Megafaun: April 16, 2011 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

This Spring, we were fortunate to catch Megafaun four times in a span of less than three weeks. The final performance was their opening set for Sharon Van Etten at Music Hall in April. The set featured several new numbers, and now four months down the road the band is poised to release their new album (self-titled) on Hometapes Records on September 20, 2011. The band will also launch tours in September through Europe and the US. The local dates are a pair of nights at Mercury Lounge, on Saturday September 24 and Sunday September 25. We expect to capture at least one of the Mercury dates.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones on a stand in the upfront of the right side of the balcony, fifteen feet from the stage. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Exitmusic: August 19, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

A Friday night show at Glasslands, setup by PopGun Booking, featured four great bands including Exitmusic, a duo of Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church. This Secretly Canadian band has been on the scene for a number of years, but recently signed to their new label and are slated to release their upcoming EP, From Silence. While we missed Exitmusic during their recent residency at Pianos, the show at Glasslands did not disappoint as they played six songs, two of which we had not heard before. Their first song, “The Sea,” filled the room with a complex, layered sound that immediately had the listener fully immersed. By the last song, a seven minute epic titled “Sparks of Light,” it was clear that Exitmusic has a captivating sound that will, no doubt, continue to evolve with each live performance.

This set was recorded with a pair of Schoeps Cardioid microphones clamped high on a column dead-center in the room. Derek, Glassland’s sound engineer, provided an incredibly well balanced feed which resulted in one of the best mixes I’ve heard from Glasslands. The sound quality is excellent and we hope you enjoy!

White Fence: August 13, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

One of the real joys of seeing live shows is seeing an opening band that just blows you away. That was the case with this opening set from White Fence on a stacked Bowery Ballroom bill led by NYCTaper favorites Woods. White Fence’s records are the solo effort Tim Presley, who also does time in the Strange Boys and Darker My Love, so for this show his backing band consisted of Nick Murray on Drums, and two members of Woods (Jarvis and Kevin), who handled Presley’s material as capably as if it were their own. Presley brings a Dylanesque vocal turn to his garage-psych songs, but the laid-back vibe of the songs doesn’t mean the playing isn’t also top notch, particularly Presley’s guitar work. The band’s entire set brought the rapidly-packing room to peak energy level, climaxing with jammed-out version of “Sticky Fruitman Has Faith” that was worthy of the night’s headliner in its ambitious scope. Whatever Presley’s other commitments musically, I hope he makes this project a priority, as White Fence is a can’t-miss band on any bill they’re on.

We recorded this set in the same manner as the Woods set, and the results are similarly outstanding. Enjoy!

Minerva Lions: August 7, 2011 BBS at the Richardson – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

After a great set by Teletextile at the temporarily-related Backyard Brunch Sessions at The Richardson, Minerva Lions played an inspired set that showed off their soulful side, and debuted a new song to boot. The band has a classic, but updated sound that incorporates elements of folk, alt-country and rock; if you hear a little Wilco in them, that’s not such a bad thing. Lead vocalist Jared Samuel has a compelling, easy to like voice that can deliver laid-back phrasing, as on the opener “Megrims”, as easily as the deep blues of their cover of “Bring It On Home to Me” by Sam Cooke. Songwriting, as ever, is key, though, and Minerva Lions are on point there, too, with songs that are instantly memorable. Even in a four-song set, we saw several sides of the band stylistically, with the organ-dominated songs like the newly-debuted “You & Yr Arrow” giving a very different vibe than the more straight-ahead guitar sounds of songs like “Megrims.” Even without the backyard, Minerva Lions gave us a lovely, all-American music experience for a warm summer afternoon.

Joan of Arc: August 10, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Whether you find Joan of Arc frustrating or incredible is likely to come down to your overall view of what rock music is about: If you hold the attitude of “I am here, you must entertain me with classics and catchy tunes”, you are likely to be in the former camp.  You’re also probably that person that customizes every dinner order beyond recognition. A sauce-on-the-sider, if you will. People like you would do well to avoid bands like Joan of Arc, who tend to reward the other type of listener, who enjoys being challenged, who enjoys taking in the breadth of an artist’s vision, and who would rather see something new than something familiar.

Which is not to say that this set by Tim Kinsella’s main project of the past 15 years was not thoroughly entertaining. Kinsella, who made his name in Cap’n Jazz before that band split up (other than their brief reunion last summer that we recorded HERE and HERE), can put on a fierce live show, and keep some wacky stage banter in the mix as well. Eschewing emo-or-whatever-you-call-it tradition, Joan of Arc’s set is heavy on variety – a short burst of almost-pure pop here, a lengthy instrumental there. This set had both, as well as encore songs from another Kinsella side project, Owls. The band’s virtuosity couldn’t be denied – they rocked, time signature or structure-of-the-moment be damned. Songs thrive on dense, angular riffs and plaintive vocals. The resulting recording is a thing of beauty as well – as clear an indication if there ever was one that a small club, excellent sound engineer (Kevin, as usual) and band that knows what they’re doing is an unbeatable combination.

Kevin’s soundboard feed blended perfectly with the Schoeps supercardiod microphones, and the resulting recording is clear, crisp and excellent. Enjoy!

Deerhunter: August 23, 2011 Webster Hall – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The first show I saw by the ultra-talented recording artist Bradford Cox was an Atlas Sound set at the ATP New York music festival in 2009. It was a disaster. Consisting mostly of pedal troubles and tuning woes that took up more than half the set, with Bradford apologizing profusely, it didn’t live up to the promise of the recorded material. So, despite the unique, compelling sound of Bradford’s records, I was reluctant about the live show – even though both Deerhunter and Atlas Sound have been featured on this site many times (albeit not my recordings).

This Deerhunter show at Webster Hall erased my doubts – and made me kick myself for not going to see this band sooner. This show was one of the best I have seen this year, with Bradford confidently, brilliantly owning his instrument, his voice, and the stage. Deerhunter is rock music – popular(ish) rock music, at least – at its bleeding edge, where Radiohead used to be, creating an entirely new sound from the tools that have (mostly) been there for rock’s 40+ years. This show kicked off with the anthemic “Fluorescent Grey”, featuring original bandmember Colin Mee, who stuck around for the first five songs. The band spent the entire show bathed in green light, with Cox commanding a visceral torrent of sound. The band’s live sound feels like a living, breathing thing – an alien form that surges, crackles, crinkles and trills. The band’s best songs on this night were otherworldly: “Nothing Ever Happened” morphed into an extended jam, with Cox melding in some of Patti Smith’s “Land”. “Twilight at Carbon Lake”, closing the main set, held us in rapture. Almost the entire show was seamless, with extended guitar loops and chirps filling in between songs. The show ended with “Calvary Scars II”, which bled into an extended loop that terminated as the lights went up.

As this show ended, I understood what had happened at ATP a few years ago. Cox may not always be perfect – someone as prolific, as ambitious as he is almost can’t be. But he is the kind of artist whose excesses must not only be tolerated, but celebrated – this creator needs every encouragement we can give him to create and succeed. And when he does succeed, you get a night like this night: phenomenal.

I recorded this set from the center of the floor with the DPA microphones. I spent a great deal of time post-processing and was rewarded with an excellent recording than is free of unnecessary crowd chatter almost throughout. No recording can match the experience of being at a show like this – but turn this up, and you might get close. Enjoy!
