Speedy Ortiz: November 2, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Every review of Speedy Ortiz you read is going to acknowledge their debt to beloved nineties indie rock bands. I’ll resist enumerating them all here if only to focus attention on the band’s irresistible songs and serious chops. Begun as the bedroom project of singer-songwriter-guitarist Sadie Dupuis, she recruited Mike Falcone on drums, Darl Ferm on bass, and Devin McKnight on guitar for 2012’s “Taylor Swift” single. Two EP’s and one Pitchfork Best New Music LP later, Speedy Ortiz have a well-stocked arsenal of rockers to draw from. The band manages to keep it loose while cohering as a whole that sounds like they’ve been playing together for much longer than the math would indicate. Dupuis’ vocals somehow hover above and intersect with the music, alternating between complementing and contrasting it. These songs are infectious. Her confessional lyrics evoke a nostalgia for shared experience, even if it’s an experience you’d rather forget. At least, that’s how I feel when I hear “Indoor Soccer.”

We were lucky enough to catch Speedy Ortiz at Mercury Lounge on their dual-headlining tour with Ex Hex. To illustrate how successful this band has been in such a short period of time, Ex Hex frontwoman Mary Timony happens to be the former frontwoman of one of those beloved nineties indie rock bands to which Speedy Ortiz are often compared. Speedy Ortiz can hold their own among giants. Their Mercury Lounge set features an array of selections from across their catalog; from the Major Arcana LP, Sports and Real Hair EPs, and even some deep cuts like “Doomsday” from a Less Artists More Condos 7” and “Bigger Party” from the 2014 Adult Swim Singles Series. Catching this band in a small venue is a major coup as they’re clearly going to be packing larger rooms very soon.

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue, with a soundboard feed from Speedy Ortiz soundman, Dan. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: October 13 and 26, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Australia’s neo-psych phenoms King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard were here in New York during the Summer and made a bit of a splash. We saw them open for Thee Oh Sees at McCarren Park and could definitely see their talents, but conditions (crazy wind, early set time) didn’t allow us to see the band’s full potential. Baby’s All Right gave King Gizzard a multi-show residency back in June, so when the band returned to NYC for much of October it was perhaps fitting that we should capture them at their homebase away from home. Baby’s offers Gizz what they need to thrive — the right sized room, an adoring audience and a welcoming vibe. And thrive they did. The band played multiple shows at Baby’s including several CMJ shows. We were fortunate to capture the first of those October shows, and the last. On October 13, The King Gizzard set was truly what I had hoped to see when I saw the band’s potential back in June. This was a full-on psych-rock assault with dual-lead guitars, dual-drummers and all manner of non-traditional instruments (flute!). The new King Gizzard album I’m In Your Mind Fuzz came out at the end of the month, but two weeks early we got nearly the whole thing, beginning with the tremendous five-song segue that opens the album to also start the show. That mini-set literally never let up in its astounding energy. When the band finally came up for air a good twenty minutes into the set, you could almost hear an exhale from the crowd and feel a collective realization that this band had truly arrived — lots of mouthed wows and head shakes. Gizz was on and the room was electric. The remainder of the set was equally outstanding, including the end of the show which featured two extended jam sessions and finished with the band’s epic “Head On/Pill”.

At the end of the CMJ week, the appropriately named annual “CMJ Hangover Brunch” hosted by Panache Booking featured a completely different King Gizzard set from earlier in the month. This event was conceived as a quieter, more mellow experience and the Gizz played off that idea. The pared down version of the band displayed their talents at singing/songwriting and it was no less compelling than the psych-out aspect of the band. The October 26 set featured only two songs from the new album, the aptly named “Slow Jam” songs. After the set we had a nice chat with band leader Stu MacKenzie, an intelligent and thoughtful guy whose personality is well captured in this excellent piece in Interview Magazine.

King Gizzard is back in Australia and not likely to tour the US again until the Summer of 2015, but those shows will be events not to miss.

I also recorded the crazy Halloween show and that will be on the site within the next few weeks.

Both of these shows were recorded and mixed in the exact same manner by Baby’s FOH Devin. We blended the room mics with his excellent multitrack mix and the sound quality of each is superb, truly capturing the completely different feel of each of the sets. Enjoy!

Generally, when I see a review of a band posted on this website that I wasn’t aware of, I take notice. So it went with the recording of Palehound at the now-in-the-history-books Death By Audio earlier this year. Then there was the memorable opening line, which pointed out that the band’s Hell Bent EP was written by a college freshman and half the band can’t legally buy beer. And thus, a shoo-in for an invite to our annual unofficial CMJ Day Party at Cake Shop was born.

As we noted then, the band continues to work on new material, and this show already served up several strong new numbers that weren’t in that set back in May. The band came out swinging with “Drooler”, followed by several new numbers from the band’s forthcoming album. Frontwoman Ellen Kempner and her full band continue to gel well, and if the new songs are any indication, this much-buzzed-about band should continue to enjoy the fan love for their newest work. While the band only had six songs to work with, they made the most of them, closing out with one of our favorites, “Pet Carrot”. Oddly enough, Kempner originally thought of the song as a reject, but crowds disagreed. We’re glad they did!

