The Dead C: September 20, 2016 First Unitarian Congregational Society

Do The Dead C need any introduction? The band’s status among devotees of noise and Kiwi rock is near mythological. And their long absence from performing in the U.S. has confounded younger listeners who might have discovered the band in the mid-aughts when Ba Da Bing issued the compilation Vain, Erudite, and Stupid and then started reissuing long-out-of-print classics like DR503 and Eusa Kills. This year saw the release of Trouble, comprised of five twitching, droning, and pummeling tracks that thwart any attempt at dissection or categorization. Having long abandoned any semblance of traditional song structure in favor of visceral, blown-eardrum improvisation resembling the band’s most famed track “Driver UFO,” Trouble might yet be The Dead C’s rock opus. So to say the anticipation for their brief September tour (hitting only Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Louisville’s Cropped Out Festival, and Los Angeles) was high would be to massively understate it. Despite the absence of drummer Robbie Yeats, who unfortunately was unable to make the tour, this hour-plus set from Michael Morley and Bruce Russell is a tribute to the band’s endurance. Backed with crashing and ebbing prerecorded drum tracks from Yeats, the duo stretch the bounds of guitar-based music, resulting in a performance that is utterly and uniquely The Dead C.

Acidjack and I recorded this from a central location in the church, combined with a board feed from the engineer Gus. The sound is outstanding; the performance extraordinary. Enjoy!

Nick Millevoi’s Desertion Trio: September 15, 2016 Silent Barn

Since we sung the praises of guitarist Nick Millevoi and his Desertion Quartet after a show at Palisades earlier this year, Millevoi has not only been hitting the pavement with Chris Forsyth’s Solar Motel Band, but he’s been developing more of his own work as well. This show at Silent Barn (which has never looked or sounded better) gave us a taste of that new material as well as some of the songs we love from his current album, including the noise freakout “The Fire That Damaged City Hall.” This show was played as a trio, with Kevin Shea on drums and Johnny DeBlase helming the other guitar. Millevoi’s unique style is a joy to watch live, as it shifts effortlessly between choogling rock to free jazz, and it’s something that sets him apart in a more-than-worthy field of contemporaries. Being able to see Nick is still a too-rare treat, so we’re especially grateful to him for inviting us. We’re sure you’ll agree.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones split wide onstage (as you can see above) in the omnidirectional pattern. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Girls Against Boys: September 13, 2016 Baby’s All Right

Twenty years ago, in 1996, I turned fifteen. Girls Against Boys were touring their third Touch & Go record, House of GVSB, and were scheduled to play Tramps a little less than a month after my birthday. I somehow scraped together $45, scammed a ride to (Nobody Beats) The Wiz, and bought a simple Aiwa walkman with a record function and a clip-on mono microphone, all in order to document my favorite band.

If you were born anytime after House of GVSB was released, you might not have heard of Tramps or The Wiz; Touch & Go has mostly folded; and it’s possible you’ve never held a walkman. But fortunately, in a limited capacity, Girls Against Boys persist. While the band certainly doesn’t play as much as they used to, we got a tour in 2013 (with David Yow contributing some vocals) and even some new music: The Ghost List sounds incredibly vital for any band, much less one that hadn’t released new music in eleven years. In 2014, three-fourths of GVSB reactivated their 80’s Dischord band Soulside and played a couple gigs at Saint Vitus in support of their reissued final album, Trigger. Lucky DC-ers even got a brief New Wet Kojak gig at the Black Cat. Soulside played some more shows last fall in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

But back to Girls Against Boys: Last Tuesday the band played their first show since that 2013 tour, a warmup gig in anticipation of their appearance at Riot Fest Chicago. The set starts off with one from 2002’s Jade Tree LP, You Can’t Fight What You Can’t See; but aside from “Basstation” and “Let’s Get Killed” (off The Ghost List), it’s a lengthy tour of the band’s 90’s Touch & Go output, featuring their most well-known material from Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby, Cruise Yourself, and House of GVSB. For the hardcore fans, there’s the deep cut “Distracted” which appeared on the “Disco Six Six Six” single, and was rarely outed back in the day. The crowd packed into Baby’s small, sweaty, and still partially under construction room for what was to be one of the longer GVSB shows I’ve ever seen. The band were even called back for a second encore of “Rockets Are Red” after the house music had gone on, surely a rare occurrence these days. Aside from some rusty bits here and there and some jokes about their age, I’d swear we were transported back to that ’96 tour.

