American Aquarium: September 12, 2015 Hopscotch Music Festival – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

In keeping with the local-oriented theme of Hopscotch’s main stage on its final night, Raleigh fixtures American Aquarium — who have played every year of the festival — took to their biggest stage here yet and proved why they belonged there. Well-known to followers of the rootsy Americana they’re most known for (the band is named for the line in Wilco’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart”), this band has been slogging it out on tour, especially in the South, for nearly a decade. Their volatile frontman BJ Barham’s songs reflect that grizzled spirit — his first number was about the casualties of rock n’ roll, after all. By some measures, American Aquarium shouldn’t have even been here at all — the band has claimed they were ready to hang it up until their previous record, Burn.Flicker.Die took them to the next level and rescued them from obscurity’s precipice.

So, this year, they released Wolves, which is filled with songs that reflect Barham’s ambivalence about his life choices. Just look at some titles from this set: “Southern Sadness,” “Family Problems,” “The Losing Side of Twenty-Five,” and “Man I’m Supposed To Be” (it’s about how he isn’t that). Plenty of other bands traffic in the whiskey-swilling-Southern-white-guy-blues thing, but American Aquarium, not unlike fellow traveler Patterson Hood, actually sound like they mean it. “Man I’m Supposed To Be” may wear its heart on its sleeve, but it also makes a point that many a married man can identify with. The bottle suffuses this band’s work, and you can’t help but nod at how Barham has started to come to terms with his self-set traps. There’s no need to get clinical to figure out how the lifestyle, and the ways that you both generate and come to terms with the emotions you share with your audience, almost demands that you not stop. Hopscotch founder and former organizer Grayson Haver Currin called Wolves a breakthrough record for the band, and he was absolutely right. So here they are, after playing day shows and bigger and bigger night stages, finally on the festival’s biggest platform. Let’s hope they keep it up, and make their next chapter a bright one.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed together with Audio Technica 4051 microphones. The board feed kicks in about two minutes into the first song. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Flesh Wounds: September 12, 2015 Orange County Social Club Day Show (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

For the second year running, one of my favorite Hopscotch shows has been the Orange County Social Club day show at Kings. And just like last year’s lineup, local Carrboro punk band Flesh Wounds is one of the show’s main draws. With one self-titled LP, a couple tapes, and a 7″ out on Merge, the band is one of North Carolina’s best kept secrets. But Flesh Wounds’ cover has surely been blown, as they toured both as opening act and backing band on Mac McCaughan’s recent solo tour (which we caught back in May at Baby’s All Right). Any proof you need that this band’s vitality extends beyond their home state is right here on this recording. In a breathless twenty minutes in which they barely pause between songs, the band plays from the recent In the Mouth EP on Snot Releases, “Kennel Cough” from their Merge single, and a few new ones. This is one of the bands that will keep me coming back to North Carolina, but I’m hoping I don’t have to wait an entire year to see them again at Hopscotch.

I recorded this set with the mics clamped to a ledge behind the soundboard, combined with a feed from Kings FOH Justin. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!

The Vibekillers: September 12, 2015 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I guess you have to call Raleigh, NC’s The Vibekillers a bar band — their most frequent haunt is, after all, Slim’s in downtown Raleigh, which is a bar. But give a listen to this set, and see that they are so much more than that. And, despite their protestations to the contrary, they make the vibes just fine, thank you. These guys are real players; for example, frontman Chip Robinson hails from the legendary Raleigh band The Backsliders and Skillet Gilmore, the drummer was in Whiskeytown. Hopscotch Music Festival has always respected the local scene, and having this crew kick off the main stage on the festival’s final night was the perfect way to do that. This set consists of well-rendered covers for the most part, including an outstanding version of Dylan’s “I & I” and The Jim Carroll Band’s “The People Who Died.” The festival’s final night had just begun, but the vibe was already right.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Audio Technica 4051 microphones. The sound quality is reflective of being outdoors, but is overall quite good. Enjoy!

