The National Added to Central Park Summerstage

May 21, 2008
By

The National will play Summerstage on Monday August 4, it was announced today. Tickets for this show go on sale on Friday May 30. Yeasayer is the opener.

This week The National released The Virginia, an EP of b-sides and outtakes from Boxer, their acclaimed 2007 release. They will also appear as the opening band for REM and Modest Mouse at Madison Square Garden in June.

We expect tickets to go quickly for this Central Park gig. Our recording of The National’s outstanding show at BAM in February is one of the most popular recordings ever featured on nyctaper.

New Fiery Furnaces Live Album Features NYCTAPER Recordings

May 19, 2008
By

We spoke today via email with Jason Lowenstein from the Fiery Furnaces. There was a rumor floating around the official Furnaces forum (temporarily offline for upgrades) that the new Furnaces live album Remember was culled entirely from “bootlegs”. This rumor is not completely true. The recordings that provide the raw material for Remember include over a dozen recorded by Jason himself, three multitrack recordings and five recordings from nyctaper.

Obviously, we are thrilled to have contributed material to an official release for one of our favorite bands. This kind of news makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Remember will be released in August by Thrill Jockey, but the album is finished and pressed and copies will be available at Fiery Furnaces merch tables at concerts this summer.

Visit Fiery Furnaces website or MySpace page for more concert dates.

The Concert for a Healthy City is a benefit being held at Webster Hall this coming Wednesday night May 21. The excellent band Oakley Hall have just been added to the bill.

The Concert’s mission is stated on their site:
“Concert for a Healthy City is a collaborative effort among student-run free clinics in New York. We strive to bring about awareness of the growing healthcare access problems faced by New Yorkers as well as raise funds to support efforts to provide primary care to those in need.”

More information about times and tickets is available at the Webster Hall site [HERE].

Steve Wynn to Perform “Days of Wine and Roses” in Entirety

May 16, 2008
By

Steve Wynn was the frontman for the early 80’s post-punk band The Dream Syndicate. Their first full album, 1982’s Days of Wine and Roses is one of the best albums from this period and was influential in the west coast music that followed in the late 80s and early 90s.

Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3 will perform Days of Wine and Roses from start to finish at Maxwell’s on July 25, 2008. As Steve Wynn has an open taping policy, we will be there to record this excellent event.

Steve Wynn has pursued a solo career since the Dream Syndicate ended in 1989, garnering enough cred to merit a tribute album (From a Man of Mysteries) with covers by bands such as The Silos, Minus 5, Chuck Prophet, and Sid Griffin of The Long Riders.

Please support Steve Wynn and purchase his official releases from the store at his website.

Antietam and Ladybug Transistor — Free Concert in front of Brooklyn Public Library

May 14, 2008
By

I guess this gig makes perfect sense, since Tara Key from Antietam is in fact a librarian, but we find this one pretty interesting and slightly amusing. The Saturday afternoon readers’ attempts to “shh” the noise will be futile, as Antietam’s powerful post-punk will be on display across the Plaza.

Who: Antietam and Ladybug Transistor
Where: Brooklyn Public Library — Grand Army Plaza Branch [MAP]
When: Saturday May 31, 2008
Time: 2 p.m.

Market Hotel Cases Dismissed

May 13, 2008
By

Today in a Manhattan courtroom, four of the eight charges against the Market Hotel arising from the legal problems encountered in February were dismissed outright. The other four matters were given an administrative adjournment to a date in June, and are expected to follow the same course.

A judge ruled that the Showpaper benefit held on February 28, 2008 did not violate the “bottle club” statute, and granted the attorney’s motion to dismiss the cases on both technical and legal grounds.

nyctaper Anniversary Concert: Quick Review

May 12, 2008

A beautiful day, and a great time had by all. We had an intimate but enthusiastic crowd and all four bands performed terrific sets. Thanks to all the bands, and to Pianos!

The entire show was recorded and I’ll be offering all four sets in the very near future.

Chris Difford at Maxwell’s May 13

May 11, 2008
By

He is one-half of arguably the greatest songwriting team of the last two decades of the twentieth century. Chris Difford penned such Squeeze classics at “Tempted”, “Pulling Mussels From the Shell” and “Cool for Cats”. The latter features his distinctive accented baritone in a song that influenced an entire generation of Brit-pop and powerpop bands.

In between Squeeze tours, Chris released his latest solo album The Last Temptation Of Chris in March, and returns to the U.S. this week to perform several solo shows. We will be at the show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken on Tuesday May 13, 2008. We emailed Chris and secured his permission to record the show for nyctaper. Squeeze returns to the States this Summer for a series of dates nationally.

Here are Chris Difford’s May dates:
May 12 2008 8:00 Iron Horse Northampton MA
May 13 2008 8:00 Maxwell’s Hoboken NJ
May 14 2008 8:00 Water Color Cafe Larchmont NY