Girls Against Boys have another festival appearance scheduled at the Sound on Sound Festival in Austin, November 5th. I have it on good authority there are plans for another Brooklyn warmup gig beforehand, so keep on a lookout for that.

People of the North: August 10, 2016 Secret Project Robot

Our lovefest with all things Oneida and Oneida-related continued earlier this month when, on the heels of the final Oneida set at Secret Project Robot, we caught People of the North in the same venue. While POTN shares personnel with Oneida (regulars Kid Millions and Bobby Matador, plus Barry London for this set), the band’s vibe is distinct, with an even-more fluid and keyboard-driven approach. The band has a new album, The Caul, on its way from Thrill Jockey, but who knows whether this material is reflective of that, or just the bandmembers’ mind-state at showtime. Whatever the reason, this 45-minute improv was yet another reminder that with this group of musicians, you can always count on an interesting trip.

I recorded this set with a pair of Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Colin Fisher, Mike Pride, Carl Testa Trio: August 10, 2016 Secret Project Robot

On a night that included incredible experimental music of many stripes — including Chris Forsyth’s set with Loren Connors, and the last Secret Project Robot set ever from People of the North (coming soon), it made perfect sense that the evening’s middle act was a free jazz trio of some of the most interesting and well regarded players we’ve seen in a while. The trio of Colin Fisher, Mike Pride and Carl Testa added a different and welcome dimension, their all-improvisational jam’s headier aspects brought to the fore by the light show behind them. Each of these musicians has a deep resume of appearances with luminaries that cross the jazz and experimental rock realms, and you could feel the breadth of that experience at work in this piece. Anyone who reads our too-infrequent jazz posts on this site knows that our enthusiasm for the genre far outstrips our ability to comment on it, so don’t take my word for it — hear this one for yourself.

Eleven Twenty Nine: July 23, 2016 Trans-Pecos

The beautiful thing about seeing a Tom Carter-related project is you never quite know what you’re going to get, but you know it will be transportive. It could be anything from his trio set with Chris Corsano and Carter Thornton late last year, to his ambient/drone work with Barry Weisblat, to one of his haunting solo guitar sets — whatever you see, you will be glad you did. On this night, we saw one of Carter’s best-loved projects, Eleven Twenty Nine, originally a collaboration with fellow guitarist Marc Orleans which has yielded an impressive album on Northern Spy Records and a followup on Drawing Room Records.

For this special performance at Trans-Pecos, Carter and Orleans were joined by Jimy SeiTang on bass and Rob Smith on drums, both of whom have seen time in our favorites Rhyton. The set consisted of three distinct improvisational pieces, each a rich, engaging tapestry of sound that blended the aesthetics of rock, free jazz and ambient music in the way for which these players have become known. What is an undulating, complex beast of a song, composed improvisationally out of many disciplines becomes a transcendent whole. Witness, for example, the climactic guitar at the end of the first piece, or the subtle, searching quality to the beginning of the last. You can certainly enjoy hearing it happen on a recording, but seeing these guys do their thing live is without parallel.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones up front, Naiant X-X microphones onstage, and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: August 5, 2016 Rough Trade NYC

Any story about Dinosaur Jr. in New York really must start with the shows that didn’t appear on this site — the band’s singular string of seven shows at Bowery Ballroom back in December of 2015 (they’re going to be officially released in some form). There, the band celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of their debut album — an extraordinary feat for almost any act, even more of one for a band who some would argue didn’t hit their commercial potential even during the heyday of their style of music. Joined by an all-star roster of guests every night, J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph proved how much they’ve meant, and continued to mean, to the music that’s been made during their run. That old saw about being defined by the company you keep? There’s a reason for it.

