Jackie Lynn: April 27, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

On the run from the law and those outside it, Jackie Lynn nevertheless found her way to do some touring behind last year’s self-titled Thrill Jockey record. Jackie’s tale of crime, love, escape, and revenge is painted across eight tracks with synths, electronic drum tracks, twelve-string acoustic guitar, and an unmistakeable voice. The entirety of the album is performed live. Come for the thrills of “Alien Love” and “Franlkin, TN” —stay for Jackie’s catharsis (and redemption?) in “Jackie.”

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with the AKG’s set up in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Terry Mattson. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

NYCTaper is 10 Years Old Today

May 11, 2017
By

Yes, it was ten years ago today that NYCTaper made its first post and began as a live music blog or taper blog or whatever we’ve ultimately become. Its been a tremendous decade for us here and as I literally just paid our server host for another two year registration, we will continue on.

There are of course hundreds of folks who have helped make this experience possible. Thanks as always to our faithful readers, the amazing photographers who permit us to post their work, the venues and FOH engineers that let us record inside their events, and of course the many artists who have graciously permitted us to record their shows.

There is no show to celebrate this anniversary unfortunately, but maybe we’ll even something more important to celebrate soon.

Mind Over Mirrors: May 4, 2017 Union Pool

May 10, 2017
By

Mind Over Mirrors contains multitudes. We’ve seen Jaime Fennelly’s Indian pedal harmonium-based project evolve over the past few years, from a 2015 set at Union Pool with Haley Fohr for The Voice Calling, to a solo set at Littlefield last year, and now a dramatic full-band celebration of the Mirrors’ Paradise of Bachelors debut, Undying Color. Squeezing themselves onto Union Pool’s modestly-sized stage, Fennelly and crew performed a few tracks off Undying Color, vividly recreating the album’s complexity live, while adding an untitled synth piece and the self-explanatory “Gongs.” For the record, that’s Janet Beveridge Bean on drums, gong, and vocals; Jim Becker on violin, vocals, and percussion, and Jon Mueller also on drums and gong. While you may be wondering where Mind Over Mirrors will go next, Fennelly already has an answer for you: this lineup has just announced a two-night performance of a new piece titled “Bellowing Sun” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago for next April. In the meantime, Undying Color is one of the most compelling albums released this year and this live set will make a nice companion to it.

I recorded this from our usual outpost at Union Pool, combined with a board feed courtesy of the venue’s FOH, Doug, and touring engineer, Nick. This represents one of our finest pulls from Union Pool. Enjoy!

Brokeback: May 4, 2017 Union Pool

May 9, 2017
By

It doesn’t take too much digging to trace the cartography of Americana in Brokeback or their new album, Illinois River Valley Blues. For it’s in Illinois that Doug McCombs finds a microcosm of the American west and there the influence of the Spanish countryside. Outside Murphysboro, IL is home to the Little Grand Canyon; meanwhile, “Andalusia, IL,” the song, would clearly have you recall both the south of Spain and its like-named Illinois counterpart. Within the songs, the map gets folded in ways that bring the two Grand Canyons together, that position Andalusia, IL somewhere in the Spanish region. Roads are traced on guitar strings; routes and motifs are circuitous and repeating. Brokeback always take the back roads.

I recorded this from our usual outpost at Union Pool, combined with a board feed courtesy of the venue’s FOH, Doug, and touring engineer, Nick. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Brokeback continue their tour with a Chicago gig later this month and then off to the west coast. Check tour dates via Thrill Jockey.

Moon Duo: April 27, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

May 7, 2017
By

If psychedelic music aims to be transportive, then Moon Duo’s destination looks something like a Village nightclub featuring the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Sanae Yamada’s synths swirl together with Riply Johnson’s guitar while drummer John Jeffrey plays with motorik precision. Hypnotic visuals play a game of hiding and showing the musicians. Moon Duo play songs for the dark and urban, and naming their recent two-volume album Occult Architecture underscores the time and place of their music. Song titles like “The Death Set,” “Creepin’,” and “Cult of Moloch” tell you this setting shouldn’t be comforting. Capping off the set is a cover of those most-sinister Stooges: “No Fun” gets washed in synth flourishes while Johnson does his best Iggy. The psychedelic sixties are here.

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with the AKG’s set up in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Terry Mattson and Moon Duo’s touring engineer. The sound is spectacular. Enjoy!

Moon Duo will be back on May 20th to celebrate Sacred Bones’ 10 Anniversary at Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse.
