We seem to be in the right place at the right time when it comes to Kelli ScarrThe last time she appeared on the NYCtaper website, Kelli had just released her debut album ‘Piece‘.  Nearly two years later and we were fortunate to catch the release show at Joe’s Pub for her sophomore disc, ‘Dangling Teeth‘.  Backing her amazing voice, she had a good number of her group from the Backyard Brunch Session on hand including pianist/vocalist Jo Schornikow, pedal steel player extraordinaire Jonathan Lam, bassist Andrew Southern, flugelhorn player Dan Brantigan, guitarist Scott Metzger, drummer Taylor Floreth, violinist Claudia Chopek and cellist Eleanor Norton.  The set consisted of all the tracks from the wonderful new record and Kelli led her incredible band through the different flavors on it, from rock-tinged country to sultry-voiced chanteuse.  Combining that with the very appreciative crowd and it made for a pretty exceptional evening.  Kelli Scarr is now on tour through the beginning of August.  If she’s playing near you, make a concerted effort to catch her show.  You won’t be disappointed.

On this night, acidjack and I were able to set up nearly dead-center in the terrific sounding Joe’s Pub and we couldn’t have asked for a better location.  This recording is the maiden voyage of my Milab VM-44 Link microphones and the results are excellent.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Special thanks to Kelli Scarr and Joe Rogers at Silence Breaks for making this recording possible, and to the staff at Joe’s Pub for their courtesy and cooperation.

For Kevvie.

Jo Schornikow: June 10, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The Australian singer-songwriter Jo Schornikow is the best-known as the pianist and keyboardist of The Shivers, but she is a lovely singer and performer in her own right (as well as, her website humorously notes, an “internationalist” and  a “nice person”). Schornikow opened this NYCTaper-sponsored show at Mercury Lounge to a crowd that included many of her own fans, who watched reverently as Schornikow performed material from her album First Time, Long Time.  Her songs have an ageless quality to them, made all the better by Schornikow’s easygoing, friendly stage persona. A trained pianist since early childhood, Schornikow is relatively new to the singer-songwriter-guitarist thing, but you wouldn’t know it from this polished, engaging performance. This was Schornikow’s last U.S. performance for a bit as she will be touring the UK for a bit, and she leaves us eager for her return.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardioid microphones in the center of the room by the soundboard, along with a soundboard feed. Other than occasionally hearing the door to the bar open and close, it is a flawless recording. Enjoy!

Kelli Scarr: August 21, 2010 Backyard Brunch Sessions – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

She is perhaps best known as the vocalist for Moby on Wait for Me and his most recent tours, but Kelli Scarr is an accomplished artist in her own right. In the afternoon following the release party for her debut album Piece, Kelli performed a brief set at the fifth installment of the Backyard Brunch series. The band adapted well to the acoustic setting, as Kelli remained seated with an acoustic guitar and bassist Andrew Southern moved to second guitar. The format was also quite an excellent showcase for multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Lam, whose mandolin work was superb, and for Jo Schornikow’s sweet harmonies and keyboards. Kelli’s set was relaxed and fit well within the informal atmosphere, and her humor was particularly required for the persistent fly-over airplanes (slightly audible on the recording). Kelli’s next NYC show will be at Joe’s Pub on Thursday October 7.

This set was recorded with four microphones placed strategically around the band. Other than the airplanes, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
