The second of Mission of Burma’s two nights at Bowery was covered for nyctaper by Acidjack. Our recording of the first night is [here].

“I have to admit that this was my first time seeing Mission of Burma, which is one of those concert-going omissions that I should be embarrassed about. My first experience, with them playing a second night to a packed Bowery Ballroom, was a great one. It is truly an honor to see bands continue to produce at such a high level during the second phase of their careers. Unlike some bands whose raison d’etre for their career revivals seems to have more to do with credit card and mortgage balances than artistic vitality (I’ll avoid naming names), Mission of Burma prove that they still have something to say. The sound, thanks to the excellent work of master production wizard Bob Weston and the Bowery sound team, was excellent, and this recording, from the same spot as last night’s show with similar equipment, reflects that. Ted Leo: December 6, 2009 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads

“Ted Leo & the Pharmacists came out to play on a cold Sunday night, sort of for no reason. They aren’t on tour, and they don’t have a new album out (as they pointed out). Luckily, nobody told them this might not be a proposition for a packed house. In fact, Bowery was sold out and very, very full with the type of fans that make Sunday night shows among my favorites. Much like the Dirty Projectors’ Sunday night tour closer at Bowery that we featured on the site earlier this week, this show brought out fans who came to enjoy the music, knew the songs, and showed the band enthusiasm, friendliness and respect. Leo and the band returned the favor, giving an approximately 90 minute set (comprising, as you will see, a ton of songs, 23 to be exact) that never sagged. The band debuted a number of new (and “new new”) songs as well as older classics and covers. Leo proves that three-chord punk music doesn’t have to be stupid or lo-fi — his stage banter and lyrics are witty and intelligent, and his guitar tuning breaks (due to the last minute substitution of a finicky guitar) this night were frequent. Younger bands take note: Sometimes, giving something more than a sloppily-tuned 40 minute set – even when your songs are all in the 3-4 minute range – can be pretty cool.

I recorded this set from a pole clamped to the left side of the soundboard cage, with the mics about 8′ from the floor with the DPA 4021s. The sound quality is excellent.

Dirty Projectors: November 22, 2009 Bowery – Flac and MP3 Downloads

“The Dirty Projectors are the band you’d get if some Ivy League music majors decided to convert their acappella group into a rock band. Or perhaps, they are, almost, the band we *did* get. If you don’t own Bitte Orca, their excellent album from this year, go out and buy it now, before you don’t own the album that will top all of this year’s “best of” lists.

Experiencing this band live, it is even more striking just how *musical* this band is. Quite frankly, I lack the music theory vocabulary to explain what it is they’re doing up there, but the complexity in their compositions – from the vocal harmonies to the song structures – is evident to even the untutored ear. This night, closing out an almost weeklong run in their home town, saw the Projectors in fine form, playing a nearly 90 minute set (including an acoustic set) that closed out with special guest star David Byrne, as well as an appearance by The Roots. Not since Kid A has a band moved rock music this far forward this quickly, and, like Kid A, challenged the most basic notions about what “rock” music is – and could be.

I recorded this set in the center with my new DPA 4021s. Thanks to the combination of the band’s extremely talented sound engineers, the respectful crowd, and the top-flight equipment, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!”

The Dinosaur Jr. set opening for Sonic Youth last week at Terminal 5 was a condensed version of the band’s current show. After opening with a few classic nuggets, the band then performed several songs from the excellent new album Farm, before closing with “Freak Scene” and another early-era shredder, in this case “Gargoyle”. We expect the set to be fleshed out for the two shows that Dinosaur Jr. will play in NYC next month — January 16 at Bowery Ballroom and January 17 at Music Hall of Williamsburg (we’ll be there).

Acidjack recorded this set from the same location at the Sonic Youth recording and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Titus Andronicus: November 5, 2009 Masonic Temple – Flac and MP3 Downloads

As the opening band at F*cked Up’s performance of The Chemistry of Common Life, Titus Andronicus performed their first set of Titus material since in the infamous appearance at the Vice Magazine Halloween Party.

Radio Flyer reviewed their set:

Fitting with their slightly cleaned-up appearance, Titus Andronicus have polished up their sound. Don’t think that takes off the edge, though. They are loud and fast and make me want to move to Ireland and go to a pub with people I will come to call “the lads” every night just so that we can stumble home shouting drunken renditions of every Titus Andronicus song we know. But Titus Andronicus has always been a technically sophisticated band and now their guitar-work can really shine. They’ve rearranged their songs to include some enormous, glittering walls of sound, some stunning embellishing riffs and some crazy, crazy noise. They are more loud and cool and fun than ever.

