Alan Licht: August 2, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

There are any number of ways that a fan of the New York underground scene might have run across the guitarist Alan Licht. Along with an extensive discography of his own, Licht has also played a key role in several bands, including the Blue Humans, Love Child, and Run On. Most recently, Licht has appeared as a member of Lee Ranaldo and the Dust. Now, he’s readying a new solo album, which he was kind enough to share a majority of with this group of fans at Union Pool. Compared to some of Licht’s more drone and minimalist work, these compositions, like leadoff track “Riding On the S’s” and “Raw Deal” in particular, show the influence of the recent work with Ranaldo. They have an urgent, narrative feel to them, to the point that you almost feel compelled to throw your own lyrics into them at points. This was the songs’ first exposure to a public audience, and it seems likely that they’ll see some further evolution before the final versions are laid down on the record (one of them, after all, still lacks a title). But even in these raw, new forms, Licht showed a clear vision for and command of them, leading me to believe that new record is going to be a must-have.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from engineer Kevin Mazzarelli, combined with Schoeps MK41V microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Thanks to Jeff Conklin for arranging the show and permission to record Alan’s set.

Warren Haynes may love playing music more than anyone. How else can you explain his innumerable appearances on the summer festival circuit, from his own Mountain Jam, to others such as Gathering of the Vibes, where once again he played two lengthy sets in one day? This one, with Railroad Earth as his backing band, showed off some of Warren’s solo material, which is of a piece with his Gov’t Mule work — blues-inflected rock with an eye toward tradition, freshened for the modern audience. Also in line with Warren’s Mule sets, after kicking off with his own songs like “Company Man,” Warren and RRE headed into cover territory, firing off Grateful Dead’s “China Doll” (joined by Bill Kreutzmann) and Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman,” among others. As always, nobody was having a better time than Warren, who shredded through the songs with a vigor that would impress someone half his age. I can’t imagine a music festival without him.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the official taper’s section. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Chuck Johnson: August 2, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Chuck Johnson has soared in recent years, with three landmark solo guitar LPs this decade alone. The latest, Blood Moon Boulder, continues the corvid-based theme of 2013’s Crows In the Basilica, and has been hailed in some quarters as his finest achievement yet. It’s hard to argue with that analysis watching Chuck perform on a recent Sunday night at Union Pool to a dedicated crew of serious music fans, who huddled around Chuck as he played both lap acoustic and stand-up electric pieces. As is sometimes pointed out, Johnson is a latecomer to solo guitar, having spent much of his 90s career in bands in Chapel Hill, NC (including Shark Quest, Idyll Swords, and Spatula). You wouldn’t know it from the calculated virtuosity of his three records, evident in his mastery of the slide guitar on “Corvid Tactics.” Crows are a clever, calculating bird, able to adapt and learn over time. Their ability for forethought sets them apart — something that might also be said of Johnson, whose pieces have a habit of leading to unexpected places, shifting gears in ways non-obvious but utterly rewarding. As a special treat, Johnson played an untitled new number mid-set, before playing a favorite melody of “A Slender Thread” into “Dissevered” to close things out. Do yourself a favor and check out Blood Moon Boulder as well as Chuck’s previous releases — the live recording is no more than a taste of how good he can sound.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Kevin Mazzarelli, together with Schoeps MK41V microphones to provide a bit of ambiance. Some noise reduction was used to eliminate DI buzz, and there are a few short bursts of cell phone interference. Overall, however, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The Connecticut band Deep Banana Blackout has been, not surprisingly, a fixture at their local Gathering of the Vibes Festival for years now, and their NOLA-style funk always inspires the local crowd. About the only clue you got from this set that it was the band’s 20th anniversary of their founding was how on point they were, maintaining a tight, dance-worthy groove against the stifling midday heat. Though truncated by the festival format, this set had at least one element that was likely a first for a DBB set — a wedding proposal, delivered by a fan right after “Hear My Song.” It was the kind of crowd-pleasing, heartfelt moment that gives you a clue why the band, like this festival they are so emblematic of, has endured and thrived.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones from the official taper’s section. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Greensky Bluegrass: August 1, 2015 Gathering of the Vibes (Bridgeport, CT) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We caught back up with Michigan band Greensky Bluegrass, seen by us most recently at the Gramercy Theatre last year, during the peak heat on this past Saturday at Gathering of the Vibes. The band’s updated bluegrass sound made for a perfect backdrop to the sunny weather, as they mellowed things down with their approachable tunes and good, well, vibes. This being a festival set, we were treated to an hour’s worth of some of the band’s key material, much of it culled from their most recent effort If Sorrows Swim. Back at the Gramercy the band busted out a Prince cover; today found them in a similar mid-’80s frame of mind cover-wise, as they pulled out Dire Straits’ 1985 classic, “Money For Nothing.” MTV barely even exists anymore, but even the younger segments of the Vibe Tribe still seemed to get it. This was Greensky’s first Gathering of the Vibes, and based on the crowd’s response, I suspect they’ll be back.

