Dinosaur Jr.: September 19, 2018 White Eagle Hall

Making the best of a bad turn after the cancellation of their tour supporting Mastodon, Dinosaur Jr. took to some roads less traveled, hitting up smaller venues in far-flung cities like Maquoketa, IA and Fort Wayne, IN. Their NYC-area appearances brought them to the small Garcia’s room at the Captiol Theatre in Port Chester and the larger White Eagle Hall in Jersey City. We caught up with them for the latter and were rewarded with more than an hour and a half of shredding from Mascis, Barlow, and Murph. After opening up with “Thumb” from Green Mind, the band launch into four tracks from their latest album Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not (which is an awfully good record for a band going long past thirty years now) followed by a set of Dino-favorites like “Feel the Pain,” “Little Fury Things,” “The Wagon” (with Don Fleming and John Moloney), “Freak Scene,” and so on. For the encore the band is once again joined by John Brannon and Easy Action for some Negative Approach songs, plus the Dinosaur Jr. noisefest “Don’t” and Stooges closer “T.V. Eye.”

Dinosaur Jr.: October 3, 2017 Brooklyn Bowl

From the very outset of Tuesday night’s Dinosaur Jr. show at Brooklyn Bowl — the second of a two night run — it was fairly obvious that the sonic onslaught was in full on mode. Monday’s show was an extraordinary show that we were happy to have attended and recorded, but Tuesday was fully in your face. Any decibel restrictions that the venue may have sought to impose were disregarded as J Mascis’ Marshall guitar stack was well utilized, and the thumping bass of Lou Barlow and Murph’s monster percussion rattled the rib cage. The band also switched up the setlist, so we got some oldies for Bug fans (rare “Budge” and ubiquitous “Freak Scene”), and You’re Living All Over Me diehards (“Little Fury Things”). J and Lou also brought out old friend and Deep Wound bassist Scott Helland to perform one of the first songs the guys ever recorded for that band. We also saw a handful of guests for the “Sub Pop version of The Wagon” including legendary guitarist Don Fleming. And if that wasn’t enough, the show ended with a mini Negative Approach set as singer John Brannon (also of openers Easy Action), drummer Opie Moore and guitarist Harold Richardson joined J and Lou to play two of the seminal Michigan hardcore band’s songs. If we learned anything from this outstanding two-fer of Dinosaur Jr. shows at Brooklyn Bowl, its that this band remains a powerful presence in today’s music. Our still-ringing ears agree.

We recorded this set with the mic stand about midway on the right side of the venue and nyctaper used Schoeps cards while acidjack employed Schoeps hypers. The full sonic blast of this show is faithfully captured in both recordings. Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: October 2, 2017 Brooklyn Bowl (Night One)

The return of the original lineup of Dinosaur Jr. continues to be a good thing for fans, as the band’s vitality has never been stronger. Backed by his usual wall of amps, J. Mascis led the band through the first of two nights at Brooklyn Bowl like the pro that he is, delivering the scorching riffs for which he’s known on classic after classic. Lou Barlow whips his voluminous hair around like a man half his age; if you don’t see his face much these days, his stage presence is impossible to miss. Still on the road for their latest, Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not, the new material slots in with classics like “In A Jar” better than ever. Early in the set, we got both the winning “Lost All Day” and the Barlow-led “Left/Right,” which couldn’t help but sound a bit like a much-heavier Sebadoh. Given the likely generation of the crowd, it’s no shock that a mid-set “Feel the Pain” earned some of the most frenzied reaction, but it was a less-heard track from Where You Been, “Get Me” that was the real treat. The back half of the set continued in strong form, with a memorable “Freak Scene” and a one-two punch of an encore, with the other most popular Where You Been track “Out There” followed by an anarchic cover of The Stooges’ “TV Eye” with John Brannon of Negative Approach (and the night’s openers, Easy Action). The biggest challenge for this band, at least here in Brooklyn, will be topping themselves tonight.

