Heartless Bastards: July 15, 2010 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Samples

I first saw Heartless Bastards about a year and a half ago when they opened for The Black Keys and was pretty blown away.  Since then, I’ve been waiting (somewhat impatiently, I’ll admit) for them to return to NYC with their indie-garage rock-blues amalgam and headline their own show.  My wish was granted when Erika, Dave, Mark and Jesse played not just one, but two back-to-back concerts at Music Hall of Williamsburg and Bowery Ballroom.  Suffice to say, I wasn’t disappointed: acidjack and I caught the first night at MHoW and by the time the house lights came up, I couldn’t wait to go to the second night.  The setlist included songs culled from their three albums, a short acoustic interlude, violinist Zy Orange Lyn joining the band for a handful of songs and Peter Pisano of Peter Wolf Crier sitting in for the encore’s “Could Be So Happy” (the Peter Wolf Crier and The Builders and the Butchers sets will be coming soon).  While the setlists were essentially the same both nights, there was the surprise addition of “Searching For the Ghost” during the encore at Bowery.  Adding to the milieu, someone in the crowd inflated a few condoms that bounced around the venue (which Jesse makes reference to) for a good part of the show and can be heard occasionally popping throughout the recording.  On a personal note, I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Wennerstrom after one of the gigs and she is an absolute and gracious sweetheart.  Yeah, I’m smitten.

We were in our regular spot on the balcony next to the soundboard and, aside from the occasional rumble of being under an a/c vent and a group that preferred to chat loudly rather than enjoy the music, we came out with an excellent recording.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Diamondsnake: June 17, 2010 Highline Ballroom – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

I first heard about Diamondsnake literally the day before this gig and had my interest piqued due to the inclusion in the lineup of Tomato, the drummer/lead singer from Sound of Urchin, and Moby, well-known for his electronic music.  Rounding out the band is Phil Costello, of Satanicide and Valley Lodge fame, and Dave Hill, also from Valley Lodge.  Even after perusing their website, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect: despite what you’ll hear alluded to during the concert, this was their debut and the first time they had performed in front of a live audience as a group.  With tongue planted firmly in cheek, they will invariably draw comparisons to Spinal Tap and Tenacious D.  The difference being that the members of Diamondsnake can play really well.  And by play really well, I mean play their asses off.  Phil, on lead vocals, was at times channeling Bon Scott and Bruce Dickinson and hitting notes that could shatter glass; he also strapped on a guitar or bass for a few songs.  Tomato spent the show trying to beat his drum kit into a smoldering pile of debris and nearly succeeded.  Dave, alternating between bass and guitar, played the stealth role, amazing the fans with his bass lines and 6-string chops when you least expected it.  And Moby… shredding on the lead guitar: who knew?  Topping it off are very well constructed songs; they just sound great.  Wearing their influences on their collective sleeve, I heard bits of ’70’s hard rock and metal (AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin), ’80’s hair metal/glam (Motley Crue, Poison, Cinderella) and hints of the Bad Brains/Melvins punk-metal crunch.  Add their salacious and sexy dancing girls, the Snake Charmers, into the mix and you had a good, old fashioned rock spectacle.  Not being familiar with their material didn’t matter as the crowd had no problem getting into it.  If you want biting social commentary and topics ripped from the headlines in your music, well, you’re mostly out of luck here.  But if you want to rock out and have fun, then you’re in the right place.  I strongly recommend you check out “D-Snake” if you’re in the mood for a great, loud time.

Our location in the venue was at a corner of the balcony which gave us a commanding view of the house and a direct line of sight to the P.A.  Other than the enthusiastic hollering of some attendees – which testifies to the vibe of the show – the quality and clarity of this recording is very good.  A big thank you to the staff at Highline Ballroom and especially to Diamondsnake for giving us the greenlight to record this awesome concert.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Melvins: June 18, 2010 and May 15, 2009 Webster Hall – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Melvins
[At the May 2009 Webster Hall show.  This photo courtesy of Ryan Muir]

Melvins have now been at it for more than 25 years.  In that time, they inspired many rock legends in the Seattle/Pacific NW scene, Kurt Cobain and Nirvana among them, and have consistently made vital music that rarely if ever crossed paths with the mainstream.  Originally a trio, in recent years they have come out with an awe-inspiring two-drummer attack featuring original drummer Dale Crover and Coady Willis that only magnifies their sludgy personification of the Seattle sound.  The crowd and performance at both of these fantastic shows from Webster Hall – the earlier being one of their mammoth 25th anniversary shows from last year, the more recent one being a shorter set opening for metal gods Isis, who are on their final run before breaking up – spoke to the authenticity of this act.  For once, I attended a Friday night show where every fan stood at rapt attention as this foursome demolished ears and melted faces, including sharing several new songs from their latest, The Bride Screamed Murder.

