Guided By Voices: June 18, 2011 Northside Festival, McCarren Park – Streaming Songs + Download Link for Offsite Purchase

There is no doubt that the single most highly anticipated performance at all of this year’s Northside Festival was the McCarren Park performance of Guided By Voices.  Touring with the reunited mid-90s “classic” lineup of the band since last year, frontman Robert Pollard has proven that he hasn’t lost a step – or his ability to guzzle alcohol onstage.  The first time I saw GBV, with this same lineup, he went through a case of beer during a 90-minute set.  Here, Pollard did himself one better, throwing back a bottle of Cuervo as he complimented our neighborhood (lots of bars, after all), mused negatively about Pittsburgh and some of his non-classic lineups, and – oh yeah – performed a monster 40-song set (equaling, thanks to GBV’s short songs, just under 110 minutes).

True to the best years of the “classic lineup,” this set focused on the band’s mid-90s classics Alien Lanes (with “Pimple Zoo,” “Watch Me Jumpstart,” “Striped White Jets” and “Motor Away”, among others) and Bee Thousand (“Tractor Rape Chain,” “Hot Freaks”, “I Am A Scientist,” etc.) among the many other records covered.  For this show, Pollard was his usual freewheeling, unhinged self, swigging his drink and belting out the lyrics to his songs like a rock star 25 years his junior.  GBV were among the first bands to be referred to as “lo-fi” because of Pollard’s use of barely-functional recording equipment on his earlier records, but live, it is evident how tight these songs are, filled with classic hooks and absent filler.  Pollard has long had the rare gift of churning out these nuggets of greatness in vast quantities, and bless him for that –  he has more good songs on one record than most bands have in their careers. (It should be added that he has more good records out than ten good bands are likely to put out in their careers).  As a result, this set never faltered, even through three encores, with Pollard delivering humorous crowd banter with an economy equal to his songwriting and the familiar hits coming and coming, punctuated by between song chants of “GBV! GBV!”  It rarely slowed down, either, except for a tidy acoustic “Awful Bliss,” after which Pollard reminded us, “You’ve gotta do the acoustic songs, man.  That’s what makes a rock concert… it’s like Emerson, Lake and Palmer.”  And then he played another song.  And another.  And another.

When the show finally wrapped up at nightfall with a rocking “Weed King,” we knew we had gotten our money’s worth.  We also knew that of all the “lo-fi” bands we might see during the weekend, they’d have a hell of a time competing with the gold standard, even if the gold standard was born in 1957.  I don’t know whether Pollard thrives because or in spite of all that alcohol, but he does.  And our night, our weekend, our Northside Festival, wouldn’t have been half of what it was without him.

After the previous night’s epic tooth-rattling concert featuring the ‘Eggnog‘, ‘Lysol‘ and ‘Houdini‘ albums, I was wondering what the response would be to this nights playing of ‘Bullhead‘ and ‘Stoner Witch‘.  Two great records that bookend the other three, they are generally lesser known by the masses but equally crucial to the Melvins catalog.  I needn’t have worried as the crowd seemed to build on the intensity that began the night before.  The band’s no nonsense approach didn’t stray from the track listings of the two discs, but their intense live renditions will never be mistaken for the studio versions.  Anything but workman-like, the Melvins imbued new life and twists into these songs.  Among others, this included the set-enders: extended opus, “Boris”, and the night’s closer, “Shevil”, which gave Dale Crover and Coady Willis a jumping off point for a 12 minute drum workout.  Joined by skinsman Vinny Signorelli from Brooklyn-based Unsane, thunder pealed through the venue and left many attendees with their ears pleasantly ringing.

Set up in the dead-center spot on the balcony, the resultant recording is excellent and surprisingly clear considering the sheer volume in the venue; a testament to the engineer’s skills and how good the P.A. is in the Music Hall of Williamsburg.  That said, if you like heavy low-end, this recording is for you.  Enjoy and PLAY IT LOUD!!