Which brings us to this much more intimate show at Rough Trade NYC, on the heels of the band’s latest tour with fellow late 80s/90s stalwarts Jane’s Addiction. These homecoming nights are always fun, giving a band a chance to unwind in front of friends after a touring slog. The band rewarded us with some first-time playings of their just-released new record, Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not, which could as easily be the mantra of a band whose consistency and quality has been remarkable through lineup changes and a hiatus. If their first shot at “Goin’ Down” was a little rough (in Barlow’s opinion, anyway), the crowd wasn’t bugged by it, as the band showed off the new album tracks alongside many of their best-loved favorites, including their biggest commercial hit, “Feel the Pain.” Of course, the diehards were there for the older classics like “Freak Scene,” “Gargoyle” and “The Lung,” as well as my personal favorite, the night’s closer of “Out There.” If it wasn’t a two-plus hour bonanza of rare tracks and guest stars, this show was closer to what any band really wants to be about — enduring classics played to enduring fans, in a set that proves that their new material is just as vital as the old. After some much-needed rest, I’m sure we’ll see them back at it to tour the new record in full. We’ll be there.

Hans Chew: July 23, 2016 Trans-Pecos

We’ve been following Hans Chew for a while now, since he first played our CMJ show in 2012. Back then, Hans spent the set behind the piano, playing his boogie-driven tunes like modern madcap Jerry Lee Lewis. By the time Hans showed up for this Trans-Pecos show in 2016, he was preparing to release a stellar new album, Unknown Sire, with our friends Divide By Zero records. But when we talked to Hans before this show, he explained to us that he had been so motivated by reading a recent biography of Neil Young that he decided to take an entirely different approach this time — and that for this show, he had an entire new album to draw from. As a result, Hans played the role of guitar lead this time, and he shared three new jams that take clear inspiration from Young’s most daring guitar efforts. As he led off with the sprawling “Cruikshanks,” we could tell this was a very different Hans Chew indeed, one who reveled in extended guitar solos and longer narratives. If any of the three songs fit most closely with Chew’s previous efforts, it was probably the upbeat, honky-tonk inspired “Open Sea,” which itself clocked in at over six minutes, and led into “Freely,” which began as a midtempo rocker before exploding into a fiery solo at the end. Though we’re thrilled for the upcoming record, one has to hope this latest material doesn’t have to sit in the hopper for too long, either.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones close to the stage, Naiant X-X omnis split wide on stage, and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

SAVAK: June 11, 2016 Union Pool (Unblinking Ear Northside Showcase)

Local favorites SAVAK just released their excellent first LP, Best of Luck in Future Endeavors. We had seen a preview back in January and thankfully Unblinking Ear brought them back to Union Pool for their Northside showcase. This afternoon set literally picks up where the album leaves off with a few new songs like “They Are Bones,” “I Don’t Want To Be Defended,” “Loma Prieta,” and “Sick of War.” Like in January, Greg Vegas joins in on saxophone for a few numbers and I’m honestly surprised we didn’t hear cries of “more saxophone!” from the crowd. No further dates currently scheduled for SAVAK, but I’m sure we’ll likely see them again soon promoting this record that will justifiably end up on some 2016 best-of lists.

I recorded this set from our usual location at Union Pool, the room mics combined with a board feed from FOH Kevin. I mixed those down and then Sohrab provided some additional mastering. The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Dead Meadow: May 13, 2016 Saint Vitus

For many of us who grew up on indie rock, Dead Meadow was our introduction to psych/stoner/metal/whathaveyou, owing to a few early aughts tours with the likes of Stephen Malkmus and Sleater-Kinney (among others), and putting out records on indie-rock-label-of-record Matador. In those opening slots, Dead Meadow’s long, plodding nods seemed out of place—it’s only years later that the connected headspace between acts has become obvious. Dead Meadow is among the best at what they do and I’m sure many a thirty-something psych-freak owes at least some of their formative taste to the band. We last caught up with Dead Meadow in 2014 at the Bowery Ballroom, and the intervening couple years saw another change of drummers. But the core of the band and what they do is still there, the proof being this career-spanning set they cooked up for the second of a two-night stand at Saint Vitus.

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue with a board feed from Dead Meadow’s FOH (if anyone knows his name, please let us know so we can credit him). The sound is outstanding, and you’re guaranteed to enjoy this one!