I recorded this set with four Schoeps microphones, combining a pair of MK4V cardiods with MK5s in the omnidirectional pattern to give the recording added presence. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Wilco: August 1, 2015 Gathering of the Vibes (Bridgeport, CT) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Wilco has wowed this summer in a few ways — first with their exceptional Solid Sound acoustic performance (which we captured here), then with the surprise free release of Star Wars, easily their finest album in ten years. Here at Gathering of the Vibes on the Bridgeport seaside, the band built on the momentum they created with their full-album performance of Star Wars back at Pitchfork Music Festival with another full-album run through, followed by some of the band’s best-known songs as well as the rarity “Laminated Cat.” As a special treat, Warren Haynes, he of every single guest appearance at northeastern jam festivals, joined for “California Stars” along with Joe Russo to close things out. But lest you think this was a standard-issue performance, Jeff Tweedy and co., buoyed by the presence of Nels Cline, turned even the older tunes into noisier, edgier renditions than we’ve seen recently, perhaps alienating some of this festival’s core audience, but proving that Wilco is returning to what made Yankee Hotel Foxtrot their true landmark album, and what marks them as so much bigger than being the “dad rock” of their detractors. Star Wars has proven that this band has many more good years ahead, and we’ll be thrilled to be a part of them.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the taper’s section. While distance and being outdoors always impact sound quality, overall this is an excellent effort. Enjoy!

Zachary Cale: July 16, 2015 The Living Room – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

July 28, 2015
By

IMG_2560

Zachary Cale has been called a “musician’s musician,” in part because he seems to be friends with just about everybody, but more importantly because he exudes a music-first mentality that prioritizes creation over every other aspect of what’s so-often called the “music business.” To wit, he’s released his past four records, including the higher-profile Blue Rider in 2013, on his own label, All Hands Electric, and his output has been strikingly consistent throughout. His work rolls out of him, sounding as effortless as it surely isn’t. Reviews of Blue Rider pointed out that that finger-picked guitar you hear that sounds like three people working. Well, that’s just him. Zach’s stage persona is humble; his abilities are not.

This show at the Living Room previewed an exciting turn for Cale’s recorded output, as his forthcoming Duskland will be his first for Brooklyn-based No Quarter, a label that has a diverse roster but has shown, of late, a penchant for great singer-songwriters (e.g., Doug Paisley, Joan Shelley, Jennifer Castle). Five of the seven tracks on offer here come from the new album, plus the brand-new “Riverbed” and “Hangman Letters” from Blue Rider. The new album proves to be something to look forward to — it’s of a piece with Blue Rider stylistically but with a more melancholic tone that befits the “dusk” in the title. Cale hails from Louisiana, but this work feels closer to the empty parts of Texas most times, the kind of songs that belong under an open sky, particularly the windswept, propulsive “Evensong.” The country-tinged trifecta of “I Forged the Bullet,” “Sundowner,” and “Changing Horses” made for a fine set closer. Cale may not have “changed horses” with the move to No Quarter, but he has put himself in the best position to succeed, alongside like-minded artists he belongs with. Make sure to get ahold of Duskland on pre-order, or when it hits stores on August 7.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Living Room engineer Kevin and Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Eidetic Seeing: July 9, 2015 The Acheron – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

