Purling Hiss: April 23, 2023 Union Pool

June 11, 2023
By

Purling Hiss hit the road for the first time in a while to support their new record on Drag City, Drag On Girard. Last time I saw the ‘Hiss it was a solo Mike Polizze show opening for Dungen. I can’t even remember when that was but oh it’s great to be back. Long before I began contributing here at NYCTaper I followed along with all the excellent recordings especially from the Water on Mars-era. While I would have loved to hear the title track from that one, we got a solid setlist from them closing out their second night at Union Pool, including oldies “Almost Washed My Hair” and “Run From the City.” If you missed Purling Hiss at Union Pool, they’re playing a free show at Rippers on August 25th. Do it!

I recorded this from our usual spot at Union Pool with a feed from the engineer, Jase, who was responsible for the excellent sound all night. And thanks to all the folks for making it one of our favorite venues!

Vapour Theories: June 24, 2021 Sunflower Philly (Philadelphia, PA)

It’s been far too long since we’ve heard from the mighty Bardo Pond. (Though they’ve been quietly reissuing their 90’s albums.) But the Gibbons brothers—John and Michael—have kept busy with their Vapour Theories side project, releasing the aptly-titled Celestial Scuzz last year. It might not come as a surprise that Vapour Theories sounds a lot like Bardo Pond stripped of everything but the guitars.

Last year we caught the brothers opening for Birds of Maya in their hometown Philadelphia, outdoors on a beautiful early Summer day, and here (finally!) is that recording. Besides a little ambient noise from the outdoor setting, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Long Hots: September 7, 2019 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC)

Did you make a mistake and miss Philly’s Long Hots at their two prior Three Lobed / WXDU day show appearances during Hopscotch? Might’ve been an easier ticket than getting into the door at the packed Slim’s this year, where the Hots brought the fire in this seven song set. This show was so slammed I couldn’t even get in the door, but our man Dave Schwentker had it covered with a fine setup. Don’t let that bookstore ad fool you into thinking that this was anything less than what it was: a no-BS guitar slammer that, for those who actually got in the door, was one of the highlights of the entire festival.

Dave recorded this set with Church Audio CA-1 mics mounted on the ceiling, into an Olympus LS-10. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Rosali: September 8, 2017 Three Lobed / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree (Raleigh, NC)

[courtesy of Three Lobed’s Instagram]

It just wouldn’t make sense to have a talent like Rosali Middleman, who performs as Rosali, show up for a Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU Hopscotch day show and NOT do double duty. So after tearing shit up with the Long Hots earlier in the day, Rosali took the stage again to play her own material, including songs from her forthcoming second LP. Her 2016 debut, Out of Love, arrived like a confident tailwind in a year that was a veritable sea of tumult, and it’s worth revisiting it if you missed it then. This full-band set (featuring Nathan Bowles on drums, Paul Sukeena on guitar, and Dan Provenzano on bass) beefed up certain songs like the key Out of Love opener, “Good Life” as well as making a first (for many of us, at least) showing off new songs like “If I Was Your Heart” and “Dead and Gone.”

These Three Lobed / WXDU day shows tend to have a way of revealing themselves, with the internal logic of the order of (often) wildly divergent styles of bands evident only once you’re standing in the room. Such is the case with Rosali’s position near the end of the day. “Rise To Fall” is a new song of hers, and while certainly the emotional and musical highlight of Rosali’s set, it may also have been that for the whole day, as Middleman’s voice soared over the thick zone of guitars. It felt like an affirmation of all that is right about this day, every year, as a band that had started their set with a measured country-folk number was suddenly blowing the doors off the place with a huge rock song. These shows also have a way of veering from the intellectual to the contemplative to the delightfully weird, but somewhere, there’s always the urgent, throbbing heart, and for me, that was this moment. Stay tuned to Rosali’s bandcamp to find out more about the forthcoming album version.

