We will be celebrating our 10th anniversary on May 11, but there’s no NYCTaper Presents show to go along with that, unfortunately. Meanwhile, we’ll just keep taping and posting shows until this thing runs it course, whenever that might be.

Caveat: Below is the updated schedule. We expect to attend and record these events. However, circumstances will prevent some of these from being done, and others will be added in the meantime. Feel free to make suggestions or point out shows we missed or invite us to your shows!

If psychedelic music aims to be transportive, then Moon Duo’s destination looks something like a Village nightclub featuring the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Sanae Yamada’s synths swirl together with Riply Johnson’s guitar while drummer John Jeffrey plays with motorik precision. Hypnotic visuals play a game of hiding and showing the musicians. Moon Duo play songs for the dark and urban, and naming their recent two-volume album Occult Architecture underscores the time and place of their music. Song titles like “The Death Set,” “Creepin’,” and “Cult of Moloch” tell you this setting shouldn’t be comforting. Capping off the set is a cover of those most-sinister Stooges: “No Fun” gets washed in synth flourishes while Johnson does his best Iggy. The psychedelic sixties are here.

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with the AKG’s set up in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Terry Mattson and Moon Duo’s touring engineer. The sound is spectacular. Enjoy!

Widespread Panic: April 21, 2017 Wanee Festival (Live Oak, FL)

Perennial Southern-rock favorites Widespread Panic have always been better than they had to be. If you go to many festivals that involve like-minded bands, you could be forgiven for getting one bluesy-sounding rock band confused with another. After the deluge of classic rock covers that comes your way, few of these groups really distinguish themselves, but they all get the applause.

Widespread has long been a different animal. Sure, the underlying vein of bluesy-rockness is there, as are some choice covers. But Widespread isn’t just playing the familiar — especially on their best nights, it’s their transcendent playing of both the familiar and their originals that makes them so special. If the Allman Brothers’ “Mountain Jam” or Talking Heads’ “Heaven” is one you’ve heard before, fine, but it’s hard to argue with the Widespread treatment of it, particularly the former. Here at Wanee Festival, Widespread were probably the main draw for a significant portion of the crowd, and they acted like they knew that, playing a finely-honed two-hour set that headed deep into the jam zone during an epic sequence of “The Last Straw”>”Mountain Jam”>”Impossible”>”Big Wooly Mammoth”>”Christmas Katie” and finally “One Kind Favor.” If there’s any upside to the reduced touring of Widespread Panic these days, it’s the fact that it makes each individual show a bit more special.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in a centered “forward of the board” position. If not quite as good sounding as the Trey Anastasio and Bob Weir sets, the sound quality is nonetheless excellent. Enjoy!

Leftover Salmon: April 20, 2017 Wanee Festival, Mushroom Stage (Live Oak, FL)

Much as I have been known to harsh on the classic rock coverin’ ways of jam band festival denizens, it’s hard to argue with Leftover Salmon covering Neil Young songs on 4/20 at Wanee Festival. This set, held on the Mushroom Stage, featured faithful renditions of some of Young’s best and lesser-known songs reinterpreted in the Salmon’s modern bluegrass style. As you’d imagine, some things were a better fit than others, but “Old Man” in particular went off like a champ. “Down by the River” closed things out with guitar wunderkind Marcus King joining, and of course, there was a tribute to this special date in the form of “420 Long Years.” Wanee Festival was just beginning at this point, and Leftover Salmon’s set helped set the tone for the days ahead.

Sebadoh: April 22, 2017 Bell House

In the half-dozen times I’ve seen Sebadoh live, I had never experienced a performance as good as their set at the Bell House last week. The band seemed relaxed and focused and worked through an hour-long set of inspired music. Perhaps buoyed by the fact that in this “co-headline” show they were tasked with playing second of three bands, Sebadoh had a few moments of playful banter, but for the most part were all business.

The set was structured to allow each song protagonist to play a mini-set of their material before a changeover. The show began with five Lou Barlow songs before Jason Loewenstein took over on the guitar at centerstage and played six of his songs, before Lou finished the set with four songs. The band released an album (Defend Yourself) and an EP early this decade after an extended hiatus, but this show was a fair representation of all of their material, newer and classic. This show was the last night of a brief five-city tour after the band played just three dates in 2016. If the Bell House set indicates the high quality of the band’s current performances, we hope that 2017 sees more dates for Sebadoh, particularly locally.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypers mounted at the soundboard rail and mixed with an excellent feed by veteran house FOH Dave. There is one moment of feedback in the first minute, but overall the sound quality of this recording is superb — possibly the best recording we’ve ever made in this venue. Enjoy!

Acid Mothers Temple: April 22, 2017 Knitting Factory

It’s April and that means cosmic travelers Acid Mothers Temple have reappeared in our North American dimension for their yearly psych ritual, this one dubbed the Hallelujah Mystic tour. Kawabata & co. are awfully prolific so for those of us who might have lost track of their recorded freakouts, these outings make for a nice catchup. This set from the Knitting Factory captures some old favorites like “Pink Lady Lemonade” and “Cometary Orbital Drive,” plus a couple more recent additions like the band’s extended takes on Black Sabbath’s “The Wizard” and Gong’s “Flying Teapot.”

I recorded this from our usual location at Knitting Factory, to the right of the soundboard. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!
