The War on Drugs: September 4, 2014 Hopscotch Music Festival, Lincoln Theatre, Raleigh, NC (FLAC/MP3/Streaming)

The Hopscotch Music Festival, held in Raleigh, North Carolina, has made it five years — not quite an eternity in a world of corporate music festivals like SXSW and Lollapalooza, but a rare achievement for an organically grown festival in a “midsize market” that has proven over and over that they are willing to take chances. Hopscotch is the festival willing to put a heavy metal band on its largest, outdoor, downtown stage on its Saturday night, rather than a more accessible mainstream act.  Hopscotch dedicates entire venues, at various times, to genres like experimental noise, ambient, thrash, black metal, and indie hip-hop. It is hosted in a city whose good humor and kindness borders upon unreal, sprawled across a fast-growing downtown, and unlike the best-known festival that attempts to use an entire city’s music venues as part of its sprawl, it opens everything to everyone, not reserving entry to “the big stuff” for the connected and the corporate.

Hopscotch, then, has much in common with The War on Drugs. I’ll make this bold claim now: they are the best rock act who has released an album this year. They didn’t get to that point quickly, or with flash, or with marketing, or even at times with buzz, though we did our best over here at this site. Three years ago, we caught them opening at Bowery Ballroom for Sharon Van Etten, another artist whose acclaim grew slowly on the back of honesty and hard work. This band grew on the back of the validity of their mission, the honesty of their approach, and their hard, hard work. Just like Hopscotch.

Adam Granduciel’s herculean writing and arranging on Lost In the Dream is well documented. He has applied that same intensity to the expanded live show for this tour, which we first caught on back to back dates in March, including the band’s rather hyped cover of “Mind Games”. Not every band’s play for the big time might include a bunch of double-radio-length songs, but not every band is The War on Drugs. What we got here at Raleigh’s Lincoln Theatre was a set that resembled some of what we heard back in March, including the expanded band that includes Jon Natchez on keyboards. A packed and somewhat chatty room got to see the band joined by local music maven Brad Cook of Megafaun on “Ocean” followed by a searing rendition of “Red Eyes” and closing the main set on the album’s title track. The highlight of the encore was another rare cover, Bill Fay’s “I Hear You Calling”, which ended my first night of Hopscotch in exactly the right way. If you don’t see another act this year, go see The War on Drugs, a band whose heart matches their massive sound, bound for the arenas they deserve.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones at the soundboard rather than our preferred spot in Lincoln Theatre that is a bit closer. Due to technical issues a soundboard feed was not available, and there is some enthusiastic audience chatter on this that makes the sound inferior to the two recordings from March, though still quite good. Plenty more Hopscotch recordings will be coming 0ver the next month or so as well. Keep your eyes on this space.

The Hopscotch Music Festival is prized by critics for its diversity, and the Raleigh, NC band Chatham County Line can certainly count toward that determination. At a festival featuring everything from doom and black metal to the latest indie darlings, from John Cale to noise collagists like Merzbow, nothing is too far afield to be included, so long as the music is good. Bluegrass music wasn’t over-represented at the festival by any means, but CCL were there to give you your fix, playing a modernized version of the style that keeps its history firmly in mind. Playing in the traditional stage setup clustered around a single microphone, the band covered a wide range of their catalog, as well as previews of their recently-completed sixth album, which should drop later this year.

North Carolina-based taper Larry Tucker recorded this set with a soundboard feed and American-made Peluso CEMC6 cardiod microphones. We’d like to thank him for his generosity in sharing this excellent recording. Enjoy!

This year’s Hopscotch Music Festival put an exclamation point on the return of beloved Durham, NC based heavy math-rockers Drug Yacht. Friend of the site David Schwentker was there to capture the band in all their glory at the festival’s favorite dive, Slim’s, and the Yacht didn’t disappoint. Though the band began in 1997, they had played barely a dozen shows, as the members floated amongst a number of other well-liked local projects. They reunited to play shows again in 2012 and followed that up with this year’s slick new EP, Way Up Firm and High. Starting with the breakneck intensity of the EP’s “Feel The Teal”, the trio didn’t slow down for 34 hard-charging, sweaty minutes. Here’s to hoping these guys are back for good!

