Herbcraft: November 13, 2016 Trans-Pecos

The first time I saw Herbcraft, I had no idea who they were, had barely gotten set up, and had no idea what to expect. Two years later, I can say that that show by the Portland, Maine band remains one of the true gems of my entire recording “career,” and one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve ever come across from a live band period, let alone an opener. The band’s fluid, almost entirely improvisational sets are a thing of cosmic beauty, taking you to that comfortable yet foreign place where your mind and music unite. This set at Trans-Pecos, opening for MV & EE, continued in that vein, as the band played an extended thirty minute improv that even they couldn’t give a name to. This afternoon set required neither fancy lights nor the cover of darkness to take us back to that place, to open our minds and our imaginations to a better world that is not quite our own. Dig in.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the audience and Naiant X-X omnidirectional microphones split onstage. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

YVETTE: September 29, 2016 Market Hotel

YVETTE owned the stage on this night at Market Hotel, preparing the crowd for HEALTH with their enveloping, dark, and percussive sound that seems like it won’t let you go. Since 2013’s Process we’ve seen YVETTE grow and evolve as a band, as they’ve continued to gestate new material before rapt live audiences. Between our Hopscotch encounter with them in 2014 to a Trans-Pecos show in 2015, they’ve continued to develop new and exciting ways to get under our skin, including a couple of new songs on this night that we hadn’t heard before (one so new it lacks a title). Likewise, the Market made sense for this band and the one it followed, with the room’s layout literally narrowing the focus to the lone duo up front, backlit and relentless. Noah Kardos-Fein and drummer Dale Eisinger have always maintained a certain economy to their shows, foregoing most chatter in favor of weaving their set into a continuous flow. It feels like time for a new record, which they’ve continued to work on, especially as Process predates Eisinger’s time in the band. We can’t wait to hear it.

I recorded this set with the mounted AT 4051 cardiods an a flawless soundboard feed from house engineer Jason. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

People of the North: August 10, 2016 Secret Project Robot

Our lovefest with all things Oneida and Oneida-related continued earlier this month when, on the heels of the final Oneida set at Secret Project Robot, we caught People of the North in the same venue. While POTN shares personnel with Oneida (regulars Kid Millions and Bobby Matador, plus Barry London for this set), the band’s vibe is distinct, with an even-more fluid and keyboard-driven approach. The band has a new album, The Caul, on its way from Thrill Jockey, but who knows whether this material is reflective of that, or just the bandmembers’ mind-state at showtime. Whatever the reason, this 45-minute improv was yet another reminder that with this group of musicians, you can always count on an interesting trip.

I recorded this set with a pair of Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Eleven Twenty Nine: July 23, 2016 Trans-Pecos

The beautiful thing about seeing a Tom Carter-related project is you never quite know what you’re going to get, but you know it will be transportive. It could be anything from his trio set with Chris Corsano and Carter Thornton late last year, to his ambient/drone work with Barry Weisblat, to one of his haunting solo guitar sets — whatever you see, you will be glad you did. On this night, we saw one of Carter’s best-loved projects, Eleven Twenty Nine, originally a collaboration with fellow guitarist Marc Orleans which has yielded an impressive album on Northern Spy Records and a followup on Drawing Room Records.

For this special performance at Trans-Pecos, Carter and Orleans were joined by Jimy SeiTang on bass and Rob Smith on drums, both of whom have seen time in our favorites Rhyton. The set consisted of three distinct improvisational pieces, each a rich, engaging tapestry of sound that blended the aesthetics of rock, free jazz and ambient music in the way for which these players have become known. What is an undulating, complex beast of a song, composed improvisationally out of many disciplines becomes a transcendent whole. Witness, for example, the climactic guitar at the end of the first piece, or the subtle, searching quality to the beginning of the last. You can certainly enjoy hearing it happen on a recording, but seeing these guys do their thing live is without parallel.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones up front, Naiant X-X microphones onstage, and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Hans Chew: July 23, 2016 Trans-Pecos

