Wrekmeister Harmonies: November 4, 2016 Trans-Pecos

There might not be a better time for us to post this show in light of Tuesday night’s horrific events. The new Wrekmeister Harmonies album Light Falls is a meditation on the struggle against all odds to overcome evil. Inspired by Primo Levi’s writings about his time at Auschwitz, Levi’s anti-fascist resistance fighter model of fortitude and resolve is perhaps an extremely apt guide for us all at present. For the album, Wrekmeister’s J.R. Robinson and Esther Shaw added some gravitas to the proceedings by inviting three members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor to perform on the record. The result is a profoundly moving musical piece that explores the emotional ebbs and flows while on the ledge of life and death surrounded by pure evil — 1944 becomes 2016.

Wrekmeister Harmonies came East last week for a special show at Trans-Pecos, hosted by AdHoc, before leaving for a lengthy tour of Europe in November and December. The live band did include along with J.R. and Esther, the drummer Tim Herzog from Godspeed, Dana Schechter (Insect Ark) on lap steel, and Martin Farmer on bass. The set was one full uninterrupted suite consisting of the entire Light Falls album with three non-album tracks interspersed within the suite. However the focus was not on individual pieces but the performance as a whole — a profound use of light and dark, peace and anger, and subtlety and cacophony to draw out emotions very rarely felt while viewing a musical performance. Wrekmeister Harmonies is a unit not to be missed, and while they are in Europe we recommend playing Light Falls and this performance loudly and often.

I recorded this set with the usual setup in this venue, Schoeps at stage lip mixed with a board feed. Chris did a superb job mixing the band and the room sound was outstanding. The result is we feel a superb recording that accurately captures this moving music. Enjoy!

Sloan: October 17, 2016 Bowery Ballroom

Twenty years ago the end game in the script for success in the music industry was still a big record deal. But like most “sure things”, the big deal was often a big trap. For Sloan that meant signing with Geffen Records for their 1992 album Smeared, but by the time of the release of their second album their relationship with Geffen went sour. After 1994’s Twice Removed, Sloan left the label and rumors of their break-up began to circulate.

The reports of their death having been greatly exaggerated, Sloan recorded One Chord To Another in 1996 on a shoestring budget and with modest recording techniques. And not only were they not dead, One Chord ended up being Sloan’s best selling record and a Juno Prize winner. Twenty years later it was time to celebrate this pivotal point in the band’s long and illustrious career and in 2016 One Chord To Another got the box set treatment and a tour.

At Bowery Ballroom last week, the One Chord tour rolled into town and Sloan played a two-set show with the album played straight through as the first set, and an intentionally democratic selection of songs as the second set. The band specifically referenced trying to cover at least one song from every album for this show — and that they did. The two hours of music and full album play made this show an event, but what made the night even more special occurred with two fans in between sets. In 2011, a couple had their first date at the Sloan show at Bowery Ballroom and play our recording every year on their anniversary. Five years later, Bowery and Sloan was perfect time and place for Ben Lindbergh to propose — and she said yes!

I recorded this set in a slightly different manner from our usual way — the placement of Sloan’s touring soundboard moved our mounted room microphones a little to the left and our feed from the remote board came with some issues. It took me a while to sort everything out in editing this set, including trying to minimize the sonic issues that came with the amplifier that exploded at the end of the first set. But all in all, I feel like this is now a superb recording. Enjoy!

PUP‘s latest album The Dream is Over (SideOneDummy) is on my short list of best albums of the year. The record captures the manic energy of this Toronto quartet with a collection of songs that exhibit the band’s ability to craft punk rock anthems of angst with a bit of excess and plenty of humor. Dream also brings out the deeper side of PUP with tracks such as “The Coast” and “Pine Point” that delve into that special brand of Canadian loneliness. The album has earned PUP a nomination for a Polaris prize, and universal praise worldwide.

The concept of the album’s production was to bottle up the energy of a live PUP show and put that on a record. This is a band that is in the midst of playing 100 total shows in 2016 where the PUP magic takes place virtually on a nightly basis. But since the last time I saw PUP live was almost three years ago at a modestly attended show at Cameo Gallery before either of their records were released, I wasn’t quite keyed into the true contemporary live PUP experience. That is, until this past Saturday night at Bowery Ballroom.

From the very outset of the show’s opening number “If This Tour Doesn’t Kill You, I Will”, this very sold-out crowd at Bowery was one massive syncopated group of heads and arms and legs. From our usual vantage point at the front of the balcony, we get a clear bird’s eye view of the floor, and this PUP crowd never stopped dancing, surfing and singing along to every song. We haven’t seen a crowd this animated in a long time or a band as motivated to drive that energy. PUP’s set drew upon both of their albums pretty equally, with nine of the sixteen songs performed coming from Dream and the other seven songs from their self-titled debut album. The crazy energy culminated in lead singer Stefan Babcock literally crowd-surfing the entire floor to the back bar where, while elevated, he downed a shot of whiskey and returned surfing the entire crowd back onto the stage. It was an accomplishment only made possible by the sheer will of the fans and their utter faith in this band.

