Cass McCombs new album Big Wheel and Others is a real departure from his recent work. In 2011, he released both Wit’s End and Humor Risk and both albums owed much to the influence of the more sleepy Laurel Canyon music school. The shows in support of those albums were compellingly mellow and in particular the Bowery show in 2011 was one of the best shows we saw all that year. But Big Wheel is anything but sleepy — its pretty much a straight rock album and an ambitious double album at that. The tour in support of the album has been a lengthy cross-country trip that arrived at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday night. Cass’s band is a quartet of individual renowned in their own right, with the drums manned by Joe Russo, whose name has popped up often on this site in 2013. Dan Iead from the late great powerpop band The Broken West played both lead guitar and pedal steal, with versatile ~~Portlander~~ Jon Shaw ~~(Battle Hymns and Gardens, Ez Weiss Quartet)~~ (correction, thanks to comment: “Wolf!, Shpongle, Nicole Atkins, The Broken West, The Complete Last Waltz, etc”) on bass. The strength of the band was obvious from the start, as the album opener led off the set with a burst of energy. We’re streaming that track below. The balance of the set was a nice mix of material young and old — there were just six of the nineteen Big Wheel songs along with a democratic selection from each of Cass’s prior records. The Cass McCombs US tour is over, but he’ll be in Europe for six weeks in January and February.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser Cards mounted at our usual spot in the center balcony. The room mix was quite superb with kudos to Cass’s tour FOH Chris Preston. We mixed in a very conservative amount of board feed to supplement the room mics and the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

The Sheffield, UK band 65daysofstatic are among the leading lights of Great Britain’s post-rock movement. Almost thirteen years after their formation and ten after their debut EP, Stumble.Stop.Repeat, the band showed this crowd at Bowery Ballroom why they’ve endured. Even going back to their first album, The Fall of Math, 65daysofstatic were ahead of the times, adding glitchy electronic noises over the top of their cinematic compositions. The band strikes me as less guitar-driven than many of their peers generally; the cresting waves of guitar are still very much there, but they feel more of a component to the sound rather than the band’s reason for being. Consider, for example, “Prism”, the band’s latest single, from their 2013 album Wild Light, or the piano-driven “Taipei”. Most of this set was drawn from Wild Light, but we also got a taste of the band’s earlier material, such as a sweeping version of The Fall of Math’s “Install A Beak In the Heart that Clucks Time in Arabic”. Considering that the band chose a New York live set for their 2009 live record Escape From New York, I can’t say I was surprised by the outpouring of love from this crowd, who treated 65daysofstatic as enthusiastically as the headliner, Caspian (that recording here).

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a flawless soundboard feed from the house engineer, Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

If you had told me back in 1997, when bands like Mogwai first hit the scene in the U.S., that heavy instrumental post-rock would one day be a somewhat popular genre, I’m not sure I’d have believed you. Sure, some of the credit goes to TV and movie soundtracks, but mainly, this genre’s emergence is the results of relentless touring and high-quality output of its practitioners. Boston’s Caspian, part of what could be called the second wave of the scene, and masters of the style, are a great example. I first saw them deliver their relentless, dynamic show at the relatively tiny Studio at Webster Hall back in 2010. Now, an album and a couple EPs later, they can pack them in at Bowery Ballroom on a freezing Sunday night. For progressive music, progress.

Caspian practice the same soft-loud dynamic as many of their contemporaries, but what struck me about this show was how heavily this band emphasizes the loud part of that. The whole room shook with the sound of songs like the band’s classic “Moksha”, with its epic sweep, or “Ghosts of the Garden City” from the album Tertia. From the band’s latest EP, Hymn for the Greatest Generation, we got “Halls of the Summer”, a forward-looking track that shows the band is keeping up with current trends by incorporating subtle-yet-effective electronics.

This has been a hard year for the band, having lost bassist Chris Friedrich unexpectedly earlier in the year. The band’s attitude has been to celebrate Chris’ legacy by moving onward and forward with their music. This show, and the huge reception by the fans, shows that it’s working. We hope to see Caspian’s upward trajectory continue.

