He’s been recording albums for more than ten years, and Kevin Devine decided to have a party to celebrate. And what a party it was, as Kevin came bearing gifts in the form of three of his albums played straight through in three sets at Webster Hall on Saturday last. He performed his first album Circle Gets The Square as a solo acoustic set, and mixed in one new Sandy-inspired song. The final two sets and the encores were played with two different version of the band, as set two consisted of the latest album Between the Concrete and Clouds with a stripped down God Damn Band, and the final set of Split the Country, Split the Street (and encores) with a full version of the band. This was an ambitious undertaking, but in the end it proved that Kevin and the God Damn Band were up to the task. Overall, the night saw the performance of thirty-eight separate songs in close to three full hours of music — a marathon of sorts, but also a full-scale celebration of the career thus far of one of indie-pop’s great songwriters and perhaps one of its most under-appreciated ones at that. The result was one of the best shows we saw all year.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in front of the soundboard in the balcony and mixed with a superb soundboard feed. For the first set, I did not fully reset my levels after a high-volume soundcheck, so that Kevin’s quiet set has low levels on the master that had to be boosted, leading to some ambient noise. For the second set, everything was dialed in perfectly and the sound is superb. Finally, the rowdiness of the now-drunk crowd is maybe a bit too apparent in the third set, which sounds excellent but has quite a bit of shouting, even with the board feed boosted. With those caveats, enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 10, 2012 Maxwell’s (Hanukkah Night 3) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

While Hanukkah at Maxwell’s is a long-time Yo La Tengo tradition, another of the band’s regular gigs is the WFMU Marathon where YLT plays requests which are invariably eclectic covers. While Night 3 of this year’s Hanukkah was a tremendous show for a variety of reasons, it was one cover that stole the show. This night will forever be known as the “Sister Ray” show. I asked YLT’s long-time superb FOH Mark if he’d ever seen them play the song — they have done a ton of VU covers over the years — and he only remembered one other performance of “Sister Ray”. Perhaps fueled by the guest performances of various members of the Feelies, the band’s set was a scortcher from the get-go. On any other night, the band’s new cover of Neil Young’s “Time Fades Away” would have been the story, it was the night’s last song where the magic reached its peak. This wasn’t a simple walk through one of the Velvet Underground’s most compelling songs, it was a full-on seventeen-minute immersion into the song. Glenn Mercer and Bill Million joined and the noisy axe trio with Ira was a breathtaking display of authentic garage style guitar.

I recorded this show in the same manner at the other nights and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: December 5, 2012 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Since we’ve been following Deer Tick almost from the beginning — from John McCauley as a solo performer, to the days as a trio, and even as a cover band, all the way up to their sold out shows at big venues, it seemed natural that we’d be there for what amounts to a month-long career retrospective at Brooklyn Bowl. Deer Tick will essentially be playing their entire catalog each Wednesday in December. Last week, the band played their second album Born on Flag Day and their EP More Fuel For the Fire straight through. While some of these songs haven’t been played in years, some in different arrangements, and some not at all, Deer Tick seemed quite comfortable with the material. Sure, there were a couple of false starts, but overall this show was just about as tight as they get and certainly as intense as a regular set. And just in case we’d thought they’d forsaken the first album, Deer Tick played six songs from War Elephant as an encore set.

Tonight’s show at Brooklyn Bowl will feature a complete performance of The Black Dirt Sessions and Holy Shit It’s Christmas EP.

I recorded this set with the hypercardioid Neumanns upfront and pointed at the stacks to avoid ambient noise and mixed it with a superb stereo feed from FOH Melanie. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

These Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows celebrate and reinforce connections. Connections among the band’s superfans, many of whom have traveled hundreds if not thousands of miles. Connections among musicians who have collaborated for years, or may be collaborating for the first time. Connections from the past – no less than two friends I spoke to on this night told me how “Our Way To Fall” was or had been “their song” with their significant other. And, of course, our connection with this little and strange and wonderful trio, made grander both by those with whom they share the stage, and the ambition with which they share it. Each of night of this Festival of Lights, in the band’s spiritual home of Maxwell’s in flood-battered Hoboken, there will be new connections made, old ones renewed, new community created.

How appropriate, then, that this Sunday night’s special guest and opening act was the Sun Ra Arkestra.  Since the mid-1950s, the Sun Ra Arkestra has been an ever-evolving jazz collective, led by a bandleader (Sun Ra himself, until his death, and today, Marshall Allen) but in many ways a musical organism, each component unique and irreplaceable, no part ever static. We knew the Arkestra would blow us away, and they did, with an hour of frenetic, spaced-out improvisational jazz that ended with the full Arkestra circling through the crowd, playing all the way out the door. We also expected that their presence would have an impact on Yo La Tengo’s song selection and style.

