Tyvek: August 26, 2017 Union Pool (Summer Thunder)

Tyvek took an uncharacteristically long break from recording between 2012’s On Triple Beams and last year’s Origin of What, but of course it was worth the wait. If you haven’t picked that one up yet, here’s your official reminder. It’s more of the raw energy you’ve come to expect from Tyvek, whose live performances also haven’t slowed down a bit in the last ten-plus years since “Frustration Rock” made them the biggest little punk band from Detroit. Tyvek is literally the most fun you can have watching a band do their thing, but throw in a mid-70s August day in Union Pool’s backyard and you’re in rock and roll heaven. Tyvek and the packed crowd sent off 2017’s Summer Thunder series in the finest form.

I recorded this set with acidjack’s Schoeps MK22’s set up right in front of the band, combined with a board feed from our man, Doug. The sound is raw—turn this one up for full effect!

Honey: June 24, 2017 Union Pool (Summer Thunder)

Brooklyn’s no-frills, full-throttle Honey are longtime NYCTaper favs. We’re used to seeing the band playing dank DIY spaces, but this outdoor sunshine day show as part of Union Pool’s Summer Thunder series literally throws some light on the band. Crisp and clear upfront sound only manages to highlight their gritty garage punk. Paired up with Sunwatchers in an opening slot for the likeminded Feral Ohms, this is a ferocious set clocking in at under nineteen minutes—perfect for Honey to get the job done. Their new album New Moody Judy hits record stores everywhere via Wharf Cat Records on September 29th and this is just the primer you need.

I recorded this with the mics set up on stage, combined with a board feed courtesy of Union Pool engineer Doug. It sounds excellent. Enjoy!

Sloppy Heads: July 14, 2017 Secret Project Robot

If you’ve been following along, you heard Sloppy Heads‘ record release show back in January here. Fast forward half a year, and here we are with a very different flavor of the ‘Heads, taking the stage at the renewed Secret Project Robot with a set that paid a sort of tribute to the night’s headliner, Oneida.

Joined by James McNew on guitar (doing double-duty that night), the Heads kicked off with “Nightbird” from their 2014 Do or Dangle EP. Beginning with the 14-minute number, replete with the kind of deep-space jamming you’d associate with early ’70s Dead, announced that this would be a different kind of set. As if to drive home the point, the band followed that up with a buoyant cover of “New Speedway Boogie” that proffered its own sequence of dense guitar theatrics. As if to flip the script further, the finished with a one-two punch of burners from Useless Smile, with “I’ll Take My Chances” into the garage rocker “Love Is A Disease.” If shorter than the last set we saw, this felt like the perfect distillation of what this band is about — a heady psych-garage mashup that’s a gas to see in the room. Go see these folks over and over again; you’ll never see quite the same thing twice.

Creeper Lagoon: August 10, 2017 Mercury Lounge

The relative enjoyability quotient of a band reunion almost always depends upon the reason for the get together. When long-departed groups decide to get together and play shows for the simple fun of it, count us in. Creeper Lagoon had a brief but productive career that petered out in 2004. After being named Spin’s Best New Artist in 1998, the band went on to produce a couple of major label releases before splitting up after a difficult European tour. The 2001 release Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday remains the peak of the Creeper Lagoon catalog and the music sounds as vibrant now as it did nearly two decades ago. After the split, all of the band members went on to successful careers and happy lives outside of the music industry. This excellent interview of band founder Sharky Laguana gives all the details, but suffice to say that all of the band member were in a good place when this reunion was contemplated and then announced late last year. After a couple of shows at the Noise Pop Fest’s 25th Anniversary in San Francisco in February, Creeper came to NYC for their first show in 16 years, a one-off at Mercury Lounge with no plans to return.

The excitement of the event was evident in the crowd from the outset as the band interactions will attest. Mercury was quite sold out and Creeper Lagoon’s energy reflected that fact throughout the night. The setlist was a lengthy run through the band’s back catalog with a nice cross-section of material. Universe was well represented as expected. The reality is that this night was exactly the reunion show you would have hoped for if you’re a Creeper Lagoon fan — fun, interactive, energetic, and well paced. If the reactions of the many fans who approached me after the show asking about the recording is any evidence, this document should also be exactly what the fans want.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted in front of the Soundboard and mixed with a superb feed provided by the band’s FOH Kim Griess. This was a rambunctious and happy crowd, although there was a near-fight audible to my left during the encore break. Other than that and some other obvious chatter, the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida: July 14, 2017 Secret Project Robot

Since our last encounter with the band at the former Secret Project Robot space nearly a year ago, Oneida has released a stellar live album (of a different Secret Project Robot show), Secret Project Robot has become a slightly-less DIY, fully licensed, and even-more-enjoyable artist-run venue, drummer Kid Millions put out the best Man Forever release of … forever, and Oneida has nearly completed a brand-new album. Not a bad year’s work for guys who still have day jobs.

We’ve seen as many Oneida performances, collectively, as just about any band, so it’s hard to make a claim about one without offending one’s memory of another. So, I won’t throw inadvertent shade on those many other performances by saying this was the very best Oneida performance, but it was easily the very best I’ve seen in the recent past, made doubly exciting by the high volume of new tuneage (owing to that new album and all). The band has worked out many of these jams live at various other shows, but we haven’t been to one where they ripped through so many at once. Further, several of these were brand-new to us, including the one title-not-known-by-me song, “It Was Me,” “All In Due Time,” and “Lay of the Land.” A couple of those new songs offer a somewhat softer vibe than Oneida jams of recent past, with one of those unnamed numbers even billed as a “love song.” Just in case you thought they might go soft, Oneida made sure to play the storming “Cock Fight” next. By the time they made it to the final song, a nearly fifteen-minute “Cedars,” all I could think about was exactly how soon I could get my hands on that new record, and see Oneida next.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip, together with a soundboard feed provided by our friends at punkcast. Other than a couple of occasional technical glitches in the vocal parts from the board feed, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy! (By the way, if you want to hear an amazing, perfect-sounding Oneida live show, don’t be a cheapskate and go buy their live album. Trust us.)