Of the May 15, 2009 set, Johnny Fried Chicken Boy had this to say:

“This was one of several “25th anniversary” gigs the Melvins performed in the spring of ‘09 that included the album ‘Houdini‘ played in its entirety.  Technically, Buzz “King Buzzo” Osborne has been fronting the band under that moniker a little longer, but who’s counting?  I hadn’t seen the band since ‘97 and am I glad I pulled the trigger on getting tickets.  It was one of those shows that remind you that you’re alive; the energy was phenomenal and spilled over into the moderate pit that broke out.  Having forgotten how amazing these guys can be in a live setting, it brought back memories of this old man’s youth.  They opened with a short set of material from the ‘Mangled Demos from 1983‘ disc that had their first drummer, Mike Dillard, pounding the skins and current, long-time drummer, Dale Crover, on bass.  Trevor Dunn came out later to handle the low-end duties after Dale switched to the drums.  I’ve been to a lot of concerts but this was definitely in my top three of loudest shows I’d seen and I don’t have the memory or time to scratch my head remembering the other two.  It was so loud my clothes were vibrating, as were the keys and loose change in my pockets.  It was so loud my friend had to go sit down because she was getting nauseous.”

These shows were recorded in very different ways.  I recorded the June 2010 set with the DPA microphones mounted to an articulated arm clamped to the balcony, while Johnny recorded the May 2009 set using a lean and mean mobile rig.

Since some people may ask, please note that we were not permitted to record Isis.  Their management made it very clear that the band does not allow audio taping of any kind, and we respect their wishes.  We wish Isis the best in their final shows and future endeavors.

Drive-By Truckers: April 1, 2010 Webster Hall – FLAC and MP3 Downloads

[Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood at the Terminal 5 show in 2008. Photo courtesy of One Louder Photo]

I have always been a little surprised by the mutual respect and admiration shown between the thoroughly Alabama-bred Drive-By Truckers and the fans of the NYC area.   Unfortunately, the years of suspicion and stereotypes between the South – particularly the deep South – and NYC aren’t totally past tense, even in an age when you can actually get a decent biscuit and sawmill gravy within the five boroughs.  But like certain other of the South’s best exports, New Yorkers seem to get the Truckers, partly because their music acknowledges and, in the best Southern tradition, celebrates many of their homeland’s contradictions and frustrations.  On April Fool’s Day the Truckers opted not to offer up any jokes or fake-outs, but drilled through a powerful set that showcased many songs from their brand-new The Big To-Do and a survey of their earlier classics like the heavy-hitters toward the end of the set, “Hell No, I Ain’t Happy,” “Lookout Mountain” and “Let There Be Rock”.  Despite Webster Hall’s “curfew” in order to start the venue’s dance party, the band played for over two hours with few breaks in between songs.  NYC may be a long way from Muscle Shoals, but tonight, everyone fell under the sway of this timeless act’s Southern charm.

I recorded this set with a four-microphone rig clamped to the balcony immediately to the right of the soundboard cage, with the two sets of mics at varied heights to capture both direct and ambient sound.   I am extremely happy with the results, and hope you are, too!  Enjoy!

Oneida: March 19, 2010 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads

On a night when most of their contemporaries and colleagues were 1000 miles away in Austin Texas, Oneida returned to their roots and played a show the likes of which their fans have never seen. It was 13 years ago when Oneida played its earliest gigs at the Knitting Factory’s prior location on Leonard Street. While the personnel has shifted, Oneida has always been capable of literally stretching the boundaries of their indescribable music to unimagined lengths. On Friday night at Knitting Factory’s new Metropolitan Avenue location, there were two distinct portions of this show where Oneida fans were shaking their heads with knowing grins — the powerful opening “Ghost in the Room” (sans vocals) flowed into a freeform jam in the key of B that last for twenty-nine minutes, but never lost its intensity. While the improvisation contained quiet moments, melodic sections and times of sheer fury, the band’s commitment never wavered. Its that unparalleled musical stamina that was again on display during the set’s closer. “Sheets of Easter” has had longer versions, but at over eight minutes, the machine-like repetition of the “light” riff was nevertheless as dizzying and mystifying as ever.

We recorded this set with the four microphone rig set up on the right corner of the soundboard booth. The microphone configuration was arranged to maximize the sound reception in this rectangular room and I am quite pleased with the excellent results. Enjoy!

