Normally when somebody plays finger-tapping guitar high up the neck the way that Marnie Stern does, the way that’s defined her sound, their style comes with a surfeit of leather and outdated machismo. Marnie Stern records for Pacific Northwest stalwarts Kill Rock Stars, and she’s reclaimed that technique for modern fans who’re as far away from the spandex-and-leather set as you can get. But for the boys down front in ironic headbands, leading between-song chants, there was nothing to worry about. Marnie’s got a sense of humor to go with the chops and the cred. This year’s The Chronicles of Marnia represented the apex-to-date of her career, and Marnie seems poised to take full advantage.

This Lincoln Theatre show, on the kickoff night of the Hopscotch Music Festival, gave Marnie a big-enough stage to let her rip, without compromising the intimacy of her personality or her performance. She may have begun with a hilariously off-color joke about getting older, but Marnie’s sound is as youthful and energetic as it was on her first record, In Advance of the Broken Arm, six years ago.

Marnie wasn’t even the headliner (that went to Kurt Vile), but she brought out a packed house that howled loudly for the favorites and even started a mosh pit. Marnie exudes energy and charisma of a kind that doesn’t require a larger band to do it. After delivering some of Chronicles of Marnia’s strongest numbers, plus older songs, she and the band closed out the show with a long-form rendition of “The Crippled Jazzer”, at more than twice the length of the other songs. Bonus points to bassist Nithin Kalvakota for playing along gamely to the hooker jokes throughout the night!

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones from the ideal location in the venue. While I felt the vocals were a tad high in the house mix at times, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

For the second year in a row, I joined my friends in Raleigh, North Carolina for the Hopscotch Music Festival, which finds top North Carolina-based talent (and the talent from many of North Carolina’s most famous labels) rubbing shoulders with giants of the national and international music scene.

Mikal Cronin happens to be from San Francisco rather than NC, but he’s also one of the hottest acts this year on Durham, NC’s Merge Records for good reason. With his new MCII, Mikal established himself as a master of well-crafted power pop with his best work to date. He’s had exposure to some of the best in the field — including touring as part of Ty Segall’s band over the past year — but Cronin is very much his own man. As one would have to be with two well-regarded albums and a slew of seven inches and other output to their credit.

This show at Raleigh’s Pour House Music Hall proved to be the perfect way for Hopscotch revelers to end their second night. What sets Cronin apart almost immediately is the musicianship of he and his band, as they careened through thirteen tracks split between MCII and his Trouble In Mind debut, Mikal Cronin. Cronin isn’t the type to mug for attention — he set himself off to stage right, decidedly out of the spotlight — but anyone in the room that night couldn’t help but pay attention (even if you can hear people partying in the background of the recording). Of the standout tracks of the night, I was partial to “See It My Way”, streaming below, a perfect burst of a song that echoes predecessors like Sloan, Redd Kross and the band that made what Cronin identified at one point as his favorite album, Nirvana.

I recorded this set with my new Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed by the longtime Pour  House engineer, Jac. As most instruments were running through on-stage amps, this recording favors the audience mics and picks up a bit more crowd, but overall, the recording is excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida: September 8, 2012 Hopscotch Festival Day Show (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Our friends in Oneida were a late but welcome addition to the “Megafaun and Friends” day show at Hopscotch Music Festival, and as usual, nobody knew what to expect in terms of the setlist. Joined by a number of special guests throughout the set (including the ubiquitous man-of-the-festival, the drummer Chris Corsano), Oneida filled the streets of downtown Raleigh, NC with their complex improvisational post-rock. For this show, we were treated to a rendition of the band’s LP Preteen Weaponry, which this site also recorded a live performance of back in June of last year. As we eagerly await their next album, A List of the Burning Mountains, out on November 13, this just-over-half-hour set of another of the band’s classic albums whetted our appetites for what they have in store for us in just under two weeks.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the day’s hardworking sound team, plus Schoeps MK5 omnidirectional microphones. The sound is excellent, after some initial adjustments to the board mix. Enjoy!

Pop. 1280: September 7, 2012 Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Like more than a few bands from our part of the country, NYC’s Pop. 1280 made the trip down to this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina to share the tiny stage at Slim’s with some like-minded North Carolina bands as well as some bad-ass New York contemporaries. On a bill that also featured nyctaper favorites White Hills along with Chapel Hill’s Pipe and Raleigh’s Whatever Brains, Pop. 1280 fell more in line stylistically with the two NC bands, combining a heavy, aggressive punk-influenced sound with synth flourishes that helped identify them more with our neck of the woods. This set covered material from the band’s first two previous Sacred Bones Records releases, 2010’s The Grid and 2012’s The Horror.  The band expects to have another record under their belt some time in 2013, which it would appear some of the “unknown” songs below may be on.

Like the Whatever Brains and Pipe recordings from this show, this set was recorded by NC taper Dave Schwentker with fellow North Carolinian Bryon’s ceiling-installed Countryman B3 omnidirectional mics. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Hiss Golden Messenger: September 7, 2012 Three Lobed/WXDU Day Show, Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

This second day of this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival has to have been one of the best days of music I’ve had all year. Though there were many high points, the main reason was getting the chance to see the Durham, NC recording artist MC Taylor, aka Hiss Golden Messenger, for the first time – and twice in the same day, at that. The first of those was Taylor’s stripped-down acoustic set at the Three Lobed Recordings/WXDU Day Show at King’s Barcade, and it held a singular beauty that was the equal of, but distinct from, the full-band set that HGM played later that night (that recording [HERE]). Taylor began the set with the a cappella “Father Sky”, and it’s a beautiful, brief religious allegory. The next songs were two of my absolute favorites – the band’s most approachable number, “Call Him Daylight” and the new “Red Rose Nantahala”, with its simple refrain of “Oh Lord, let me be happy”. Sung in Taylor’s voice, such a simple line can strike a deep emotional chord; he delivers the line with a canny mix of resignation, pleading, and hope.