I recorded this set in the same manner as our other recordings from this day, with Schoeps MK4V microphones up front and a soundboard feed from house engineer Clint. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Cass McCombs: November 1 and October 31, 2014 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

On night two of the Cass McCombs / Meat Puppets stand at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade, the order was switched, with McCombs the “headliner” playing the longer set. Since his breakout moment a few years ago, McCombs has shifted direction a bit, turning his sound toward the jammier side of things with an expanded band. We pointed this out last year when McCombs first brought his material from Big Wheel and Others to the stage at Bowery Ballroom. This time, Cass had a new band in tow but a similar attitude, letting songs proceed at a languid pace that gave the band time to grow into the tunes. In that sense, the two shows offer a bit of a contrast, as the Halloween show finds the band self-editing a bit to make the time requirements, while the November 1st show gives you a full-on jamfest, including a very extended version of “County Line” from 2011’s breakout Wit’s End as an encore. Once again it was arguably the Halloween show that once again took the cake, as the reduced set time both focused Cass’ energies and also yielded a unique cover of Metallica’s “The Unforgiven”. Whatever your Cass preferences, this twofer tour with the Meat Puppets is a can’t miss. The bands are finishing up this year on the West Coast, with the tour dates here.

Each of these sets were recorded in the same manner as Eric PH’s and my respective sets from Halloween. The November 1st set was recorded with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed from Kyle of Rough Trade, while the Halloween show is Audio Technica 3031 microphones and Kyle’s feed. Both are excellent. Enjoy!

Juan Wauters: October 26, 2014 Panache CMJ Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I will admit that I just never got the Beets. Back last decade, in an era when every band’s vocals were steeped in reverb and instruments were as “garage” as possible, the Beets took it to the extreme, creating a muddy and harsh sound that some found inspired but that I believed was over the top. I’ll also admit to mailing in the post for my one Beets recording that ended up on the site six years ago. But who knew that buried underneath all of those exaggerated garage effects was an extraordinarily talented singer and songwriter. Juan Wauters solo career has been a revelation thus far. My best comparison would be to a modern day Jonathan Richman — if JoJo was Uruguayan and from Queens. Juan has an ease about his performing style and like Richman, straddles the fine line between sincerity and humor, often keeping it so close to the vest that you’re not entirely sure whether he’s putting you on, or telling you something that you need to hear, or even both. Last year, his debut album on Captured Tracks N.A.P. (North American Poetry) was a collection of home recordings made over a two year period and seems to have just scratched the surface of his talents. We’ve seen Juan Wauters twice in the last month, including this set as part of the outstanding Panache Booking’s “CMJ Hangover Brunch”, where Juan played as a duo in a makeshift “stage” in front of the outer room bar at Baby’s All Right. While the setlist did include four songs from NAP, it also included five terrific new numbers including our favorites “I’m All Wrong” and “Let the Mystery Be There” (streaming below). The quality of the new material bodes very well for Juan’s next release which we expect will be soon, since he just released a video for a new song “Nena”. Juan Wauters will be touring Europe for much of November and December, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards on-stage and mixed with a feed from the PA used to power the vocals and Juan’s acoustic guitar. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

This past Monday night, the Stars began their tour in support of new album No One Is Lost and made their third stop in Brooklyn at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. After a fantastic opening set from fellow Canadian band Hey Rosetta!, the Stars took the stage to the sweet, lonely lilt of Judy Garland and promptly kicked off the party with the first single from their new album, “From The Night.” The sold-out crowd apparently read an album review or three and figured a dance party might happen, so when the retro disco beat kicked in and singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan hit the chorus, it felt like the weekend was back in full force.

Much of the press about the new album has focused on how the band is making more dance tunes — and yes, Millan did collaborate on a recent track with EDM DJ Porter Robinson. But the real story seems to be that the cute, ironic fatalism that was present in the younger band’s work has evolved; the cabaret has shuttered because the stakes are too high. In fact, during the recording of No One Is Lost, the band’s long-time tour manager, Eoin O’Leary, was diagnosed with cancer. So if the Stars are guilty as charged of making a big fat dance album, so be it; O’Leary is now in recovery, and there is cause to celebrate.

On Monday, while there was certainly plenty of dancing, there was also a huge variety. Slow burners, disco tracks, and the good old-fashioned pop songs the Stars are known for — they made sure the setlist had something in it for everyone. The lineup was a mix of brand new songs and deep cuts dating all the way back to their debut album, Nightsongs. One of, if not the very highest points of the night was a reworked version of “Going, Going, Gone,” which Emily Haines of Metric sang with the band back in 2001. While the original version is earnest, spare and stripped down, the new version they performed Monday night featured melancholy synths, a minimalist backbeat, and heartbreakingly beautiful vocals. The new version felt more like a downtempo afterhours clubby version of the Stars — in the best of ways.

Other highlights included 2012’s “Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It,” a sing-along for crowd favorite “Elevator Love Letter,” and a raucous new song called “Trap Door” that would make Ric Ocasek proud. The band closed out the main set with the new album’s title track, and all the arms in the venue went up in unison at the refrain: “Put your hands up because everybody dies!”

I recorded Stars using a pairs of Schoeps hypercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed graciously provided by the band and house engineers. They did an outstanding job and the sound quality is excellent. We hope you enjoy!
