Tropical Fuck Storm: October 8, 2018 Elsewhere Zone One

If my memory is correct, it’s been nearly ten years since Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin were last in NYC with The Drones, having made stops at Union Hall and The Bell House in 2009. But good things come to those who wait and now the pair are back with their new mushroom cloud of a band, Tropical Fuck Storm. The album, A Laughing Death in Meatspace, is nothing less than the antidote to a twisted, doomed world, with song topics spanning chess to cell phones to nuclear weapons in as many moves. With bandmates Lauren Hammel and Erica Dunn, Tropical Fuck Storm have been touring the U.S. opening for Modest Mouse, only taking a break to play this headlining set at Elsewhere’s Zone One. Beyond playing most of the tracks from A Laughing Death in Meatspace, they play Lost Animal’s “Lose the Baby,” Kitschin sings The Divinyls’ “Back to the Wall” (which was released as a b-side to “You Let My Tyres Down”), and the band closes with The Drones song “Baby Squared.”

The Tropical Fuck Storm tour with Modest Mouse continues in Montclair tonight (October 10)—tickets are still available and you’ve definitely got time. Go on down early to catch TFS. Check the TFS website for further dates.

In the evolving story of Luna v2.0, the band continues to entertain in new ways. While last year it was the eclectic and meticulously curated covers album A Sentimental Education, this year’s tour seems to be an exercise in finding the deep cuts that haven’t been performed in more a decade. Its been three years now and as we’ve chronicled umpteen shows, but at this Industry City show in August we saw Luna perform four songs for the first time — “Math Wiz”, “I Can’t Wait”, “Broken Chair” and the Galaxie 500 number “Strange”. Overall, this show was one of the stronger performances we’ve seen from Luna, and it wasn’t just the ambitious selist. The band seems in particularly good form, tight, focused, and in great spirits. These days Luna shows are must see and we’re luck the band continues to faithfully play NYC shows when they do their mini tours.

While Luna currently does not have any shows scheduled (they just finished a tour of Europe), Dean Wareham has a new collaboration with Cheval Sombre and they will play NYC at Le Poisson Rouge on December 7. Tickets here.

I recorded this set with the outdoor-friendly Neumann large diaphragm cards blended with soundboard feed mixed with precision by Evan Player. Despite some minor noise from the windy evening, the mix worked quite well and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Mountain Movers: July 28, 2018 Union Pool

So much goodness lately from Mountain Movers: the recently-released “New Jam” EP, the forthcoming LP Pink Skies on Trouble in Mind, this smoking set from their hot summertime Union Pool stop… When I saw the band back in June at Wonders of Nature, Dan promised that by their next visit they’d be a well-oiled machine. No kidding, this show is something like their 18th of a 17-day tour supporting Howlin’ Rain. Mountain Movers don’t so much find their groove here as dig deeper into one they’ve been excavating for a couple weeks. Wild.

Howlin’ Rain: July 28, 2018 Union Pool

July sure felt like the month of Howlin’ Rain: I caught them twice at Brooklyn Bowl opening for Grateful Shred, and then a couple weeks later this headlining set at Union Pool. Whew! But what a tour finale we have here. The guys sharpened their axes in the two weeks they toured between Brooklyn appearances and it shows. Dig this bawling rendition of “The Wild Boys”—which we hadn’t heard at Brooklyn Bowl—and an extra jammy “Death Prayer.” More Rain! More Rain!

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: July 28, 2018 Union Pool (Summer Thunder)

After playing as a trio for the last couple-ish years, the Solar Motel Band is back to a quartet, having debuted their new dual-drummer lineup last month with shows at Monty Hall and Union Pool. Ryan Jewell (re-)joins the so-called “Sunwatchers Motel Band” lineup of Forsyth, Peter Kerlin, and Jason Robira. We caught the daytime set at Union Pool’s Summer Thunder outdoor stage, where the band played three new songs and more to a good-size crowd of folks willing to brave the heat. I’m never one to scoff at new Solar Motel tunes, but the real gem here is this ripping, sixteen-minute performance of “Dreaming in the Non-Dream.” Can’t wait to hear more from this lineup!

Grateful Shred: July 14, 2018 Brooklyn Bowl

Time for everybody to take a step back and give the folks up front some room. Better? Alright then. We’re back with night two of Grateful Shred at Brooklyn Bowl. Saturday picks up after an energetic second set from Friday, with terrific outings of “Cumberland Blues” to start, “Mississippi Half-Step,” and the classic Scarlet>Fire pairing. But the second set is where things really cook, with an epic “Truckin'” > Space > “St. Stephen” > “Not Fade Away” > “St. Stephen” suite that’ll have you lose time. And while you’re enjoying that, check in on some Grateful Shred tour dates and see if they’re coming your way—it’s wayyyyyyy better in person.

