Purling Hiss: September 8, 2017 Three Lobed / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree (Raleigh, NC)

As longtime members of the Purling Hiss bandwagon, we’re always excited to see this band play live, and even more excited by the big-time reception those live shows usually get. That was the story here at the Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree, where the Hiss set found the room at its most-packed point of the day, and for good reason. Mike Polizze and his current cast of co-conspirators (Ben Leaphart on drums, Pat Hickey on bass) brought the full amount of heat to the King’s stage on this sunny mid-afternoon, kicking off with the classic PH tune “Mercury Retrograde” before venturing into a long-haired rock version of Spacemen 3’s “Walking With Jesus.” It was the best kind of cover, abandoning the melodic, low-tempo Brit-psych of the original to boil the song to its rawest essence. After that, we headed into the deep Hiss catalog for “Run From the City” and “Almost Washed My Hair” (2009 and 2010 respectively) before the band sprung a final goodie, a song so new that it doesn’t yet have a name. What we do know about the song is, not-shockingly, it’s a fusillade of hard-charging guitars and ecstatic vibes. Like most things Purling Hiss, it rocks.

I recorded this set with Evan Lamb’s soundboard feed, together with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss, the scuzz-rock project of Philadelphia-based guitarist/songwriter Mike Polizze, has emerged from his early records’ soup of fuzz with the band’s best-recorded, best album of righteously weird rock n’ roll, appropriately titled Weirdon. We couldn’t have been happier as longtime fans to feature this band as the headliner of our annual unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, where the Hiss gave us thirty minutes of the most badass shredding we saw all weekend. Appropriately enough, we first caught the band opening for fellow Philadelphian Kurt Vile, another artist who has cultivated his early sound into something still-vital but more accessible to the masses.

A set like this shows you another thing, which is that while Weirdon is certainly Polizze’s most complete song cycle yet, it’s as much a triumph of production as evolved songwriting. When you hear a Hiss classic like “Run From the City” next to some of the best new numbers like “Forcefield of Solitude” and “Learning Slowly”, you realize just how much the aesthetics of a recording actually do matter, even in the earbud age. Despite a CMJ-typical truncated set time, Polizze and the band put everything into what they had, with Polizze on his knees bent over his guitar at several points in front of a crowd that, in the best Cake Shop tradition, was practically on top of him. Closing out with the very early PH song “Almost Washed My Hair”, Polizze drew a straight line from then to now. To hear the live version below is to realize that, if you weren’t, you should have been on this bandwagon from day one.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones mounted just in front of the band on the ceiling, plus Clint’s excellent soundboard feed of the house mix. The sound quality makes this likely our best Purling Hiss recording. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss plays more New York dates, including this Wednesday at Death By Audio, and Friday night at 338 Moffat.

Spacin’ & Purling Hiss: September 5, 2014 Hopscotch Music Festival, Tir na Nog, Raleigh, NC (FLAC/MP3/Streaming)

Day two of the Hopscotch Music Festival was one filled with surprises. I started the day with the Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show and its many one-off collaborations, and ended with this last-minute collision between Philadelphia’s twin scuzz-rock juggernauts. Purling Hiss and Spacin‘ are the best kind of kindred spirits, both being offshoots of the band Birds of Maya. That, and each of them crank their amps to eleven and check any and all pretension at the door. The combined band played three of each others’ songs each, including Spacin’s classic cover of MC5’s “American Ruse”. The six songs stretched for a total of forty-five minutes, offering ample opportunities for guitar pyrotechnics from all. If minds hadn’t been blown enough already, the band was joined for the final number, Hiss’ “Almost Washed My Hair”, by Philadelphia harpist Mary Lattimore (fresh from her Three Lobed/WXDU collab with Thurston Moore) and Steve Gunn (similarly on deck after an epic performance with William Tyler and members of Yo La Tengo, which is posted here). If you doubt how a harpist can make her presence felt with four blaring guitars already on stage, well, you ought to get to know Lattimore, who added a layer of musical complexity to the roaring proceedings. If today was the day of collaborations, there couldn’t have been a better way to end it.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Tir Na Nog engineer Brandon plus Audio Technica 3031 microphones back by the board. Unfortunately, my request to place the mics onstage was denied, meaning they were fairly far back in an echo-y room. As our recordings go on this site, the quality is not the best, but the vibe comes through loud and clear. As the band’s own albums hew to a “lo-fi” aesthetic, perhaps in some ways the recording is true to that. With that caveat, enjoy this exceptional performance!

