Weird Owl: July 14, 2011 Union Pool – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Weird Owl make bad-ass stoner rock for the modern era, and this show at Union Pool found them rocking the living hell out of an expectant crowd that was about to see headliner White Hills. It is hard to hear a songs like the reverb-heavy monster “Stral Proj” or the space rock of “Mind Mountain” and not imagine them being played to a crowd of feathered haircuts, bell bottoms and tie-dye rather than modern-day BK hipsters. Weird Owl’s music has a deep, satisfying heaviness to it, with the rich roar of classic analog amps and wah-wah pedals. Their new record, Build Your Beast A Fire, just released on Tee Pee Records, is a fifteen-song monster that finds the band tightening up their songwriting a bit, crafting slightly more approachable songs that deliver on the promise suggested by their 2009 debut, Ever the Silver Cord Be Loosed. Though short, this set gave expectant fans a dose of the new songs’ greatness. Make Weird Owl and Build Your Beast A Fire part of your summer, now. Because we told you so.

hi and lo and I recorded this set with four microphones and a soundboard feed. The split wide cardiod microphones, in particular, give the recording a huge, detailed sound. Enjoy!

Oneida: June 19, 2011 Secret Project Robot (Absolute II Set) – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The third piece of Oneida’s Thank Your Parents trilogy was released in June, and the band performed each of the three albums of the project on the same weekend. We previously posted recordings of the Preteen Weaponry set, and the Rated O set. The final piece was performed at the very unique hour of daybreak, which in June amounted to 4:45 a.m on a Sunday. While some of the participants (namely the band) stayed up all night from the Saturday full-day jam session, I decided to make a fresh day of the event, went to bed early on Saturday night and set the alarm for 4 a.m. When I arrived at Monster Island pre-dawn, I expected a virtually empty room, sans band and diehards. Quite to the contrary, the main space at Secret Project Robot was loaded with all-nighters and a few early risers and was essentially a filled room. As the sun rose and reflected off the Brooklyn side of the East River, Absolute II was played in its entirety. This is difficult music to comprehend on a first listen, but as the sunlight seeped in through the open door on River Street, it was an appropriate sublime soundtrack to accompany the brain haze of an early Sunday daybreak seen through the eyes of the sleep deprived. The entire Thank Your Parents trilogy is a unique musical accomplishment from a band that has spent the last decade and a half inventing new ways to express its infinite musical potential.

I recorded this same in the same manner as the previous two sets, with the Neumanns mounted at the soundboard and mixed with a modest soundboard feed. The sound quality is representative of the performance. Enjoy!

Anamanaguchi: July 22, 2011 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

I’d like to claim to have predicted the kind of huge success that Anamanaguchi has achieved since we saw them last at the Knitting Factory in January, but really I was somewhat late to the game. The band sold out the Knit that cold night, but six months later Music Hall of Williamsburg was packed to the walls on the hottest night in memory. By the time Anamanaguchi took the stage at 11 pm after two energetic openers, the crowd was absolutely manic. The quartet entered to a throbbing programmed beat and worked the crowd for a couple of minutes before breaking into a frenzied “Mess”. Immediately, massive crowd surfing began and a stream of stage jumpers continued unabated throughout the seventy-minute set. Although they are labeled as a 8-bit chiptune band, the energy in Music Hall was clearly right out of the punk manual. The first half of the set continued without break, as each song combined the four lively musicians with the band’s layered synthesizers. By the time the band stopped to catch their wind and switch some guitars, it seemed as if everyone in the pit needed a time out. After a breather, the set continued with four “space” themed songs, including the excellent “Aurora” (streaming below). Following two encores, band and crowd were overtaken by exhaustion and exited the venue tired but satisfied with a show of immense entertainment value from both artist and fan.

