Good things come to those who wait. I arrived at 285 Kent at about 7:30pm on Saturday night prepared for a seven-band marathon show, but not quite expecting that the headliner would not take the stage until 2:45am the following morning. But Deafheaven at any ungodly hour is still an intense and entirely worthwhile experience. While quite a few of the overflowing sold-out crowd didn’t make it to the end, the space gave the diehards the option to get right upfront and experience the manic energy of George Clarke face to face. And George didn’t disappoint, getting right into the first few rows for most of the show. I’ll admit having a hard time keeping up the energy as their hour-long set pushed until nearly four a.m., but the band had no such problem. We’ve seen Deafheaven twice before and each time we were breathless even from the back of the room at Saint Vitus. But upfront and personal, the experience is that much more fervent. For the set, the band worked through virtually all of Sunbather (sans one instrumental track) — the album that saw them at or near the top of virtually every single published Best-of list for 2013. Deafheaven begins a two-month cross-country tour of the US in a few weeks, and their next appearance in NYC will be at Governor’s Ball. Like 285 Kent, the days of seeing Deafheaven from a few feet away in a DIY venue have pretty much ended, but having had this last experience, I’m ok with that.

I recorded this set in my usual manner in this venue, with the Sennheiser cards mounted on the beam near the stage and mixed with a board feed. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Deafheaven: July 2, 2013 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Deafheaven’s new album Sunbather is a game-changer in so many ways. Its been called “a modern classic” and a “pinnacle of American black metal” by preeminent metal writer Brandon Stosuy. The album’s universal critical acclaim and the increased crowds that will inevitably gather for the band’s uber-intense live shows mean ultimately that Deafheaven is on a very steep trajectory to the apex of its genre. There will not be (m)any more nights like Tuesday at Saint Vitus, where the packed crowd saw the band deliver a show for the ages. Opening with a quiet guitar introduction, the band then crashed into Sunbather’s first track “Dream House”, and the level of energy did not subside until the band and the audience came up for a breath of air before the final song. One of Deafheaven’s strengths is their ability to seamlessly transition from one apparent genre to another. We are streaming “The Pecan Tree” which encapsulates this ability multiple times within one track. The song opens with a dead start directly into a “screamo” black metal segment before evolving mid-track into a melodic post-rock guitar passage and then concludes in full Deafheaven mode while vocalist George Clarke belts out what is perhaps the darkest lyrics of the entire album “I am no one. I cannot love. It’s in my blood.” Deafheaven’s current tour concludes with two shows in the Midwest — Cleveland on Friday and Chicago on Saturday. If you live in one of those two cities, we recommend that you not miss this band.

I recorded this show with the Sennheiser cardioids set up in the rear of the room and mixed it with a board feed. The strengths of both sources compliment each other and the result is an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Deafheaven: February 22, 2013 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I have attended thousands of concerts over the years, so its not very often when a performer literally takes my breath away. At Saint Vitus on Friday night, Deafheaven was one of the few bands that effected me this way. The band opened their set with the first song of their debut album Roads to Judah “Violet” which begins with a very un-Metal like dual-guitar melodic passage before it crashes into the song proper, and features the intense screaming vocals of lead singer George Clarke. From that point forward, it was hard to take my eyes off Clarke whose magnetic stage presence and breathtaking vocals demand awe-inspired attention. And when Deafheaven begins a song, it doesn’t end quickly. The nearly hour-long set contained five songs — the first 3 tracks from Judah, a Mogwai dual-cover (streaming below) and a new song from their forthcoming album Sunbather. Throughout the show, Clarke’s unrelenting energy never wavered, and at its conclusion it was likely the audience and not the singer who needed oxygen. Deafheaven is from San Francisco, but came all the way East for this one-off show in support of Sacrament and Sannhet. They will tour Europe in April, dates here.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Sannhet set and the sound is equally superb. Enjoy!
