is to say that she seems to be everywhere all at once. A survey of her recent shows includes everything from more sedate jazz gigs at Cornelia Street Cafe, appearances with Tim Berne at the avant-jazz club Roulette, a show in the band People at Death By Audio, and of course, her current performances as opening act for Buzz Osborne aka King Buzzo of the Melvins, currently promoting his new solo album (that recording soon). As the New Yorker put it more succinctly, “she’s in tons of bands”.

While we have tried to feature many of the best-known current virtuoso guitarists on this site, this is a first appearance for Halvorson, a slight embarrassment to us given both her talent and how prolific she is. As this set at Bushwick’s The Wick demonstrated, she is a singular improviser who in a single set can cut across generations and genres. For this set, Halvorson chose to go the all-covers route, including songs by Ornette Coleman, Oliver Nelson, the bassist Chris Lightcap, and a host of other U.S. and international leading lights of jazz and guitar music. To their credit, Buzzo’s metal-minded audience understood what was going on, giving Halvorson her due. She deserves all that and more.

I recorded this set with a simplistic onstage rig of two small Countryman omnidirectional microphones split two and a half feet apart. While there is some ambient noise evident at points, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Phish: July 12, 2014 Randall’s Island – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Phish represents a lot of things that people don’t understand. Tell those who listen to almost all of the other bands I listen to that you’re going to a Phish show, and expect rolled eyes and chuckles. At one time, Phish meant to its fans the continuation of the promise of The Grateful Dead and the beautiful movement they created; that gave way, in short order, to Phish being a juggernaut in its own right. If anything, the band’s very stylistic and and generational dissimilarity to the Dead is a key source of lament for its detractors. For others, so is the fact that they play really long songs, some of which have wincingly twee lyrical concepts. These things, I’ll concede.

Some people will never be convinced, but if you’re in the mood to be, you could do worse than starting with this excellent Village Voice blog post. Maybe a Phish show is a “you have to be there” kind of thing, but I’d like not to think so. Their career was, after all, built in part by people sharing live tapes. If you listen to this recording, in particular the emotional rollercoaster of a kickoff to the second set from “Punch You In the Eye” into “Carini”, followed by an especially cosmic rendition of “Ghost”, you might get an inkling of what this is all about when its firing on all cylinders. What’s on offer is neither party music nor music school pyrotechnics nor straight ahead rock n’ roll, but some combination of all three, a high wire act of a journey for its audience that only masters of their craft could create. One can’t ignore, too, the skills of Phish’s crew, especially veteran light man Chris Kuroda, who makes Phish’s shows as visually stunning as anything in the music business, and the entire FOH sound crew, who accomplished the difficult feat of making a windy, open-field outdoor venue sound flawless.

I haven’t attended a huge number of shows myself (this was the first I taped since 1999, though I’ve attended others since then), so, as was commented on our post of last night’s show, I won’t allow myself standing to say whether this was a “great” Phish show. But it was a reminder of the many things this band has done so right. Haters might ask themselves what they have against a band who created a community this large and this durable organically, turning their hard work into something commercially successful and culturally relevant, even if not to the mainstream. “Phish 3.0” at this point has a little something for everybody, community-wise, continuing to grow its fan base from the grizzled vets to the kids in their early 20s getting into their groove for the first time. For us tapers, seeing the band at this point is part ritual, part nostalgia trip. Most people are aware that they sell very good soundboard recordings on their site, meaning what we’re doing doesn’t have the same relevance, maybe, that it did before. But the mere act of recording the band is, for us, our connection to the community and to a band that for many of us was the one that brought us into the hobby to begin with. We share the recordings not only because they represent our own personal takes on the show, but out of tradition, community, and the original spirit that made this band what it is today.

I recorded this set from the same position nyctaper used for last night’s recording, forward of the board and dead center. Tonight’s recording was made with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and the warm Aerco custom preamp. The crowd was generally respectful around us, meaning the only occasional flaws are gusts of wind that were stronger than those experienced last night. Enjoy!

Phish: July 11, 2014 Randall’s Island – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I’ll be the first to admit that my street cred when it comes to Phish is pretty light. After all, its been almost fifteen years since I’ve actually even seen the band live. That night in the Fall of 1999 at Nassau Coliseum was a fairly famous Phish event, when lyricist Tom Marshall took the stage to sing a few covers with the band. I was also at a Madison Square Garden show during New Year’s week in 1998 when the band played a mini acoustic set in the middle of the show. But 90s memories aside, I do still have some very good friends with close connections to the band — close enough to give us the first-report exclusive of the Phish reunion way back in August of 2008, for which we took a lot of flak but which ultimately proved to be correct. So when it was announced that Phish would play three local GA shows at Randall’s Island I figured it was about time I got out and saw them again and brought to the site a recording that many of our readers have asked about over the years.

The trek to Randall’s started out a little rocky — a long line and long-ish wait for the Ferry. But once on the boat the day went about as smooth as could be expected. At the GA shows, there is no “tapers’ section” to speak of, so when I arrived as the second taper to reach the spot we pretty much set up where we landed — about 30 feet in front of the board and pretty close to the ideal spot. Phish fans take a lot of criticism but in reality people were extremely nice to us and also respectful of the rigs. We weren’t able to raise the mic pole as high as I would have liked because we were instructed not to block the band’s cameras, but even with a “low” pole, there is surprisingly little chatter on this recording.