IMG_0888

We’ve been following Hans Chew for a while now, since he first played our CMJ show in 2012. Back then, Hans spent the set behind the piano, playing his boogie-driven tunes like modern madcap Jerry Lee Lewis. By the time Hans showed up for this Trans-Pecos show in 2016, he was preparing to release a stellar new album, Unknown Sire, with our friends Divide By Zero records. But when we talked to Hans before this show, he explained to us that he had been so motivated by reading a recent biography of Neil Young that he decided to take an entirely different approach this time — and that for this show, he had an entire new album to draw from. As a result, Hans played the role of guitar lead this time, and he shared three new jams that take clear inspiration from Young’s most daring guitar efforts. As he led off with the sprawling “Cruikshanks,” we could tell this was a very different Hans Chew indeed, one who reveled in extended guitar solos and longer narratives. If any of the three songs fit most closely with Chew’s previous efforts, it was probably the upbeat, honky-tonk inspired “Open Sea,” which itself clocked in at over six minutes, and led into “Freely,” which began as a midtempo rocker before exploding into a fiery solo at the end. Though we’re thrilled for the upcoming record, one has to hope this latest material doesn’t have to sit in the hopper for too long, either.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones close to the stage, Naiant X-X omnis split wide on stage, and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Horse Lords: July 23, 2016 Trans-Pecos

For most of its nearly ten-year history, this website has been a collaboration, reflecting the individual tastes and contributions of those who contribute to it. In the past two years, it’s hard to overstate the contribution that Eric PH has made to the team, introducing not only a number of great recordings, but a slew of new bands to the mix. Horse Lords, of Baltimore, are one of his very best finds, and since he first saw them in 2015, we’ve been hoping to do something with them directly. The band headlined a stacked bill this past Saturday at Trans-Pecos, which felt like a welcome, air-conditioned respite from the steaming heat outside. But more important than the change in temperature was the change in perspective, as each of the forward-thinking acts on the bill reminded us of how powerful experimental music can be. While too many bands of their ilk toil in obscurity, Horse Lords have received their due of late, in the form of stellar reviews for their latest album, Interventions (released by NYC label Northern Spy).

The band’s heady combination of guitar, bass, drums, and at-times keys, sax, and second percussion isn’t the easiest to describe; it has a tinge of desert blues to it, the controlled chaos of free jazz, the music-school time shifts of math rock and the propulsiveness of, well, rock. The band brought all of that complexity to the stage and didn’t miss a beat, holding our attention through the latest album’s first single, “Truthers” straight through to the album’s centerpiece, “Toward the Omega Point,” at the end. As Eric PH pointed out in his review of the 2015 show, the band members know how to fill the spaces in the music when they need to, but also know when to leave some open air. We were floored by the band’s musicianship, their control, and their ability to craft a setlist that hung together through a diverse range of sounds. For anyone who cares about where music is going next, be sure to put Horse Lords on your list of things to see.

I recorded this set with a set of Schoeps MK22 open cardioids near the front of the room, a pair of Naiant X-X omnis split onstage, and a soundboard feed from the night’s engineer. The sound quality is phenomenal. Enjoy!

Journalism: May 21, 2016 Trans-Pecos

You can’t always be sure that a band that sounds good in the studio — and Journalism sounds great on their debut, Faces — will measure up live. We’re extra-excited to report that Journalism are one of those bands, and then some, and we were grateful to host them at Trans-Pecos on a recent Saturday night. Lead singer/guitarist Kegan Zema is a savvy live performer, one who works to look and act the part, and the crack band of Mike Greene (guitar), Owen Keiter (bass) and Brendan Mehan (drums) has a well-oiled and well-practiced sound. Sound-wise, I hear a little bit of Television and Ride in them, as well as some later younger bands like DIIV and Cloud Nothings. This show led off with a new song, “Passenger,” before taking us through most of Faces. The band saved their best song (so far) for last, the propulsive, engaging “Faces I,” a rather dark take on the business of rock n’ roll itself, especially coming from a young band. In this day and age I wouldn’t disagree with Zema’s cynicism, but for his sake and ours, I hope Journalism keep on finding this ride to be worth it.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones at the stage lip, plus Schoeps MK41V supercardiod mics on the room and a stereo soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Smashing Pumpkins: April 5, 2016 Beacon Theatre – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

[photos by Jill Harrison, full set available here]

Last week, the Smashing Pumpkins came to New York for a three-night run at Beacon Theatre in support of their current “In Plainsong” tour. This tour, billed as an “acoustic-electro evening,” featured a substantial setlist of solo acoustic performances from Billy Corgan, who dug deep into his back catalogue of songs for inspiration. He was joined onstage by the rest of the current touring line-up – original Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Katie Cole, and Sierra Swan on keys/vocals – for a deep dive into songs from the Siamese Dream era.