I recorded this set from an “FOB” position along the right-side rail with MBHO microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Any story about Dinosaur Jr. in New York really must start with the shows that didn’t appear on this site — the band’s singular string of seven shows at Bowery Ballroom back in December of 2015 (they’re going to be officially released in some form). There, the band celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of their debut album — an extraordinary feat for almost any act, even more of one for a band who some would argue didn’t hit their commercial potential even during the heyday of their style of music. Joined by an all-star roster of guests every night, J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph proved how much they’ve meant, and continued to mean, to the music that’s been made during their run. That old saw about being defined by the company you keep? There’s a reason for it.

Which brings us to this much more intimate show at Rough Trade NYC, on the heels of the band’s latest tour with fellow late 80s/90s stalwarts Jane’s Addiction. These homecoming nights are always fun, giving a band a chance to unwind in front of friends after a touring slog. The band rewarded us with some first-time playings of their just-released new record, Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not, which could as easily be the mantra of a band whose consistency and quality has been remarkable through lineup changes and a hiatus. If their first shot at “Goin’ Down” was a little rough (in Barlow’s opinion, anyway), the crowd wasn’t bugged by it, as the band showed off the new album tracks alongside many of their best-loved favorites, including their biggest commercial hit, “Feel the Pain.” Of course, the diehards were there for the older classics like “Freak Scene,” “Gargoyle” and “The Lung,” as well as my personal favorite, the night’s closer of “Out There.” If it wasn’t a two-plus hour bonanza of rare tracks and guest stars, this show was closer to what any band really wants to be about — enduring classics played to enduring fans, in a set that proves that their new material is just as vital as the old. After some much-needed rest, I’m sure we’ll see them back at it to tour the new record in full. We’ll be there.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in our usual spot in the venue with an Aeta PSP3 preamp for extra clarity. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

J Mascis: October 17, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

As we’ve noted before, Dinosaur Jr holds a special place in the history of NYCTaper. One of my first recordings for the site and the one that seemed to put us on the blog map was a Dinosaur Jr. show at Irving Plaza in 2007. Over the years, we’ve recorded the band many times, and most recently acidjack and JFCB’s captures of the mega-Dino Jr show at Terminal 5 with a plethora of special guests has been one of the most popular recent offering at the site. So it was only natural that a solo J Mascis show at our favorite venue would be the natural evolution of our relationship with this artist. J recently released what is essentially his second proper solo album Tied To A Star (Sub Pop), and he’s currently on tour to support the record. At Bowery Ballroom, it was just J and several acoustic guitars with a ton of pedals. For the most part, he played it pretty straightforward, while occasionally taking advantage of the looping and sampling capability to jam with himself. The setlist included half of the new album and healthy dose of Dinosaur Jr tracks. We are streaming below our two favorite parts of the show, including a blistering guitar solo that extended the new song “Heal The Star” to beyond six minutes and the very J-like cover of the Mazzy Star classic hit “Fade Into You”. J’s tour picks up again in mid-November when he goes West before touring Europe in December.

