Eidetic Seeing: August 9, 2012 Public Assembly – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

For fans of heavy, psychedelic, experimental and improvisational rock, the current Brooklyn and NYC scene is an embarrassment of riches. To an illustrious list that includes White Hills, The Psychic Paramount, Oneida, Naam and many others (many of whom have been featured on this site), make sure to include the Brooklyn trio Eidetic Seeing in the canon. I first caught the band in their infancy, when they opened for White Hills at Cake Shop back in 2009. At the time, I was impressed, but clearly the band was just getting started. After releasing an EP that year, they laid down the until-recently vinyl only Drink the Sunin 2011. The absence of the record from the digital realm may have kept Eidetic Seeing a bit under the radar (it’s now available on their bandcamp page, and the vinyl is still featured at local record stores like Earwax and Academy), but they aren’t likely to stay that way for long.

This show at Public Assembly turned out to be an extra-special performance, as the band ran freeform through forty-five minutes of all-new material that they hope to lay down in the studio in the coming months. Several of these songs were newly-rehearsed, giving them a raw, exciting quality and giving the band members a chance to expand upon their ideas in real time. Mostly devoid of lyrics, at least for now, new songs like “Untitler” expand upon and extend the band’s palette, adding free jazz flourishes to guitarist Sean Forleza, drummer Paul Feitzinger, and bassist Danilo Randjic-Coleman’s dense, spaced-out stew. The songs flowed seamlessly from one to the next, with the highlight coming with the mid-set sequence of “Ashplant Blues” and “White Flight”, which gave Forleza a few vocal turns. Keep an eye on the band’s website for future shows in Brooklyn and beyond. These guys will melt your face if given the chance.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones in an optimal spot in the venue, coupled with a light amount of soundboard feed provided by the Public Assembly engineer, Theo. The house mix and room sound in the Public Assembly was outstanding on this night, and it is reflected in this recording. Enjoy!

Patterson Hood & the Downtown Rumblers: July 23, 2012 Bell House – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Patterson Hood must be holding back his best material. Or, at least, the solo material on display at this appearance at The Bell House wowed both Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and me to a greater level than his most recent work with his main gig, the Drive-By Truckers, has. That’s not meant as a knock on the Truckers – that band is a collaborative effort, and Hood has never been the whole equation as far as songwriting for it goes. But he has always been, at least for me, the beating heart and mascot of that band, the friendly drunk with a wink in his eye, the one who reminds you of that reliably Southern buddy you wish you had.

Hood is also the band’s great storyteller. His honest, unvarnished tales manage to be universal, even if you don’t know jack shit about moonshine and pickup trucks. His new record is called Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance, and the title track is a tribute to Patterson’s recently deceased great uncle, who raised him for much of his childhood.  If you’ve seen actual heat lightning spread its electric fingers out over a black Southern sky, seemingly tousling the pines, you know what a majestic sight it is. And why it reminded Patterson of a loved one, about to be dearly departed. Because that image, like that person you love, will never leave you.

Many of his images don’t.  There’s Billy Ringo, the hapless stoner who nearly dies every day, nearly falling from a window but still keeping his hand on his bong. There are the liquor store fanboys of “12:01”, hanging outside the store on Sunday at midnight, fighting off the shakes until they can get their whiskey fix. There are the torn pages from the back of a Gideon Bible, scrawled with a love song of a moment’s inspiration.

Hood is a gifted songwriter, blessed with the common touch and an uncommon amount of insight. He’s a generous writer and performer, too; even by the standards of rock n’ roll, you can tell how much he loves doing both. Only somebody with that much love puts on a nearly two hour  performance of solo album material on a Monday night.  This show covered much of Heat Lightning, which will be released on September 11, but also offered some of his earlier favorites like “Pollyanna” was well as notable covers, including Big Star’s “September Gurls” and Todd Rundgren’s “The Range War”. Hood and this band, christened the Downtown Rumblers, were as free spirited and lively as ever, passing a bottle of Patron around as they dug deep into Hood’s catalog at a solid, but measured pace. Hood likes to take his time to cue up his songs, to put a frame around them, if you will, and that is one of the most rewarding aspects of his live show. By the time this one wrapped, it felt like we’d spent an evening with an old friend. The show ended, appropriately, with the Eddie Hinton song “Everybody Needs Love”, and we had felt plenty of it from Patterson tonight.

This set was recorded with Schoeps MK41 microphones, whose directionality helps to reduce some of the “boomy” nature of this room, and a soundboard feed. I think you will like the results. Enjoy!