Outstanding moments from the night included guest vocals from Liz Phair on “Thirty-Three,” hard-rocker “The Spaniards,” and a tribute to David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” that the audience absolutely loved. But what may excite the hardcore Smashing Pumpkins fanbase is seeing the re-appearance of Corgan-penned songs from his past work with bands like Zwan and Hole. This tour indeed revisits and in some cases, seems to reclaim the essence of these songs, laying aside past feuds in honor of the music.

We recorded this show from the third row, dead center using a pair of head-mounted Schoeps MK4v cardioid microphones. Although there were no surprise appearances from original guitarist James Iha as there were in Los Angeles, this show is sure to delight – it sounds incredible. Enjoy!

Steve Gunn: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

April 8, 2016
By

gunn-schwentker

In case you live under a rock, Steve Gunn is a pretty big deal in the independent music world. Along with working with Kurt Vile, he’s released a sprawl of killer records, from his duo work with John Truscinski, to his collaborations with Hiss Golden Messenger, Mike Cooper and the Black Twig Pickers, to his work with GHQ, to his singer/songwriter solo work. There is no version of Steve Gunn that isn’t great, that isn’t able to worm its way into your brain and stick there, and maybe make you think in the process.

Like Bardo Pond, Gunn is another artist that Three Lobed Recordings has been aligned with for a long time, and the fact that Steve would take the stage twice at the Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, in celebration of the label’s sixteenth anniversary, says what you need to know about his commitment right back. If (as it would seem) Gunn will prove to be one of the Three Lobed alumni with the greatest popular appeal, it won’t be because he’s abandoned the spirited, inventive and challenging style of playing that early fans have always cherished. The proof of that lies in this single set from King’s, as Steve closed out the morning portion of the day with just three long songs. Sure, “Old Strange” is a bit easier to hum along to than GHQ’s “Four Trees,” but it’s still fifteen freaking minutes long, as played here, with the lyrics and the chorus almost afterthoughts amidst the guitar work that almost makes you forget there’s just one of him up there. That doesn’t discount one of Gunn’s other most-loved and longest epics, “The Lurker (Extended),” which graced the Not the Spaces You Know, But Between Them boxed set on Three Lobed, and arrived in stunning form here. He closed with “Mr. Franklin,” another relatively uncommon number in his current tour repertoire, and readied himself for the second half of this day, when he would join John Truscinski for their first duo set in several years (that recording coming soon).

You owe it to yourself to hear where Steve is going next — preorder Eyes on the Lines here, and check out the new single “Conditions Wild” on YouTube.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings from the day, with Schoeps MK22 open cardiod microphones onstage, MBHO microphones in the audience, and a multichannel soundboard feed from Justin Perrachon. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

It seems more than apropos that the Twitter handle of the San Diego band Earthless is “@earthlessrips”. ‘Cause that is, indeed, what they’re gonna do when you see them onstage during one of their relatively infrequent East Coast trips. During this run, they hit both Rough Trade NYC and the Mercury Lounge the following night. We caught the latter show, on a late Friday, and it was a doozy. For over an hour the band shredded through just three songs, two of which hailed from their 2013 LP From the Ages. While their records are cult favorites in their own right, the live show is the right place to experience these guys, as Mario Rubalcaba (drums), Isaiah Mitchell (guitar) and Mike Eginton (bass) tearing it up onstage is about as ideal of a fist-pumping, beer-swigging, rock n’ roll moment as you can have with a band that you aren’t embarrassed to like. This is rock music at is elemental, instrumental best, loud, pure and stacked with riffs. Somebody is bound to throw around the term “stoner rock” at some point or another, and who can blame ’em, but this is music that can go with almost any drug (or none at all, of course). After a short break, the band closed this show with a cover (with vocals, no less!) — a true-to-the-original rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady.” It wasn’t the twenty-minute thrashers that came before it, for sure, but the cover was perfect — one last time to let Earthless remind us why they’re a must-see when they’re out this way.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41V microphones and a direct feed of Mercury engineer Alex Beaulieu’s live mix. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