Last September, Katie and Allison Crutchfield’s first major band PS Eliot reunited for a brief tour and the results were quite impressive. The show we captured at Market Hotel was one of the best nights of last year. Ten months later, Katie’s main band Waxahatchee has released its latest album and it appears that last year’s return to the earlier emo/punk of her career influenced the sound of the new album. Out In the Storm (Merge Records) was produced by the great John Agnello whose credits include Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth, and it comes as no surprise that this is the most guitar-centric Waxahatchee album. That being said, its also undoubtedly the best sounding album in the band’s catalog and the song-writing fits perfectly with the production. The record chronicles the inner conflict of a person going through a difficult break-up and the anger and aggression and the power production matches perfectly.

Waxahatchee is currently on tour and the Brooklyn show was advertised as an album release show. Katie and Allison are originally from Alabama and currently live in Philadelphia, but each have great affection for Brooklyn. And as became obvious at this sold out Warsaw show, the borough loves them too. This was the largest show in the band’s history and they certainly rose to the occasion. With a crack band behind them, the sisters played a powerful set of material from the the last three albums mixed pretty evenly, but it was the newer tracks that brought the energy. If music is the universal emotional healing elixir, then whatever damage was suffered by the protagonist of Out In The Storm should have been thoroughly exorcised by the close of this outstanding show.

Grim Streaker: July 16, 2017 Out In the Streets Festival, The Well

There are many loud, fast, post-punk guitar bands — even ones with female frontpersons and catchy puns for names. But whatever that exact “it” is that makes one stand out, that makes the front rage and the bored people in the back stand up and pay attention, Brooklyn’s Grim Streaker has it. Obviously, the live performance counts for a lot in this genre, and Amelia Bushell anchors that bit of the proceedings, with wry onstage humor and intense, snarling delivery that’s matched by an equally relentless band. The Out In the Streets Festival, in its second year, was our intro to the band, and they flat-out tore it up for a concise 30-minute set that packed in nine songs. The band has a new EP, Girl Minority, on offer, and it’s a commendably strong slab of digital goodness, but the live show is where the money’s at. The band seems to get that, having released the video for “Guts” as a straightforward live production. Have a look below, have a listen to the set, and you’ll see what we mean.

The Mountain Movers: July 13, 2017 Union Pool

The Mountain Movers, of New Haven, CT, have been operating since the mid-2000s, but it feels like 2017 is their biggest moment yet. With the release of their self-titled LP on Chicago’s psychedelic mecca Trouble In Mind, the band have offered  a bold new statement of purpose. Compared to a decade ago, their sound is almost unrecognizable; even compared to the psychedelic-leaning but more folk-driven Apple Mountain, what you hear today is vastly different. Simply put, this band has entered the deep zone, and I hope they stay there. The material from the self-titled record is far and away the band’s heaviest yet, exploring deep grooves interspersed with approachable hooks.

That was on display at Union Pool this past Wednesday, where the band used its minutes to play only four songs, from a new(?) instrumental and the album’s sprawling opener “I Could Really See Things” to its most straightforward track, “Angels Don’t Worry.” After gigs with Chris Forsyth and Kikagaku Moyo, among others, earlier this spring, the band is in fighting shape, ready to take on the summer mini-tour that kicked off with this show.  It’s worth your time to get to know The Mountain Movers, who aren’t afraid to change course, or get weird, or get heavy. They’re at their very best when they do all three.

Sunwatchers: June 24, 2017 Union Pool (Summer Thunder)

It’s been a short couple months since we last saw Sunwatchers, but picking up on the final date of the Feral Ohms-Sunwatchers-Honey tour, the band had a few new tunes to share with us. We hadn’t previously heard “Nose Beers” or “The Works” (except on this excellent recording from last year via Southern Shelter); and the perfectly-titled “Greeneyed Pigmen (Get the Blade)” also appears to be brand new. The centerpiece of their set is a wonderful cover of Alice Coltrane’s “Ptah, The El Daoud,” from her 1970 album of the same name. Coincidentally, none other than Pharoah Sanders plays on that record and he was in town the previous night for a free show in Prospect Park along with Brooklyn Raga Massive’s tribute to John and Alice Coltrane. No doubt the spirits were in alignment for this one.

Though this was their NYC debut, Ethan Miller’s latest garage fuzzout band, Feral Ohms, began quietly releasing singles on his Silver Current label way back in 2013. What the hell took them so long? Well, Miller’s had some other stuff going on like Howlin’ Rain, Heron Oblivion, and the too-damn-short Comets on Fire reunion from that same year. So we’ll let Feral Ohms skate on their longtime absence from the East Coast. Besides, the band—that’s Miller on guitar and vocals, Josh Haynes on bass, and Chris Johnson on drums—made up for it and then some with this literally scorching Saturday afternoon outdoor set as part of Union Pool’s Summer Thunder series. They played the entire self-titled record to huge smiles all around as the packed crowd took in the sun and the tunes. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long before the ’Ohms come back this way again.