The band got an assist tonight from the night’s comedian and erstwhile musician-about-town (I’ve seen play recently with Dinosaur Jr. for their 25th anniversary show as well as Telekinesis) Fred Armisen, who played drums all night. Having Fred on drums gave Georgia more freedom to come out from behind the kit, and the result was more songs that featured her on vocals. The fast version of “Today Is the Day” was one such moment, along with set closer “Dreaming” (performed, ironically, without any of the Sun Ra Arkestra).  We also got to hear the first live version of the band’s new single, “Stupid Things”, from their forthcoming Matador release, Fade.  But it was the second part of the set, when honorary Arkestra members Sabir Mateen and Darius Jones took the stage, that turned this show into a full-blown freakout. Starting off with YLT’s rarely-played 1991 Bar/None seven-inch, “Walking Away From You”, the combo of Ira, Georgia, James, Armisen, Mateen and Jones then gave us an intense “Shaker” before hitting the back-to-back pieces de resistance, a ten-minute version of Sun Ra’s “Nuclear War” led by James on vocals (but with a hilarious turn by Georgia), followed by the thirteen-and-a-half minute psychedelic opus of “And The Glitter Is Gone” from 2009’s Popular Songs. I doubt this song will be given better treatment any time in the rest of the band’s career.

I recorded this show in the usual manner for this venue, with microphones mounted in the front corner of the soundboard and mixed with an outstanding feed provided by longtime YLT FOH Mark and Maxwells’ house sound tech Carson. As with last night’s set, some new mics were in the mix, this time MBHO KA200N cardiods, which are prized for their crisp, clean sound.  The results, like last night, are excellent, with this mix favoring the room sound a bit more. Enjoy!

The Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows at Maxwell’s have always been an eight-day embarrassment of riches — we’ll readily admit to being spoiled over the years with the openers, the guests, and the many special moments that we’ve been fortunate to witness and to capture. Last year, despite a serious health scare Ira played all eight shows, sometimes confined to a chair on stage. This year the obvious concern is the massive storm damage to Hoboken itself — the charity for Night 1 was the Rebuild Hoboken Relief Fund. Sometimes we forget that the centerpiece of it all, the band themselves, are really the greatest gift of all. On this first night, their set was a subdued affair but that’s not to say its wasn’t special. The opener of a fifteen-minute tribute to the city “Night Falls on Hoboken” was both poignant and intense. Yo La Tengo is releasing a new album in January, Fade on January 15, and we also saw a couple of the new songs, one a live premiere. Of course this wouldn’t be Hanukkah without at least one guest appearance and on this night it was the opener Raybeats guitarist Jody Harris who played on both the Richard Hell cover and an intense “Pass The Hatchet” that we’re streaming below. This performance of Hatchet rivals any of previous years and offered a glimpse of what can expect over the next week. Happy Hanukkah indeed!

We recorded this show in the usual manner, with microphones mounted in the front corner of the soundboard and mixed with an outstanding feed provided by longtime YLT FOH Mark and Maxwell’s house sound tech Carson. This is the first year that we’re using the new Sennheiser Cards in this room and I’m quite pleased with its handling of this small room. The results are superb. Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: December 1, 2012 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Here at NYCTaper, we have a special place in our hearts for Dinosaur Jr. Not only do they make outstanding music and have chops second to none but they have long supported the taping community, making several appearances on this website including one of the first recordings posted here. We were particularly ecstatic when the original lineup of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph reunited in 2005 and have since released three superb albums. In the interim, we have done our best to capture as many of their concerts as we can but none of us grasped the full extent of what we were in for when they announced this celebratory show marking the 25th anniversary of the seminal and influential ‘You’re Living All Over Me‘ album. In addition to playing the disc in its entirety, allusions were made to many other tracks and “special friends” making an appearance. We wound up being clobbered with a setlist and guest lineup worthy of an alt/indie-rock uber fan’s wet dream: Lee Ranaldo and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Frank Black from the Pixies, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Dale Crover from the Melvins, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements, Kyle Spence from Harvey Milk, Kurt Vile, Al Cisneros from Sleep, Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene, Suzanne Thorpe of Mercury Rev, Don Fleming, Dante Ferrando, John Petkovic and Fred Armisen. On a night with more highlights and jaw-dropping performances than one can count, there was a wonderful interplay between all the artists and a realization by the crowd that this concert was to be savored. Thank you J, Lou and Murph for the awesome holiday gift you honored us with. It was an extraordinary way to begin drawing this year to a close.

Thanks to Dinosaur Jr.’s management and the team at Terminal 5, we were given the opportunity to set up and record from the dead-center spot towards the back of the floor. With such an ideal location, acidjack and I ran three distinctly different microphone configurations in an effort to ensure the best possible recording we could make: Milab VM-44 Links (DIN) and AKG C 414 B-XLS’s in both Blumlein and M/S configurations. The results are uniformly excellent so we are offering all three sources for download. We certainly hope you like what you hear as much as we did. Enjoy!