Acidjack recorded this set with a mobile rig from the middle of the floor of this venue of subpar sound. The recording is raw and somewhat boomy, but it sounds like it was — a punk show. Enjoy!

Built to Spill: October 13, 2009 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The second night of Built to Spill at Webster Hall was a show for the old-timers. Opening the set with “Nowhere Nothing FU” from their 1993 debut album, BTS proceeded to play a set that drew heavily from their two masterpieces — 1997’s Perfect from Now On and 1999’s Keep It Like a Secret. The set’s highlight was another 1990’s gem, the Halo Benders “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain”.

Acidjack recorded this set from a completely different vantage point from the first night, as he chose to go onto the center of the floor with a mobile rig. The result is an excellent recording of great energy and clarity with more audience participation than the previous evening. Enjoy!

Both nights of BTS at the Music Hall of Williamsburg were recorded and will be posted in the coming days.

Built to Spill: October 12, 2009 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

In the opening night of their four-show run in NYC, Built to Spill proved again why they are one of the most compelling bands of the last decade and a half. Opening with a short but relaxed tuning jam that led into “Into Your Mind”, the band worked through a setlist evenly dispersed between old classics (“The Plan”, “Sidewalk”, “Carry The Zero”) with a handful of songs from the excellent new album There Is No Enemy. Built to Spill continues to sound as fresh as they did when we first saw them at Tramps in 1996 — Doug Martsch seems completely at ease with his oeuvre and if the new release is any indication, he has no plan to cease the quality output. With three more nights in NYC, we expect to celebrate that fact.

Acidjack recorded this set from an outstanding location at this venue — with a microphone clamp on the center balcony. The result is a recording of outstanding clarity and presence. Enjoy!

The Decemberists “lottery” show at Terminal 5 was nearly three weeks ago. Since its taken us quite a while to turn around this recording (more below), rather than review the show we suggest our readers read the following excellent coverage of this unique show from various sources: rockscope, Will You Miss Me When You’re Gone, and brooklynvegan.

The story of this recording involves a lot of frustration and a ton of work which has ultimately led to something we’re proud to offer our readers. Acidjack captured a fine recording of excellent clarity and depth which was marred by one major problem — an apparent ADHD case who spent much of the show rattling and drumming on the railing that held the microphones. The result on the raw wav file was a persistent unlistenable series of tapping noises. I spent hours trying to fix it, but ultimately gave up. Acidjack however, was not to be denied. He took the job and persisted — ultimately producing a recording that is not only quite excellent, but very listenable through even the “drumming” segments. To compare the raw files to the finished product is almost unbelieveable. Enjoy!

Tortoise: July 21, 2009 Le Poisson Rouge – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Post-rock pioneers Tortoise are back with a vengeance. Their June 2009 release Beacons of Ancestorship is easily their most powerful album since 2001’s Standard. The recent reports from the 2009 shows have been glowing, and on Tuesday night at Le Poisson Rouge, those reports were confirmed and more. Tortoise performed a stunning seventeen songs, including an unheard-of two encore segments of five total songs. The set consisted primarily of Beacons material with a nice selection of older material towards the end of the set.

We seriously acknowledge the continued excellence of Le Poisson Rouge as a venue. Their diverse and eclectic artist bookings continue to impress, and their sound system has continued to improve in quality. Additionally, the venue has been incredibly nice and cooperative to the nyctaper site in many ways, including permitting Acidjack to enter the venue early for this show to set up. The result is perhaps his finest recorded contribution to this site, a recording of outstanding balance and clarity with a remarkable bass response. Thanks again to all involved in the production of this superb listen. Enjoy!

Mogwai: April 29, 2009 Music Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

A review of a Mogwai concert uses many of the same adjectives as one might use to describe a Sigur Ros show — intense, majestic, orchestral, etc. But the fact remains that Mogwai are superb musicians who create songs of transformation that entrance and captivate the listener. At Music Hall on Wednesday night, Mogwai completed their three-show run with a flawless performance, and the strongest set of the three nights. This night was highlighted by the lengthy encore segment containing three songs, that included the classic “Mogwai Fear Satan”.

Acidjack recorded this set from the prime location in this venue, and captured a recording of exceptional clairity and balance. Enjoy!