My last Melvins show had nothing on the epic 25th anniversary show that we also recorded (both recordings available here), where the band did a full run-through of their most famous album, Houdini, and a gaggle of other songs in a two and a half hour set.  So naturally, I was anxious to see them again at these shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg, where the band promised run-throughs of multiple albums per night.  On this first of the two nights, the band played material from three of their records, the classic Lysol, the somewhat less-known Eggnog, and finally, Houdini.  The venue’s sound system – arguably the best in tri-state area – was a highlight in and of itself as it pumped out the bone-rattling levels of sound from the band.  Unlike the 25th anniversary show, this show was all business, with the band doing a first set consisting of a mix of Eggnog and Lysol tracks that closed with an epic “Sacrifice” without a single second of banter.  This set of longer, sludgier songs set a (relatively) mellow tone to preface the blistering second set, consisting entirely of tracks from Houdini.  By the end of the kickoff track of the second set, “Hag Me,” the floor was a sea of bodies, and it stayed that way through the very last song, “Spread Eagle Beagle,” which closed out, appropriately, with the band’s dual drummers pounding the skins alone onstage.  Once again, the Melvins brought the epic noise… leaving us hungry for night two.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps microphones on the center of the balcony, running into a custom analog preamp to provide more detail and warmth to the recording.  The results are outstanding and reflect the incredible sound in the room.

Queens of the Stone Age: March 25, 2011 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

It’s basic fact that Josh Homme has been one of the principle contributors to the stoner rock handbook and it would’ve made for a very different read without his input.  Starting with his first band, Kyuss, in the early 90’s and continuing through present day with Queens of the Stone Age, he’s been adding chapters to it ever since.  On tour to coincide with the re-release of their long-out-of-print debut album, the crux of these shows was to play it in its entirety; a popular trend that seems to be the case with many bands nowadays.  The sticking point is that the Queen’s self-titled first disc is brilliant, a touchstone of hard rock that many professional reviewers and fans alike have added to “must-have” rosters.  With many of these songs rarely showing up in setlists, it was a treat to hear them performed in a live setting.  In addition to surrounding himself with talented musicians that have great chops, Homme takes to the frontman role well and has a knack for keeping the audience entertained.  The proof being the crowd’s interaction with him, the adulation that teeters on the brink of feverish worship and the many declarations of love from female fans that I witnessed during this sell-out performance.  With devotees like that, I predict this band will have more continued years of success.

Per our usual in this venue, we were set up in the dead-center spot on the first balcony.  Terminal 5 can be tricky when it comes to getting the sound just right, so while the instruments sounded very good and are nicely balanced, the vocals were pretty low in the mix throughout most of the concert.  Nonetheless, the recording is solid and a great snapshot of the show.  Enjoy!

Soulive: March 12, 2011: Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, NY – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

For the past two years now, the funk/jazz trio Soulive have been commandeering the cavernous adult playland Brooklyn Bowl for a series of concerts they dub “Bowlive”. These special shows in their home state of New York (they are originally based in Woodstock) feature memorable performances by the band as well as hordes of special guests; if anything, this year’s “Bowlive II” was even more epic than last year’s outing. This final night of their 10-day run promised to be a special one, and despite the last-minute illness-induced withdrawal of special guest Matisyahu, the band and their guests didn’t let that slow them down as they brought the funk for more than two hours. The tighter first set focused mostly on Soulive’s own material, including a heady rendition of “Doing the 2” jamming into “Too Much”, with the night’s opening act, Nigel Hall, on vocals together with Alicia Chakour. The first set closed with the night’s first surprise, when during their cover of the Meters’ “Just Kissed My Baby”, American Idol winner Taylor Hicks (remember him?) bounded to the stage. Adding backing vocals and harmonica to Hall and Chakour’s vocals, Hicks proved that although he may not be the most commercially successful Idol graduate, he lacks nothing in the talent department.

