Diane Cluck: September 20, 2019 Trans-Pecos

These days, Diane Cluck performs in NYC about once every eighteen months or so. Her last appearance in NY was in May of 2018 where she was backed into a late show and as a result her set that night was somewhat truncated. When we booked Diane for this year’s show at Trans-Pecos, there were no such limitations and this performance was undoubtedly the longest Diane Cluck show we’ve ever seen.

At Pecos last month, Diane was relaxed, playful, in good spirits, and thoroughly engaging. The set clocks in well over 90 minutes and the show contains plenty of banter, accepted requests, give and take with the engaged crowd, and two encores. Early in the set, Diane played tribute to her friend David Berman with a heartfelt cover of The Silver Jews “People”.

The exciting news is that Diane Cluck has fully recorded a new album due for release soon, which will be her first proper l.p. release since 2014’s Boneset. This night saw the performance of several of the new songs, the quality of which bodes well for this much anticipated album. The balance of the show was a nice sampling of the best material of Diane’s distinguished career and ultimately there really wasn’t much more that we could have asked for. Diane’s Northeast tour is complete, but we eagerly await her return perhaps for an album release show!

This set was recorded directly from the soundboard at a fairly low volume. The boosting and balance of the levels introduced some background noise into the sound (minor hiss mostly) but the mix and the sound quality is still quite excellent. Enjoy!

Ever since we captured Diane Cluck‘s inspired performance at Joe’s Pub in early 2013, I’ve been trying to work with Diane on a show. This NYCTaper Presents event at Trans Pecos was the culmination of that desire and frankly it could not have gone any better. On a cold Tuesday night in Ridgewood Queens, Diane, Jeffrey Lewis and their curated opener Kid In The Attic filled up Pecos and each performer delivered an outstanding set. This was the final night of Diane and Jeff’s East Coast tour and the night had a celebratory feel. Diane’s setlist featured a nice career-spanning selection of material with an emphasis on her newest and perhaps most consistently excellent release Boneset. After the main set when Diane asked for requests and a sharp fan asked for “The Turnaround Road”, the off-the-cuff version became my own personal highlight of the set. We are streaming it below. Afterwards, Diane was joined by Jeff for three songs before closing the show with perhaps her most well known song “Sara”. We thought that the show was over at that point but the still-packed crowd gave the performer an enthusiastic ovation and Diane returned for an encore. Diane Cluck will not be performing in the US until the Fall, but she will be on an extensive European tour in April and throughout May, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards on a stand at the front of the stage and mixed with a board feed. I didn’t raise my live levels enough during this set so that when the levels were boosted in post there are some artifacts of the process — mainly some hiss at quieter moments. Otherwise, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Diane Cluck live
[still from this video]

I think its fair to say that Diane Cluck has had an admirable but unconventional career. As part of the early 2000’s NYC anti-folk movement, she’s been an abundant songwriting and performing talent for well over a decade. But while some of her early contemporaries have moved to major labels, Diane has eschewed conventional success to pursue a more rewarding personal journey. But it seems that despite her uncompromising career choices, her time has come. Last Spring, Diane introduced her “Song of the Week”, where in a kickstarter-style subscription service her fans can receive one song at regular intervals until all 24 songs of her project are revealed. Each release is accompanied by lyrics and personal discussions with Diane. This is essentially artist-to-fan interaction at its purest form and represents an ideal format for this particular artist. At present, there have been eight releases which have included seven songs and set of poems. At Joe’s Pub on Tuesday night, Diane Cluck performed all seven of those songs in a compellingly beautiful seventy minute set. While the venue was not packed on this mid-week late show, there was nevertheless a healthy crowd of adoring fans, all of whom were quiet and rapt with attention to the performer throughout the music but who were also vociferous in their praise in between songs. Diane performed with a trio who included her recent collaborators cellist Isabel Castellvi and percussionist Anders Griffen, and the group worked through a setlist of highlights from Diane’s catalog with grace and precision. Diane Cluck does not perform frequently in NYC, but rest assured we’ll be there again when she returns.

There are some outstanding photos from this show at Gretchen Robinette’s tumblr [here].

I recorded this set with the DPA 4061 omnis attached to the large pole on the right side of the venue and mixed with a mono feed from the soundboard. Joe’s Pub has some hurdles to capture a clean recording, including the sounds of an active restaurant and the rumble of the 6 train below the venue. I mixed the sources about 60/40 in favor of the board over the mics, but some of the ambient sounds can still be heard, which are necessary in order to maintain the feel of the room. Overall, the sound of this recording is still quite excellent. Enjoy!