Sebadoh: November 1, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

You don’t have to violate Lou Barlow’s privacy (the way some people did) to figure out the inspiration for Sebadoh‘s first record in 14 years, Defend Yourself. The details are right there in the lyrics, laid bare and sharply observed for all to see. It’s a deeply personal work, the new record. And also, it’s a new Sebadoh record. While the band did some “reunion” shows over the past few years — including an outstanding Maxwell’s show we saw back in 2011 — it is a treat to see current members Barlow, Jason Loewenstein and Bob D’Amico back on the road with new songs in their arsenal, looking forward rather than looking back. Their new tour for Defend Yourself began this Friday night at Bowery Ballroom, where a sold-out crowd sent them off on their mini-tour of the East Coast, Canada and Midwest.

After a measured start (where much tuning was promised), this sprawling hour-and-a-half-plus set delivered over and over, from the a cappella opening bars of “I Will” from Defend Yourself to “Freed Pig” from III. If Defend Yourself has a bit of a glossier sheen compared to the band’s lo-fi beginnings (or even Harmacy), on the stage that’s all stripped away. New songs like “State of Mine” (streaming below) integrated perfectly with old favorites like “Soul and Fire” and “Forced Love”. As more of their contemporaries come out of retirement to play the hits, it was a good and right thing to see Sebadoh prove they have juice to carry them into the future. If anything, Sebadoh have reached that glorious, comfortable place where they can afford to keep it loose, where the know the fans actually want to be there for 100 minutes’ worth of twenty-six songs that they’ll give their full attention. At this point it’s not just about whether there is another sold-out show or getting good reviews. This band has their fan base, and they keep earning their good graces. At this point, they can enjoy the beauty of the ride, and we can hope it continues.

I couldn’t make the Friday night Superchunk show, as I was attending The Suburbs at Mercury (recording very soon). But fortunately, intrepid correspondent neild was there for the capture. Neil reports:

“First things first: Not to contradict our fearless leader, but Superchunk didn’t technically go on hiatus after 2001’s Here’s to Shutting Up. There were occasional shows and EPs here and there, whenever Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance could take time away from their main gig running Merge Records. But the band’s masterful 2010 CD Majesty Shredding still deserves to be ranked with the most impressive comeback albums of all time, featuring instant classics like “Digging For Something” and “Learned to Surf” that melded the band’s guitar crunch with McCaughan’s pop hookery more deftly than ever before. And this year’s I Hate Music (spoiler alert: they don’t actually) is more of the same – or rather, another step forward in the same direction, stretching the band’s boundaries while still staying true to its strengths in rocking out.

This show was the first of two nights at the Bowery Ballroom (the second is available here), and the sold-out crowd was not disappointed: From the opening clap-along bars of “This Summer” (a throwaway single release from last year that might just be their catchiest tune ever), the band was in fine form, with McCaughan bouncing around the stage for almost the entire hour and a half of music. (As my spouse, a Superchunk first-timer, remarked with understatement, “Mac sure has a lot of energy.”) With Ballance sidelined by ear problems, drummer Jon Wurster’s Bob Mould band mate Jason Narducy subbed in as a replacement, and was an excellent fit both on bass and on backing vocals. The setlist featured a spate of songs from I Hate Music, plus a selection from the band’s catalog that managed to be almost entirely different from the next night’s set; “Skip Steps 1 and 3,” “Hyper Enough,” “Rope Light,” and “Driveway to Driveway” (streaming below) were among the highlights here that didn’t reappear on Saturday.

I recorded this from the Bowery’s left balcony, which made for reduced crowd noise and a nice direct sound from the left speaker stack. It was recorded with two sets of mics, Core Sound Binaurals and Church Audio CA-14 cardioids, which were later mixed to provide optimum depth and presence.

