Ryley Walker: October 24, 2014 Aquarium Drunkard CMJ Showcase, Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It seems only appropriate to post a recording of Ryley Walker on the heels of one by the great Hiss Golden Messenger. These two artists represent among the very finest of their time, separated by a generation but potentially on very similar career trajectories. The two are also likely to have a lot of overlap in fans, because those drawn to authenticity, a canny understanding of their musical past, and honest songwriting are likely to find good company with these two. My first experience with Ryley Walker — playing with a full band at the Hopscotch Music Festival — also mirrored my first live experience with HGM two years before. Here, at the Aquarium Drunkard CMJ showcase at Rough Trade, Ryley proved himself alone (with a supporting bassist for part of the set). More to the point, Ryley proved himself an unmitigated master of his art, far beyond his years in poise and style.

Most CMJ sets tend to be truncated versions of artists’ “best stuff”, run through in perfunctory fashion to get the most bang for the buck in terms of setlist. Walker saw things differently, leading off with a twelve-minute, spine-tingling “Summer Dress” that equaled about a third of the set. That time wasn’t wasted, either, as Walker soared on improvised vocal runs that took the song beyond the singer-songwriter realm into something spiritual, his voice becoming its own instrument rather than the mere vessel of lyrics. As with the bulk of the set in North Carolina back in September, this focused entirely on new material in lieu of Walker’s outstanding album of earlier this year All Kinds of You. That alone should say something about how prolific this artist is at this point. The ability of the young Chicagoan to distill such pain and emotion into his work is a humbling surprise, the kind of thing you’d never guess from the rest of his happy-go-lucky stage persona. This is a man possessed of rare gifts, and we cannot wait to see them brought to a wider world.

I recorded this set primarily with a soundboard feed by Rough Trade engineer Kameron Biehl, with a small amount of Schoeps audience microphones added for ambiance. Other than a few glitches with a DI during one song, the sound is excellent. Enjoy, and spread the word!

Thanks to Ryley Walker and Aquarium Drunkard for permitting the recording.

Cass McCombs: November 1 and October 31, 2014 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

On night two of the Cass McCombs / Meat Puppets stand at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade, the order was switched, with McCombs the “headliner” playing the longer set. Since his breakout moment a few years ago, McCombs has shifted direction a bit, turning his sound toward the jammier side of things with an expanded band. We pointed this out last year when McCombs first brought his material from Big Wheel and Others to the stage at Bowery Ballroom. This time, Cass had a new band in tow but a similar attitude, letting songs proceed at a languid pace that gave the band time to grow into the tunes. In that sense, the two shows offer a bit of a contrast, as the Halloween show finds the band self-editing a bit to make the time requirements, while the November 1st show gives you a full-on jamfest, including a very extended version of “County Line” from 2011’s breakout Wit’s End as an encore. Once again it was arguably the Halloween show that once again took the cake, as the reduced set time both focused Cass’ energies and also yielded a unique cover of Metallica’s “The Unforgiven”. Whatever your Cass preferences, this twofer tour with the Meat Puppets is a can’t miss. The bands are finishing up this year on the West Coast, with the tour dates here.

Each of these sets were recorded in the same manner as Eric PH’s and my respective sets from Halloween. The November 1st set was recorded with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed from Kyle of Rough Trade, while the Halloween show is Audio Technica 3031 microphones and Kyle’s feed. Both are excellent. Enjoy!

August Wells: October 12, 2014 Rough Trade NYC – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

IMG_7866

August Wells is a new band filled with an accomplished cast of incredible performers. Led by Ken Griffin, best known for having recorded several well-liked records in the mid-90s with the Irish outfit Rollerskate Skinny, whose album Horsedrawn Wishes remains an essential of the Irish music scene. The band’s cast also includes pianist John Rauchenberger, who has played with a wide range of bands including The Favourite Sons, Maggie Estep, and J.C Morrison; horn player Louis Schwadron, who leads the band Sky White Tiger and has played with Radiohead, David Bowie, Elton John, and Grizzly Bear, among others; and violinist/composer Leyna Marika Papach, who has been responsible for numerous scores for film, theater and dance. Griffin’s sound has matured beyond Rollerskate Skinny, showing a melancholy that seem to come more easily with the years. “It’s all as beautiful as ever / I hope somehow it gets to stay that way” Griffin sings on “Beautiful as Ever”. There’s a wistfulness in this and many of Griffin’s other lines, but also hope. Somehow, things might stay that way.

