Mountain Movers: June 10, 2018 Wonders of Nature

July 12, 2018
By

No longer just the home of white clam pizza, New Haven, Connecticut’s latest claim to fame is psych rock from the likes of Mountain Movers. The band’s latest self-titled slab is a dose of distorted guitars swirling around heavy grooves that, hey why not, probably go great with their hometown’s signature pie. Guitarist-singer Dan Greene has been at it for 10 years, but the current band with Rick Omonte on bass, Kryssi Battalene on lead guitar, and Ross Menze on drums have this thing really dialed-in. We caught the band a year ago at Union Pool and they’ve only gotten better since. This recording captures the band on the small stage at relatively new Brooklyn joint Wonders of Nature, opening for the heady Garcia Peoples. It features a couple tunes from that self-titled record plus a couple new ones, “Freeway” and the live staple “New Jam,” which is the subject of a forthcoming 12″ of the same title. Mountain Movers are currently touring with Howlin’ Rain and these are some absolute can’t-miss shows. In the NYC-area they’ve got Monty Hall on July 27 and Union Pool on July 28. We hope to see you there!

Guerilla Toss: June 19, 2018 Union Pool (Residency Night 3)

June 28, 2018
By

The phenomenal Brooklyn band Guerilla Toss graced the hometown crowd with a monthlong residency at local haunt Union Pool that found the band trying out new songs and compelling covers, and generally driving the locals wild. This band’s bread and butter has always been the live setting, but these shows put the band at a new level. Against the backdrop of sick visuals from Macrodose, Kassie Carlson whipped the room into a frenzy, culminating in a room wide mosh pit during set-closing “Polly’s Crystal.” Whipping from one song straight into the next for almost the entire hour, the band served up sixteen songs that included an ESG cover and the new numbers “Come Up With Me” and “Green Apple.” In case you were worried, I think we can expect their next release to meet or exceed the outstanding GT Ultra.

This recording combines engineer Doug’s awesome house mix plus my Schoeps MK5 mics from the center of the balcony. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Chuck Johnson: April 12, 2018 Union Pool

It’s been a while since we checked in with the great Chuck Johnson. Almost a year ago he put out the excellent Balsams for VDSQ, which finds Chuck experimenting with the pedal steel guitar and discovering some soothing ambient sounds along the way. You’ll hear some of that familiar twang from the instrument, but taken in a different and more subtle direction than maybe you’re used to. It’s been getting a ton of very deserved praise and anticipation was high for an in-person visit. For many of us New Yorkers, this Union Pool gig was our first chance to finally see Chuck perform live with the pedal steel, stopping off on his way to The Thousand Incarnations of the Rose festival. It was well worth the wait as we were treated to some deep listening in the form of a continuous thirty-minute stretch of pedal steel and effect pedal balladry.

Wet Tuna: April 27, 2018 Wonders of Nature

By

There are few things in the world more satisfying than Wet Tuna’s space-hazy folk. Matt and Pat have a rare chemistry that comes only after playing together some twenty-odd years. Wet Tuna are finally on the road for their first real tour (check out the full list of dates here) in support of Livin’ the Die. We caught their sold-out gig at new-ish Williamsburg spot, Wonders of Nature, a perfectly chill small room for the duo. Tune in for these exploratory jams and Wet Tuna will see you on that golden road.

Recorded front and center from the tapers pit with the MBHO’s in stereo XY configuration. The sound is killer. Enjoy!

The Messthetics: April 20, 2018 The Bell House

April 22, 2018
By

I guess you can’t really talk about the Messthetics without mentioning that the band features Fugazi’s rhythm section of Joe Lally on bass and Brendan Canty on drums, joined by jazz/experimental guitarist Anthony Pirog. But if you’re showing up to a Messthetics show looking for the second coming of Fugazi, you won’t be so much disappointed as woefully uninformed. Instead, you’ll find yourself in the midst of wrench-tight math rock, emphasis on the rock. Lally and Canty have been playing together pretty much forever at this point, and those guys don’t miss a beat. Pirog, a youngster in comparison, adds a fresh guitar sound to the mix, playing sometimes rhythmically and sometimes wildly. Their self-titled Dischord release is only a month old, but already the band brought with them four new songs in addition to playing the entirety of the album. They continue touring the U.S. through May, followed up by some Japan dates. Scope all those dates at the Dischord site.

I recorded this from dead center, with the MBHO’s in DIN stereo configuration, combined with board feed from the Bell House FOH Travis. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

The Gories: April 13, 2018 Elsewhere

April 19, 2018
By

Late last year, this legendary Detroit garage band announced a rare NYC date. No, I’m not talking about MC50, I’m talking about The Gories. Combining the ferocity of Motor City greats MC5 and The Stooges with the minimalism of The Velvet Underground (with way more swing than any of these three), The Gories are the best band you never knew about while they were around. They garnered acclaim only after Mick Collins found success with The Dirtbombs, and have toured sporadically in the past decade. In 2013, Third Man Records released The Shaw Tapes, an essential and raw live document from a 1988 house party. But Collins, along with guitarist-vocalist Dan Kroha and drummer Peggy O’Neill, don’t play many house parties these days. Instead, their one-off Brooklyn show found them breaking in the new-ish venue Elsewhere, run by the folks who brought you Glasslands. Playing classic Gories tracks along with covers ranging from the well-known (John Lee Hooker’s “Boogie Chillen'” and Suicide’s “Ghostrider”) to the obscure (The Keggs’ “To Find Out”) this crew hasn’t lost the spark that makes their original output—three albums and a handful of singles—so vital. Long live The Gories!