I recorded this set with fellow taper Randy’s ceiling mounted AKG 460s together with the house mix by Kings’ Evan Lamb. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Dean and Britta: December 15, 2016 Philadephia

February 12, 2017

In 2010, Dean and Britta released 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests, a soundtrack for the pop artist’s black and white film clips of his “superstars” that was commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. The selection of subjects vary from the well-known (Lou Reed, Dennis Hopper) to the iconic (Edie Sedgwick, Nico) to the obsure (Paul America, Freddie Herko) but all are connected by their work with Warhol. The album incorporates Wareham/Phillips original compositions, one unreleased Luna track, a lost Velvet Underground cover and several other covers in a project that provides emotionally apposite tributes for these historical figures.

In December of 1966, the Velvet Underground and the Exploding Plastic Inevitable first appeared in concert in Philadelphia at the Y as part of the Philadelphia Art Festival. Many of the subjects of 13 Most Beautiful were in attendance and captured for history via photographs that were displayed at the Y’s 50th anniversary of this pivotal moment in the City’s art and musical history. The ultimate celebration of the half-century anniversary occurred in mid-December with a performance by Dean and Britta of their tribute album.

The set began with a pre-recorded intro of the ambient “Richard Rheem Theme” as the band entered the room. Thereafter, the 13 album was performed in its natural order. This was not however a strictly album-order performance but rather featured in-between song descriptions of the characters and history of the subjects — the funny, sad and often tragic lives of Warhol’s iconic subjects. Dean and Britta clearly have connected personally with this material and the result was a concert of great emotion that is one of my favorite ever performances by the couple.

The recording was captured by Kubacheck from a very advantageous position with his best mobile rig and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Bardo Pond: November 18, 2016 Union Pool

December 14, 2016

[photo by Greg Cristman for BrooklynVegan. Used with permission.]

Despite being from nearby Philly, Bardo Pond don’t make it to New York nearly as often as I would like. Or maybe my version of “often” is too frequent. Either way, the band continue to prove their vitality and consistency into their third decade. This show at Union Pool began with one of their more recent favorites of mine, “Kali Yuga Blues” from Peace on Venus, but spread across the spectrum of the band’s career, from the Lapsed classic “Straw Dog” to several brand-new songs that haven’t made their way onto official releases yet.  Of the new ones, it was my first time hearing, “My Eyes Out,” a heavy, relatively fast-burning scorcher of a tune. It’s equally hard to deny the band’s new more exploratory number, “Moment to Moment,” which closed out this show for fourteen mind-bending minutes. If there was any regret about this show, it was that the show’s tight timetable meant that it couldn’t go on longer. Judging by the band’s appearances this year, they are feeling more artistically vital than ever, and ready to prove it. Hope to see them again soon.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Union Pool engineer Robert (which fades in after about 50 seconds), together with Schoeps MK4V microphones. The only other flaw in the sound is the hiss of the smoke machine, but it’s less a true flaw than “atmospherics.” Overall, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Watery Love: September 9, 2016 Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show, Hopscotch Music Festival, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

September 13, 2016
By

img_1497

“We’ve arrived at the volume plateau of the day” Three Lobed‘s Cory Rayborn said as he introduced the Philly “supergroup” Watery Love, taking the stage at the annual Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show at King’s during Hopscotch Music Festival. Rayborn wasn’t lying–the band came out of the gate with the loud-as-fuck blast of “Ned’s Dreamcatcher” and didn’t let up from there. As we were streaming the show live on Duke University radio station WXDU, the team handling that end of the business had to work overtime to “bleep” vocalist Richie Charles’ (of Richie Records) dirty words back to PG-13. Indeed, this was dirty, cuss-spitting, fire-breathing, bad-ass scuzz rock and it was not to be stopped, by outdoor sunshine or otherwise. But while any group of yahoos can stand up and make noise, what sets Watery Love, and this particular performance, apart is that these guys hang together so well, playing well and turning all of that energy into something deceptively cohesive.