I recorded this set from the center of the balcony with the four microphone rig. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Tom Vek: July 13, 2011 Union Pool – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Tom Vek

The comeback of Tom Vek was unexpected, but based upon the early returns it has been well worth the wait. After the success of his debut in 2005 We Have Sound, Vek fell out of sight. Six years later, his second album Leisure Seizure contains the same melodic but frenetic energy that propelled Sound, but works within a more mature framework. Tom came to NYC for a quick two-show trip last week, and we were fortunate to catch the Union Pool show on Wednesday. Vek took the stage with a four-piece band of multi-instrumentalists, that at times includes three bass guitars, two guitars and keys, effects, drums and drum effects. The band members were all amplified by separate digital interface (“DI’s”) boxes and inner-ear monitors (IEM’s), so that while the stage sound was silent, the PA speakers burst forth with crystal clear sound. Vek began the show with two tracks from Seizure, including lead-off “Hold Your Hand”, before revisiting the 2005 charting single and the debut album’s first track “C-C” (streaming below). The set then flowed unabated except for minor instrument swaps through a well-paced hour of songs from each of the two albums. The band seemed to be all business as Vek spoke very little to the crowd and the group wasted no time in between songs. The quality of the material and Vek’s no-nonsense approach bode well for the return of this compelling artist. Tom Vek is currently on an extensive tour through the UK, but we expect he’ll return to the US for a full tour this Fall.

I recorded this set with the Neumanns mounted on the balcony and mixed with a superb balanced board feed. The band’s advanced equipment set-up created a board mix of great clarity and this recording reflects that quality. Enjoy!

Man Forever: July 14, 2011 Union Pool – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Stream of Entire Set

We make no secret of the love we have here at NYCTaper for all things Oneida, and that definitely extends to their prodigy of a drummer, Kid Millions and his side project Man Forever.  Man Forever explores the more ambient side of Millions’ musical powers while still focusing on his incredible drum skills.  This show was one continuous 30-minute piece, with Millions and another drummer banging out a dense, seemingly endless polyrhythm on a single shared drum, while two keyboardists (including Oneida’s own Bobby Matador) added slow-burning keyboard effects.  Like most Man Forever shows, this was a one-time offering; it was a radical departure from the group’s previous performance in the space, when Millions brought out a five-guitar ensemble to perform an entirely different composition.  This is an excellent multi-source capture of this unique performance that should not be missed by fans of Millions and Oneida’s work.

hi and lo and I recorded this set with two sets of mics – Schoeps supercardiods in a tight pattern clamped to the edge of the soundboard, plus spaced AKG large-diaphragm microphones split on either side of the board on the balcony in wide cardiod mode – plus a soundboard feed.  The sound is outstanding.  Enjoy!

Man Forever shared a bill at this show with Weird Owl and White Hills. Weird Owl will be posted shortly.  We are awaiting permission from White Hills to post that recording and hope to be able to offer it as well.

The Coathangers: June 24, 2011 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

July 12, 2011

If there’s a really an identifiable punk/garage “ethic”, the Coathangers do it right. The band plays their instruments with abandon, writes songs that tell it straight, and at their wild live shows, they don’t hold anything back or pull any punches. At their most recent NYC show a couple of weeks back at DIY venue 285 Kent, the Coathangers played a beyond-punk-length set that was extraordinarily entertaining for all the right reasons. Their energy, sense of humor, and apparent disregard for convention was evident from the outset — “Johnny” is a screaming punk song that set the tone that continued throughout songs like “Gettin Mad and Pumpin Iron”, “Nestle in My Boobies” and early 7″ release “Shake Shake” (streaming below). In between, the band performed much of their brand new release Larceny & Old Lace (Suicide Squeeze). As they were faced with an opening set deadline, the band continued to play through house music and ultimately when the microphone power was cut, performed the last song completely off-mic. It didn’t seem to matter though, as the massive crowd participation propelled the Coathangers to the finish.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones on an eight-foot stand next to the soundboard and mixed it with a vocal-heavy soundboard feed. This room presents many audio challenges and the mix and balance of this recording was a difficult prospect. We’ve done the best under the circumstances, and hope you enjoy!

