The revivified (as of 2005) Seattle band Earth is a behemoth of sound. Progenitors of an entire microgenre (“drone doom”), the band’s latest incarnation is a slightly more epic, and also more delicate outfit that combines elements of heavy grunge guitars, drone and americana. The band also has several ties to the band Nirvana, including lead guitarist and founding member Dylan Carlson’s well-documented friendship with Kurt Cobain, and current bandmember and cellist Lori Goldston’s role as touring cellist for Nirvana (and cellist on MTV Unplugged In New York).

But the band’s connections and history are only footnotes to one of the most powerful of the sets I have seen since I began attending the various New York-based All Tomorrow’s Parties festivals. This fourth year of the festival (awkwardly rechristened “ATP Presents I’ll Be Your Mirror”) was relocated from the quirky (and sketchy) holiday resort where it was held for the previous three years to the more welcoming environs of the Asbury Park, NJ – home of Bruce Springsteen and many other notable artists (including recent NYCTaper favorite Nicole Atkins, as we learned last week). Along with the relocation came new venues, including the weathered-but-still-standing Paramount Theater, which provided the ideal venue for Earth’s prettified slowcore.

The band played five longform compositions, each of which Carlson introduced by name, including the band’s first-ever song “Ouroboros Is Broken” as well as the title track from its latest record, Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light, a sequel to which is due soon. Each song was positively massive, cinematic in its sweep, with Carlson’s darkly-tuned guitar riffs threading in between Goldston’s somber cello, all backed by a focused but dense wall of bass and drums. Earth are one of many examples of the eclectic but brilliant programming of ATP – a modern classic of a band that may have been overlooked by some, but is a fixture for those who know them. Not only was theirs the best-sounding set of the festival, but one of the most inspired – reminding us of the critical essence of the early Seattle sound, and where it could have gone if it had the chance to grow up. Indeed, ATP festivals are always somewhere to be inspired, not only by outstanding music, but by the fans and sense of community they engender. It is my privilege to bring you but a small piece of this experience.

I recorded this set with the DPA 4021 microphones from the optimum spot in the venue. Especially given the use of a mobile rig, it is one of my finest captures of the year. Enjoy!

The other set by an ATP band that allows audio taping – Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra – will be posted to the site in the coming days as well.

Explosions In The Sky: October 3, 2011 Wellmont Theatre – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

An Explosions In The Sky concert can be an emotional experience simply because of the depth and breadth of the music created on stage. At Wellmont Theatre on Monday night, EITS performed a ninety-minute set of their post-rock mini-symphonies to a rapt audience. There were a few hoots and some random clapping, but for the most part the 2000 capacity crowd were mesmerized. Inexplicably, there was a toddler in the balcony and at the most quiet moments of the music, she could be heard throughout the theatre. EITS are touring on their newest album Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, but the set featured only two new tracks and songs were selected judiciously throughout their catalog. We have chosen to stream “The Birth and Death of the Day”, the opening track from their 2007 release All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, and a piece of extraordinary beauty. The song is a reversal of the common EITS structure as it opens with a crashing of the instruments and evolves into a simple but quietly eloquent multi-guitar passage. The Explosions In The Sky world tour continues through January.

Hi and Lo and I recorded this set from the front and center balcony rail. This location afforded us a direct line to the huge stacks and also provided a tremendous soundstage. We combined his Schoeps hypers with the DPA 4021s and the result is a tremendously rich and deep recording. Enjoy!

The Antlers opening set was also recorded and will be posted soon.

Felice Brothers: September 29, 2011 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

When we recorded The Felice Brothers at the Bell House in May, acidjack noted that the band’s new album Celebration, Florida represented a stylistic advance and a more varied mature approach to the americana genre that the band had perfected over their first seven albums. Four months later, The Felice Brothers tour on the album returned to NYC, this time at the more spacious Webster Hall. While the Celebration material dominated the set, this was truly a show for the fans as the group featured some rare numbers and a very appropriate cover. Springsteen’s “Darkness” was a celebratory version, and as the Boss’s fans are often exuberant towards their hero, The Felice Brothers fans at Webster Hall were equally voracious. The crowd-participation number “Whiskey in My Whiskey” is a good barometer of the audience’s involvement at any particular Felice show, and this crowd was up for the challenge. We are streaming the excellent version of “Whiskey” below. The Felice Brothers extensive tour continues throughout the US this Fall before they head over to Europe in December.

We recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted inside the soundboard booth front and center of the balcony. The microphones were mixed with a well-balanced soundboard feed. There are instances in the recording of digital interface interference, which I believe was from the violin’s DI and also some interference in the vocal microphone. These problems are intermittent and should not impede listening enjoyment of a superb performance.

Nicole Atkins: September 29, 2011 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

After several near misses, we were fortunate to finally catch Nicole Atkins live for the first time since March at Maxwell’s. As she is currently on tour in support of The Felice Brothers (recording coming soon), Nicole’s set was an abbreviated version of her recent performances. While we pined for her mid-set solo segment, her Webster Hall show on Friday was full of peak moments — her band The Black Sea continues to impress, particularly guitarist Irina Yalkowsky whose aggressive slide guitar work shined in several numbers. As Nicole continues to tour behind Mondo Amore, that album’s songs predominated the setlist. The Leadbelly cover “In The Pines” was dedicated to Kurt Cobain (Nirvana also covered the song), and it was perhaps the most powerful song of the set. We are streaming it below. Nicole Atkins has several more local dates coming up this month, including the Petty Fest, a City Winery show, and the O Positive Festival in Kingston NY.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted in the soundboard booth at the front and center of the balcony and mixed with a soundboard feed. There is some interference from a digital interface on stage that is noticeable at quieter moments of the show, but overall the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Megafaun: September 24, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Megafaun released their third full length album this past week (self-titled), and the reviews are consistently positive while also reporting that the band has taken on a more serious and straightforward approach to their music. On Saturday at Mercury Lounge, the band exhibited this style as they performed three all-business numbers straight out of the gate. We’ve grown accustomed to Megafaun’s entertaining banter and stage mannerisms, but the Mercury set concentrated primarily on the music. Given that the trio (now quartet — a bass has been added to the live set) are superb musicians in their own right, this was not an unwelcome development. It was also not a coincidence that all three opening tracks appear on Megafaun. We have chosen to stream “Get Right”, which seemed to fit particularly with the new full-band sound. Megafaun’s tour continues throughout the Midwest and West coast for the next several weeks.

I recorded this set with the Neumann micrphones supplemented with an excellent soundboard feed, and the quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Mt. Eerie: September 21, 2011 285 Kent

Phil Elverum is one of those elusive and otherworldly presences in music, who can take the simplest organ line or bell tone and build a surprising, hauntingly beautiful song around it. Best known for his work under the moniker The Microphones, Elverum rechristened the project Mt. Eerie in the middle of the last decade, but continues with many of The Microphones’ themes and sounds. This show at 285 Kent, presented by the legendary ToddP, had the type of intimate feel that echoed the very bedrooms where Elverum has made many of his compositions. This nine-song set showcased material new and old, and represented Elverum and the touring band’s triumph over what had been a very finicky PA system earlier in the evening. The band followed this show with a Monday performance at Le Poisson Rouge – another venue of considerable charm – but really, what better place to see a bedroom recordist than one of the Brooklyn scene’s coolest living rooms?

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones near the right stack, coupled with a soundboard feed. Other than some light noise from a fan near the mics during the first couple songs, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
