Bob Weir & the Campfire Band: April 21, 2017 Wanee Festival (Live Oak, FL)

April 25, 2017
By

If Bob Weir’s set on Saturday of the Wanee Festival had the more emotional coda, I found I enjoyed this Friday set a bit more. First, we got some of the best songs from Bob’s new album, Blue Mountain, which has been hailed as one of his finest in years. Second, there was just something right about the interplay between Bob and the band during this set. If “Lay My Lily Down” from the new record was fresh because, well, it’s new, the classic “China Cat”>”Rider” and “West L.A. Fadeaway” felt like Weir and his band had something to prove, and did. Sure, the Saturday set was longer, and it had the Trey pairing that the Internet cares about, but if you wanted the best of current-day Bob Weir, for my money, this late afternoon set was the pick.

I recorded this set from the same location as the Saturday night recording, more or less, and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Trey Anastasio Band: April 22, 2017 Wanee Music Festival (Live Oak, FL)

April 24, 2017
By

Though veteran Bob Weir closed out this year’s Wanee Festival main stage in fine fashion, it was Trey Anastasio Band who captured the most emotional highlight. Clearly moved by the death of Butch Trucks, with whom he had played on this very Wanee stage in years past, Anastasio and his band took the fired-up crowd through everything from hard boogie numbers like “Cayman Review” to a funky cover of Gorillaz’ “Clint Eastwood” to several of Anastasio’s more downbeat offerings. Whatever the feel of the exact moment, Anastasio and his band owned it, with Trey beaming at the front of the stage for much of the set, just as he was brought to tears recalling his time with Trucks and the Allman Brothers. Perhaps most notable about this set to me personally was the energy and inventiveness of it compared to the lackluster Phish set I saw earlier this year; if the full band interplay wasn’t quite what it is with the main band, the enthusiasm behind it was a night-and-day difference. Perhaps it’s not a surprise; most artists, like most people, care about context and place, and this place brought back memories for Trey that no doubt can’t be replicated in a stadium-type setting. Thanks to this set — which ended on a billowing cover of Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused,” Trey and his band made some Wanee Festival memories for many of us, too.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones FOB with my man Fried Chicken Boy. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Bob Weir & the Campfire Band: April 22, 2017 Wanee Festival (Live Oak, FL)

April 23, 2017

[From the Wanee Festival Facebook Page]

Bob Weir’s closing set at Wanee Festival ended this festival on a note that suited it, combining some crowd-moving Dead songs with more contemplative, comedown fare. If (more than) half the crowd was spent from Trey Anastasio’s ultra-high energy set, Weir brought them back in with a thoughtful acoustic set that began with him solo on “Two Djinn” and “Corinna,” followed by a guest appearance by Anastasio himself. If the more emotional highlights (their duet on Phish’s “Miss You,” a stark “Friend of the Devil”) will be overshadowed by the night’s Internet-ready moment (that’d be the Lady Gaga cover, “A Million Reasons”) that’s OK, too.

Among the electric fare, the second set proved the highlight, with the “Playing In the Band,” “Eyes of the World” and “The Other One” trifecta sealing the deal. But of course, the closing numbers, dedicated to the recently deceased Butch Trucks, were the real highlight, as the crowd carried its positive vibes for Trucks aloft on the mass singalong versions of “Not Fade Away” and then “Ripple.” This set was a bit less about Weir’s latest, quality album, Blue Mountain, than the night before, but we’ll share that night with you as well soon.

If you haven’t been to the Wanee Festival, held in an out of the way state park in a town in north-central Florida called Live Oak, I’d fully recommend it, especially as other festivals in the northeast shut down or turn away from their original missions. The Spirit of Suwanee Music Park is a special space, and for now, those charged with making Wanee what it is are staying true to the park’s spirit.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in an optimal “FOB” situation, with Johnny Fried Chicken boy sharing the space. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Chuck Prophet: March 29, 2017 Bowery Ballroom

neild reports:
Chuck Prophet is one of those musicians who went from barely-known to me to a perennial favorite in the course of a single song — or really a single riff, as all it took was hearing the opening guitar line from “Sonny Liston’s Blues,” off his terrific 2009 album Let Freedom Ring. Prophet gets described frequently as the “indie rock Tom Petty,” and it certainly fits his vocal style and commitment to old-school rock ’n’ roll, but if anything it sells him short: He combines a heart worn boldly on his sleeve with character observations that are by turns astute and hilarious, sometimes in the course of the same phrase.

This show at the Bowery Ballroom came toward the end of the tour for Prophet’s excellent new album Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins. Live, not only is Prophet’s dry wit given free rein, but the Mission Express, consisting of guitar wizard James DePrato (here playing even more slide than usual), the superb rhythm section of bassist Kevin White and drummer Vicente Rodriguez, and the unbeatable keyboardist/vocalist (and Prophet’s wife) Stephanie Finch, can spread out songs like “Summertime Thing” and “You Did (Bomp Shooby Dooby Bomp)” into loping jams that would be rock radio staples in an alternate universe. I’ve never seen a bad Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express show, and this was among their best, charging along without letup for nearly two hours.

This recording was made with Church Audio CA-14 cardioid mics from lip of the Bowery Ballroom balcony, mixed with a soundboard feed provided by the Bowery’s supremely talented and helpful new soundperson Danielle.

Please pay what you wish for the download (all proceeds other than Paypal and Bandcamp fees go to the artist), and visit chuckprophet.com for all your merch and info needs — I highly recommend subscribing to his email newsletter, which is always a terrific read even if you’re not interested in finding out when he’s coming to your town (though if you’re not, I don’t know what’s wrong with you).

Son Volt: April 7, 2017 Bowery Ballroom

Son Volt is currently on tour in support of their new album Notes of Blue, the band’s ninth record in more than twenty years of work. Despite the early years as torch-carriers for the alt-country/No Depression movement, Son Volt has built a career on solid roots/Americana rock. Like band leader Jay Farrar, there’s nothing particularly flashy about the group, they’re just built on a consistent foundation of high quality music. The new album continues in that vein, if not a tad bit more focused on the “roots” sound more representative of the Son Volt’s recent output.

The Son Volt tour came through NYC last week for a few local dates, and we were fortunate to attend the Bowery Ballroom show which sold out months ago. Like the band, the fans of this band are consistent and faithful — members of our group for the Bowery night came from Ireland, Boston and Missouri to see this show. And the band did not disappoint. After the early set concentrated heavily on Blue material, Son Volt delivered a twenty-six song show with a setlist pulled democratically from all eras of the band. Indeed there were three Uncle Tupelo songs in the encore set, and the night ended with Keith Richards penned Stones cover. Son Volt will be on tour throughout the next two months mostly in the West and Midwest, dates here.

I recorded this set with room mics only, running the Schoeps from our traditional spot in the front center of the balcony. The sound quality reflects the show experience — excellent quality sound supplemented by some feisty fans. Enjoy!

I could yap a bunch about Big Ups and how great they are, but I’ve done that before and you already know. Okay just one thing: this is one of the best of a bunch of Big Ups shows I’ve seen, so it’s more than worth checking out. While you’re listening you can pick up Before a Million Universes from Exploding in Sound, still available on orange vinyl for you collector scum.

Like the Pile set from the same night, we recorded this set from the stage lip combined with a board feed from Sunnyvale’s engineer Dave. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!