The Northside Festival of Brooklyn brought us some amazing music this year and Friday night’s Kanine Records Showcase at Knitting Factory was no exception. An incredible line-up of seven bands took the stage that night, including Eternal Summers which played just before headliner Surfer Blood took the stage. We last saw Eternal Summers play a great show at Glasslands earlier this spring, and the crowd was buzzing in anticipation of Friday’s show.

Eternal Summers delivered an intense 40-minute set packed with 14 songs of pure energy. For this recording, I parked in our usual sweet spot and recorded the show with a pair of Schoeps hypercardioid microphones. I mixed my tape with a fantastic soundboard feed and hope you enjoy it!

The Babies: June 18, 2011 McCarren Park (Northside Festival) – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Having just caught their set at Knitting Factory a few weeks prior, I felt more up to speed with what The Babies were up when they kicked off the proceedings at the Northside Festival’s outdoor stage in McCarren Park.  I actually preferred this set to the Knitting Factory set, partly because the daytime outdoor setting was the perfect way to experience Cassie Ramone and Kevin Morby’s laid-back garage rock.  It didn’t hurt any that the outdoor PA mix was surprisingly strong, making for a recording that captures the artists’ vocal interplay perfectly.  One easy test of a band’s staying power is how well they hold up to repeated listens – especially live shows – in a short period of time.  Already, songs like “Breakin’ the Law”, “Sick Kid” and “Here Comes Trouble” feel like fantastic summer jams for this season and beyond.

I recorded this set with AKG large-diaphragm microphones on “omnidirectional” setting and split wide, plus an excellent soundboard feed.  The recording is excellent.  Enjoy!

Holiday Shores: June 19, 2011 NYCTaper Northside Showcase @ Public Assembly – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

[Photo from Holiday Shores’ facebook page]

We were thrilled when Holiday Shores agreed to play our first-ever Northside Festival showcase. Like Northside favorites Surfer Blood, Holiday Shores are part of a growing contingent of Florida bands making interesting music (they’re from Tallahassee). The band took the opportunity at our showcase to perform five new songs that will appear on their forthcoming LP, New Masses for Squaw Peak, which will be released on September 13 by twosyllable records. Judging by this show at Public Assembly, Holiday Shores’ latest material has evolved somewhat from their first record, Columbus’d the Whim, with longer, more languid compositions and a more distinct sound that relies heavily on 60s organ sounds while staying true to their beach-y aesthetic. This is summer music, sure, “of the beach and not for the beach”, as Pitchfork put it, but it has become something more, too. Like many of the bands featured at our showcase, Holiday Shores have some exciting next steps ahead of them.

I recorded this set from the same location as the Quilty recording, emphasizing the soundboard feed over the audience feed as it was excellently balanced. Other than some bursts of feedback in the monitors during a couple of points, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

U Say USA: June 19, 2011 NYCTaper Northside Showcase @ Public Assembly – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

July 4, 2011
By

I invited Bushwick’s U Say USA to play our first annual NYCTaper Northside Showcase without having actually seen their live show, but on the strength of some very positive word of mouth. Though the term “Bushwick band” might conjure the thought of an experimental keyboard project, U Say USA use their neighborhood (prominently featured on the cover of their record, The Greatest Recession (I’ve Ever Been To)) as the jumping off point for their songwriting, which deals with populist themes appropriate to the current moment, with a sense of humor to boot. As to their sound, the band combines some of punk’s jagged edges with a strong classic rock vibe. Particularly of note (and uncommon to an indie rock show) is lead guitarist Ian Gilliam’s guitar work – the man can seriously solo. The band have been upping their gig count of late, including a recently-completed residence at Williamsburg’s Trash Bar, and we expect to see more of them in the neighborhood.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other sets from this show. This recording emphasizes the board feed a bit more heavily, but overall is quite good. Also, apologies for the minor tracking error on tracks 2 and 3. Enjoy!