Joined at points by Nathan Bowles, Scott Hirsch and Terry Lonergan, who would play in the full band that night, Taylor’s arrangements were much simpler during this day show. Compared to the full band set later that night, this show necessarily placed the emphasis on Taylor’s vocals and, thus, his actual words, and it was absolutely riveting to listen to. Taylor followed “Red Rose Nantahala” with “A Working Man Can’t Make It No Way”, “Bad Debt” from his Bad Debt debut LP, and ended with another stellar country-blues number, “O Little Light”, from his critically acclaimed current album, Poor Moon. He will eventually be putting out a follow-up to Poor Moon that should include “Red Rose Nantahala” as well as “Brother, Do You Know the Road”, which was played at the night set. Until then, settle in with this recording, and let Tyalor bend your ear.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the King’s staff combined with Schoeps MK5 mics in the omnidirectional setting split wide onstage.  The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Back when he was in law school, my college buddy Cory Rayborn decided to put out a 10″ record for the band Bardo Pond, on a new imprint he called Three Lobed Recordings. Cory didn’t have any grand cred-building mission or even a firm direction in mind; he just wanted to give wider exposure to the outsider music he held dear. So after the Bardo Pond release came another, then another, then many others, until the tiny North Carolina label that my friend founded as a hobby suddenly found itself compiling a tenth anniversary vinyl-only box set – which sold out in a matter of days. And at this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival, Three Lobed and the Durham, NC-based WXDU (nominally Duke’s college radio station, but staffed almost completely by locals) brought together an incredible lineup of artists who have released records on Three Lobed, together with other artists who are friends and admirers.

James Jackson Toth, aka Wooden Wand, first joined the Three Lobed family on the label’s 14th release, with the Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice album l’un marquee contre la moissoneuse. Toth has a staggering catalog of releases to his name, including everything from homemade tapes and CD-Rs to the recent deluxe version of his current record Briarwood (which, if you Kickstarter funded enough money, included a USB drive filled with over 100 demos, live recordings, alternate mixes, and outtakes). While Briarwood and Toth’s other most recent material could be best described as country-driven rock, Toth’s work has taken many twists and turns, with deep dives into free jazz, noise and acid folk. Toth has a new album on the way by the name of Blood Oaths of the New Blues, which promises to continue in the extremely accessible (and well-produced) vein of Briarwood. Here at the WXDU/Three Lobed Day Show at Raleigh’s King’s Barcade, we had the pleasure of seeing Toth take the stage to perform a short-but-satisfying set that included several of the new Blood Oaths tunes.

After a heartfelt thank you to Rayborn and his accomplishments with Three Lobed, Toth dug right in with “Mother Midnight”, from his 2006 record Second Attention, a mid tempo rocker that showcases the deep soul in Toth’s voice. You’d never know, from listening, that he is originally from upstate New York. From there, the new material began with the brooding “Southern Colorado Song”, one of several of Toth’s new songs that demonstrates the further refinement to his songwriting even as it stays true to his essential aesthetic.  Perhaps the most moving song of the set was the new “Dungeon of Irons”, whose lyrics were culled by Toth from a compilation of the actual last words of death row prisoners. In Toth’s hands, these scattered musings become a profound statement about mortality and the essential unfairness that plagues both life and death. As this set wound down with the new song “Jhonn Balance” (in tribute to the lead singer of the experimental band Coil), Toth’s day was just beginning; Wooden Wand played Berkeley Cafe down the street later that night.

For this post we are offering both the Three Lobed/WXDU Day Show set that I recorded, as well as a partial recording of the Berkeley Cafe set that was recorded by a local taper Evan Lamb. While the Berkeley recording was done with less complicated equipment, Toth felt that this was the better of the two performances, and this recording adds an extra song not played at the earlier show.

Lambchop: September 8, 2012 Hopscotch Festival, Fletcher Opera Theater (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

While Sunn O))) were blowing minds and eardrums next door in Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium, the Nashville band Lambchop gave this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival a more quiet but no less satisfying valedictory. Responsible for what is widely hailed as a career-defining record this year (Mr. M) Lambchop have little left to prove after a 20-year career, but clearly much left to give. Frontman Kurt Wagner and the band kept the volume in this moderately-sized opera house low for almost their entire set, and a rapt and respectful crowd set the tone for a performance that leaned heavily on Mr. M.  Subtlety and grace are Lambchop’s calling cards, and that was no different on this night, as Wagner and the band gave a classic performance. Having missed their NYC show at the Bell House this spring, I for one am thrilled to have this document as an introduction to the new material in the live setting.

This set was recorded by the North Carolina taper “bryonsos” with 3 Zigma CHI custom American-made microphones. While the low volume in the house and a low-end-heavy mix presented some challenges, after careful editing, this is an excellent recording. Enjoy!
