We have already posted our recording of Woods set from this show, so now we’re fortunate to be able to feature the recording of the outstanding set from Quilt at Bowery Ballroom last month. Quilt first came onto our radar a couple of years back when acidjack saw them at Glasslands, and then last year when I caught the band’s set at Baby’s All Right. But neither of those two shows quite prepared us for the quality of the performance on this great Bowery night. Quilt’s new album Held in Splendor (Mexican Summer) was produced by Jarvis from Woods and released in January. The album represents a step-up in terms of the band’s maturity, songwriting and harmonies. In the live setting, Quilt also continues to grow. The Bowery set featured everything from sweet numbers like “Tie Up The Tides” (streaming below) to ferocious jamming vehicles like an extended “Mary Mountain” or the ten-minute version of “Milo” that anchored the set. At this point, things continue to look up for Quilt as their tour with Woods was an unqualified success — but having played 85 shows thus far this year, the band is taking a short well-earned break. We look forward to their impending return.

I recorded this set with the Sennheisers mounted in our standard balcony rail location and mixed with a fine board feed from Bowery legend Kenny. We are very pleased to report that the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

VietNam: May 18, 2013 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The conventional description of the music of VietNam is that its 60s-influenced. But given the long hair, long beards, clothing styles, crowded stage of multi-instrumentalists, and melodic back-beat minor-chord based songs, its pretty clear this band is directly descended from the mid-70s post-hippie movement personified mostly by the Rolling Thunder Revue. As with Rolling Thunder, the stage energy is focused primarily on one enigmatic and magnetic presence, in this case its Michael Gerner who last released a VietNam album in 2007. The surprising return of the band is buoyed by the new album A.merican D.ream (Mexican Summer Records) which like its five-year old predecessor, is a strong album of self-described “apocalyptic street blues”. At Glasslands on Saturday last, the band completed a short tour and the hometown show was both a strong finale to the tour and a reintroduction of VietNam as an excellent live band. The setlist was equally distributed among the new album and the older one, and during the hour-long set we became completely convinced that the band does its predecessors proud.

I recorded this set with our installed Naiant cardioid microphones mixed with an excellent board feed provided by Glasslands superb FOH Josh. The sound quality is superb, enjoy!

Cold Showers: September 20, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Cold Showers come from LA, but their influences hail from less sunny shores. Stylistically, they’re a Manchester band through and through, with a heavy nod to Joy Division in particular. Lead singer Jonathan Weinberg (also drummer of La Sera) anchors the proceedings with his deep baritone, backed by insistent keys and swirling guitars for the full post-punk effect. Opening for The Soft Moon at Glasslands to an already-full venue, Cold Showers dispensed with the bullshit and launched right into “Alight”, which should appear on their forthcoming LP on Dais Records, Love and Regret. By the time “Violent Cries” got going three songs in, the entire crowd was won over. Like the best of the Factory Records bands of yore, Cold Showers take that dark energy and marry it to flawless pop instincts; “In Terms of Pleasure”, in particular, is a memorably well-crafted song, not to mention a killer song title and chorus, and the newly-released single “BC” is right up there with it. This set was brief by design – only six songs – but it whet our appetite for more. If more UK-like weather is needed to inspire this type of music, well, I know a certain borough of NYC where this band could fit right in…

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Soft Moon recording, with Audio Technica 3031 microphones onstage together with a well-balanced soundboard feed. Like the Soft Moon recording, this one is a winner. Enjoy!

Thanks to Cold Showers for permitting us to share this recording. Love and Regret releases on Dais Records next week on October 9.

Purling Hiss: June 11, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

A friend recommended that I get to Bowery Ballroom early on Saturday night as to be there when Purling Hiss played their set opening for Kurt Vile. He called it amazing “guitar freakout” music. While Mike Polizze’s guitar is certainly the center of the band’s sound, Purling Hiss is more of an amalgam of styles — Harvey Milk’s sludgecore, Dinosaur Jr’s post-punk, and Stooges-style Detroit rock among them. The final result is no-nonsense guitar-oriented rock played at high volume, the higher the better. The set at Bowery featured three tracks from their new 6-song EP Lounge Lizards (Mexican Summer Records), due for release today, June 14. Lizards is the most “produced” of their studio releases, which tend toward the raw and lo-fi techniques. We are not sure whether the cleaner production is a step towards more recognition, but with a band whose live set is as impressive as we saw at Bowery last week, that kind of success is inevitable. Purling Hiss is currently on tour in the Northeast, which will carry them to an appearance at Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival from June 24-26.

I recorded this set at our standard balcony rail position with the four microphone rig. Bowery Ballroom has upgraded their soundboard, improving the already-best sounding room in the City. The quality of this recording is superb. Enjoy!