Thanks to Katie and the Elsewhere crew for making this recording happen. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Bill Orcutt: April 12, 2018 Union Pool

April 17, 2018
By

Last year, Bill Orcutt released some of his most accessible sounds on a self-titled electric guitar record on his own Palilalia Records imprint. The album reimagines some songs he’d already explored on A History of Every One and elsewhere, like Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman.” Many bear only a passing resemblance to the original compositions, having been fully twisted by Orcutt’s interpretation. To call his performances of these well-known songs unique would be a massive understatement. You might also call them “difficult,” but that would would be ignoring the incredible grace behind the playing. Seeing Orcutt perform some of these songs last week I was struck by how moving they could be.

(For an interesting experiment, I’d encourage you to compare Orcutt’s take on “Over the Rainbow” here with another version recorded in the same room almost exactly three years prior: Sir Richard Bishop doing his own version of the song, titled “Nowhere Over the Rainbow.”)

This set was recorded with the AKGs set up in stereo DINa configuration, plus a board feed from FOH Doug. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Benefit for Sweet Relief: Oneida live March 3, 2018 at Secret Project Robot

March 12, 2018
By

Dear Friends,

As I’m sure you’ve already heard, Oneida drummer Kid Millions was in a serious car accident a few weeks back and we’ve all been sending him our positive healing vibes. Kid is a vital part of our music community here in NYC and we can’t wait to see him behind the kit again.

We recognize the hardships musicians face when confronted with medical needs. In that spirit we’re offering a download of last week’s Oneida record release show at Secret Project Robot in exchange for a small donation to aid musicians. As per their mission statement, Sweet Relief “provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems.” All money received for this recording via Bandcamp (minus the Bandcamp/Paypal fees) will be donated to Sweet Relief.

Click here to head over to Bandcamp and grab a killer recording that finds Oneida—minus Kid who was there in spirit—working through most of their excellent new album, Romance, out now on Joyful Noise. (They’ve got that sweet  “Town Crier” 7″ as well.) The band was forced to postpone their March tour dates and are in the process of rescheduling, so be sure to show them some love when they hit your city soon. Keep in touch with the band via Facebook or their new Twitter account for the latest on those.

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: January 9, 2018 Union Pool

January 15, 2018
By

Until the surprise announcement of Bay Head from Gunn-Truscinski Duo last year, it seemed like these guys may never put out another record together. Their last platter, Ocean Parkway, was released back in 2012 and besides a very special gig for the Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen, the pair had been awfully quiet for a long time. Fortunately for us Bay Head picks up right where they left off, proving that when Steve Gunn and John Truscinski get a room together, it’s a rare magic that results. And speaking of rare, the duo aren’t doing many shows together in support of the record, but we were lucky enough to capture this set from Union Pool last week. Old classics “Bahn Mi Ringtones” and “Ocean Parkway” brought back memories of Zebulon gigs past, while new songs “Sugar,” “Seagulls for Chuck Berry,” and “Gunter” were captivatingly fresh.

If you’re in LA, be sure to grab tickets for their show with Body/Head.

And if you’re in Brooklyn, Union Pool has another free show scheduled for this Tuesday, Jan. 16, with the inimitable Sir Richard Bishop headlining.

I recorded this from our usual spot with MBHOs combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Doug. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Chad VanGaalen: December 6, 2017 Rough Trade BK

December 13, 2017
By

[screenshot from this video]

Chad VanGaalen is a modern day Rennaisance man. He’s a Juno nominee, Polaris prize nominee, music producer, artist, composer (for Adult Swim TV Series Dream Corp LLC) — the Calgary native is an all around talented guy. One wonders where the man gets time to write, record and release his own albums, but this year he did just that. Light Information (Sub Pop / Flemish Eye) is VanGaalen’s first record in three years, and of course he played all of the instruments and recorded it in his own studio.

Chad VanGaalen just completed an extensive tour in support of Light Information and the near-end of the tour reached NYC last week. We were fortunate to finally get to see this superb artist at Rough Trade after several near misses over the last decade or so. And it was well worth the wait. This performance by Chad and his four piece band was a rip-roaring post-punk trek through much of the new album and some VanGaalen classics. The show also featured some hilarious and downright weird banter, but it all fit with the proceedings. Chad is a unique artist with a very specific sound and vision and the opportunity to see him at the top of his game touring on an A+ album was truly a treat. I hope he comes back to NYC soon.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue, which our Schoeps cards mounted centered at the soundboard booth and mixed with an outstanding feed provided by house FOH Dustin. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