Griffin and co. took the stage just before Steve Gunn on this night at Rough Trade, and were greeted with an audience ripe for this kind of music. We look forward to seeing this new band more around the city, as they’ve already played dates at Union Pool, Baby’s All Right, and Le Poisson Rouge, among others. The band’s next appearance comes this Sunday at the Scratcher Sessions at the legendary East Village bar at 7:30 p.m. The band also has upcoming shows planned with The Frames and on the Irish TV show Other Voices.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Steve Gunn recording, with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from engineer Nick. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Meat Puppets: October 31 and November 1, 2014 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Sets

Rooting for the Meat Puppets by now is a given; the band has seen it all, and somehow come out the other side better and not worse for wear. In the course of seeing the band during the life of this site, they have gotten better and tighter each time, from their phoenix-rising moment at the Knit in 2007 to a post-personnel change show at Bowery in 2009 to a stellar outing at Mercury Lounge in 2013. This year the band played back-to-back sets at one of Williamsburg’s two ascendant new venues, Rough Trade. The band shared co-headlining duties with Cass McCombs, with the acts swapping headliner slots between Halloween and the day after.

New team member Eric PH caught the longer Puppets set on Halloween night, and to be honest, he was the luckier of us, as the Puppets better-deserved that slot, showing command of their instruments and the audience on both nights. On an already-weird holiday, you need people like the off-kilter Arizonans to fully do you right, and the Pups obliged with a career-spanning set filled with fun covers of everyone from Willie Nelson and Ray Charles to the Everly Brothers. The band also delivered their most popular “hit” for an encore, the always-endearing “Backwater” from Too High To Die. As the “opening” band on the second night, I caught the Pups at an equal moment of inspiration, with a set that was slimmed down by about 20 minutes from the previous one. Still, they had plenty of time to play the three near-obligatory songs popularized by Nirvana on MTV Unplugged (that’d be “Plateau”, “Oh Me” and “Lake of Fire”) and a searing extended version of that Everly Brothers cover, “Cathy’s Clown”. “Plateau” was also a high point, led in by a cover of George Jones’ “Season of My Heart”. Chalk it up to being older and wiser (and maybe more sober), or simply rekindling their groove, but the Meat Puppets have never been better.

Eric PH recorded his set with Audio Technica microphones set up in our usual spot in the venue, combined with a soundboard feed from well-known local engineer Kyle. Mine was recorded with the Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and Kyle’s feed once again. Both recordings are outstanding, and available to stream and download below. Enjoy!

Negative Scanner: October 25, 2014 Trouble In Mind CMJ Showcase, Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

How in the hell does any band get itself across at CMJ? And doubly, how in the hell does a band get through to people as the leadoff act at a day show, on a Saturday? If you’re not fighting hangovers, it’s crowd chatter, and if it’s not those things, it’s garden-variety ennui. At that point, even people who love music are rapidly approaching Peak Music — your little band barely stands a chance.

Luckily nobody told Negative Scanner any of that. The Chicago band gave those of us who showed up early to the Trouble In Mind Records CMJ showcase the kick in the gut we needed to shake off the night before and remember why we were there — for that matter, why CMJ exists at all. A newly-signed band with more or less one 7-inch and some out of print cassettes to their name (plus a 2015 full length on the way), Negative Scanner define the kind of fresh talent that a music festival needs — that music needs — to be relevant. Their sound, raucous but tight post-punk a bit in the vein of early Sleater-Kinney, relies only Rebecca Valeriano-Flores’s aggressive, yelped vocals, but a crack band that clearly not only bothers to practice, but aspires to bigger things. This spirit got captured early on in the band’s first Craigslist ad, recounted by Impose Magazine: “Bands we like include Wire, The Fall, Siouxie and the Banshees, Video, Total Control. NO FLAKES, NO DRUNKS, PRO GEAR, PRO ATTITUDE.” Harsh, maybe, but the attitude paid off. Negative Scanner don’t just get your fists pumping with their energy; they sound good while doing it.

