Doug Paisley: September 24, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

When an artist who I respect asks me to do something, I usually comply. On a night when I barely arrived in time to record their set at Mercury Lounge (here), Megafaun’s Phil Cook informed me that I should definitely record Doug Paisley’s set. I quickly finished setting up the rig and immediately hit record to capture Doug’s set — and I’m quite happy that I did. While singer-songwriters with sweet voices and narrrative lyrics are all too common, Doug Paisley is clearly a special case — his natural manner and authenticity immediately strikes the listener and draws them in. At Mercury last week, Doug had the tough task of opening the set, on a Saturday night, at a late show. But the crowd quickly responded and for the next 30 thirty minutes were strikingly attentive. Doug’s set consisted of numbers from this two albums on No Quarter Records, including 2010’s Constant Companion. We have chosen to stream “What About Us?”, from his self-titled debut, and a song that also appeared on Mojo Magazine’s “New Harvest” compilation.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Megafaun capture. The volume on stage and in the PA was quite low, so the boosting of levels in post introduced a slight hum into the recording. Otherwise the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Megafaun: September 24, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Megafaun released their third full length album this past week (self-titled), and the reviews are consistently positive while also reporting that the band has taken on a more serious and straightforward approach to their music. On Saturday at Mercury Lounge, the band exhibited this style as they performed three all-business numbers straight out of the gate. We’ve grown accustomed to Megafaun’s entertaining banter and stage mannerisms, but the Mercury set concentrated primarily on the music. Given that the trio (now quartet — a bass has been added to the live set) are superb musicians in their own right, this was not an unwelcome development. It was also not a coincidence that all three opening tracks appear on Megafaun. We have chosen to stream “Get Right”, which seemed to fit particularly with the new full-band sound. Megafaun’s tour continues throughout the Midwest and West coast for the next several weeks.

I recorded this set with the Neumann micrphones supplemented with an excellent soundboard feed, and the quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Joan of Arc: August 10, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Whether you find Joan of Arc frustrating or incredible is likely to come down to your overall view of what rock music is about: If you hold the attitude of “I am here, you must entertain me with classics and catchy tunes”, you are likely to be in the former camp.  You’re also probably that person that customizes every dinner order beyond recognition. A sauce-on-the-sider, if you will. People like you would do well to avoid bands like Joan of Arc, who tend to reward the other type of listener, who enjoys being challenged, who enjoys taking in the breadth of an artist’s vision, and who would rather see something new than something familiar.

Which is not to say that this set by Tim Kinsella’s main project of the past 15 years was not thoroughly entertaining. Kinsella, who made his name in Cap’n Jazz before that band split up (other than their brief reunion last summer that we recorded HERE and HERE), can put on a fierce live show, and keep some wacky stage banter in the mix as well. Eschewing emo-or-whatever-you-call-it tradition, Joan of Arc’s set is heavy on variety – a short burst of almost-pure pop here, a lengthy instrumental there. This set had both, as well as encore songs from another Kinsella side project, Owls. The band’s virtuosity couldn’t be denied – they rocked, time signature or structure-of-the-moment be damned. Songs thrive on dense, angular riffs and plaintive vocals. The resulting recording is a thing of beauty as well – as clear an indication if there ever was one that a small club, excellent sound engineer (Kevin, as usual) and band that knows what they’re doing is an unbeatable combination.

Kevin’s soundboard feed blended perfectly with the Schoeps supercardiod microphones, and the resulting recording is clear, crisp and excellent. Enjoy!

Implodes: August 10, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Implodes, it must be said, aren’t a very “summer-y” band, so it’s a good thing I caught their opening set for Joan of Arc in the dark, air-conditioned confines of Mercury Lounge. Hot on the heels of their debut release on Kranky Records, Black Earth, the band appeared to be eager to move past that new material into even more uncharted musical territory. This set boasted a number of brand-new songs, but the Black Earth material made for a good jumping-off point, as the band opened with that album’s three leadoff tracks. Implodes tunes have a cosmic sweep to them, with airy lead guitar riffs soaring above a foreboding, dense backbeat. Vocals, where used, are sung with the reverb on high, adding to the ghostly, atmospheric quality of the songs. Some songs abandon traditional melodic structure entirely and shift into ambient territory, echoing some of the band Mogwai’s more subtle interludes. That said, Implodes are not toying with the loud-soft dynamic in the way that some other successful post-rock acts do; their songs focus more on sustaining a level of tension throughout, without the cataclysmic release of, say, an Explosions in the Sky tune. Several of the new songs, none of which I knew the titles to, were particularly strong, indicating that the promise of Black Earth is only the beginning for this young band.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed of the usual high-quality house mix from Kevin of Mercury Lounge, coupled with the Schoeps supercardiod microphones. The recording is outstanding. Enjoy!