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: July 19, 2018 Elsewhere

Watching the interplay of Steve Gunn and John Truscinski onstage, you get the sense that these two are hand-in-glove players, to the point you almost can’t imagine them playing with anyone else (though they do). That interplay is part of what makes all of their Three Lobed releases so special. Each of them, including their latest and most adventurous to date, Bay Head, feels like it sprung forth fully-formed, a jam session whose synchrony had to be made permanent. On this night at Elsewhere, after kicking off with their new drone track “Road Bells,” the duo launched into straight into a version of “Banh Mi Ringtones” that felt like just that, with the action peaking in a furious Gunn solo. The Ocean Parkway love continued with that title track, followed by the gorgeous “Seagull for Chuck Berry.” Things came to a close in a similar vein to the show we saw at Union Pool in January, the sprawler “Gunter,” featuring a new drone-based intro. Even that relatively new track felt re-imagined in the moment, and that’s the glory of Gunn-Truscinski duo. Fortunately, this is one of those jam sessions whose synchrony was documented.

I recorded this set from the soundboard cage with a board feed from house engineer Chris, together with Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Howlin’ Rain: July 14, 2018 Brooklyn Bowl

Before you dive in to Howlin’ Rain’s second show from Brooklyn Bowl, here’s your reminder that the band has two shows coming up this week at Monty Hall on Friday, July 27 and Union Pool on Saturday, July 28. Both are with New Haven, CT’s Mountain Movers. Friday includes additional support from Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band; Saturday includes support from Prison (Solar Motel Band play Union Pool’s day show on Saturday). These are absolutely amazing lineups and if you follow NYCTaper you’re aware of most of these bands and know we’re fans. See you there!

Okay, back to Brooklyn Bowl: Night two features a similar setlist to the previous night, adding a new arrangement of “Coliseum” from Mansion Songs. The band sounds especially loose for the Saturday night crowd, which you can hear right away in the elongated performance of “Missouri.” Speaking of performances, in the review of the first night I neglected to mention how great the band is: Jeff McElroy plays bass like a lead instrument and his lines are really unique; Dan Cervantes adds flair on the guitar, not to mention his Neil Young-stylings; Justin Smith swings on drums and holds this whole wailing thing together. The harmonies are especially great, with all four players adding vocals.

Howlin’ Rain will be back in our area on Friday, but if you’re near Detroit, Pittsburgh, Toronto, or Greenfield you can see them this week. Check out tour dates over at their website.

Grateful Shred: July 13, 2018 Brooklyn Bowl

True confession: I’ve never seen one of the various latter-day projects of any of the former members of the Grateful Dead. (I know, I know. I’m working my way up to it.) But I’ve also never seen a Dead cover band—that is until Friday night. California’s Grateful Shred made their East Coast debut last week with a show at Garcia’s at the Cap (appropriate) and two nights at Brooklyn Bowl. It occurs to me that fidelity to the spirit of the Dead exists not on the stage, but in the crowd, the lot, the makeshift Shakedown Streets that pop up surrounding these events. I’m not qualified to judge whether the Shred performed these songs perfectly, hit the notes right, whether they were too faithful to the material or not faithful enough (Deadheads have lots of opinions, man). But what I can speak to is the vibe they created: good times were had with plenty of dancing and new friends. On night two, a guy named Rudy approached me, noticing the mic stand and thanked me for taping. He gave me one of a bunch of homemade Grateful Shred shirts he had made to commemorate the shows. We talked about how the Shred do a great rendition of “The Music Never Stopped.” There’s pretty much nothing I could imagine that would be more in the spirit of the Dead. Go forth, enjoy the Shred—we’ll be back in a little bit with night two.

Howlin’ Rain: July 13, 2018 Brooklyn Bowl

Howlin’ Rain’s latest album, The Alligator Bride, is the result of a culmination of forces at work in the Howlverse: after the grand studio work of Mansion Songs, Ethan Miller recorded The Alligator Bride with his touring band, successfully bottling the sound we heard on their 2015 tour. The record’s vision hearkens back to the earlier Southern Gothic days of Howlin’ Rain—and not incidentally their first self-titled album has just been reissued on vinyl for the first time. Miller also recently talked to the folks on the No Simple Road podcast, sharing that his inspiration for the live-in-the-studio sound came from the Dead’s Europe ’72 opus. So it was more than appropriate to find the ’Rain opening up for Californian Dead cover band, Grateful Shred, for their first two East Coast gigs. The ’Rain are in fine form here on night one, treating the Dead-freaks in attendance to an opening instrumental followed by five tunes from The Alligator Bride.

Howlin’ Rain continue their tour without the Grateful Shred, and you’re highly advised to catch them in your town. They’ll be back in the NYC-area for shows at Monty Hall on July 27 and Union Pool on July 28. Meanwhile we’ll be back in a few days with recordings of Howlin’ Rain night 2, as well as both nights of Grateful Shred. As they say, stay tuned to these higher frequencies!
