Built to Spill: October 5, 2010 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Samples

In spite of their extensive touring and the considerable number of gigs they’ve played in the NYC area in recent times, it had been a few years since my last Built to Spill concert and the anticipation for this one was awfully high.  Suffice to say, I wasn’t disappointed; the show that the band put on, along with the songs they chose to play, made it worth the wait.  Beginning with the vibrantly melodic “Traces”, the group pulled tracks from most of their albums, threw in a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” and ended with a one-two punch of the often-requested (at least on this night) crowd pleaser “Car” and “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain” from Doug Martsch’s side project, the Halo Benders.  All in all, a wonderful show to reacquaint me with the band after my hiatus.

We taped this show from the dead-center spot on the balcony, right above the soundboard.  Aside from the house mix being a touch bass-heavy in our location, the resultant recording is indicative of the very good to excellent audio that’s typical of this venue and sounds great.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Dirty Projectors: September 11, 2010 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

It’s a tribute to the quality of an artist and its sound engineer, when a band with music and harmonies as intricate as the Dirty Projectors can sound as excellent as they do on this recording.  At Terminal 5 last Saturday, September 11, the Projectors tour in support of the expanded edition of ‘Bitte Orca‘ (due September 27) arrived in NYC.  Even on a night when indie fans had other choices for music, the band’s increasing popularity resulted in a sell-out of this large venue.  The highlights of the set included a superb “Temecula Sunrise” (streaming below), and the beautiful performance of “Two Doves” featuring Angel Deradoorian.

Johnny recorded this set with a four-microphone rig from up in the first balcony at the soundboard.  The AKG’s capture the vocals well, while the DPA’s are excellent for the rich bass presence.  This recording is perhaps the best we’ve ever captured in this venue.  Enjoy!

The Black Keys: July 28, 2010 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Samples

I don’t know how these guys do it.  In little more than a 24-hour period, The Black Keys played three full gigs here in New York City.  One of them, the second of two dates at Central Park’s SummerStage, was right before this performance.  I got tired just watching them.  On top of that, they always aim to please and are consistently one of the best live acts that you will see.  Every time I’ve been to a Black Keys concert, I’ve invariably met (or brought) someone who’s never been to one of their shows and every time, when the lights come up, I see that “whoa!” look on their faces.  It thrills me to no end.

Aside from incorporating a heavy dose of songs from the recent ‘Brothers‘ album, the setlist didn’t vary wildly from their last stint at Terminal 5.  Not to say there weren’t any other changes: since May, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have been bringing Leon Michaels, on keyboards, and Nick Movshon, on bass, out to play “Same Old Thing” and the ‘Brothers‘ material.  Effectively, turning the stalwart duo into a four-piece for the first time in a live setting.  The purists might cry heresy, but it adds a great dimension to their sound.  And judging from the crowd’s reaction, I’m not the only one who thinks so.  I make no secret of my admiration for this band and they’ve certainly earned it.

Thanks to the help of our new pals, Ryan and Frank, we were able to secure the dead-center spot on the balcony directly behind the soundboard.  The recording is excellent and, apart from getting louder as the night progressed, about as good as it gets in this venue.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Peter Wolf Crier: July 15, 2010 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

It’s always a great thing when you show up early enough at a concert to catch the opening acts you’re not familiar with and they wind up impressing you.  Peter Wolf Crier is such a band.  I hadn’t heard of the Peter Pisano and Brian Moen indie/alt-rock duo before but I’ll be keeping track of them.  They remind me a bit of a Greg Markel-era Prime Movers or if Radiohead had started out as a two-piece and Thom Yorke wasn’t so maudlin, they might sound like this.  It doesn’t hurt that Pisano’s voice is a little like Jeff Buckley’s with a shot of testosterone.  Closing with their brilliant take on a Nick Drake song ended the set wonderfully and the folks in attendance that night were treated to another pleasant surprise when Peter joined the Heartless Bastards during their encore.  I’m looking forward to the next time these guys are in town.

We recorded this set from the same spot on the balcony as Heartless Bastards and it came out very good.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

I first saw Heartless Bastards about a year and a half ago when they opened for The Black Keys and was pretty blown away.  Since then, I’ve been waiting (somewhat impatiently, I’ll admit) for them to return to NYC with their indie-garage rock-blues amalgam and headline their own show.  My wish was granted when Erika, Dave, Mark and Jesse played not just one, but two back-to-back concerts at Music Hall of Williamsburg and Bowery Ballroom.  Suffice to say, I wasn’t disappointed: acidjack and I caught the first night at MHoW and by the time the house lights came up, I couldn’t wait to go to the second night.  The setlist included songs culled from their three albums, a short acoustic interlude, violinist Zy Orange Lyn joining the band for a handful of songs and Peter Pisano of Peter Wolf Crier sitting in for the encore’s “Could Be So Happy” (the Peter Wolf Crier and The Builders and the Butchers sets will be coming soon).  While the setlists were essentially the same both nights, there was the surprise addition of “Searching For the Ghost” during the encore at Bowery.  Adding to the milieu, someone in the crowd inflated a few condoms that bounced around the venue (which Jesse makes reference to) for a good part of the show and can be heard occasionally popping throughout the recording.  On a personal note, I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Wennerstrom after one of the gigs and she is an absolute and gracious sweetheart.  Yeah, I’m smitten.

