Beach Fossils: December 17, 2014 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its comforting to say goodbye to things we love by coming full circle to our earliest experiences. My final show at Glasslands was a wild night from Beach Fossils — a band who’ve played much larger gigs in recent years but who returned to their roots in the final week of the venue. We first saw Beach Fossils at Glasslands as an opener of a four-band bill way back in January of 2010. It was one of their first full band shows ever. Their first career single was “Daydream” and it wasn’t released until February of 2010. That song was performed at the gig five years ago, and that track closed this 2014 set (and its streaming below). In the last five years, the band has released two excellent albums, reached the Billboard Indie charts, sold out Bowery Ballroom and reached several other milestones. Indeed, Dustin Payseur and his wife (and former Captured Tracks General Manager) Katie Garcia recently started their own label Bayonet Records. On Wednesday, it was clear that although this is a band looking forward, this was a night for looking back. Dustin made multiple references to the venue and the band’s history at Glasslands and Beach Fossils played a lengthy set of material from their entire career, not just the newest album Clash The Truth. This was yet another sellout among Glasslands’ final gigs and the crowd was energetic and very animated — bopping along with each song throughout the entire set. Personally, this was a very appropriate send-off to a venue that we’ve attended for nearly eight years — a fun band on a fun night visiting a memorable past. Goodbye forever Glasslands.

I recorded this set with the installed Naiant Cardioids mixed with an excellent board feed provided by house FOH Chris Madden. There is an intermittent hissing noise, which is the smoke machine onstage audible in both the room mics and the soundboard feed. Otherwise, its a superb recording. Enjoy!

White Lung: September 3, 2014 Glasslands and September 6, 2014 Hopscotch Music Festival – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The band White Lung has been floating around for a few years, garnering positive review more than well-deserved. Their third LP Deep Fantasy (Domino Records) manages to improve on 2012’s Sorry, a considerable feat considering how strong this act was the last time around. Frontwoman Mish Way usually wins plaudits as the band’s special sauce, taking some of the best things we all used to like about Courtney Love (strong voice, personality, pop sensibility, distinctive look) and putting them out there in a more-focused package. But one ought not to lose sight of Kenneth William, without whose guitar playing this excellent band couldn’t be quite where it is, which is clearly a peak. As more than the sum of some quality parts, White Lung straddles that line between accessible punk and non in the best of ways, and the feeling is even better felt live. You don’t have to be a fan of this music, even, to be impressed by the tenacity and poise with which they do it.

Both of the site’s editors caught the band in the same week — first nyctaper in New York at beloved Glasslands, then acidjack as his final performance of the Hopscotch Music Festival in North Carolina, where the band proved that they were a righteous choice for the traditionally-strong spot of final night headliner in one of the festival’s many venues.

The Glasslands set was recorded with our installed Naiant cardioid rig mixed with a superb soundboard feed provided by house FOH Josh. The Hopscotch set was recorded with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from the Hopscotch veteran engineer Wayne of Roanoke, VA, a man whose understanding of this high-ceilinged space deserves plaudits. Both sound excellent. Pick your poison, or do the right thing and download both. Enjoy!

Daytona: July 16, 2014 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Daytona, from Brooklyn but comprised by vets of the Chapel Hill, NC scene, may not have a direct connection to their titular state, but the name still fits. There’s an air of the beach about them, making their self-titled debut album a perfect summer listen. That’s true of the album in particular, whose wide-ranging influences, particularly in the form of Caribbean percussion, have drawn some not-unflattering comparisons to Vampire Weekend. Seeing them live at Glasslands last week, I was given a more rounded impression of their overall sound, which included new songs and a cover that don’t appear on the record. Playing in front of projected images in the pitch black, the band showed that theirs is more than good-time chill out music, even if that’s not the worst thing to be in the middle of summer. I was struck in particular by their cover of the classic song “That’s All Right” by Arthur Crudup (most famously adapted by Elvis Presley), to which vocalist/guitarist Hunter Simpson added a delicate wistfulness. Most importantly, the band carries off live what their very well-produced album (recorded in North Carolina by Ari Picker (Lost In the Trees) and mixed by Matt Boynton (MGMT, Hospitality) is trying to get across, which is an important test of any young band. We look forward to more good things from these guys in the future.