Do not sell this under any circumstances, buy all of Superchunk’s records if you don’t have them already (did you get their 2008 EP Leaves In The Gutter? you probably believed that “hiatus” thing and missed it, didn’t you?), and by all means, do yourself a favor and go see them live when they come to your town.

I don’t believe its quite accurate to say that Superchunk is the best working band in America today, but you’d be hard pressed to name one that’s actually better. For more than two decades, minus a few years hiatus, Superchunk has consistently released high quality albums filled with excellent songs. There’s not a clunker among any of their ten studio albums — heck, there isn’t even a bad song in their catalog. The newest release came out last month, and I Hate Music not only continues the streak, but its one of the strongest albums in their history. The band is currently on tour in support of the album and performed two shows at Bowery Ballroom this weekend, and we were there for Saturday’s barnburner. Superchunk opened the show on high octane, working through a democratic mix of songs from the new album interspersed with the classics in an hour-long set that barely came up for air. And the very-sold out crowd was with them throughout. From our standard balcony perch we could see the craziness on the floor, but the manic crowd response even spread to the balcony itself, where we witnessed enough pogoing to shake the floor of the upper deck. But it was in the ten song encore segment where all hell broke loose. The band welcomed out Merge recording artist Eleanor Friedberger for two legendary punk covers (we’re streaming the Patti Smith one below) and then just continued to play a series of their own deep tracks in maniacal fashion. The show reached its climax when Mac laid down his guitar, took over behind the kit and drummer Jon Wurster came out to deliver a couple of hardcore covers to end the night.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mixed with an excellent board feed. There is a couple of minutes of static near the very end of the set caused by a problematic mic on the snare drum, but otherwise this is a superb capture. Enjoy!

We will also have a recording of the first night of Superchunk’s Bowery shows. That recording should be available by the end of the week.

Ty Segall: August 30, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Ty Segall has had an impressive and prolific recording career thus far. The 26 year-old performer has released 8 solo albums, has been a member of four bands with recorded output, has done duo records with Mikal Cronin and with White Fence, and earlier this year released an album with Fuzz. But what Ty has done with his latest album Sleeper (Drag City) may be his most accomplished feat thus far. The album is lyrically his most personal and the primarily acoustic instrumentation is a great departure from his lo-fi garage roots. But its not the style change that is so remarkable, its the fact that Segall not only pulls off the tidal shift with such ease but that the album is so strong. And the tour band continues the theme. At Friday night’s Bowery Ballroom show, Ty’s band was a seated-foursome with two acoustic guitars, bass and drums, a far cry from the rabid punk show we saw just this past February at Webster Hall. It was clear from the outset that this was a different performer playing material with a very different vibe. But Ty’s talents seated were just as impressive as when he is standing — it was the quality and intensity of the music that kept the crowd craziness at bay as Ty and the band worked though Sleeper nearly in its entirety. We are streaming the second song and second track on the album “The Keepers”, a song the band played to perfection. It was midway through the show when the new material was complete that the show switched gears, gained some volume and the pit went wild. The band worked through some older Ty tracks before ending the set proper. We’re also streaming “Ghost” from the set of older material as it features an intense and extended guitar jam. The highlight of the encore set was Ty’s solo performance of the Bowie classic “Moonage Daydream”. While we don’t expect that Ty Segall will ever turn away from his garage roots, its very encouraging to know that this multi-talented performer is just as comfortable as a singer-songwriter than as a punk impresario. This Bowery show was that good.

Alex Bleeker & The Freaks: July 27, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I know I’ve thrown around the term “indie rock jam-band” before. But it’s hard to find a more appropriate label for Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, who used their three quarters of an hour opening for fellow Brooklynites Woods at Bowery Ballroom to play more than a few songs that hearkened to an earlier era in tone and in their ability to flow seamlessly from one to the other. Bleeker, who also serves as bassist in Real Estate, had a birthday on this night, and he treated himself by playing songs that I suspect reminded him of home. You knew this set was going to be right when the band led off with the Grateful Dead’s “Let the Good Times Roll” and went from there into a mix of songs from the band’s latest record and fun-loving covers that did exactly what the first one promised.