Lucero: July 23, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Samples

A few years ago I saw a Lucero concert for the first time and was promptly blown away.  With their amalgam of southern rock, alt country and punk, I assumed that seeing them perform in a small bar-type venue in close proximity to a drunken, unruly horde would be where they would truly shine and the pinnacle of seeing them live.  Suffice to say, I got my wish.  When a little bird told me that a band called Nobody’s Darlings booked for a particular Saturday night at Mercury Lounge was, in fact, going to be a “secret” show by Lucero, I grabbed tickets as soon as they went on sale.  Judging by the throng that showed up that night, it obviously didn’t stay a secret.  Being in the midst of the Warped Tour, the band was eager to stretch its collective legs and play a longer and more varied setlist than they had been doing.  The crowd, wanting a good time and obviously as excited to see the band as I was, gave the boys a hero’s welcome.  And Lucero didn’t disappoint.  Including songs from nearly all of their albums, they also threw in a handful of new tracks as a preview of their next disc, slated for release early next year.  Put it all together and the concert was everything I had imagined it would be.

With Lucero’s engineer, Justin, joining always-excellent house engineer, Kevin, at the controls, the sound was perfectly dialed in for the show.  Our mics, flying dead-center in the venue, combined with a soundboard feed has resulted in a superb recording.  I hope you like what you hear as much as I did.  Enjoy!

Heartless Bastards: July 24, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

It’s hard not to like the Heartless Bastards.  They’re one of those bands that never lets you down performance-wise, that’s always on their game, that always gives their fans something special.  This pair of shows at Mercury Lounge (our recording of night 1 here) certainly qualifies as that, as the band played these sets in “acoustic” (but really just sans-drummer) mode, and showed off considerable new material.  The most immediate effect of going drummerless was to focus even more attention on lead vocalist Erika Wennerstrom’s old-soul voice.  The opening lines of one of my Bastards favorites, “Done Got Old” proved she can carry a show without any accompaniment at all, and she remained note-perfect throughout a 90-minute set that was a bit longer than Saturday’s performance.  Most of this group stood respectfully as Erika, Jesse and Mark debuted new numbers like “Skin and Bones,” and the Western-tinged “The Arrow Killed the Beast.”  While the new record will not be acoustic, and some of the material was so new it didn’t even have names, what we heard on this night showed the level of promise we’ve come to expect from this band.  As Johnny mentioned in his review of the Saturday show, this only ups the anticipation for the new record.

I recorded this set from the same spot that Johnny used for the Saturday recording, focusing the sound a bit more toward the perfectly balanced soundboard feed from Kevin at the Mercury Lounge.  As with Saturday’s recording, the sound quality is outstanding.  Enjoy!

Having become a fan of Heartless Bastards only in the past few years, I’ve been treated better by them in that short time than any devotee could ask for.  After catching several of their brilliant concerts, including the MHoW and Bowery gigs last year, we were graced by a pair of acoustic performances at the intimate Mercury Lounge this time around.  Sans a drummer, Erika, Jesse and Mark gave us captivating, pared down renditions of their work including several new songs, a Bob Dylan cover (one of my personal favorites of his) and brought out singer Heidi Johnson for the majority of the set to harmonize on the vocals.  And once again, when the night ended, I found myself already expectant for their next set of shows.  If the new material is an indication of what’s to come on the next Heartless Bastards album, I’m sure to find myself even more impatient in the interim.

As a compliment to our microphones, the most excellent and gracious house engineer, Kevin, gave us a patch out of the soundboard.  Combined with the dead-center location of our mics, the result is a superb recording and indicative of the outstanding sound in this venue.  Enjoy!