Elisa Ambrogio-Ben Chasny-Tashi Dorji: September 11, 2015 WXDU/WXYC/WKNC Day Show (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

With Three Lobed Recordings on a temporary hiatus from their traditional day show with WXDU on the Friday of Hopscotch Festival, WXDU took matters into their own hands and teamed with fellow college radio stations WXYC (UNC-Chapel Hill) and WKNC (N.C. State) to produce a two-stage day show worth of the tradition. Perhaps the centerpiece of these sets was the trio of Elisa Ambrogio (best known for her work in Magik Markers) and Ben Chasny (aka Six Organs of Admittance), who have been touring together, with the guitar improviser Tashi Dorji. The three of them got down to some serious experimental improv that captured the imagination of the crowd (and had a couple of bewildered college students plugging their ears). The sum of this team was clearly more than its parts, combining noise, free verse, and melodic interludes. By the end of this 20 minute burst of inspiration, our only regret was that it couldn’t be longer.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps MK4V microphones you see in the photo below, together with a soundboard feed by the day’s very capable engineer, Justin. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

We’ve already twice caught Elisa Ambrogio this year touring last year’s solo opus, The Immoralist. Each set has been something special—in January she performed as a duo with Nathan Bowles on drums and in April it was a trio with Ben Chasny on guitar and Adam Payne on drums. This set from Raleigh’s Hopscotch Music Festival pairs Chasny on guitar with Bowles on drums and classes things up for the theater setting with Jenifer Gelineau on violin. Besides new arrangements on songs we’ve heard before, this set adds two tracks from The Immoralist that we hadn’t yet heard live, “Mary Perfectly” and “Reservoir,” making it a perfect compliment to the sets from earlier this year.

Ambrogio’s tour on behalf of The Immoralist continues this November. She’ll hit Union Pool on November 6 as part of a monthlong trek to both coasts and some places in between with Mike Donovan’s new outfit, Peacers. Don’t sit this one out: full tour dates are over at Drag City.

I recorded this set with the mics set up right next to board, combined with a feed from the Fletcher’s FOH, Rick. The sound is fantastic. Enjoy!

Godspeed You! Black Emperor shows are always meditative affairs, where you allow the band’s long instrumental sequences to draw you in, slowly, bombarding you with projected images against the backdrop of a black room. It’s an entirely different experience when that backdrop is of limited size, and the dark room is replaced with the downtown plaza of Raleigh, NC, lit by streetlamps and neon signs from Jimmy John’s and the local Marriott. In that environment, how can you concentrate on something like this? Can it resonate?

Perhaps nature provided the best way, in the form of a downpour that blanketed the plaza in the early going, its sheets of rain and gusts driving away the merely-curious until only the die-hards were left. Absent the excess conversations, forced to reckon with whether this show was worth it under the circumstances, those who stayed answered their own question. GSYBE shows are events; their music isn’t for everyone, and they don’t make any effort to make things otherwise. So, as I held onto my mic stand to keep it and the umbrella covering it from blowing over (which you can hear it doing at one point), I thought about the level of commitment this band requires, and how, as was the case when we covered their NYC run in 2011, they are, in fact, always worth it. Even if you can’t ignore that this setting will never be considered ideal.

This was the kickoff headlining set of Hopscotch Music Festival, and as befits GSYBE, it started with a slow drone, not a bang. After the so-called “Hope Drone,” we were were treated to the band’s entire latest album, Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress (my, how these people love punctuation), a four-song sequence the band refers to on setlists as “Behemoth.” Next up came a new number that is as-yet untitled, followed by two classics, “Moya” from the Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada EP and “The Sad Mafioso” from F? A? ?. If the stage was small, the band’s sweep and ambition remained titanic, as evidenced by the soaring guitars of the new number, whose sustained early peak and soaring conclusion felt like a respite from the rain itself. The attentive, soaking crowd clustered around the stage, keeping the between-song cheering polite and minimal, in keeping with the subtlety of the songs’ transitions. Once things came to a head, though, as “The Sad Mafioso” sprinted toward its stormy conclusion, the shouts began, and sustained, until long after the band had disappeared from stage, leaving that little space empty, their sound only a memory in the night’s new void.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones under an umbrella-covered mic stand directly in front of the soundboard. Other than the usual effects of distance and being outdoors, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Matt Northrup: September 5, 2014 Hopscotch Music Festival, Vintage 21, Raleigh, NC – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