Birds of Maya: September 7, 2013 Paradise of Bachelors / WXYC Day Show, Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

If certain people are to be believed, Birds of Maya is the best rock n’ roll band in Philadelphia. Which, considering how essential that city’s rock tradition has been to the genre in the last few years, is saying a hell of a lot. In recent years, acts like Purling Hiss (the newer vehicle of BoM’s Mike Polizze) and Spacin’ have gotten a lot of the ink, but Birds of Maya is what started it all. After killer sets from fellow Philadelphians Spacin’ and Chris Forsyth earlier in the day at the Paradise of Bachelors / WXYC day show during Hopscotch Music Festival, it was only fitting that the day ended with the BoM mothership blasting us off to 1969 with some epically heavy chooglin’. Rarely bothering with such studio niceties as polished production and carefully laid out song titles, Birds of Maya’s official releases soar on the pure adrenaline of monster riffs made with total commitment and no bad attitudes. Ready to Howl, for example, is a double LP consisting of three songs – “Friday”, “Saturday” and “Sunday”. That’s how they roll.

All of that made BoM an ideal coda to a perfect weekend outdoor show, as the band roared through four epic-length tracks. That old Spinal Tap line about cranking your amps to 11 isn’t, it turns out, a figure of speech — Birds of Maya pushed out enough onstage volume that the amps seethed with fuzz. This set of continuous music brought all the heat of the band’s LPs, with the spontaneity and good vibes of the live setting to boot. Just listen to “E.O.I.”, streaming below, to get an idea of how it felt to see these guys in action.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a soundboard feed. As noted, BoM’s amps were cranked, causing the board feed to distort a little. So, this sounds similar to a Birds of Maya album — loud, fuzzy and raw. It’s a thing of beauty. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss: November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its always an encouraging story when talent, hard work and persistence are rewarded. We have been big fans of Purling Hiss for a couple of years, and we have been convinced since we first saw them in early 2011 at Bowery Ballroom that Mike Polizze’s band was ultimately going to reach a large audience. Mike is an extraordinarily talented guitarist and the band’s ferocious performing style fits with the aggressive garage-punk songs. At Music Hall of Williamsburg last week, we learned before the show that Purling Hiss has signed to the excellent label Drag City Records. We expect a new album to appear in March. At Music Hall some of the newer songs were performed, and while the songcraft remains strong, there is definitely a more melodic tint to the material. Purling Hiss wasted no time in their thirty-five minute opening set and immediately got down to business, transitioning each song into the next. We’re streaming old favorite “Almost Washed My Hair” which was both the finale and the band’s chance to stretch out and shred.

Acidjack and I recorded this set with a combination of four room mics, his Schoeps hyper-cards and my Sennheiser cards and mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound is superb. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss: November 18, 2011 Cameo Gallery – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

There is something completely natural and unassuming about Mike Polizze’s approach to music. He’s recorded under the name Purling Hiss for the last several years, but recently recruited a band to perform live. Purling Hiss is all about no-nonsense guitar-centered hard rock. Polizze is from the Philadelphia school of long-haired guitar, which includes Kurt Vile and Adam Granduciel of The War On Drugs. The common characteristic (besides the hair) is that each of these artists is a fairly mellow and unassuming person off-stage who immediately crank the volume and the energy when the amps are turned on. Last week at Cameo Gallery, we saw Purling Hiss for the first time since they opened for Vile at Bowery last June. This time, the band headlined and performed an outstanding forty-five minute set that never let up. Polizze’s guitar was front and center from the outset and each song provided an opportunity to stretch out and flex the axe. We’re streaming “Passenger Queen”, which switched to overdrive about halfway through the six minute song and provided one of the many Polizze peaks.

I recorded this set with the Neumann’s raised on a pole eight feet high directly in front of the soundboard and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