PUP’s current US and Canadian tour dates continue into mid-December, before the band goes to England in early 2017, all dates [here].

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards in our usual location and mixed with Kenny’s excellent feed. There are some drum level adjustments in the first two tracks, but afterwards the sound is completely dialed-in and is quite an excellent capture of the amazing energy at this show. Enjoy!

Teenage Fanclub: October 15, 2016 Bowery Ballroom

The legend goes that in 1991, SPIN Magazine selected Teenage Fanclub’s album Bandwagonesque as its record of the year ahead of such luminaries as REM’s Out of Time, Nirvana’s Nevermind and My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless. Over the years, that choice has been ridiculed in certain circles, but twenty-five years later the selection is rather prescient. My Bloody Valentine didn’t make another album after Loveless until twenty-two years later, REM never made another album that approached the quality of Out of Time, and of course Nirvana was over less than three years later. As careers go, Teenage Fanclub has been the most consistent of the four bands and produced the largest quality catalog in the years since SPIN took heat for them.

This year Teenage Fanclub released their eleventh album and first since 2010. Here (Merge Records) is a record of significant maturity and focus — the band is producing songs as strong as ever and the group harmonies are as sweet as ever. The band has now embarked on a US tour in support of the album and NYC enjoyed two shows this weekend, including Brooklyn last night and the Bowery Ballroom show we caught on Saturday night. Teenage Fanclub live was as compelling and impressive as the new album. This is a band that is both fully committed and comfortable and the show was just one peak after another. The setlist drew fairly democratically from the band’s full catalog and with just five songs from Here, was not overly weighted to push new material. And twenty-five years on, the only two tracks from Bandwagonesque played were given center stage, with a perfect version of the classic “The Concept” closing the main set.

Teenage Fanclub plays Boston tonight and the tour continues through six more October US dates before the band returns to Europe in November, all dates here.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue, with the Schoeps mounted at the balcony rail mixed with a fine feed from the band’s touring FOH. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Luna: October 1, 2016 – Rough Trade

With their reunion currently in its third year, I think its safe to assume that Luna is back. The band has been doing these brief and intermittent tours since 2014, and the current one (four dates) completed with two nights at Rough Trade in Brooklyn. The first night was a standard mixed set and the second night included a complete performance of the Penthouse album.

The Saturday show began in earnest with 23 Minutes in Brussels, a lengthy song with a propelled instrumental segment that usually works as a show-stopping number. From the outset it was clear that this was going to be no ordinary night. There was classic numbers, obscure tracks, a song from Britta Philips‘ new solo album Luck or Magic, and ultimately two callbacks for encores. But what was most striking about this show was the band’s positive energy, tight arrangements and relative feeling of being at ease. They’re comfortable being Luna and that is a very good thing that bodes well for more tours and for our presence at local (and some distant) shows.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted inside of the soundboard booth and mixed with Evan’s superb feed. The sound quality is pretty much ideal. Enjoy!

Palehound: August 13, 2016 Trans-Pecos

It was a sunny afternoon on one of the hottest days of the year, but inside the cool confines of Trans-Pecos last Saturday’s show hosted by PopGun was a winner. Palehound was the headliner and it is true that we had not seen the band since our CMJ show in 2014. In the interim, Ellen Kempner compiled a new band — which is essentially now a power trio of Jesse Weiss on drums and Dave Khoshtinat on bass. With a superb rhythm section behind her and on the tails of last year’s well received album Dry Food, Ellen’s stature has been all upwards since our last meeting. At Pecos to a large crowd relieved to be indoors and cool, Palehound played a well-paced set that featured three new songs but relied primarily on Dry Food material. Sure, we got a couple of “oldies” including the fave “Pet Carrot” but this is a band that is clearly looking forward where the future is rosy as hell.

Palehound will be playing the Wild Honey Pie’s Welcome Campers event next weekend. Details here. The band will return to more active dates in the Fall.

Ryley Walker: May 13, 2016 “A Day at the Market” (Market Hotel)

“A Day at the Market” is really a simple concept for an intimate performance in a quintessential setting. Some of our favorite performers will play the Market Hotel during the daylight with unamplified acoustic guitars in front of a select audience. The first installment of what we anticipate will be a long-running series featured the inimitable Ryley Walker.

This show took place on a Friday afternoon, and as you can tell from the rumbling train and siren audible early in this recording, the Market Hotel’s unique location was very much a part of the proceedings. And that’s how it was intended. One of the charms of this unique venue is the placement of the huge window behind the stage that makes the audience feel as if the performer is playing virtually on the J/M Myrtle-Broadway subway platform. And the intimate nature of the event made it easy to understand why we selected Ryley Walker for the debut of A Day at the Market — his immense talents and likeability are quite intense when it feels like its just you and him in the room.