I recorded this set with the installed house recording rig and Josh Thiel’s customarily excellent soundboard mix. The light projector mounted near the mics caused a faint buzzing that can be heard during quiet passages, but other than that flaw, the quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Owen Pallett: May 13, 2014 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Owen Pallett‘s career is roughly analogous to his music itself — multi-layered, complex and abundantly talented. In recent years, he’s concentrated mostly on his arrangement and film score work, which culminated earlier this year in an Oscar nomination for the soundtrack of the film Her. This level of accolade will undoubtedly lead to more well-deserved opportunities for Owen. But his solo career has taken a bit of a back seat over the last four years. Owen’s last album Heartland was released in January of 2010, and his last tour was that Spring, when we experienced an outstanding show at Webster Hall (recording here). But on May 27, Owen Pallett will release his first new album in over four years In Conflict (Domino Records) and on Tuesday his current tour reached Glasslands. Owen has added a percussionist and a bass player to the live band, but as always the focus is completely on his center position where he mans the keyboard, violin and loop petals to create his own orchestra for each song. The set began with some older material before visiting some of the In Conflict songs, including the title track. Mid-set the band took a break, Owen asked for requests and played three tracks alone. The band returned for the balance of the show, a mix of old an new material. We’re streaming the night’s final song, a power version of “Lewis Takes Off His Shirt” that led to extended and vociferous applause. I left a little extra crowd noise at the end of the show for the listener to understand the enthusiasm of the fans. Owen’s tour has moved on to Europe, but we expect he will be back for Summer or Fall dates in NYC.

I recorded this set with our venue-installed Naiant cardioids mixed with an excellent soundboard feed, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Whiskey Bitches: April 8, 2014 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

WB DBA Krenmayer

Whiskey Bitches are a band with a ton of potential who get better every time I see them. At Death By Audio last month the band’s energy and enthusiasm were as strong as ever, but it was the integration of new-ish drummer Eli Lopez into the mix that really shined on this night. His aggressive sense of rhythm fits well with the Bitches musical style and he locked in the beat propelling forward a strong set. The band is currently mixing down an EP for near-future release and the setlist saw those tracks, the two songs from their debut EP, and two news ones in a half-hour set that ended far too quickly. Whiskey Bitches play again on Tuesday at Cameo Gallery in a show presented by NYCTaper.

Acidjack and I recorded this set in the same manner as the Crazy Pills set from this show and the sound quality is equally excellent. Enjoy!

Parlor Walls: April 15, 2014 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Few local musicians are harder working than Alyse Lamb of EULA, a band that has graced almost every stage in Brooklyn (including one of ours) in the past few years. When you watch her perform, you realize that the hard work pays off, not only in terms of her songs, but in her presentation. Lamb knows how to put on a great rock show.

Parlor Walls is a bit of a different beast, a stripped-down duo that finds Lamb joined with Chris Mulligan, who mans the drums and keys at the same time. Parlor Walls’ sound is darker and more atmospheric than EULA’s amped-up pop-punk, though Lamb can’t resist those garagey riffs 100 percent of the time. This night at Glasslands was only the band’s second show, but true to form, Lamb and Mulligan had these songs ready for prime time. Among my favorites were the one-two punch of the intro songs, “Animal”, which jammed straight into “Mississippi”, as well as the hard-edged, discordant closer, “Birthday”. While we’re still EULA fans, Parlor Walls is a great way to get to know Lamb’s darker side. Expect more shows from them (and EULA) in the spring and summer around Brooklyn.

I recorded this set with the flawless house mix of Glasslands head engineer Josh Thiel, combined with our installed Naiant X-R cardiod microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Crazy Pills DBA 4-8-14
[iphone photo by nyctaper]

When we put together a showcase for Death By Audio for last Tuesday, I was pretty excited going into the night. We had four excellent bands and although I’d never seen Crazy Pills live, their album had been on constant play for the last few weeks. When the show was a resounding success far beyond our expectations, it was in large part because many of the attendees already understood what we learned that night — that Crazy Pills has a infectious and kinetic stage energy that engaged the entire room from the start to the end of their forty minute set. The band is a trio fronted by Amanda B on guitar and vocals, Eddie from pow wow! on bass and Jim from Clouder on drums. The band’s debut album Restless is a mix of rockabilly, garage, brit invasion and power pop and it raves from start to finish. Their 9-song set contained seven tracks from the album, one new one and a fairly obscure cover. As with most of the crowd, we couldn’t keep from moving our feet throughout the set, and chuckling along with the witty and sometimes blue humor of the banter. Suffice to say that Crazy Pills are now on our must-see list, and that’s a good thing for us and our readers. They have several upcoming local dates, including a show at Grand Victory on May 2.

