nyctaper Change in Policy – Only pre-approved Recordings

Frankly, the Natalie Merchant removal has become kind of embarrassing. In reality, we should have received permission or not recorded at all.

From this point forward, we will attempt to get permission in advance from artists (unless those artists already have a pre-existing “taper-friendly” policy or have previously communicated agreement to us) and will not record without permission. We had been more strict in this policy earlier in the existence of this site, but we’ve become a bit brazen lately.

The result will probably be less of a variety of music on this site, but we feel it will assist in the continued viability of the site. For the immediate future, we have contacted the NY Guitar Festival, Magnetic Fields, and Meredith Monk with requests for permission. Decisions on those recordings are pending. We will not record Springsteen. All of the other artists listed in upcoming events will be recorded.

nyctaper Ads Removed

The Natalie Merchant removal has created a bit of a stir in her official forum. Again I’m being accused of “profiting” from live recording. The total ad revenue for this site for the entire 8 months of existence is a grand total of $56, which is just about exactly what I paid for the ticket for that singular concert.

The ads are exponentially more trouble than they are worth. This site loses money by the bucketful, so $56 less is just one less drop in that bucket.

The Amazon links that are currently in each existing post (for which nyctaper has received $11 in commissions total) will remain. No new Amazon product box links will appear for new recordings. The readers will have to seek out official releases through the links that will still be provided to artist’s official website. Please continue to support the artists, that is the primary goal of this site.

So the ads are gone. The donation button remains ($17 since the beginning of December for those who are curious). And yes, at the risk of the appearance of corruption, I will accept a beer if you see me at a show.

Now how am I going to fill up the sidebars!

It was nearly 19 years ago when I last saw Natalie Merchant perform live. She was then the strong-voiced and charismatic singer of 10,000 Maniacs who was a bit quirky if not a little cold. After nearly two decades of success, including Maniacs charting singles, and a solo career that eclipsed her prior band, Natalie stopped touring and had a child.

Her announcement of six New York City dates — her first NYC concerts in 4 years — at the intimate Hiro Ballroom were a pleasant surprise, if not a complete shock. 2008 finds Natalie’s voice and charisma as strong and sharp as ever, but the years have added stage comfort, wit, and charming storytelling abilities that were a true pleasure to behold. Natalie’s interaction with the crowd throughout the night was warm and playful. Tuesday night’s show, at a Springsteen-like 2 hours and 20 minutes long, featured a series of new numbers from a pair of upcoming releases, including original adaptations of children’s poetry, along with the solo career standards.

moe.’s annual New Year’s warm-up gig was an intimate affair at a packed Irving Plaza. The special surprise guest was the (former) Allman Brothers legend Dicky Betts, who guided the band through an epic In Memory of Elizabeth Reed before joining in during Al Schnier’s Allmans-like Mexico.

This recording was made from the perfect location in this venue, and should be better than it is. In December, I sent my Neumann microphones to be serviced, and have used the DPA microphones exclusively. The quality of the two sets is fairly similar, but the Neumann’s have a -10db pad for situations like this concert. The sound in the venue was quite powerful and overwhelmed the DPA > Apogee system. I used the “soft-limiter” to prevent distortion, but during louder moments the sound is still “crunchy”. The problem was significantly reduced during the 2nd set. During quieter passages, particularly in Set 2, this recording is absolutely superb. Enjoy!

Happy New Year
A Happy 2008 to all of our faithful nyctaper readers. We had a great 2007, and hope to continue to bring quality live recordings to our readers, and connect our readers with the wonderful artists we feature. This past year we built some solid cooperative relationships with artists, management, and of course the band’s supporters. We hope to continue to foster these positive relationships and encourage performers and readers to contact us.

Upcoming Recordings
We recorded moe. on December 30, but the recording needs more post-production. We also recorded Pierce Turner on December 9, and that recording needs quite a bit of work (removing audience noise). Both of these recordings will ultimately be featured on this site. We also continue to dip into the ‘archives’ and encourage more archive requests from readers. We intend to honor every request for which we have a recording.

I have a ticket for Springsteen in July at Giants Stadium, and plan on purchasing tickets for the Nassau Coliseum shows this Spring when they become available. I also have a great ticket for Meredith Monk at Symphony Space on February 15, but I am not sure if we will be recording that show. New York Dolls December 29, 2007 – Irving Plaza – Flac Download

The New York Dolls reunion is another one of those unlikely-but-true rock stories with a bittersweet happy ending. The band performed two nights at Irving this week, and while Syl Sylvain and David Johansen look fit and sang and played with focus, its hard to watch this band without realizing that its rhythm section and lead guitarist are no longer with us. The Dolls paid a fine tribute to Johnny Thunders when Syl pointed out Johnny’s daughter in the balcony before the dedication of Johnny’s classic “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory” segued neatly into his Dolls composition “Lonely Planet Boy”. David also dedicated “Private World” to the late bassist Arthur Kane. While the “new” band members are unfamiliar, their instrumental backing was superb. All the classics were performed along with some of the numbers from their excellent new release.

The recording was made from the ideal location at this venue, and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