Ryley played all new songs at this event, offering us a preview of his new album Golden Sings That Have Been Sung, which will be released on August 19 on Dead Oceans Records. Of the nine songs on the album, six were performed (along with one unreleased track). Ryley was accompanied only by stand-up bass player Anton Hatwich, so that these are pared-down versions of the new album and this recording is a fine accompaniment to the official release.

More great news to report — Ryley Walker will return (with full band) to the Market Hotel for a proper night time show on November 3 and tickets are now available [HERE].

I recorded this set with four strategically placed microphones. I utilized the installed audio technica cards mounted in the center of the room combined with two schoeps cards on a stand in the front of the stage. While obviously the wholly acoustic setting allowed for the ambient sounds to be heard, overall this recording is exactly how it should be — full spectrum clear sound of a special event in a special setting. Enjoy!

Today, more than any other day. It’s effective as a song, even more effective as a mantra. The Montreal band Ought seem to be living by it well, unafraid to release precocious, ambitious music into the wild without precondition or posturing. Their new album, Sun Coming Down, starts off with a nearly eight-minute song, and that should tell you something about where this band’s collective head is at in terms of what their priorities are. Proudly off-kilter in some respects, but never veering from straight-up playing a good song, Ought are that band you wish your geek friend had managed to actually achieve — something smart, interesting, and also engaging. When singer-guitarist Tim Darcy makes his voice warble in that oh so strange way that he does on “The Combo” and elsewhere, it’s as if he’s making the joke you’re in on. People much older than him might look askance at acting a little silly, but he’s all-in. If you don’t like it, you’re welcome to leave, but there’s no reason for that, really.

This set at Rough Trade focused on Sun Coming Down, and if that album lacks a bit of the exuberance of the debut, it makes up for it with even more ambition. The band’s years on the road have further tightened up the sound of an act that was once a lark among roommates; like many of their hometown brethren, Ought sound like they give a fuck, and whether or not the word “punk” falls into your label for them says a lot about what you think that word means. Darcy’s sing-speak, likened at times to Mark E. Smith, is neither spontaneous nor lazy, calculated to deliver the maximum impact of what he has to say. This Sunday night crowd knew it, too, and the band delivered. By the time their first album’s title track rolled around as the first encore, even the people who had to go to work the next day knew they’d made the right decision. In the end, there’s only today, and you might as well make the most of it.

Heartless Bastards: May 10, 2016 Music Hall of Williamsburg

Our journey with the Heartless Bastards continued this year with this show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, part of a dual-headlining tour with the Old 97’s (unfortunately, not taped). Since we first started covering their shows seven years ago, the Bastards have proven over and over to be a consistent, happy go lucky gang of road warriors, churning out one high energy show after another. It’s a credit to them that over a career that spans numerous albums and more than a decade, there’s not a dud among the bunch. Like another Cincinnati band we like to gush about, this band trades flash for grit, quality for quackery. For this show, the second of theirs we’ve covered at this venue, there wasn’t a brand-new album to promote (Restless Ones came out last year) so we were treated to a hit parade of sorts, from “Blue Day” from All This Time, to some of my favorites from Arrow like “Down in the Canyon” and “Skin and Bone,” to the new stuff, including obvious road winner “Gates of Dawn.” As both bands played essentially headliner-length sets, this clocked in a touch shorter than some of the recent sets we’ve seen (though still well past an hour) but nobody left complaining. The band went on to swap places with the Old 97’s a couple nights later at Irving Plaza, but I have to believe the Music Hall crowd got the better end of the bargain. As Erika said, the band loves this club, and for good reason. Like the band themselves, it’s something familiar, and something good.

Our readers may have noticed that we’ve been producing and promoting a lot of shows this year. In the past we dabbled with showcases and occasional nights, but with our involvement in Market Hotel and its sister venue Trans-Pecos, we will be presenting roughly one or two shows a month for the foreseeable future. This past month, our guests were the phenomenally underappreciated Philly psych/garage outfit Spacin’. The nice part of producing your own shows is the ability to select the bands — and we were extremely pleased that Spacin’ accepted our invitation. We’ve been fans of the band for quite some time, going all the way back to a magical night at 285 Kent in 2013, and then again at Hopscotch later that year. And Spacin’ was everything that we’d hoped at Pecos. The set was a mix of material old and new, including two songs from the band’s 2016 album Total Freedom, the live debut performance of brand new “I Don’t Know What to Do About It”, and a cover of the 90s punk band Dead Moon. But details and descriptions aside, the best evidence of the phenomenal performance of Spacin’ is to just listen to this recording — its crackling with energy and authenticity. We said back in 2013 that we were never going to miss another Spacin’ show in NYC. And in 2016 we had to make it happen ourselves, and will hopefully get that chance again.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards at the front of the stage picking up the live sound from the band’s amps and mixed that with a fine board feed provided by house FOH Chris. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
