Unicycle Loves You: February 16, 2014 Radio Bushwick – Flac/MP3/Streaming

(video stills from Maks Suski)

Unicycle Loves You have been grinding along making their fuzzy and melodic guitar-based psych-rock for almost a decade in an era among ultimately forgettable laptop and keyboard bands. In fact, they played our CMJ shows in 2009 and 2010 when they were living in Chicago, back in the days of “chill wave” and “glo-fi” and other nonsense one-dimensional buzz labels. A couple of years ago, Jim Carroll and Nicole Vitale got married and moved to New York. In June, ULY will release The Dead Age their first new album since Pop Candy called Failure an “album of the week” two years ago. Its seems though that raves from popular websites aside, the music world has finally caught up to ULY. Given the re-emergence of garage, psychedelic and psych-rock in popular circles the last couple of years, its not surprising that Spin Magazine premiered Unicycle Loves You’s new single “Face Tattoo” (our live version is streaming below). We caught the band at Radio Bushwick a few weeks back on a bill with Whiskey Bitches (previously posted here). It was nice to catch up again with Jim and Nicole and we are extremely pleased to report that they are playing better than ever — with an energy and immediacy that portends for big things in the very near future. Spin premieres aside, the new songs are all pretty tight and destined for a higher profile for a band that has deserved the recognition for at least the last half-decade. Unicycle Loves You have a few upcoming gigs, including Shea Stadium, Cake Shop and again at Radio Bushwick, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on a small stand directly in front of the stage to capture the instruments and mixed with a soundboard feed to fortify the vocals. The results are outstanding, enjoy!

Amen Dunes: February 8, 2014 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Amen Dunes will release their new album Love (Sacred Bones) on May 13, and in late February they released a song “Lonely Richard” as a preview. Early in February, we captured the band’s short opening slot at Glasslands and the set featured two new songs including “Rocket Flare” (streaming below). The new Amen Dunes album isn’t like the previous two which were essentially Damon McMahon’s bedroom studio project. Love is a fully formed studio work produced by members of Godspeed and featuring multiple guests. But McMahon hasn’t abandoned what had made this group so compelling from the start and what impressed us so much for two recordings back in 2012 — a sort of mysterious, reverb-laden psychedelic sound that conjures up a litany of influences while not entirely lifting from any of them.

I recorded this set with our installed Naiant rig and mixed with an excellent soundboard feed provided by house FOH Josh. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Hiss Golden Messenger: March 2, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Standing in the packed house, at an early show on Oscar night, I got the sense that we may be witnessing Hiss Golden Messenger hitting a natural peak. There’s the anecdotal information: a glowing Daily Beast write-up (among much other favorable press), the sold-out Mercury Lounge on a Sunday night, even people in their twenties who knew the words to every song. But the greater thing is the performances themselves, more assured and powerful at every encounter. We’ve covered HGM in a variety of configurations — large full band, small duo/trio and solo, not to mention fronting Magnolia Electric Co.  — but I’m not sure I’ve seen or heard a stronger set that this one. On this night Taylor drew from a deep well; you could hear it in every note. You could see it on the faces in the crowd, too, both the newcomers and the old, marveling at just how much he has to give.

There were a few rarities in tonight’s setlist, including the old song (we’re fairly sure is called) “Lucia” and the Songs: Ohia number “What Comes After the Blues”. Taylor also shared some songs from his forthcoming album, which he was in town to master. We got both “Southern Grammar”, which he shared with us at Glasslands back in August, as well as a new one from that whose title we don’t know “The Lateness of Dancers”, which was new to us (thanks to commenter Felice for the heads-up on the title). If you missed it, Mike has also been promoting the Paradise of Bachelors re-release of his LP Bad Debt, a lo-fi masterpiece that sourced many of the songs that would later re-appear in fully-realized form on Poor Moon and elsewhere. The man standing there before a crowd that knew his name felt, in some ways, a far cry from the lone artist in his kitchen, hammering out Bad Debt while his baby slept. Perhaps Taylor isn’t that exact same man, but a better version of him. An artist coming, like the slow bloom of this spring, fully into his own.