July 24, 2015
By

IMG_2446

Eidetic Seeing have been a fixture in the Brooklyn underground for a few years now, on the strength of two excellent full-lengths. It’s been a stretch since the band’s most recent, 2014’s Against Nature, so it’s not surprising that this set at The Acheron in “East Williamsburg” featured three new songs to go with a tease of Against Nature’s “K2.” This band succeeds by focusing on the strength of the interplay among the members, which is led by Sean Forleza’s intricate guitar work. If you see the places where they play — Acheron is basically a miniature St. Vitus (a compliment if there ever was one) — Eidetic Seeing seem comfortable in the company of heavy bands, but what they’re doing is much more than “stoner metal” or “psych rock” or whatever tag you want to affix to it. This set was perhaps the most entertaining yet of those we have covered for the site, as Forleza, Danilo Randjic-Coleman, and drummer Paul Feitzinger melded these songs into a single piece whose dynamism couldn’t be denied. We hope to hear these songs and more new material from the band soon!

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in front of the soundboard, with a light amount of soundboard feed to augment the vocals. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Elephant Micah: July 16, 2015 The Living Room – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

July 22, 2015
By

elephantmicah

Elephant Micah, aka Joseph O’Connell, is one of several welcome transplants to the North Carolina music scene over the past few years. The formerly Indiana-based songwriter has flourished of late, releasing his well-received Where In Our Woods in 2015. While O’Connell has put out a slew of material over his 14-year career, many of those offerings (save Woods and 2012’s Louder Than Thou, in particular) have been of the more DIY variety, meaning many listeners still aren’t as acquainted with him as they should be. So here’s some quick catch-up: O’Connell released a 7-inch with Hiss Golden Messenger in 2012, and spent some time touring with Magnolia Electric Co. before that. Those artists should be an indication of his quality; he belongs in that company. His songwriting brings to bear a formidable understanding of American folkloric tradition and the chops to translate it to modern ears, while his voice reminds me a bit of Richard Buckner in its tone and emotional reach. These features suited this particular performance especially well.

The Living Room moved from the Lower East Side to Williamsburg recently, and this well-appointed, professionally-run venue suits the 2015 version of this neighborhood. With the move came a bold expansion of the space that, critically, did not diminish its original purpose. There’s now a large roof deck with DJs, and a well-appointed front bar, but there remains a dedicated, quiet, great-sounding music space in the back. It was here that Elephant Micah (as a full band) laid down a set that was, in his own words, reflective of “doing a lot of podcasts.” In his mind, that seems to have meant a darker tone, as the band played just one solitary Where In Our Woods song (“Albino Animals”) amidst a fascinating set of older material and traditional folk. The traditional numbers won the day here, particularly the scorching “The Ballad of the Lawson Family,” whose mournful lyrics gave way to a crescendo of electric noise. This was every bit a freeform set, off-the-cuff and true to the traditions that O’Connell does proud. If you haven’t experienced O’Connell’s fine work yet, start with Where In Our Woods, then work back to the recorded roots of these songs. You can see where this artist has been, and how he has grown. Then listen to this set again, and realize the beauty of him putting it all together. If you haven’t been, start paying attention.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Living Room FOH Kevin, together with Schoeps MK41V microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Mates of State: July 10, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

July 15, 2015
By

IMG_2521

Mates of State have been at this since 1997 — an eternity in music career terms, even more so when you consider how au courant their synthpop sound remains in 2015. Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel being married themselves, it’s no surprise that they’re an inspiration to their fellow couples, who comprised most of this Friday-night crowd at Bowery Ballroom. The band’s euphoric sound made a good match for the summer night, as they sailed around their catalog. The set hit its stride about three songs in, with “Staring Contest” from the newly-released You’re Going to Make It EP. After that, things didn’t slow down as the pair demonstrated why they’ve remained relevant for this long. If this live show didn’t quite have the polish of their albums, where the dual-sung verses can be synced and tone-aligned after the fact, it burst with the natural exuberance of the style and setting. Gardner and Hammer didn’t take many pauses as they ripped off this 19-song, 77-minute set rapid fire. My favorite of the numbers was probably “Get Better” from 2008’s Re-Arrange Us. The tempered hope of its conclusion (“Everything’s gonna get lighter / even if it never gets better”) is good advice for anyone.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from longtime Bowery engineer Kenny and Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