If you listen to their new record, How Far Away, you’d be forgiven for the cheap comparison that Bleeker & the Freaks sound almost like a hybrid of Woods and Real Estate at points, with some of the former band’s lo-fi style blending with Real Estate’s easygoing sound. That’s no more in evidence than on “Home I Love”, which made for one of this show’s most compact bursts of good feeling. That led into a superjam of sorts, with three more numbers from the album, with “See You On Sunday” jamming into “Steve’s Theme” and then “Rhythm Shakers” before the band switched gears into Katrina and the Waves’ all-time classic “Walking On Sunshine”. After “Step Right Up (Pour Yourself Some Wine)”, Bleeker toasted his birthday in grand style with their song “Epilogue” teasing Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” into the set closer, Brewer & Shipley’s “One Toke Over the Line”. A happy birthday, indeed.

As Woods played in front of a fantasia of psychedelic swirls provided by Drippy Eye Projections, I thought back to another of many memorable Woods shows I’ve been to, where they played Abrons Arts Center with the Joshua Light Show, which these projections most resembled. Or there was the time they played St. Cecilia’s Church during the 2011 Northside Festival. Or the first couple times I saw them, in both cases opening for bands they are much bigger than now and whose careers they have outlasted, and thought, wow, these guys are really different. And they’re great.

Like all bands with staying power, Woods have continued to evolve without abandoning the core elements of their sound — Jeremy Earl’s nasal, high pitched voice, the ramshackle folk, the not-quite-retro psychedelia. What has evolved into a very different beast is the band’s now-huge guitar sound, which barely resembles their earlier records and has turned them into a sonic juggernaut live. When the one minute, fifty four second song “I Was Gone” becomes a fourteen-minute behemoth of a jam now, the reaction isn’t being surprised or impressed that they’re trying it — it’s paying attention to what will be good about this version of the song. A Woods set, which rarely runs far past an hour, has become like a controlled dose of Grateful Dead. Every minute is worth watching, and the “jam songs” are ones you feel compelled to debate the best one of, date by date.

This set at Bowery Ballroom, which closed out their latest U.S. tour after a well-received Pitchfork Festival appearance the previous weekend, recalled several elements of the November show at Music Hall that we attended, but with a couple of exciting new offerings. Not only did the band play the new song “Shining”, which we assume will appear on their next record or in recorded format at some point, but they were also joined by Alex Bleeker of opening act Alex Bleeker and the Freaks for a special rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ever-popular “Have You Ever Seen the Rain”. Woods will be spending August in Europe and September on the West Coast. If you’re in either of those places, don’t miss seeing them. Tour dates can be found [HERE].

On Friday night, we caught the Futurebirds at Bowery Ballroom for a great show. The six-piece band hails from Athens, GA and it’s not the first time we here at NYCTaper have had the good fortune to enjoy a taste of their good old-fashioned rock and roll. Last year they came to Irving Plaza to play in full costume for a show during Halloween weekend, and the year prior we saw them perform at Union Pool.

Over seven months of touring, Futurebirds were hard at work writing their sophomore record, Baba Yaga, testing out new material on the road for live audiences. The new LP was released in mid-April on Fat Possum Records and Friday’s show featured a healthy portion of new songs from the album. The band’s energy was downright refreshing after a long week at work, especially with an ice cold pale ale in hand. The crowd was way into the southern rock songs, many of which stretched on into psychedelic jams that reinforced how comfortable these guys are playing this material in a live setting.

Highlights of the set include new song “Virginia Slims” and oldie-but-goodie “Battle For Rome,” both of which you can stream below.

I recorded Futurebirds with a soundboard feed provided by house engineer Kenny and a pair of Schoeps MK4 microphones mounted from our usual spot in the Balcony. Per the Bowery’s usual excellence, the house mix was very well balanced and resulted in a great recording. Enjoy!