Crystal Stilts: June 17, 2012 Glasslands [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

As noted in our post back in May about the band, this site has followed Crystal Stilts from early on in their career. In my times seeing the band, I have watched them grow from at-times diffident live performers into a dialed-in act whose performances retain the ramshackle greatness of their earlier shows, but deliver a polish on their instruments and a solidity to their sound that was missing in some of those earlier shows. The band closed out the stellar Northside Festival showcase put on by Sacred Bones Records in real style, keeping Glasslands filled to capacity even though it was well after midnight on a Sunday. This set went everywhere in their catalog, from their latest LP In Love With Oblivion, to their current Radiant Door EP, and all the way back to their 2008 breakout LP Alight of Night.  They also served up a relatively rare track, “Love Is A Wave” from a 2009 7″, as well as a new number that I am calling “Delirium” for now. This set was completely different than the one we saw back in May

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from the Glasslands staff.  Like many of our Crystal Stilts recordings, this one is excellent. Enjoy!

Starlight Girls: June 16, 2012 Spike Hill [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

At this Northside Festival day show meant to showcase four of the “8 Bands You Need to Hear” (as determined by the L Magazine), Starlight Girls drew a crowd. As the first act on the bill, taking the stage during what most festivalgoers probably thought of as “recovery time” could have been a challenge. But by about the middle of  “Try”, the third song in their set, the Spike Hill show room was packed. The band serves up an addictive sound that references lounge music, 60s girl groups, soul and lo-fi indie rock – a perfect antidote to a hung over afternoon. The show began on a mellow note, but quickly ramped up the energy as the crowd (and the band’s confidence) grew. By the time the band tore into “Lion In A Cage,” my favorite number of the day, they had won over all doubters. I was also a big fan of one of the earlier, more lounge-y numbers, “$9,000,000” in particular.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardioid microphones and a soundboard feed from the Spike Hill engineer.  The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Ski Lodge: June 16, 2012 Spike Hill [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Ski Lodge are the perfect band to write about on a day when temperatures in NYC are set to hit around 100 degrees. Contrary to the name, they are a summer band, inspired by frontman Andrew Marr’s trip to a Florida beach. Chosen by the L Magazine as one of their “8 Bands You Need to Hear“, this daytime showcase at Spike Hill during the Northside Festival showcased four of such acts, with Ski Lodge the final act on the bill. It wasn’t hard to figure out where the L folks were coming from; Marr and his band make surf-inspired pop insta-classics (like “A Game”, streaming below) that are delivered with understated confidence. The sizable crowd for this day show – on another scorchingly hot day, incidentally – attested to the appeal of the band and its style. I won’t be surprised if Ski Lodge quickly finds favor with fans of acts like Surfer Blood, The Smiths, Vampire Weekend and Beach Fossils, among others. Marr is a trained classical pianist, and has a classic, crooner-style vocal that helps define the band’s laid-back aesthetic. The band currently has a four-song EP out on Dovecote Records, but expect a full-length LP sometime this year.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a stereo soundboard feed provided by the house engineer at Spike Hill. The house mix and overall room sounded excellent, and this recording is a reflection of that. Enjoy!

Field Mouse: June 16, 2012 Spike Hill [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

With a sound rooted firmly in 90s acts like My Bloody Valentine, Lush, the Breeders and Sonic Youth, Field Mouse is a very easy band for me to like. Apparently the L Magazine agreed, listing the band as one of the “8 Bands You Need to Hear” recently, which was also the organizing theme for this daytime Northside Festival showcase at lovely little Spike Hill.  Singer-guitarist Rachel Browne is an engaging frontwoman, with sweetly-scarred vocals and a great gift for awkward-but-hilarious stage banter (her reaction to an audience member who bizarrely tried to compliment her by calling her a “black hole” is a priceless moment). Co-songwriter and fellow guitarist Andrew Futral, along with bassist (and band recording engineer) Danielle DePalma and Geoff Lewitt, create a blissed-out sea of noise for Browne’s vocals, as on songs like “You Guys Are Gonna Wake Up My Mom” (which was the band’s first 7″) and “How Do You Know”. The band just funded their first release, You Are Here via a Kickstarter campaign, and we hope to see the record out there on shelves and in digital-land soon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from the Spike Hill engineer.  The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Jo Schornikow: June 10, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The Australian singer-songwriter Jo Schornikow is the best-known as the pianist and keyboardist of The Shivers, but she is a lovely singer and performer in her own right (as well as, her website humorously notes, an “internationalist” and  a “nice person”). Schornikow opened this NYCTaper-sponsored show at Mercury Lounge to a crowd that included many of her own fans, who watched reverently as Schornikow performed material from her album First Time, Long Time.  Her songs have an ageless quality to them, made all the better by Schornikow’s easygoing, friendly stage persona. A trained pianist since early childhood, Schornikow is relatively new to the singer-songwriter-guitarist thing, but you wouldn’t know it from this polished, engaging performance. This was Schornikow’s last U.S. performance for a bit as she will be touring the UK for a bit, and she leaves us eager for her return.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardioid microphones in the center of the room by the soundboard, along with a soundboard feed. Other than occasionally hearing the door to the bar open and close, it is a flawless recording. Enjoy!