hi and lo and I recorded this set in our usual location at Bowery, front of the balcony next to the soundboard. hi and lo employed the MBHO cards on a clamp pointed out in front of the board area while I mounted the Schoeps cards on a stand. I blended the sources fairly evenly, each offering a slightly different locale and microphone style so that the result is a pretty excellent full-bodied capture of this solo acoustic show. Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: December 1, 2012 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Here at NYCTaper, we have a special place in our hearts for Dinosaur Jr. Not only do they make outstanding music and have chops second to none but they have long supported the taping community, making several appearances on this website including one of the first recordings posted here. We were particularly ecstatic when the original lineup of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph reunited in 2005 and have since released three superb albums. In the interim, we have done our best to capture as many of their concerts as we can but none of us grasped the full extent of what we were in for when they announced this celebratory show marking the 25th anniversary of the seminal and influential ‘You’re Living All Over Me‘ album. In addition to playing the disc in its entirety, allusions were made to many other tracks and “special friends” making an appearance. We wound up being clobbered with a setlist and guest lineup worthy of an alt/indie-rock uber fan’s wet dream: Lee Ranaldo and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Frank Black from the Pixies, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Dale Crover from the Melvins, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements, Kyle Spence from Harvey Milk, Kurt Vile, Al Cisneros from Sleep, Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene, Suzanne Thorpe of Mercury Rev, Don Fleming, Dante Ferrando, John Petkovic and Fred Armisen. On a night with more highlights and jaw-dropping performances than one can count, there was a wonderful interplay between all the artists and a realization by the crowd that this concert was to be savored. Thank you J, Lou and Murph for the awesome holiday gift you honored us with. It was an extraordinary way to begin drawing this year to a close.

Thanks to Dinosaur Jr.’s management and the team at Terminal 5, we were given the opportunity to set up and record from the dead-center spot towards the back of the floor. With such an ideal location, acidjack and I ran three distinctly different microphone configurations in an effort to ensure the best possible recording we could make: Milab VM-44 Links (DIN) and AKG C 414 B-XLS’s in both Blumlein and M/S configurations. The results are uniformly excellent so we are offering all three sources for download. We certainly hope you like what you hear as much as we did. Enjoy!

Mike Watt & Friends: May 2, 2012 Le Poisson Rouge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

To paraphrase the late Jerry Garcia, not everybody knows who Mike Watt is, but those who do really appreciate Mike Watt.  Having long been established as an elder statesman of punk, post-punk and alternative rock starting with the seminal Minutemen and the inspired fIREHOSE, his versatility has allowed him to play with many musicians of different stripes and genres.  He’s a bass player’s bass player; the go-to guy who you know will hold down the low-end duties superbly and is not afraid of working hard.  If it doesn’t already, his business card should read, “Have bass, will travel.”  That’s why when people in the know hear that Watt is coming to town, they run and don’t walk to get to the gig.

Initially announced as the NYC launch of his new book, ‘Mike Watt: On and Off Bass‘, and calling the event “Mike Watt & Friends”, word had it that he was also planning to dust off the Hellride East moniker (one of his many projects) and play Stooges tunes with J Mascis and Murph from Dinosaur Jr.  After an interview session with noted music writer Byron Coley, the music kicked off and it was indeed The Stooges from their first two excellent albums.  In his element, clearly enjoying himself and fingers hammering the strings, Watt and Mascis were the only two constant musicians during the set.  At any given time the drummers were rotating between Murph, John Maloney and Sonic Youth‘s Steve Shelley.  SY’s Thurston Moore took a turn or two on vocals as did Don Fleming, John Petkovic (also playing clarinet), Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile, Byron Coley and Noel Ford, the former soundman from the Continental (and current one for Dinosaur Jr.) or so I was told.  It was a whirlwind trying to keep up with the cavalcade of performers who kept jumping on stage.  With the pervasive sense of “what’s next?” in the air and the close proximity of all these great artists, the small Le Poisson Rouge felt more like a party at a friend’s house with a killer band than a concert.  That atmosphere prevailed even more so when the music ended and everyone milled around chatting and drinking while the guest of honor signed copies of his book and greeted all comers with a handshake.  A truly unique evening and, personally, I can’t wait for Mike to pop up here in our city again.  Wondering in just what permutation that will be should prove almost as much fun.

This night at Le Poisson Rouge presented a unique recording opportunity for us.  Rather than having to set up towards the back of the room so as not to be in the way, we were able to park our rig right at the stage lip and nearly dead center.  Recording in this manner makes the separation of the instruments and where they were on stage very distinct.  A monitor was just off to our right so while the vocals aren’t entirely centered, the overall effect is really cool and the next closest thing to being right up front at the show.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!