We were in our regular spot on the balcony next to the soundboard and, aside from the occasional rumble of being under an a/c vent and a group that preferred to chat loudly rather than enjoy the music, we came out with an excellent recording.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Diamondsnake: June 17, 2010 Highline Ballroom – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

I first heard about Diamondsnake literally the day before this gig and had my interest piqued due to the inclusion in the lineup of Tomato, the drummer/lead singer from Sound of Urchin, and Moby, well-known for his electronic music.  Rounding out the band is Phil Costello, of Satanicide and Valley Lodge fame, and Dave Hill, also from Valley Lodge.  Even after perusing their website, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect: despite what you’ll hear alluded to during the concert, this was their debut and the first time they had performed in front of a live audience as a group.  With tongue planted firmly in cheek, they will invariably draw comparisons to Spinal Tap and Tenacious D.  The difference being that the members of Diamondsnake can play really well.  And by play really well, I mean play their asses off.  Phil, on lead vocals, was at times channeling Bon Scott and Bruce Dickinson and hitting notes that could shatter glass; he also strapped on a guitar or bass for a few songs.  Tomato spent the show trying to beat his drum kit into a smoldering pile of debris and nearly succeeded.  Dave, alternating between bass and guitar, played the stealth role, amazing the fans with his bass lines and 6-string chops when you least expected it.  And Moby… shredding on the lead guitar: who knew?  Topping it off are very well constructed songs; they just sound great.  Wearing their influences on their collective sleeve, I heard bits of ’70’s hard rock and metal (AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin), ’80’s hair metal/glam (Motley Crue, Poison, Cinderella) and hints of the Bad Brains/Melvins punk-metal crunch.  Add their salacious and sexy dancing girls, the Snake Charmers, into the mix and you had a good, old fashioned rock spectacle.  Not being familiar with their material didn’t matter as the crowd had no problem getting into it.  If you want biting social commentary and topics ripped from the headlines in your music, well, you’re mostly out of luck here.  But if you want to rock out and have fun, then you’re in the right place.  I strongly recommend you check out “D-Snake” if you’re in the mood for a great, loud time.

Our location in the venue was at a corner of the balcony which gave us a commanding view of the house and a direct line of sight to the P.A.  Other than the enthusiastic hollering of some attendees – which testifies to the vibe of the show – the quality and clarity of this recording is very good.  A big thank you to the staff at Highline Ballroom and especially to Diamondsnake for giving us the greenlight to record this awesome concert.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Melvins: June 18, 2010 and May 15, 2009 Webster Hall – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Melvins have now been at it for more than 25 years.  In that time, they inspired many rock legends in the Seattle/Pacific NW scene, Kurt Cobain and Nirvana among them, and have consistently made vital music that rarely if ever crossed paths with the mainstream.  Originally a trio, in recent years they have come out with an awe-inspiring two-drummer attack featuring original drummer Dale Crover and Coady Willis that only magnifies their sludgy personification of the Seattle sound.  The crowd and performance at both of these fantastic shows from Webster Hall – the earlier being one of their mammoth 25th anniversary shows from last year, the more recent one being a shorter set opening for metal gods Isis, who are on their final run before breaking up – spoke to the authenticity of this act.  For once, I attended a Friday night show where every fan stood at rapt attention as this foursome demolished ears and melted faces, including sharing several new songs from their latest, The Bride Screamed Murder.

Of the May 15, 2009 set, Johnny Fried Chicken Boy had this to say:

“This was one of several “25th anniversary” gigs the Melvins performed in the spring of ‘09 that included the album ‘Houdini‘ played in its entirety.  Technically, Buzz “King Buzzo” Osborne has been fronting the band under that moniker a little longer, but who’s counting?  I hadn’t seen the band since ‘97 and am I glad I pulled the trigger on getting tickets.  It was one of those shows that remind you that you’re alive; the energy was phenomenal and spilled over into the moderate pit that broke out.  Having forgotten how amazing these guys can be in a live setting, it brought back memories of this old man’s youth.  They opened with a short set of material from the ‘Mangled Demos from 1983‘ disc that had their first drummer, Mike Dillard, pounding the skins and current, long-time drummer, Dale Crover, on bass.  Trevor Dunn came out later to handle the low-end duties after Dale switched to the drums.  I’ve been to a lot of concerts but this was definitely in my top three of loudest shows I’d seen and I don’t have the memory or time to scratch my head remembering the other two.  It was so loud my clothes were vibrating, as were the keys and loose change in my pockets.  It was so loud my friend had to go sit down because she was getting nauseous.”