This set was recorded by Mr. Schwentker with Church Audio CA-1 microphones mounted in the ceiling by yours truly and Dan Schram. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: September 7, 2013 Paradise of Bachelors / WXYC Day Show, Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC)

Chris Forsyth has a body of work that’s deeper and more diverse than that of most artists twice his age. But he may have produced his finest work to date with his first release for Paradise of BachelorsSolar Motel. which comes out at the end of this month. Joined by a group of players (Paul Sukeena on guitar, Peter Kerlin on bass and Steven Urgo on drums) that he calls the Solar Motel Band, his new psychedelic art-rock outfit, Forsyth gave the assembled crowd for the Paradise of Bachelors / WXYC day show the great privilege of playing the new record straight through. The four-movement record has a power and narrative structure all its own, suggesting that even with his many accomplishments as a guitarist, Forsyth may be even better in the role of bandleader.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones from the exact spot you can see in the photo above. Put the headphones on and let Forsyth and the Solar Motel Band take you on a journey you won’t soon forget. Enjoy!

About two or three minutes into “Beauty Draws the Seed”, one of three compositions Tom Carter played at this year’s Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU Day Show during Hopscotch Music Festival, it was clear that this would be a session that would be unforgettable. I have seen Tom play several times, but this afternoon show was special — a day that every artist invited showed up with their absolute best.

Carter’s layered, carefully rendered guitar compositions start to resemble living organisms, expanding and contracting. They exist beyond words, beyond simple emotions. This was a set of profound beauty, Carter’s first solo set in North Carolina. He made it one for the ages.

These songs will be available in 2014 on releases from Three Lobed Recordings as well as an Italian label so new it doesn’t have a name yet. We are not only thankful for what Carter has accomplished to date, but what lies in front of him.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed customized for this recording and Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The young Nashville band Promised Land Sound represents a bold new move by the fledgling North Carolina label Paradise of Bachelors. It’s their first attempt to officially break a new act. And, if the quality of PLS’ live performance at the PoB/WXYC Hopscotch Music Festival Day Show is any way to gauge it, I’d say they have a good shot at succeeding. The Bachelors signed the band on a bit of a whim, having caught them as an opening act for established underground artists Wooden Wand and MV & EE at William Tyler‘s venue The Stone Fox. The band fits well into PoB’s musical vision, with a catalog that expresses a continuous line from the rock of decades ago to today’s artists. Which is to say that while PLS is new, their country-inflected barroom choogling could have lit a fire under people’s ass back when the band members’ parents were still on the prowl.

This set covered both material from their just-released debut LP, Promised Land Sound (which features Tyler as a guest performer), as well as some earlier material from their Stoned Eagle EP from 2012. The boys’ live performance emphasized the grittiness of their sound, and in many ways flattered the hands-off approach taken to the record’s production, which has a good bit of similarity to the live sound. Rocking out in the lovely Stephenson Amphitheatre in the late summer sun, I could see how the comparisons made between such luminaries as CCR, Jim Ford and Gene Clark in the press materials were more than fair. Promised Land Sound should have a lot to look forward to in the years ahead.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other PoB Day Show recordings, with Schoeps MK4V cardiods at the stage lip and a soundboard feed. While the performance, and the quality of the capture of the instruments on stage is excellent, the PA suffered from some distortion that is evident on the recording, primarily in the vocals. With the understanding that this is a limitation of the equipment and not the band, this should be a worthwhile introduction to this up-and-coming young act. Enjoy!

With High Aura’d, the multi-talented John Kolodij creates sonic landscapes with an understated energy. This set at Long View Center — pretty much the home base for much of the drone/ambient and less-noisy avant-garde music during Hopscotch Music Festival — began with the sound of crickets. Washes of guitar and other sound began to ebb and flow underneath. The repetition was hypnotic, slightly dangerous, as if we were about to enter a world we did not know. As the undertones of bass throbbed beneath, Kolodij faced the crowd through the blackness. The intensity of the guitars crested to a torrent of noise, while the crickets kept chirping. Something had entered that dark little world.

That was just the first of three songs, each long-form compositions. Two of these songs are brand-new — newer, even than the band’s latest 7″, a split with Blood Bright Star. The middle song, “Methodist Bells,” appears on High Aura’d’s outstanding 2012 release Sanguine Futures, on the Asheville, North Carolina-based Bathetic Records. Look for at least one of these tracks on High Aura’d’s next LP release on Bathetic, date TBD.