Set two saw more musical exploration, including a special showcase for the talents of guitarist Eric Krasno on a cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s “Lenny”. Not to be outdone, drummer Alan Evans brought the full force of his kit skills to bear during the night’s most epic number, “One in Seven,” featuring an extended solo in the middle. The set wrapped up with three covers: “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears (turned into straight-up soul number), Aretha Franklin‘s “Rock Steady,” and finally (and appropriately), the encore, “Makin’ My Way Back Home” by Lettuce (only half a cover, given the overlapping players in both acts). Bowling and funk may be natural bedfellows, or they may not be, but either way, we hope there is a Bowlive III in the future.

We recorded this set with a combination of the DPA microphones at close range to capture the PA output, plus AKG large-diaphragm microphones onstage to capture the instrumental detail and broad, spacious stage sound. The results are truly outstanding. Enjoy!

Trey Anastasio Band: February 22, 2011 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Despite how “jambands” seem to invoke the ire of quite a few people, it can’t be ignored that they attract a zealous following.  Bolstered by excellent musicianship and great songwriting, Phish has arguably been at the top of this genre for a long time and are able to sell out nearly every arena-sized (and larger) venue they play in.  That’s why it’s nice when the individual members indulge in their side projects, allowing them to kick back and play the smaller places like they did before becoming a multi-million dollar juggernaut.  I hadn’t been to a Phish concert for the better part of two decades when a few friends literally dragged me to see frontman Trey Anastasio last year.  It turned out to be a stellar gig and good enough to make me dip my toes back into the pond, so to speak.  With his return to Terminal 5 this year, there was no way I was going to miss it and it turned out to be money well spent.  Delving into the extensive catalog of material from his main band and solo jaunts, Trey and company split the performance into acoustic and electric sets, playing a lot of favorites and a few inspired, and some surprising, covers.  Judging by the great time the performers and the crowd were having, reinforced by the multiple sing-alongs during the course of the evening, I can understand why so many folks are continually drawn to them.

We recorded this show from the first balcony, nearly dead-center.  A few other people had the same idea and we had a blast turning the area into a taper’s section.  As with Phish, Trey Anastasio’s sound engineers are top-notch.  The house sound that night was superb and our recording reflects that.  Enjoy!

Mr. Dream: March 4, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The Brooklyn band Mr. Dream gives the lie to the adage about writers, and critics in particular: That those who cannot actually do something become critics instead. In Mr. Dream’s particular case, the former Pitchfork writers Nick Sylvester and Adam Moerder joined with bassist Matt Morello to make the kind of rock music that made them become critics in the first place. Which is to say, rock music from the days when independent rock music wasn’t just the go-to tuneage for car commercials – when it was more often brash, loud, angular – and let’s be honest, had some fucking balls.

This show at Glasslands (and presented by PopGun Booking, who have been putting up one killer lineup after another at the venue recently) celebrated the release of the band’s first full-length, the 33-minute adrenaline burst Trash Hit. The record’s most evident influences are a who’s-who of critical favorites – early Pixies, Nirvana, Shellac, Fugazi, and a decent-sized portion of the SST canon. Stylistically, Mr. Dream’s songs embrace empty air in the manner most often associated with the legendary engineer Steve Albini – with each instrument clearly separated and clear, giving the music a dry, spare, propulsive quality. Joined by current Pitchfork contributor Matt LeMay (who produced three of the songs on Trash Hit) to bolster their guitar assault, the band hurtled through a half-hour of mostly Trash Hit songs whose intensity never flagged. The first notes of “Knuckle Sandwich” kicked in before the house music had even been turned off, and the show was balls-out from there. The musical erudition of the players shows through in their songs, which wear their influences well without being overwhelmed by them; the title track, “Trash Hit”, for example, could have held its own with the Pixies in their Surfer Rosa days. By the time they left the stage after “Unfinished Business,” Mr. Dream didn’t need an encore – they had cemented themselves as yet another band to watch in 2011. The band will be joining Sleigh Bells and CSS for their East Coast tour, with dates in DC, Philly and Boston, and a May 11 show at Webster Hall in NYC (tickets here).