The Caribbean: June 5, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

No, there is nothing tropical about The Caribbean. Hailing from Washington, D.C. (not exactly Antigua, by any stretch), this experimental pop trio has been putting out their challenging brand of music since 1999, after the DC bands Townies and one of my personal favorites, Smart Went Crazy, imploded. Their latest record, Discontinued Perfume, continues the band’s tradition of marrying traditional softcore indie rock songwriting to jazz and ambient textures. If you want fist-pumping, major-chord-driven rock, keep moving – The Caribbean aren’t interested in delivering the big hooks and immediate melodies that drive today’s car-commercials-first mainstream. Theirs is a style that rewards repeat listens and a little deep thinking. Lucky then, that we caught them on a very subdued Sunday night at the Mercury Lounge, where we had a chance to fully appreciate the band’s set without distraction. The material from Discontinued Perfume was the focus, and it deservedly stood out, including the closer (and one of the catchier songs on the record), “The Clock Tower.”

hi and lo and I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue with Schoeps supercardiod microphones running into an ultraquiet preamp. This is an excellent capture, especially thanks to the use of the high end preamp and the respectful crowd. Enjoy!

John Vanderslice: May 12, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

John Vanderslice has been another steady favorite of this site (one of his performances from back in October appeared in our Top 25 Concert Moments of 2010) and that status is well-earned through his universally strong performances, outstanding songwriting, and engaging rapport with his crowds.  Those qualities were all on display during this recent show at the Mercury Lounge, an epic 90+ minute performance that showed off some stripped-down versions of songs from his 2011 release, White Wilderness, including the brooding “Overcoat” with its boombox accompaniment, streaming below.  As some fans sat onstage (Vanderslice set up extra chairs so some of the more vertically challenged could see), the veteran, together with percussionist Jason Slota, gave an outstanding set filled with classic hits and other highlights.  Vanderslice kept things loose, chatting at times even during songs, and stopping once or twice to fix mistakes.  No less than six guests jointed him onstage at various points, including opener Damien Jurado during the encore, and Ian Bjornstad during “Underneath the Leaves.”  The show ended, in classic Mercury Lounge fashion, with Vanderslice, Slota and Jurado playing four songs unplugged from the center of the floor.  Jurado proclaimed it “the best show of the tour,” and why should we disagree?

hi and lo recorded this set from our usual location in the venue with the Schoeps microphones.  The sound quality is excellent, with the caveat that the four encore songs at the end, being unplugged and in the middle of the floor, are harder to hear and suffer from more crowd noise than the main set. Enjoy!

The Chicago power duo Local H are a bit of a rock n’ roll time capsule.  Although they formed in 1987, the band first hit the mainstream in the the post-Cobain years with their 1996 FM smash “Bound for the Floor”, which couldn’t help but remind alt-rock fans of their departed hero. The album that featured the single, As Good As Dead, generated several more radio classics, including “Eddie Vedder” and “High-Fiving MF”.  Back in those days – when the major labels still controlled all the levers of artistic success – the only upward route was successful radio singles, big debut record, land the followup.  Like a lot of bands in the late 90s, Local H found themselves caught in the drama of the devolution of the record industry, and their followup to As Good As Dead – Pack Up the Cats – languished more as a result of big-label intrigue than of artistic decline.  Unlike many of their peers, Local H didn’t give up, and went on to have a career that has been marked by legendary live shows.  This set at Mercury Lounge, part of a “Singles Tour” celebrating The Island Years, a forthcoming “best-of” of sorts from their 90s output on Island Records, read like a career retrospective, from early songs like “Mayonnaise & Malaise” to the forthcoming single “Cold Matter.”

As to the “time capsule” comment, it was striking, from the band’s earlier material, how different the concerns of artists were in the 90s versus today.  Lyrically, many of these numbers could easily be touchstones of the era from which they came.  Songs that confront issues like the struggle for authenticity, the worry that your shows are being overrun by meatheads (“High Fiving MF”), and the “one-hit wonder” phenomenon seem quaint in today’s car-commercial-driven era, where even one FM radio hit is an unthinkable luxury and most bands are happy to give away their records to fans on bandcamp, let alone worry about what happens to their follow-up on a major label.  Local H may be of an earlier time, but as this show demonstrated, they still have plenty to say.  The night ended with a searing tribute, a cover of TV on the Radio‘s “Wolf Like Me,” in honor of the recently departed Gerard Smith, who died of lung cancer.

Clearly, Local H have some singles left in them.

hi and lo and I recorded this set with a combination of four Schoeps microphones from our usual spot in the venue. Because the band does not permit soundboard recordings, we used only the audience mics, but Kyle’s excellent mix comes through nicely.  There are some rowdier moments of crowd noise, but they only serve to add to the experience.  Enjoy!