You know it’s something very, very special when Steve Gunn and John Truscinski (who plays with Gunn in Gunn-Truscinski Duo and their new trio arrangement) team up with Irish guitar phenom Cian Nugent and Jason Meagher (of, among others, No Neck Blues Band and D. Charles Speer & the Helix) for the North American debut of their collaboration Desert Heat. Hopscotch Music Festival is always a special time, but what drew me back for a second year, and will again for a third, was the Three Lobed Recordings/WXDU day show, held again this year at King’s Barcade. Among several rare collaborations and one-time appearances, Desert Heat was one of the most hotly anticipated, and by the time these players took the stage, the medium-sized venue had a line out front. Give it one listen and you’ll hear why; Gunn and Nugent are among the most creative and exciting guitarists and songwriters of this era, and both were on fire for this special performance that showed off the A side from the new Cat Mask at Huggie Temple 12-inch, the band’s sole release, before delving into some unknown territory with a new long form jam currently titled “Desert Whythe”. To top it all off, the band tore through Velvet Underground’s “Oh! Sweet Nuthin'” with their own special wall-of-guitars twists, with Gunn handling the vocal duties. On a day filled with outstanding performances (many of which will be shared here over time or released by Three Lobed), this was undeniably one of the highest of the highlights.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed that I customized for both this recording and the simulcast on Duke University’s radio station WXDU, plus Schoeps MK4V microphones right at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding; easily one of a handful of the best recordings I have ever shared on this site. Enjoy!

Speedy Ortiz: September 6, 2013 Hopscotch Music Festival, Kennedy Theater (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Speedy Ortiz is the aptly-named recording project of Sadie Dupuis, formerly vocalist/guitarist of the Brooklyn band (and NYCTaper Northside showcase vets) Quilty. This year’s very-well-received full-length debut on Carpark Records, Major Arcana, shows the full potential of Dupuis’ sound when joined to a band, who first recorded with her on 2012’s Sports EP. If Quilty echoed the heavy-tinged sound of Veruca Salt almost to a tee at points, Speedy Ortiz draws from a broader palette of influences, including Tuscadero, Slant 6 and Archers of Loaf to name a few. But not only can Dupuis write a hell of a catchy song, but she stands out both for having a singing voice that she can throttle up from sweet to scream at a moment’s notice. While her contemporaries’ lyrics often tend to word salad to fill space between riffs, Dupuis’ confessional style gives you something to think about — which led Pitchfork to make a favorable comparison to Liz Phair in their review of Major Arcana.

This Hopscotch Music Festival set by the band was one of the more hotly-anticipated of the festival for me, having missed several of the Northampton, MA band’s local shows. To the surprise of no one, the band’s live show brought out the harder element of their sound, while more surprisingly still giving Dupuis’ vocals plenty of room to shine in the mix. The band didn’t spend much time on chitchat during a short-but-sweet set that covered many of Major Arcana‘s best tracks plus some more obscure releases like the 7″ release “Taylor Swift” and two tracks from Sports, including one of my favorites, “Silver Spring”. Dupuis has always had a knack for songwriting, and with this unit cohering around that skill, I’d expect Speedy Ortiz to see a lot more positive press in their future.

Introducing the 23-year-old guitar prodigy Daniel Bachman at their day show event (where he played with Pelt), my friends at Paradise of Bachelors paid Bachman a high compliment indeed when they referred to him as the logical heir of the late, great Jack Rose. To compare anyone, even today’s best living guitarists, to Rose might well border on sacrilege for those who follow these types of musicians closely. At least, it would if Bachman didn’t live up to the hype. For those who saw him play a solo set of his signature steel string fingerstyle guitar at Raleigh’s Long View Center  during the Hopscotch Music Festival on this Friday night — recorded by our buddy David Schwentker — it became clear that he does.

The Chapel Hill based guitarist, originally of Fredricksburg, Virginia, has four solo albums under his belt already, including his two 2012 releases Seven Pines and Oh Be Joyful, plus two more records he recorded as Sacred Harp that were released back in 2010. He’s been playing this music, which he calls “psychedelic Appalachia”, since he was a teenager. What you hear on this recording is the product of years of Bachman honing his craft, as well as absorbing the lessons learned from sharing stages with the greats, including Rose. This set wandered all over Bachman’s catalog, including previewing two new tracks from his forthcoming third album on Tompkins Square, Jesus I’m A Sinner. Both of those songs — “Sarah Anne” and “Blenheim” — show the continuing promise of this fine young musician. Two of these songs — “Pig Iron” and the untitled number — are being recorded now, with release planned for 2014. Yes, you heard it right — Bachman has a new record that’s not even out yet, and he’s already on to the next project.