My knowledge of Phish is not sufficient for me to say whether this was a “great” show but I’m pretty sure it was a very good one. Perhaps motivated by the release of their new album Fuego, by all accounts of the current tour the band is playing very well right now. And while Friday’s show did feature songs from the new album (we are streaming the excellent performance of “Fuego”), the show itself didn’t dwell on the new material with only three played. Overall the band played a nice selection of songs highlighted by first set standouts “Bathtub Gin” (also streaming) and “Stash”, and second set stalwarts “Down With Disease” and “David Bowie” and a rare-ish cover of local band TV on the Radio (“Golden Age”). I can’t say this show will make me drop everything and follow Phish on tour, but I certainly won’t wait another 15 years to see them again.

I recorded this show with the large diaphragm Neumann mics from the front of board spot referenced above. These mics perform well outdoors and this show was no exception. There are two bumps from balloons, but with the excellent location, good crowd and no weather-related issues, this recording came out superbly. Enjoy!

Night Beats: July 2, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Seattle garage rockers Night Beats helmed a stacked bill this night at Baby’s All Right that also featured Frankie Rose’s new project Beverly (that recording to be posted soon pending band approval), Hamish Kilgour’s latest project Roya, and Brooklyn garage punks LODRO. Night Beats had been teasing new songs for a while (including our last meet up with them at Glasslands) and we’ve finally gotten to see the final versions in the form of the songs on their record Sonic Bloom. Much of that material was on display on this night, but the Beats jumped around some, playing some more new ones, plus songs from their self-titled debut LP. Of note from that album in particular were a fiery “Puppet On A String” and the jammed-out set closer “The Other Side”, but the real fun came in hearing new songs like “Dewayne’s Drone” and “Useless Game” come to life. The Beats were joined after the show by the Black Lips on the turntables, and returned the favor the following night when they opened for the Lips at the lame corporate marketing opportunity House of Vans.

This set was recorded by Baby’s All Right head of production Devin Foley using the house multitrack system, whose files I produced and mixed down. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

NYCTaper’s love affair with Sharon Van Etten has been long, going back all the way to a Piano’s performance back in summer of 2008. In the intervening six years, Van Etten has transformed from the prodigious but slightly awkward performer we saw then into a commercial success and confident headliner of large venues, culminating as of late with NYC shows headlining Bowery Ballroom (our recording here) and Music Hall of Williamsburg. This pristine soundboard recording from the Mercury Lounge in 2010, which we unearthed recently, finds Van Etten charging ahead with the release of her breakthrough album, Epic, which would set the stage for the career-defining Tramp and everything that has come since. Sharon had only recently begun playing with a full band (the first such show which we captured), and this show reflects the transition, with a mix of full-band and solo material. We have already shared the Epic release show from the night before at Rock Shop; now you can check out Van Etten’s follow-up to that from Mercury, where Kyp Malone opened and Cat Martino once again gave the assist on vocals for half the set. This show provides an interesting midpoint between Sharon’s early innocence and future poise; the performance is resolute even if her crowd banter reveals how young she still is as an artist. While the longer Rock Shop recording, which adds audience microphones to the soundboard mix, is arguably the one to have of the two, one can never have enough Sharon. Thee Oh Sees: June 14, 2014 McCarren Park (Northside Fest) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Here at NYCTaper we’ve been big fans of the Northside Festival, and L Magazine and indeed the Stedmans for quite a while. And we hope the feelings are mutual — we’ve hosted multiple Northside showcases over the years and have been the subject of several L Magazine profiles too. But the show that seems to have been the pinnacle for the Fest has also been one of our favorites and that’s the Saturday afternoon mega-show at McCarren Park. In previous years we captured the uber Guided By Voices event in 2011. But this year it was a whole other level — one of the best live bands in the world playing in the bright sunshine in front of a few thousand adoring fans. Thee Oh Sees return to NYC after a brief “hiatus” was met with quite a bit of enthusiasm — by the time the band began their set much of the huge McCarren yard was filled. Indeed, John Dwyer joked that the next night’s show at Death By Audio would have a capacity one-fourteenth the size of this day’s crowd. After an introduction by Daniel Stedman, the band ripped through more than an hour of their intense garage-rock before the show’s curfew called an end to the set. We’ve previously discussed Dwyer’s move of the band to a trio but on the big stage in a huge venue, the three oh sees had no problem filling up the sound. As John announced, they’ll return to NYC in November and we’ll certainly be there again.

I recorded this set with the Neumann wide cards set up in front of the soundboard tent about 80 feet from the stage and mixed with a fine stereo board feed. The problem on this day was the wind. It was blowing and bursting right into the face of the stage, so that there is phasing that’s present in the board feed through the mics on stage and also in the sound projected by the speakers. There is no wind noise problem in the mics because of was in front of the tent, and protected by both the mic grills and big windscreens. Other than the wind-phasing, this is an excellent recording. Train Company: June 20, 2014 Bowery Electric – Flac/MP3/Streaming

If Chicago is the home of the blues, then perhaps its appropriate that one of the City’s best new-ish indie bands plays pretty killer blues. Train Company is more than just a blues band though — they’re a quintet of extremely talented musicians with a plethora of influences that adds up to a superb roots rock band. Train Company’s tour took them East and we were there when they played their first ever NYC show last week at Bowery Electric. The initial impression is that these guys are pros — belied by the fact that they’re mostly young men in their 20s. But between lead singer John Zozzaro’s wise growling vocals, the addition of a sax in several numbers, and killer organ/piano/keytar from Samuel Wyatt, Train Company has an authentic and compelling bluesy sound that really can’t miss. We’re streaming “Steve”, a number that captures all of these traits in one strong song.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards set up in front of the board about twenty feet from the stage and mixed with an excellent feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