I recorded this set with the house mix by head engineer Kevin Mazzarelli, plus Schoeps MK41 microphones and a Sound Devices preamp to provide ambiance. The quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Fleshtones: February 27, 2014 The Grand Victory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

March 9, 2014
By

Fleshtones Jaime Oriz

The last time I saw the Fleshtones was in the late 90s at the dear departed Brownies on Avenue A. At that point, I had seen the band more than a dozen times including a handful of times at Brownies itself. On this particular night though, the Fleshtones ended their memorable show in a unique fashion. As the last song came to a close the band unplugged their instruments, continued to play and walked through the crowd to the front of the venue and out the door to Avenue A. In front of Brownies waiting for the band was a flatbed truck onto which the band climbed and while they continued to play the truck moved south down the avenue and out of sight.

The Fleshtones live have always been a fun and imaginative band that not only celebrates the music but breaks down the fourth wall and involves the crowd in their show. All these years later, the band is still playing, recording and spreading their own version of garage rock around the world. A search for recent Fleshtones videos on youtube finds a bunch of stuff from Spain, Italy and Australia — the band remains big overseas if not remaining underground in the US. The Fleshtones are currently on tour in support of their new album Wheel Of Talent (Yep Roc) and we caught the opening night and CD release show at The Grand Victory. I entered the venue with a bit of trepidation that perhaps the Fleshtones were not quite as animated or energetic as I remember from the old days. But within seconds of the beginning of their set as Peter Zaremba walked the length of the bar, it became obvious that while the band is a little greyer and maybe a step slower, the Fleshtones still deliver the goods live. The set contained a healthy dose of Wheel material, but also welcome were some old nuggets including “Theme from The Vindicators (1980), and “The Way I Feel” from their first album Blast Off! (1978). The latter brought a dedication to the album’s producer Marty Thau who passed away a few weeks ago. But this was a night for celebration of the new album as Zaremba led intermittent human spinning wheels of talent to point to the next singer in the set. The result was a lengthy set (27 songs!) that was deserving of the Fleshtones of any era. The band may not have been escorted from the venue in a flatbed truck, but the infectious energy and enthusiasm is still very much present for the live Fleshtones.

I recorded this set by mounting the Sennheiser cards on the video projection shelf about 15 feet from the stage and mixed with a fine board feed. The room was instrument-heavy and the board is vocal heavy, but mixed together the results are superb. Enjoy!

Whiskey Bitches: February 16, 2014 Radio Bushwick – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I like bands that make me smile. At several points during the Whiskey Bitches set at Radio Bushwick last weekend I found myself grinning at the band’s infectious punk party anthems. The band is a relatively new trio that are making a quick splash locally. They won the Deli Magazine’s year old poll in December and have been gigging out a lot lately with a bunch of shows to come — we saw them again at Cake Shop on Thursday. And Whiskey Bitches have done all this with just two recorded tracks available as an EP on Bandcamp. We’re streaming “Funemployed” below, but the set included a bunch of new songs which the band will be recording in the next few weeks. Expect to hear a lot about Whiskey Bitches on this site and others, they’re going places.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in front of the stage and mixed with a board feed. We’re a little concerned that the high ceilings caused a little boominess in this recording, but overall its a excellent list. Enjoy!

PUP
(still from this video)

The Toronto punk scene is one of the current hotbeds for music, and PUP is the latest band to emerge internationally. PUP won the CBC Best New Artist award in 2013, and the band recently signed to legendary US indie Side One Dummy Records. The band returned from a tour of Britain where they headlined at the NME Awards, and began another tour with a headlining show at Cameo Gallery on Friday night. As we reported back in October, this is not a band to miss. The band’s energy was at max throughout the set, as they rifled through a set of material from their album, one old request, and two punk covers. The band’s cover of Jay Reatard’s “My Shadow” made a bit of a splash on the web this month and the live version was as powerful as expected, but it was the surprise encore of the Dead Kennedys’ “Too Drunk To Fuck” that impressed with its humor and faithfulness to the original. We’re streaming that below. PUP’s current tour starts out West, crosses the US and lands in SXSW before coming East. PUP will play the Mercury Lounge on March 25. The album will be released on April 8.

We recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted high in front of the board and mixed with a fine matrix feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Cian Nugent: February 19, 2014 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I first saw Cian Nugent live last September at Hopscotch Music Festival, where we had the pleasure of seeing multiple sides of him both as a solo artist and with his “supergroup” Desert Heat. To date, the Irish guitarist hasn’t played regularly in the U.S., so there was no way I was going to miss him supporting fantastic new album at Union Pool. Here, the faithful were rewarded with Nugent working through solo versions of several standout tracks from his latest, Born With The Caul, as well as material from the seven inch release “Hire Purchase”, the only electric number of the night. The Wednesday night crowd rewarded Cian’s focus and concentration with an ample amount of their own, turning this sometimes-raucous room into a reverent space. With any luck, the reception from this tour will bring Nugent back to New York more frequently. This great artist’s catalog has much more ground to cover, as Pitchfork so presciently observed in a Marc Masters/Grayson Currin “Out Door” post recently.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by Union Pool’s head engineer Ian MacCarthy, together with Schoeps MK41 microphones to provide mild room ambiance. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Jonathan Wilson: February 12, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

February 18, 2014

Jonathan Wilson is a musician’s musician. When artists are in Southern California they invariably visit Jonathan’s studio, which was founded in Laurel Canyon, moved to a larger space in LA, and is credited with rejuvenating the music genre named after the region. Jonathan has produced albums from a variety of artists including Dawes, Father John Misty, Bonnie Prince Billy and Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. His studio has also hosted studio jam sessions with an even wider variety of artists. He even recently toured with the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and has performed and recorded at Weir’s TRI Studios. So it comes as no surprise that Jonathan Wilson’s solo albums often contain a who’s-who of special guests along with the best available studio musicians. Jonathan’s most recent album Fanfare (Downtown Records) has been hailed as one of the best of 2013, and rightfully so. It expands upon the material from his well-received and successful debut album, 2011’s Gentle Spirit. While Spirit certainly cemented his Laurel Canyon influences, Fanfare is a more diverse and more intense album overall. At Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night, we were not surprised that Jonathan Wilson’s band contained a striking amount of talent. The set began with the album’s title track and when the full band entered the song, it was obvious that the night’s musicianship would be paramount. Jonathan’s set was heavy on Fanfare material but also included several show-stoppers from his first album and an obscure Bob Welch-era Fleetwood Mac cover.. There were multiple highlights to report, including the set closing “Valley of the Silver Moon” which featured show-opener the legendary Laraaji and which extended to twenty minutes. We’re streaming our personal highlight, the extended version of “Natural Rhapsody” which contained a mid-song jam that resembled Miles Davis “Solea” from Sketches of Spain. We are also streaming the penultimate track, the straight forward folk-rocker from Fanfare, “Moses Pain”. Jonathan Wilson’s tour continues through the end of February in the South and Southwest before he heads to Europe for much of April. We’ll next see Jonathan when he plays the annual Mountain Jam Festival in June.

The sound quality of this recording is simply stunning, and that is because the show was mixed by the legendary British FOH Spike Jones. You’ll know you’re in for something special when you hear the first roll of the drums in the very first track. We used the Sennheiser cards for room feel and mixed it with the feed to create a recording for which we’re incredibly fortunate to have been able to capture. Enjoy!