This was a perfect wake-up call on a day with a very wide palette of artists, and regulars Charles and Max Milgram (guitar) had arrived equipped with extra firepower in the form of Purling Hiss‘ Mike Polizze and Ben Leaphart, together with harplist/multi-instrumentalist Mary Lattimore (possibly the day’s MVP, or at least, the person who played with the most different bands) on bass, drums and keys, respectively. Watery Love has been a band since 2008, but their performances, especially outside of Philly, have been sporadic, and their recorded output is equally limited. Seeing them is a treat, and the energy they expect is equal to the moments they inhabit. There were many very, very fine performances on this day, but this might be the only one that had even the people in the back howling with glee like teenagers. Whatever it is these guys have, make sure you try to catch some of it.

I recorded this set with King’s engineer Brad Womack’s house mix, plus an additional soundboard channel, and Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Spacin’: May 28, 2016 Union Pool

Spacin'

As you can tell, we’re big fans of Philadelphia’s Spacin’, the minimalist garage-psych mind-meld of Jason and Eva Killinger. Back in April, we booked the band at Trans-Pecos, where they dug out some tunes from their latest record, Total Freedom, which came out on Richie Records earlier this year. A few weeks later, Spacin’ was back in town to open the Philly-centric Heron Oblivion/Chris Forsyth show at Union Pool to complete that stellar bill. Opening up with their take on MC5’s “American Ruse,” the band follows with “Over Uneasy” and “Titchy” off Total Freedom, and then “Empty Mind,” the leadoff track from Deep Thuds. The band have some upcoming tour dates in the Southeast in July—check here for all dates.

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue, with a board feed from FOH Leah. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Palm: January 29, 2016 Palisades

February 3, 2016
By

IMG_1376

The band Palm bring an impressive amount of music experimentation to the table, especially for a fairly young band. The compatriots, who met at Bard College upstate, but now reside in the independent music hotbed of Philadelphia, claim to be short on formal training, but I’m calling B.S. on that. Or rather, if their ability to produce intricate, jazz-inflected songs filled with unusual, shifting time signatures is something they just came up with on their own, then formal training may as well hang it up. On this packed weekend night at DIY-ish Palisades, the foursome came ready to wow us, playing only one song from their standout 2015 LP Trading Basics, released by Exploding In Sound. So we got the (relatively) hooky “Ankles” from that record, paired with a slew of relatively new or very-new songs, many of which the band themselves don’t have titles for. You could see that at points the members were feeling the songs out among each other, casting glances across the stage, but you wouldn’t have known it without looking at them; this material feels dialed-in and ready for primetime. What Palm are doing certainly has its cultural touchstones — some of the great “math rock” bands of mid-late-90s like Faraquet, Smart Went Crazy, June of 44 and Polvo — but it’s also daring and fresh at a time in “rock” music where the norm is more often party music that keeps a low bar. If the band’s subsequent releases have anything in common with what we heard tonight, or Trading Basics, then we’re going to be impressed by them for a very, very long time.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 open cardiod microphones onstage together with a soundboard feed from Palisades FOH Ariel. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The War on Drugs: October 8, 2015 Radio City Music Hall – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

October 11, 2015

This happened: About a year and seven months ago, in March of 2014, we attended back-to-back performances by The War on Drugs at Bowery Ballroom. Two of us from the site were backstage, where the band had been kind enough to invite us. Frontman Adam Granduciel was surrounded with well-wishers, seeming half-dazed from the adulation. He struck me as an unpretentious and genuinely kind person, nothing like typical “rock stars” of popular lore. Of course, he also wasn’t one yet. What followed a few minutes later was a conversation that has stayed with me since, as the founder of this site got a few minutes to talk to Adam, as he’d been doing since we saw his band take the stage as the opener at places like the Cameo Gallery and the Knitting Factory in Williamsburg. He basically laid out what was about to happen: the band’s popularity would explode, they would be a top draw at festivals around the world, they would be surrounded by new and different types of handlers, they would appear on late night TV shows, and, not far in the future, they would play a huge venue, like Terminal 5. Not to say that represents any unique power of prognostication or insight; to anyone who had watched the band play those shows at Bowery, who had heard Lost In the Dream and its connection to the American rock tradition in the vein of Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, who could feel the energy oozing from the stage, it should have been clear. The person who seemed most surprised, that night, was Granduciel himself.