Most of this set is not available in recorded format, other than some live sets you can find floating around on Chicago venues’ bandcamp pages. So take this as a bit of a preview of the greatness to come, and be on the watch for this band in 2015. They’re the best act I hadn’t already heard of that I saw at CMJ.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones in our usual spot in the venue, combined with a high-quality soundboard feed from Rough Trade engineer Cam. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Matt Northrup: September 5, 2014 Hopscotch Music Festival, Vintage 21, Raleigh, NC – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

Greensboro, NC-based guitarist Matt Northrup comes from the distinctly louder spectrum of folks in the solo guitar field. He has commented before on the fact that people don’t always expect “solo guitarist” to represent quite the wall of sound that his performances tend to create, but I suspect he’s OK with the added mystery. One of the highlights of Hopscotch Music Festival for me is always the chance to catch up on North Carolina talent that I haven’t been exposed to before, and seeing Northrup was high on my list. In the dim and quiet confines of Vintage 21, he more than rewarded all of our interest with a multi-part piece, “The Unwinding”, that hasn’t yet been committed to recorded form. What is clear is that Northrup is one to watch among the latest guitar talents. Don’t miss him.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK41 microphones which provided a little bit of ambiance. The quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Ed Schrader’s Music Beat: September 26, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

IMG_0082

Ed Schrader’s Music Beat have the distinction of being, hands down, one of the weirdest bands I’ve ever seen. If the duo of Ed Schrader and Devlin Rice’s instrumentation — Rice’s bass and Schrader’s single floor tom, played standing up — or their quirky and hilarious banter weren’t enough, then there’d be the songs themselves to consider. They play short, loud blasts of scrawling sonic assault, intermingled with some traditional singing by Schrader that included, on this night at Mercury Lounge, a semi-sincere Elton John cover. The pair played in complete blackness, with Schrader going shirtless fairly soon into the set. He talked about his time in Utica, pre-Baltimore relocation, and sang a few songs about it, too. Schrader’s music, if you listen to his crowd banter, might be deeply personal, or it might make no sense at all. Or it might be both — he does after all sing about how he can’t stop eating sugar, a problem to which we can all relate. This set didn’t even last an hour, yet comprises 19 tracks, including the aforementioned Elton cover and another of Frank Sinatra.

As some things I record tend to be (see, e.g., Tony Conrad at Hopscotch), this is probably the kind of thing you have to see live for it to fully make sense. These are songs that belong in context, in a dark room late on a Friday night, where you’re primed not only to laugh, but to be exposed to something original and maybe a little bit unsettling. Schrader isn’t trying to helm a traditional rock band, and if that’s what you’re here for, eject while you can. If not, take a trip into Schrader’s delightfully demented little world, and prepare to be tickled.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from house engineer Dave Lefcourt and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Celebration: September 26, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

October 16, 2014
By

IMG_7860

Celebration easily wins for a band with an apt-sounding (if not optimally Google-able) name. Their upbeat sound threads the needle between organic and electronic in a way that invites a host of meaningless microgenre phrases like “psychedelic soul” and “cabaret-punk”. Whatever you want to call it, the root of the matter is that the band’s key appeal rests on two pillars — the voice of Katrina Ford and the sounds made by multi-instrumentalist Sean Antanaitis, the one most responsible for the band’s hard-to-classify sound. By this point, the Baltimore band has been at it a full decade, yet the only really clear thing I’ve read about them is that they’re friends with TV on the Radio. Such is their blessing and curse — Celebration don’t fit into many neat boxes or narratives, the less so the longer they’ve been around.

