Prussia is a self-described “experimental pop” band from Detroit. With two keyboards, often three guitars, and a range of sound effects to supplement the unique vocals of singer Ryan Spencer, Prussia is at the forefront of the burgeoning Michigan underground music scene. Last week, the band traveled to NYC for CMJ and performed seven times. We were fortunate to have them play at both shows we hosted this year — the NYCTaper CMJ show at Cake Shop on Thursday and the Golden Ratio / BirdDog Promo / NYCTaper show at Cameo Gallery on Saturday. Prussia played in the second slot for both shows, but the early afternoon set time did not detract from their energy or musical prowess. Behind all of the inventive experimental indie is simply five outstanding musicians. Prussia’s third release is their new album Poor English, which is available in a “name your price” format on Bandcamp. Their set included four of the new songs, two of which are streaming below.

I recorded the Cake Shop set in the same manner as all the of the recordings already posted from that day and the sound quality is superb. The Cameo Gallery recording is a mix of the Neumann microphones on a stand in front of the soundboard booth and mixed with a soundboard feed. The room is a boomier than Cake Shop, so that while the sound is quite excellent, its a very different recording from the Cake Shop one. Enjoy both!

North Mississippi Allstars: October 28, 2011 Brooklyn Bowl – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

October 31, 2011
By

After hearing this site’s incredible capture of brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars back in June, I knew I needed to see what this Mississippi blues act was all about for myself.  Brooklyn Bowl – now the obvious heir to Wetlands in terms of this type of programming – was the perfect place for the introduction.  As is the norm for a Friday night, a lot of the drunken suburban crowd was mostly there to party, but those paying more attention were rewarded with some incredible guitar work from Luther, percussion from Cody, and bass from Chris Chew.  The band gave us a veritable education in the blues, mixing in their own favorites with classic covers like Bob Dylan’s “Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again”, which appears on their latest record, Keys to the Kingdom.  The record’s title is an homage to the brothers’ father, the blues legend Jim Dickinson, but it could as easily be a reference to their own place in the blues pantheon.  NMAS are the honest heirs of this centuries-old American tradition, and they will no doubt do their best to make the genre as alive, fresh, and relevant as it was a hundred years ago.

The entire nyctaper crew was on-hand for this event with a slew of mics at full height above the crowd.  This particular recording is a combination of AKG large-diaphragm mics to give “air” at the top end and edge to the guitar, combined with Schoeps supercardiods to add the direct sound.  While there is no mistaking that it’s a Friday night crowd, the sound quality of the music is outstanding.  Please help out with any setlist corrections – it was my first time seeing the band live and there were a a few songs I did not recognize or couldn’t figure out.  Enjoy!

Oh Ok Cake Shop
[screen shot from this video]

Oh-OK came to NYC last weekend at the behest of Cake Shop’s Andy Bodor, whose inventive booking is one of the charms of Ludlow Street’s primary intimate venue. The band had performed at the Athens Popfest 2011 earlier in the week in an unlikely reunion and their first show since another one-off reunion in 2005. Oh-OK released two mini-albums in their three years of existence before the members moved on to other projects. The lead vocalist Linda Hopper is perhaps best known for her work with Magnapop, and a former Oh-OK guitarist was Matthew Sweet. Bassist and vocalist Lynda Stipe is also known for her work with Flash to Bang Time and of course as being the younger sister of REM’s Michael Stipe. In 2002, Collector’s Choice issued The Complete Recordings, which encompassed the two mini-albums, some assorted tracks, and a 1984 concert from Athens. The liner notes of that release were written by Robert Christgau, whose description of the band is not-unexpectedly dead-on. Earlier this week, the Athens label HHBTM re-issued a digital version, called The Complete Reissue. At Cake Shop last Saturday, Oh-OK was playful and relaxed and worked quickly through a chronological performance of most of their catalog in a terrific thirty-minute set. The band now includes three young ringers, whose guitar and drum work provided an excellent backup for the two frontpersons, Linda and Lynda, who have aged very gracefully. The music has aged well too, as its simple and almost childlike melodies are instantly catchy and earworm-worthy. I’ve been humming “Such N Such” all week, and its streaming below.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the CMJ recordings from two days earlier and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Hoop Dreams: October 20, 2011 NYCTaper CMJ Show at Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We have covered so many Captured Tracks bands over the years — the label’s roster lines up pretty closely with the tastes of the people of this site. So it was no surprise to us that Hoop Dreams, who so impressed at Glasslands in August, were on Captured Tracks and poised to release their first record. The band has a sound clearly influenced by early 80s Manchester UK — and which sounds quite like Captured Tracks label-head Mike Sniper’s Blank Dogs. Hoop Dreams performed in the third slot at our CMJ show, but their 2pm performance was the first of the day to fill the room. Max Brooks deep baritone vocals are delivered with confidence and are complimented perfectly by the melodic guitar lines and aggressive bass guitar, often supplemented by electric violin. The band performed their only current release, the single “XCPR” along with much of what we believe will comprise their debut album. We are streaming the set’s final track “Jumping Fences”, which finished the show on an energetic high note. Hoop Dreams returns to NYC for a gig at Glasslands on November 12.

I recorded this set in the same manner as all of the other sets from this day and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Arbouretum: October 14, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Thrill Jockey’s band page for Arbouretum describes them as a “taper’s dream”, and they could well be right about that.  With open song structures, a hard-rocking, Southern-informed psych-rock sound an solid dose of showmanship, the band comes off a bit like an updated, thinking man’s version of bands like CCR and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and they play a hell of a good show that doesn’t belie that comparison.  The band took the stage behind a veil of smoke, launching into a brief psychedelic intro before hitting full stride on “False Spring” the leadoff track to their 2009 record, Song of the Pearl.  That led into “White Bird”, the sole song played from their latest Thrill Jockey release, The Gathering.  The musical virtuosity only went up from there, with “Down By the Fall Line” leading directly into “Mohammed’s Hex and Bounty” in a combined 17-minute piece that found the band in top form.  Frontman Dave Heumann puts a lot of thought into his dense, literary lyrics, and (somewhat unusually for an indie artist) actually sings them so you can hear them.  As audience members called out various rarities and covers throughout the set, the band finally obliged with a ripping version of CCR’s “Long As I Can See the Light.”

I recorded this set with my usual mounted setup of DPAs on the center post plus a soundboard feed from Josh, the head FOH engineer at Glasslands. The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!