Nicole Atkins: February 13, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

February 17, 2014
By

Nicole Bowery Will Oliver
[photo by Will Oliver – courtesy of We All Want Someone to Shout For]

Large swaths of my childhood were spent in the backseat of a late model Chrysler listening to WABC AM radio on long roadtrips. Top Forty music in the 1970s was a lot different than today’s popular music — that is to say that it was far more diverse and significantly less predictable. WABC played only the current hits, which in any given year in the 1970s could have included funk, disco, folk, laurel canyon, psychedelia, brit pop, soul, and countless other styles. You could hear Janis Ian “At Seventeen” followed by “Do The Hustle” followed by solo Paul Simon. You could hear KC and the Sunshine Band segue into Marvin Gaye and then directly into the Eagles. It was an era of sexual and racial liberation and the music reflected that reality. But in all that diversity were some consistent sounds. The advent and growth in the technology of synthesized and electric keyboards meant that every band played with the new toys often to excess. And if the 70s pop is known for any particular instrument other than the Fender Rhoades, its the pronounced bass guitar in many memorable tracks. Growing up listening to this music on the AM radio was an education that endures today — my musical interests are diverse and unpredictable.

While Nicole Atkins wasn’t actually born until the tail end of that decade, her music has always shown an influence from classic 70s pop. As she grew up near the Jersey coast, perhaps her influences were in part fashioned from hearing countless transistor radios blasting on the beach in Summer. And while the 70s sound has always bubbled under the surface of her contemporary pop, Nicole’s brilliant new album Slow Phaser isn’t as much influenced by, but is in fact an homage to the 70s AM radio represented so well by WABC on those long summer drives. There are moments in the album — whether its the prominent Donna Summer influence in the break in “Who Killed the Moonlight?”, or the disco-era bass line of “Girl You Look Amazing”, or the 70s-era harmonies in “Cool People” (streaming below), or the synthesizer rush in the middle of “What Do You Know?” or the “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” guitar strum in “Sin Song” or the reference to an “operator” in “The Worst Hangover” — where the homage is clear as day. But Slow Phaser is much more than the sum of its influences. It is the master work of an artist who has a clear understanding of who she is and how she arrived at the point where she can successfully crowd-source her album, choose her band, and dictate the production. Gone are the early career times of the major-label albatross. Slow Phaser is Nicole Atkins finally realizing her identity, in full control, and its truly glorious.

At Bowery Ballroom on Thursday night, the Slow Phaser Tour began with a show that combined all of these aspects. Nicole took the stage in a 70s-style kimono and played the role of the chanteuse. She’s ditched the guitar and left the music to a band of ringers and these guys can really play — check out the dual guitar solos in “The Tower”. The entire new album sans one track was played along with only three older numbers. But this show was all about Slow Phaser and the live versions were as kinetic as the studio album. The band nailed all of the special parts of the album so expertly and when I closed my eyes I swear I could hear WABC all over again.

I recorded this set in the usual manner — Sennheiser cards mounted in the balcony and combined with an expertly mixed board feed. There is some minor static in the left channel in first two songs from what sounds like a faulty guitar amp. But it was fixed. Otherwise, the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Dead Meadow: February 11, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Before there was Wooden Shjips or Black Angels or Black Mountain, there was Dead Meadow who in the late 90s began to play psych rock in Washington DC in an era when the local hard rock was dominated by Dischord bands. Despite the stylistic clash with the music of the day, Dead Meadow nevertheless succeeded on talent and ingenuity. Fifteen years, a few personnel changes, and a move to LA later, the band is still producing intense stoner rock and recently released their eighth studio album Warble Womb (Xemu Records). Dead Meadow hasn’t played NYC in several years, but this week they were in town for two shows. We caught the Bowery Ballroom show on Tuesday night where Dead Meadow worked through a ninety minute set of exactly what we came to hear — a mix of old and new material, some spacey jamming, and outstanding sound quality. Given the weather, the crowd was not as packed as might have been expected in nicer climes, but the fans were certainly animated. There seemed to be a duel between the guy calling out for older material and the guy who yelled “play the record”. I guess the newer fan won, because the band added “1000 Dreams” from Warble even though it wasn’t on the setlist. We are streaming that track below because the band nailed the off-the-cuff selection. Dead Meadow’s tour continues through February with multiple East Coast and Midwestern dates, see “tour” at their website.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue, with the Sennheiser cards mounted in our perch to the left of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. We were fortunate that Dead Meadow FOH Chris Preston was with the band and provided a customized feed with well balanced guitars and effects. The result is that the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