These shows were recorded in very different ways.  I recorded the June 2010 set with the DPA microphones mounted to an articulated arm clamped to the balcony, while Johnny recorded the May 2009 set using a lean and mean mobile rig.

Since some people may ask, please note that we were not permitted to record Isis.  Their management made it very clear that the band does not allow audio taping of any kind, and we respect their wishes.  We wish Isis the best in their final shows and future endeavors.

“”It’s not loud enough for ya?” inquired Lou Barlow halfway through Dinosaur Jr.’s set. Whereas the crowd was clamoring for vocals at the Bowery Ballroom show the previous night, this time they were calling for volume. J, Lou and Murph didn’t disappoint; the conversation I had with some of my fellow concertgoers at the end of the evening led me to believe that it was one of the loudest shows some of us had ever been to. Thankfully, the performance overshadowed the decibels. Similar to the prior night’s setlist, they drew heavily from the recent post-reunion discs, Farm and Beyond, the latter of which they didn’t play anything from at Bowery (Murph’s blazing workout on “Been There All The Time” is a personal favorite). Far from ignoring the old stuff, the band also dug some choice nuggets out from their first few albums including, among others, an opening “Bulbs of Passion” into “Budge”, a smoking “Gargoyle”, the encore’s one-two punch of “Kracked” going right into “Sludgefeast” and “Tarpit”, which made this listener’s night.

The venue was only allowing taping in the balcony section, which is less than ideal, but we were able to set up almost dead center. The instruments sound great; vocals are a little low in the mix but you’re not here for the words, are ya? Overall, it sounds very good and I hope you like what you hear as much as we did. Enjoy!”

“Being passingly familiar with Clem Snide when I showed up at the Mercury Lounge on this chilly Tuesday night, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Suffice to say, the show turned out to be quite the treat. In addition to the amazing music and cleverly funny lyrics, frontman Eef Barzelay’s sense of humor and interplay with the audience made for a wonderful experience. Bolstered by Ben Martin on drums and Brendan Fitzpatrick on bass, the music had elements that at times reminded me of Neutral Milk Hotel, Calexico, American Music Club and the Plimsouls, but then the trio would veer off and make the sound their own. Unfortunately, Eef and Co. didn’t play anything off their most recent release, the beautiful and edgy ‘Hungry Bird’, but they did play a few new songs that will hopefully appear on a forthcoming album. Rest assured I will be seeing Clem Snide the next time they come around.

In addition to flying mics, I was once again able to patch into the soundboard thanks to the most excellent house engineer, Kyle. Seemingly a night of equipment gremlins (even Eef had the cable fall out of his microphone after the first song), I had a fresh set of batteries fail on my recorder around 15 minutes into the show. Other than missing some banter and the song introduction between “Let’s Explode” and “Denise” while I changed batteries, the recording is complete. Got all of the music and, thanks to the band and Kyle’s skills, it sounds really good. Enjoy!”

“I’ve intently watched The Giraffes evolve on their albums over the past several years and they just get increasingly better. The same can be said of their live shows and, thankfully, they’ve managed to retain the raw, hungry ferocity that I witnessed the first times I saw them nearly four years ago. It’s no wonder that they convert otherwise mild-mannered citizens into rabid fans after a single concert. Guitarist Damien Paris, drummer Andrew Totolos, bassist Jens Carstensen and lead singer Aaron Lazar cannot be accused of putting on a mundane show. In addition to the brilliant music, it takes some serious talent to proficiently sing, play your instruments and perform interactive vaudeville while being pelted with cups of beer, assorted mystery liquids and a laundry list of other debris including pie filling, Chinese food and Dri-grip. I swear they must practice in their sleep. That being said, I’m still amazed that these guys aren’t huge. Lucky for us they still log quite a few hours in the ‘lil ‘ol Mercury Lounge and bring their unique amalgam of hard rock, punk, surf, Romani folk and progressive melodies to other similarly sized venues. Even at their worst The Giraffes repeatedly remind me of why I make every effort to go see live music. It’s a visceral, tactile experience that the best stereo system in the world will never duplicate. Friday night was no different. Despite the humid, rainy weather, both the group and the attendees were in a great mood and looking for a fun time. Barreling straight through for nearly an hour-and-a-half, the setlist culled songs from almost all of their albums and included three tracks from their yet-to-be-officially-released new album, ‘The Giraffes Ruled’. For a band that always aims to please, the title is quite apropos. The end of the night found all parties drenched in sweat, sticky and covered in lord knows what, but still bearing the same grins that started the evening. At the risk of sounding like a shill, go and buy one or several of their albums. Support a great band. They definitely deserve it and they certainly try very hard to earn it.

In addition to flying mics, I was fortunate enough to get a feed from the soundboard. The most excellent and very accommodating house engineer, Kyle, was kind enough to let me patch in and did an outstanding job mixing the show. In a venue that’s already respected for its fidelity, the sound was just about perfect. Any criticisms you may have about the quality of this recording should be directly solely at me. I’m pretty happy with it and hope you like what you hear as much as we did. Enjoy!”