Acidjack and I recorded this set with his Naiant Omnis mounted to the ceiling about 20 feet from the stage and mixed with a fine board feed provided by DBA’s indefatigable leader Edan. The recording has all of the energy from the show with clear instrumentation and vocals and we’re extremely pleased with the quality. Enjoy!

Doug Gillard: April 8, 2014 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Doug Gillard has had one of those rare long, consistently excellent careers that most musicians would die for. Though the native Ohioan may be best known for his affiliation with the state’s godfathers of indie, Guided by Voices, Doug has a longstanding body of solo work to his credit, as well as stints with many other bands, including his current status as lead guitarist of Nada Surf. On this Tuesday night at Glasslands, Gillard was celebrating the release of the latest of those efforts, Parade On, a record that gives Gillard a chance to show off his guitar skills on his own songs, which, not surprisingly, are filled with excellent hooks.

Having previewed some of this material earlier in the month at Cake Shop, Gillard and his band were in fine form as they showed off new songs from Parade On alongside older Gillard songs like “Me & the Wind” and “Drip-Nose Boy”. For a special treat, Gillard closed the set with one of Doug’s earlier songs “I Am A Tree”, first performed by his band Gem, and later, Guided by Voices. Doug will be back in town opening for Guided by Voices at Bowery Ballroom in May. Hope you got your tickets, as that show is already sold out. Luckily, Doug conducted a raffle for a few at the show, so if you were here, you still might get lucky!

I recorded this set with our installed microphones in the venue and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Axxa / Abraxas: March 21, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

April 2, 2014
By

IMG_7010

The Brooklyn band Axxa / Abraxas, like many of their Captured Tracks forebears, began in a bedroom. In this case, the bedroom of Atlanta native Ben Asbury, who drew influences near his hometown as well as his current home to create his self-titled debut. That record, produced by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods, owes Taveniere’s main project an obvious debt, from the jangly guitars to a Jeremy Earl-style high falsetto vocal on some songs. What’s missed there, but more evident live, is the free-flowing style of the Elephant 6 collective from nearby Athens, Georgia, whose members are as legendary for their live shows as for their far-out styles. Bringing out these tunes live at Baby’s All Right must’ve been no easy task for Asbury and his bandmates, as the record’s slick production style doesn’t necessarily tell all of the band’s story. What you find out in the live setting is that the core of this music is Asbury’s skill at the axe; at age 23, he’s dropping some serious solos. Axxa / Abraxas feels more like a Brooklyn band at the start of their career than the polished crew you hear on the LP, and in many ways, that’s a good thing. One of this band’s greatest assets is youthful exuberance, and you could feel that in the room in a way you can’t on an album. You get the sense that, with more time with this material under their belt, it’ll only get better. Asbury’s best days are yet to come, and it’s going to be a great ride.

I recorded this set with the digital multitrack system at Baby’s All Right, set up by engineer David Lefcourt, together with an onstage pair of Naiant X-X omnidirectional microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

BOYTOY: February 24, 2014 Shea Stadium – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band BOYTOY only has some scattered bandcamp tracks to their name, but don’t expect their anonymity to last. Leading off a four-band bill anywhere isn’t easy, but BOYTOY grabbed our attention immediately at Shea Stadium on this Friday night, with a wide-ranging brand of rock n’ roll delivered with a poise that belies their limited output. Their style ranged from the bratty pop-punk of “Bad Brain” to the more dense, shoegazey stylings we saw at the end of the set with “Blazed”, which recalled early Lush. Vocalist Saara Untracht-Oakner shows consistency even as the song styles change, and bandmates Glenn Van Dyke (guitar) and Matthew Gregory aka Matty Beans (drums) are right there with her, churning out one song after another that demands repeat listens. We enjoyed it so much that we are offering the entire set for stream, as well as the traditional FLAC and MP3 downloads, below. An EP is expected in late spring; keep an eye out on the band’s bandcamp page for more info.

As with the sets posted from Big Ups and Slothrust, this set was recorded in full digital multitrack provided by the Shea Stadium team, combined with a pair of my Naiant audience mics. We’d encourage you to check out Shea’s site for their own version of this show (coming soon) as well those of hundreds of other bands.