AU: March 29, 2012 Cameo Gallery – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

AU is not so much a “band” as a single man’s vision – that of one Luke Wyland, currently of Portland, OR and previously of Boston. Wyland performs under this moniker in a variety of configurations – with everything from an orchestra to his current setup of just him and drummer Dana Valatka. While AU earns comparisons to bands like Panda Bear and Animal Collective, Wyland’s vision is more playful than those contemporaries. His songs give off what a fellow show-goer described as almost a “carnival” vibe at times; they are bombastic, exuberant, and downright fun no matter what your frame of mind.

This show at Cameo Gallery found AU headlining to celebrate the release of Both Lights, the band’s new album that was release today on the quirky and flawlessly curated Hometapes. a label that plays home to several of this site’s current favorites. AU rewarded a packed house with a set that began with “Ida Walked Away” from the band’s record Versions, followed by the steel drum-dominated “rr Vs. D” from Verbs before transitioning to all-new material from Both Lights that wowed the crowd.  That set-within-a-set began with the relentless and appropriately-titled “Get Alive” and transitioned into the more anthemic “OJ”. This short set could barely contain all of Wyland’s disparate ideas, but it was rewarding to see him wind up with two more extended numbers “Go Slow” and his first single from Both Lights, “Solid Gold”. If this crowd was worn out from a four-band bill that ran a bit late, it didn’t show. It would have been hard to exhaust AU’s endless fountain of ideas with a set twice this long.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Howth set, with AKG large-diaphragm microphones and an excellent soundboard feed from the Cameo FOH.  The results are also outstanding.  Enjoy!

Black Wine: February 11, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Going on first is never easy, so I was pleasantly surprised to see such a crowd out for Black Wine.  Opening the Don Giovanni Records showcase last month at Music Hall of Williamsburg, the band played their opening slot with massive enthusiasm that was rewarded with a rapidly growing crowd.  They also had a bit of an advantage.  With a sometimes-melodic punk sound (an oxymoron people used to rationalize with the word “emo”, which I’ll opt not to) that suggests echoes of the members’ most recent engagements in the New Brunswick, NJ scene – For Science, the Ergs and Hunchback – these musicians each have a fan base that stretches back into the 1990s.  Composed of the husband and wife team of guitarist Jeff Schroeck and drummer Miranda Taylor, together with Jason Nixon on bass, this team of veterans handles the vocal duties democratically onstage, with the focus shifting among players onstage as each takes a turn at the mic.  While this means their songs vary a bit more between each other than those of some bands, it also keeps things interesting, as a Taylor song will tend to have a very different feel to it than one from one of the men.  Their songs have a focused, professional feel that befits long-time musicians, perhaps most notably for me on their leadoff track “Through the Foam”, which was an immediate crowd-pleaser.  As bands like the Screaming Females and Gaslight Anthem continue to raise their profile in NYC, other New Brunswick bands like Black Wine are likely to see an increased profile for the north/central Jersey scene.  And they ought to – they’re making very good music there.

We recorded this set with Neumann KM150 microphones into a Sound Devices preamp to provide maximum clarity to the guitars and vocals.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Laura Stevenson & the Cans: February 11, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Laura Stevenson & the Cans do not have much in common with their Don Giovanni Records labelmates stylistically – the label skews, with bands like The Screaming Females, a heck of a lot noisier.  But their performance this night at Music Hall of Williamsburg – in between the Screaming Females and gritty punk outfit For Science – was, like the Females’ (posted here), one of uncompromising quality.  It should be noted that Stevenson is not without her punk credentials, either.  Prior to going out on her own with the Cans, she was best known as keyboardist for the Long Island punk collective Bomb the Music Industry!, who will be her tourmates for the next few months along with the Felice Brothers, Screaming Females, and others.  Her band’s own music is more of the confessional, folk-influenced  singer-songwriter variety, and Stevenson executes her vision with a clarity and poise the reminds me of many of the things that have impressed us about other rising songwriters like Sharon Van Etten.  Along with songs from her first two records, including last year’s Sit Resist, Stevenson played several new numbers that portend a strong third album in her future.  Playing before a weekend punk crowd is hardly an easy task for any musician, but Stevenson did a fairly easy job of winning this crowd over.  At age 27, it might not be accurate to say Stevenson is a punk who has “grown up” – but perhaps it’s fair to say hers is grown-up music that punks can appreciate.

We recorded this set in the same manner as the Screaming Females recording, and it is a similarly nicely-balanced recording.  Enjoy!