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones mounted on the balcony, combined with an outstanding house mix from the Glasslands engineers. The quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Being the standard-bearers for Southern rock can’t be an easy job and Drive-By Truckers not only do it well, but manage it with a smile on their faces.  Constant touring and marathon concerts that would hospitalize lesser people appear to make this group thrive and get better every time I’ve seen them perform.  Billed as the release show for their new album that had officially hit stores that day, the beautifully dark ‘Go-Go Boots‘, the band played nearly all the tracks from it during the course of this two and a half hour gig.  Both the disc and the night served as somewhat of a tribute to late songwriter/musician (and Patterson Hood family friend) Eddie Hinton who was honored not only with two covers of his songs, but also a beautiful take on the seldom-played “Sandwiches for the Road”.  In addition to a few acoustic spots, DBT filled out the set with tracks from all of their albums.  It made for an impressive night showcasing their outstanding and diverse talents.

Set up in our usual spot next to the soundboard in the balcony, the mix on this night was exceptional.  And in the Bowery Ballroom where it’s usually great, that’s saying something.  The resultant recording is excellent and ranks as one of the best I’ve personally ever pulled.  Enjoy!

Judging by the gig I saw this night at The Rock Shop, it’s no wonder that Brooklyn-based The Forms are sharing stages with some of indie rock’s best acts and garnering quite a bit of attention.  Beginning their show by walking through the crowd with a steel drum and accordion and playing a very unique take on their song, “Knowledge In Hand”, Alex Tween and Matt Walsh treated us to a brilliant set of their intricate rhythms and melodies.  Being the release show for their ‘Derealization‘ disc, they played half of its tracks, a few from previous albums and even some yet-to-be-released nuggets.  With a sound and structure that defies most genres, I suggest that you check these guys out and keep your eye on them.

Thanks to The Forms engineer Jeff Stultz and the house engineer, Shane, we were able to get a feed from the board to compliment our microphones.  With this top-notch mix, the resulting recording is excellent.  Enjoy!

The Giraffes: February 5, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Songs

I make no secret of my admiration for The Giraffes and have been consistently rewarded by them over the past 5+ years with amazing albums and some of the most incredible performances I’ve ever had the privilege to attend.  When I heard a rumor that this show would be lead singer Aaron Lazar’s last with the Brooklyn-based group and had the information confirmed, I was heartbroken.  And I wasn’t the only one.  As a testament to the popularity of this band (one that has been criminally overlooked by the mainstream), I personally received more requests to tape this night than every other show I’ve recorded combined; a few of them from South America and Europe.  Further fears were put to rest when I was assured that guitarist Damien Paris, drummer Andrew Totolos and bassist Jens Carstensen would continue on with The Giraffes.  Blazing through with nary a break, the gents brought out an impressive setlist that including superlative renditions of “Honey Baby Child”, “Sugarbomb” and the rare “On Lovers Lane”, among other gems.  The enthusiastic crowd, packed to the rafters in the sold-out venue, brought their A-game, too [see Todd Kancar’s photo below].  Riddled with stage divers, crowd surfers, people singing every word to every song and enough flashbulbs going off to induce an epileptic seizure, it wasn’t long before the gallons of alcoholic beverages flying through the air had covered nearly every available surface and person.  As I’ve remarked before, it takes an exceptional set of skills to be able to play under these conditions and, as always, these guys rose to the challenge.  We wish Aaron the best in his future endeavors and eagerly anticipate what Damien, Drew and Jens have in store for us with The Giraffes, v.4.0.

As a compliment to the mics, the always magnificent and accommodating house engineers, Kevin and Dan, supplied me with a feed from the board and were joined by guest engineer extraordinaire, Phil, for this set.  Aside from the bedlam unraveling on stage that resulted in the occasional, unavoidable vocal distortion and clipping from microphones being grabbed, dropped and yelled into by attendees, thanks to their first-rate work we have captured an excellent recording.  Enjoy and PLAY IT LOUD!!