The album that made it all happen, Lost In the Dream, prompts even bigger questions than its words themselves ask. How good can you be? Is burrowing deep inside yourself until you’ve turned yourself inside out, hurt and insecurities and questions all on display, apt to give you even more anxiety, or free you from it? Granduciel famously struggled through making this record, a long-term personal project on which he recorded the instruments himself. That period found him dealing with bouts of depression, paranoia and self-doubt, which you can hear all over the record. As Granduciel said in one interview, at one point he found himself, 33 years old and alone, realizing music was all he had. Wondering if this body of work would be finished. If it would be enough.

So maybe it’s not surprising that, even after those two very successful performances, Granduciel didn’t quite believe what was about to happen. But in reality, our prediction ended up undershooting the band’s success by a little. Because, after signing to Atlantic Records, ending up in tabloids, playing the Tonight Show, Kimmel, and Letterman (again), and headlining (soon) or high-billing at a slew of festivals, here they were, back in New York City, not at the 3,000 capacity Terminal 5, but at a true institution, Radio City Music Hall, with a capacity more than twice that. And from the opening notes, you knew that all that love and confidence that had come at them over the past 19 months wasn’t misplaced. These broad stages are where Granduciel’s sound belongs, even if his to-this-day humble, honest, everyman persona doesn’t scream for attention the way his peers’ often do. Tonight’s setlist itself was a sign of the band’s own confidence; rather than kick off with the best-known Lost In A Dream stuff, the band led with “Arms Like Boulders” from 2008’s Wagonwheel Blues, probably owned by a fraction of this crowd, followed by “Baby Missiles” from Slave Ambient. Hearing these songs in this setting, with this band, it’s easier to connect the dots from those albums to Lost In the Dream — while the band’s big breakthrough had much more slick production, the roots of that big-tent sound have always been there. From the day Granduciel started this thing, The War On Drugs have been awesome, and they have been big.

Granduciel’s family was in the audience, and what a joy this must have been for them. Judging by the number of shoutouts and dedications, there were quite a few friends and family there to witness this, as there ought to have been. As they always do, The War On Drugs gave this crowd their all for the full 100 minutes, and the setlist proved surprising at a few points. Sure, we got the ecstatic one-two-three of Lost In the Dream’s best songs — “Red Eyes,” “Eyes to the Wind,” and “Under the Pressure” — but that came about mid-set. After a bit more of Lost In the Dream came a new cover we haven’t heard, Ron Wood’s “Mystifies Me,” which paused mid-song for a dedication to drummer Charlie Hall and his wife, Ann. The main set closed on a mellow note, ending with “Lost In the Dream.” Sometimes it seems strange that such melancholy songs have become such crowd-pleasers. But then, it’s not hard to identify with their sentiments, particularly on Lost In the Dream — that search for something better, the suspicion, but not quite resignation, that the best things have passed. You keep your eyes up, you keep going, and you try to miss what is gone without letting it take you over. To me, it’s always been “Under the Pressure,” the album opener, that sums this part of this band’s story up: that iconic keyboard melody, soaring over the lyrics about being under the pressure, trying not to crack. But even in that first, ecstatic “whoo!” at the beginning, you know that this song is about hope. You know the narrator will make it, even he doesn’t sound so sure.

For an encore, we got probably band’s biggest pre-Lost In the Dream tune, “Brothers,” followed by the Wagonwheel Blues number “Buenos Aires Beach” to finish the night. It seems fitting that the set was bookended with songs from an earlier, simpler time in this band’s cycle. From here on out, The War On Drugs’ world will be something else entirely, as major recording artists on a roster that’s played home to bands like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. Whatever comes after Lost In the Dream, the weight of expectations on that record will be felt like never before. We don’t know what it will sound like, but we do know that Granduciel has proven up to the greatness that’ll be asked of him. He deserves this, all of it.

This set was recorded with Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones to maximize rejection of extra noise and focus on the music. The sound quality is excellent for an audience recording in this venue. Enjoy!

The War On Drugs are on their way to the West Coast to play the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, followed by headlining the Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco. Catch them out there.