We Were Promised Jetpacks: February 15, 2010 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads

A friend recommended to me months ago that I check out We Were Promised Jetpacks when they were opening for The Twilight Sad on their tour last year.  Sadly, I missed that show, but in between, these Scotsmen have garnered some major buzz.  After what by all accounts was a killer performance at Bowery Ballroom, the band headed out to Brooklyn and the lovely new(-ish) Knitting Factory to do it all over again.   In a positive way, WWPJ strike me as a bit of a younger, hungrier, Scottish version of U2, with a style that trends heavily toward the room-shaking rock anthem, all soaring vocals and approachable chords.   Nonetheless, WWPJ aren’t acting the part of mega-rock stars just yet, showing great humility as well as appreciation for their fans, who pumped their fists and sang along to almost every song.   I wouldn’t be surprised if the next time these guys came through, they were the opening slot at MSG for you-know-who…. and deservedly so.

I recorded this set from the same equipment and position as the Bad Veins recording – DPA microphones on a pole at the soundboard and a top-notch stereo soundboard feed provided by Melanie of Knitting Factory.  The sound quality is excellent.  Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: January 16, 2010 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads

“You can’t hear the vocals? … what the f show do you think this is?” yelled Lou Barlow at some clueless complainers. The full throttle sonic guitar onslaught that is a live Dinosaur Jr. show was on display on Saturday at Bowery Ballroom, and those few fans seeking vocals were bound to be disappointed. The vast majority of the crowd was treated to a ninety-minute run through the Dinosaur Jr. catalog that was perhaps a bit too heavy on material from 2009’s Farm, but never let up on the intensity. Any disappointed old school fans were more than satisfied at the two encore selections — first album songs “Repulsion” and the ultra-rare “Mountain Man”.

I recorded this set from the standard balcony rail location, the vantage point pictured above. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

The Sunday night show at Music Hall was also recorded for nyctaper and will be posted soon.

Kurt Vile’s Matador Records debut Childish Prodigy was one of the most underrated albums of 2009. After several years as an underground favorite in Philadelphia and NYC, Kurt’s unique style of sludge-punk and throwback acid-rock is now quite ready for a national stage. In an opening slot for Dinosaur Jr. on Saturday at Bowery, Kurt and his band the Violators played a too-short five-song thirty-minute set of Childish material, highlighted by the appropriately titled “Freak Train” (featuring a saxophone) and the Crazy Horse-like “Monkey”. Kurt Vile returns to NYC for two local dates opening for F’ed Up in February.

We recorded this set from our standard location (pictured above!) at Bowery with the four-microphone rig. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Dirty Projectors: November 22, 2009 Bowery – Flac and MP3 Downloads

December 8, 2009

[photo courtesy of Amanda M. Hatfield]

Acidjack reports:
“The Dirty Projectors are the band you’d get if some Ivy League music majors decided to convert their acappella group into a rock band. Or perhaps, they are, almost, the band we *did* get. If you don’t own Bitte Orca, their excellent album from this year, go out and buy it now, before you don’t own the album that will top all of this year’s “best of” lists.

Experiencing this band live, it is even more striking just how *musical* this band is. Quite frankly, I lack the music theory vocabulary to explain what it is they’re doing up there, but the complexity in their compositions – from the vocal harmonies to the song structures – is evident to even the untutored ear. This night, closing out an almost weeklong run in their home town, saw the Projectors in fine form, playing a nearly 90 minute set (including an acoustic set) that closed out with special guest star David Byrne, as well as an appearance by The Roots. Not since Kid A has a band moved rock music this far forward this quickly, and, like Kid A, challenged the most basic notions about what “rock” music is – and could be.

I recorded this set in the center with my new DPA 4021s. Thanks to the combination of the band’s extremely talented sound engineers, the respectful crowd, and the top-flight equipment, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!”

NYCTaper would like to acknowledge and thank David Longstreth and Domino Records for their kind permission to post this recording.

Dinosaur Jr: November 21, 2009 Terminal 5 – Flac and MP3 Downloads

[photo courtesy of Pat at Pop Tarts blog]

The Dinosaur Jr. set opening for Sonic Youth last week at Terminal 5 was a condensed version of the band’s current show. After opening with a few classic nuggets, the band then performed several songs from the excellent new album Farm, before closing with “Freak Scene” and another early-era shredder, in this case “Gargoyle”. We expect the set to be fleshed out for the two shows that Dinosaur Jr. will play in NYC next month — January 16 at Bowery Ballroom and January 17 at Music Hall of Williamsburg (we’ll be there).

Acidjack recorded this set from the same location at the Sonic Youth recording and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!