This show at Mercury Lounge was styled as a bit of a release party for the band, being the New York debut of the material from their 2014 LP, Albumin, along with some numbers even newer than the current releases. If you didn’t know the band at all up until the first song played, that album’s track “Razor’s Edge” might have convinced you that they were standard-bearing shoegazers, leaving the confusion at the door. But that was just the first song. “Tomorrow’s Here Today” — next up on the album as well as at the show — takes things in a completely different direction, drawing inspiration from New Wave. Owing perhaps to being the anchor act on a late-going bill, the band kept things loose, taking their time between songs and playing the new material unselfconsciously.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from Mercury production manager Dave Lefcourt. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Steve Gunn: October 12, 2014 Rough Trade NYC – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

October 14, 2014

IMG_7879

Steve Gunn‘s tenacity and prolific output have paid off. When I saw the man mentioned in Rolling Stone in conjunction with his latest, Way Out Weather, which also received favorable notice in all the right places, I felt that sense of vindication that sometimes the mainstream gets it right. Properly hailed in that magazine as a “six-string legend”, what is perhaps more notable about Gunn’s recent turns is his growth as a vocalist. More than a few guitarists’ careers have foundered when the man stepped to the microphone, but Gunn’s vocal turns, particularly on his last two records, have only broadened his appeal. You’d be mistaken if you ignored instrumental triumphs like Boerum Palace and Ocean Parkway (or his Golden Gunn effort with Hiss Golden Messenger), but Gunn has established himself now as a capable traditional frontman as well as one of the most exciting guitarists of his generation.

This show celebrated the release of Way Out Weather in Gunn’s hometown, and he and the band arrived exhausted but loose from a too-long stint on the parking lot of I-95. The show began almost informally, with the band’s soundcheck seguing into a jam that became “Water Wheel” from Time Off, followed by “Old Strange” from that album in a similar, extra-extended mode. Gunn took his time between tracks to chat about the meanings of songs (“Wildwood” came from a lot of time on the Jersey shore as a kid; “Milly’s Garden” arose out of conflict with a nosy neighbor) and joke with the crowd. The vibe was both homecoming and celebration, as it should have been. The title track and “Tommy’s Congo” already feel like live show standards, offering Gunn ample opportunities to shred on guitar. Likewise, he and the band didn’t hold back on the encore number, “Lurker”, a song celebrated for a while now as one of the best examples of Gunn’s vintage blues. Gunn’s exposure to the world has been a bit like his music, unfolding without hurry, at his own pace. Here’s to more people spreading the word.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from Rough Trade engineer in our usual location in the venue. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Brooklyn’s Landlady is a really good live band, and they’re good in a way that flatters their musical skill as well as drawing a crowd. Where most music has to make a choice between being interesting or mass-appealing, they seem able to do both, to hang in a narrow band that includes acts like Vampire Weekend, TV On the Radio, and The Dirty Projectors. That I pulled those references from the prior decade isn’t unintentional; Landlady feels like the pleasing synthesis of a few different strands of late-aughts rock, created and executed by Adam Schatz and his bandmates since 2010. Schatz has called Landlady’s songs his “big songs”, and the veteran brings a certain big-tent gusto to the songs that makes them distinct from other projects in which he has been involved, like Man Man or Father Figures. It’s as if Schatz — a multi-instrumentalist himself, including saxophone — distilled some of his other project’s textural complexity and general weirdness into something still-complex but more ready and willing to be liked.

That was all in evidence on the final day of the Hopscotch Music Festival, as Raleigh’s Pour House packed in for the Hometapes / Trekky Records day show. Landlady were representing the former, an outfit recently moved to Durham, North Carolina, and made their label proud. It’d be easy not to care about a day show crowd on a festival’s last day, just near the end of a month-long tour. The band had played Hopscotch Thursday, traveled to Richmond, VA on Friday, then back to Raleigh on Saturday because, as Schatz put it, “we like you”. The band treated us like a special crowd, too, giving us a brisk but powerful set that awakened even the most jaded and hungover festivalgoers. Landlady’s music has an at-times tribal quality to it, abetted in part by the use of two drummers, and that gives the music a festive air. Songs rarely stand still, shifting textures and ideas more often in the space of a single number than many bands achieve in entire albums. True to Schatz’s reputation as a showman, the band saved probably the two biggest standout tracks — “Maria” and “Above My Ground” for the end, though “The Globe” would come in a close third. That final number “Above My Ground” gave Schatz a chance to give a mini-speech mid-song in which he ruminated on the impermanence of things before exhorting the audience to sing the song’s one-word refrain — “always”. As Schatz said, the song is about having lost something, and you got the sense that Landlady would genuinely miss us. They are, after all, a band that stands out the most when they have a packed crowd to watch.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed from the Pour House engineer Jack. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