Greensboro, NC-based guitarist Matt Northrup comes from the distinctly louder spectrum of folks in the solo guitar field. He has commented before on the fact that people don’t always expect “solo guitarist” to represent quite the wall of sound that his performances tend to create, but I suspect he’s OK with the added mystery. One of the highlights of Hopscotch Music Festival for me is always the chance to catch up on North Carolina talent that I haven’t been exposed to before, and seeing Northrup was high on my list. In the dim and quiet confines of Vintage 21, he more than rewarded all of our interest with a multi-part piece, “The Unwinding”, that hasn’t yet been committed to recorded form. What is clear is that Northrup is one to watch among the latest guitar talents. Don’t miss him.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK41 microphones which provided a little bit of ambiance. The quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

MV & EE are an underground band in the purest sense, the kind of band who self-releases an LP after scads of others have come out on (admittedly obscure) labels and still presses tasty CD-Rs of their best-loved live sets. They exist on exactly that plane you might expect for a Vermont band, doing things their way, happy to earn the love the slow way, through swapped tapes and late-night listening sessions on porches and in basements. Their sound, a sort of far-out experimental folk, is homegrown and not easily replicated. Having seen the band twice this year already, I noticed now more than ever that no two MV & EE sets ever seem quite alike, and Matt Valentine and Erika Elder seem so in tune with one another that no song needs to hew to a single version, either.

This set at the  Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show at King’s during Hopscotch Music Festival was the only one by an outfit that had actually played a night-time festival set (the night before at The Hive), but that didn’t mean MV & EE were willing to dish out the same thing twice. In keeping with the vibe of this show, this set went to the more noisy end of the spectrum, especially on the delicious combo of “Roll On>Mayan Feedback” from this year’s self-released record Alpha Lyrae. Valentine and Elder have been on a bit of a roll lately tour-wise, so they may be off the road for a bit, but check back at their website for all the band’s latest info and releases, including their new seven-inch split with Woods with both bands performing Pink Floyd’s “Green is the Colour”.

Landlady: September 6, 2014 Hometapes / Trekky Records Day Show, Pour House, Hopscotch Music Festival, Raleigh, NC – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Brooklyn’s Landlady is a really good live band, and they’re good in a way that flatters their musical skill as well as drawing a crowd. Where most music has to make a choice between being interesting or mass-appealing, they seem able to do both, to hang in a narrow band that includes acts like Vampire Weekend, TV On the Radio, and The Dirty Projectors. That I pulled those references from the prior decade isn’t unintentional; Landlady feels like the pleasing synthesis of a few different strands of late-aughts rock, created and executed by Adam Schatz and his bandmates since 2010. Schatz has called Landlady’s songs his “big songs”, and the veteran brings a certain big-tent gusto to the songs that makes them distinct from other projects in which he has been involved, like Man Man or Father Figures. It’s as if Schatz — a multi-instrumentalist himself, including saxophone — distilled some of his other project’s textural complexity and general weirdness into something still-complex but more ready and willing to be liked.

That was all in evidence on the final day of the Hopscotch Music Festival, as Raleigh’s Pour House packed in for the Hometapes / Trekky Records day show. Landlady were representing the former, an outfit recently moved to Durham, North Carolina, and made their label proud. It’d be easy not to care about a day show crowd on a festival’s last day, just near the end of a month-long tour. The band had played Hopscotch Thursday, traveled to Richmond, VA on Friday, then back to Raleigh on Saturday because, as Schatz put it, “we like you”. The band treated us like a special crowd, too, giving us a brisk but powerful set that awakened even the most jaded and hungover festivalgoers. Landlady’s music has an at-times tribal quality to it, abetted in part by the use of two drummers, and that gives the music a festive air. Songs rarely stand still, shifting textures and ideas more often in the space of a single number than many bands achieve in entire albums. True to Schatz’s reputation as a showman, the band saved probably the two biggest standout tracks — “Maria” and “Above My Ground” for the end, though “The Globe” would come in a close third. That final number “Above My Ground” gave Schatz a chance to give a mini-speech mid-song in which he ruminated on the impermanence of things before exhorting the audience to sing the song’s one-word refrain — “always”. As Schatz said, the song is about having lost something, and you got the sense that Landlady would genuinely miss us. They are, after all, a band that stands out the most when they have a packed crowd to watch.

Circuit des Yeux makes lacerating, personal music that belongs in a certain kind of place, both spiritually and physically. Haley Fohr is four records in now at age twenty-five, and her latest album,  Overdue, was hailed by the ever-reliable Marc Masters of Pitchfork, along with several others, as her best yet. Fohr’s music is somber and dark, delicate at times, unafraid to be dissonant when it needs to be. The Chicago-based musician has played in and around New York several times, but I had missed my chances. As happened a few times this year, Hopscotch Music Festival let me correct that mistake.

Over time, especially on Overdue, Circuit des Yeux’s compositions have taken on a grander scale, and we saw that in action right off the bat, as Fohr led with a brand new, as-yet-untitled song. Along with another new song and two more Overdue tracks, the set was bookended by “Acarina”, one of three Overdue tracks played. In this setting, it became a slashing, sprawling explosion of distortion that made the original seem almost polite — a gem of a live version. I might venture that the added fury packed into it paired well with Fohr’s mood, as I’ll discuss below.

The truth is that somebody could not have picked a worse venue for Circuit des Yeux, seated alone on a low stage in an Irish bar best suited to party music or cover bands. Despite that I knew several people who came to the venue specifically to see Circuit des Yeux, that couldn’t overcome the fact that this was difficult music being played in a loud bar to a crowd much more indifferent than they ought to have been. This is the kind of scheduling mishap that also led, in part, to the festival’s well-publicized artist blowup across town this same night. To her credit, Fohr didn’t call names or lash out. She leaned into her guitar, hair obscuring the louder side of the room, and sang with an intensity that fought its way through. For me as a fan, what is most striking about this set is just how good it is in recorded form — that is, with the advantage of being able to remove most of the audience from the equation.

That’s all well and good, but to read Circuit des Yeux’s take on this set is to be reminded that a concert is not a one-way event. Granted, unlike an artist’s own show, a festival audience may not have paid to be there specifically to see that artist. But that doesn’t mean that the crowd doesn’t have a responsibility to the performer they are seeing. To be in an audience is to be an active participant in the artist’s experience of the show. An audience can elevate, and an audience can also hurt. Before you bother to finish the rest of this, or click play on the streaming tracks, or do anything else, I would urge you to read Fohr’s piece. No musician — be it one you like, one you dislike, or one you’re indifferent to — deserves to be treated like a performing monkey. An artist owes us to do their part, and we owe them as an audience to do ours. A concert isn’t church, sure, but it is a shared space with a single focal point — the artist. Anything that takes away from that is doing damage: to the artist, to the other fans who paid to be there, and to the whole enterprise of what live music is supposed to be about.

For my part, I found Fohr’s performance compelling and look forward to her next steps. Circuit des Yeux isn’t easy or conventional, and that is part of what has made it a favorite of both critics and the other forward-thinking artists such as Xiu Xiu who have toured with her. This music deserves our continued attention and respect. For those that don’t “get it”, whether that’s the case with this artist or with somebody else, please stay away or shut up. The rest of us are trying to hear.
