Tyvek: August 26, 2017 Union Pool (Summer Thunder)

August 27, 2017
By

Tyvek took an uncharacteristically long break from recording between 2012’s On Triple Beams and last year’s Origin of What, but of course it was worth the wait. If you haven’t picked that one up yet, here’s your official reminder. It’s more of the raw energy you’ve come to expect from Tyvek, whose live performances also haven’t slowed down a bit in the last ten-plus years since “Frustration Rock” made them the biggest little punk band from Detroit. Tyvek is literally the most fun you can have watching a band do their thing, but throw in a mid-70s August day in Union Pool’s backyard and you’re in rock and roll heaven. Tyvek and the packed crowd sent off 2017’s Summer Thunder series in the finest form.

I recorded this set with acidjack’s Schoeps MK22’s set up right in front of the band, combined with a board feed from our man, Doug. The sound is raw—turn this one up for full effect!

The Dead C: September 20, 2016 First Unitarian Congregational Society

The Dead C
[Photo via]

Do The Dead C need any introduction? The band’s status among devotees of noise and Kiwi rock is near mythological. And their long absence from performing in the U.S. has confounded younger listeners who might have discovered the band in the mid-aughts when Ba Da Bing issued the compilation Vain, Erudite, and Stupid and then started reissuing long-out-of-print classics like DR503 and Eusa Kills. This year saw the release of Trouble, comprised of five twitching, droning, and pummeling tracks that thwart any attempt at dissection or categorization. Having long abandoned any semblance of traditional song structure in favor of visceral, blown-eardrum improvisation resembling the band’s most famed track “Driver UFO,” Trouble might yet be The Dead C’s rock opus. So to say the anticipation for their brief September tour (hitting only Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Louisville’s Cropped Out Festival, and Los Angeles) was high would be to massively understate it. Despite the absence of drummer Robbie Yeats, who unfortunately was unable to make the tour, this hour-plus set from Michael Morley and Bruce Russell is a tribute to the band’s endurance. Backed with crashing and ebbing prerecorded drum tracks from Yeats, the duo stretch the bounds of guitar-based music, resulting in a performance that is utterly and uniquely The Dead C.

Acidjack and I recorded this from a central location in the church, combined with a board feed from the engineer Gus. The sound is outstanding; the performance extraordinary. Enjoy!

Enemy Waves: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

It’s a rarer and rarer thing these days to discover a truly local phenomenon, especially in rock(ish) music, where even if a band doesn’t tour nationwide, their music can become the province of bloggers in Sydney and Tokyo even if their music is made in a basement in Anaheim. Well, Enemy Waves remain, for the most part, such a phenomenon, a band whose experimental prowess and musical bona fides haven’t yet overcome the fact that, to put it bluntly, these guys have a few other things going on in life. When we saw these guys do the Hopscotch Music Festival in 2014, we were blown away; the addition of Thurston Moore was an easy bonus.

This show featured a couple of songs from the Hopscotch outing, plus a couple of new numbers. Once again, the band showed how adept they are at improvisation, one of many reasons why they belonged at the Threelobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular (other sets here). While the band’s recorded output remains minimal to date, hopefully a set like this is an invitation for people to encourage them to do more (maybe even on Three Lobed(?)). As with everything that went on during this day-long extravaganza, this set was special, in this case, as a fairly rare chance to catch a band whose name should be (much) more widely known.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other sets of the day, with multiple soundboard channels, Schoeps MK22 microphones onstage, and MBHO cardiod microphones in the crowd. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Eleven Twenty Nine: July 23, 2016 Trans-Pecos

The beautiful thing about seeing a Tom Carter-related project is you never quite know what you’re going to get, but you know it will be transportive. It could be anything from his trio set with Chris Corsano and Carter Thornton late last year, to his ambient/drone work with Barry Weisblat, to one of his haunting solo guitar sets — whatever you see, you will be glad you did. On this night, we saw one of Carter’s best-loved projects, Eleven Twenty Nine, originally a collaboration with fellow guitarist Marc Orleans which has yielded an impressive album on Northern Spy Records and a followup on Drawing Room Records.

For this special performance at Trans-Pecos, Carter and Orleans were joined by Jimy SeiTang on bass and Rob Smith on drums, both of whom have seen time in our favorites Rhyton. The set consisted of three distinct improvisational pieces, each a rich, engaging tapestry of sound that blended the aesthetics of rock, free jazz and ambient music in the way for which these players have become known. What is an undulating, complex beast of a song, composed improvisationally out of many disciplines becomes a transcendent whole. Witness, for example, the climactic guitar at the end of the first piece, or the subtle, searching quality to the beginning of the last. You can certainly enjoy hearing it happen on a recording, but seeing these guys do their thing live is without parallel.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones up front, Naiant X-X microphones onstage, and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Hans Chew: July 23, 2016 Trans-Pecos

July 27, 2016

IMG_0888

We’ve been following Hans Chew for a while now, since he first played our CMJ show in 2012. Back then, Hans spent the set behind the piano, playing his boogie-driven tunes like modern madcap Jerry Lee Lewis. By the time Hans showed up for this Trans-Pecos show in 2016, he was preparing to release a stellar new album, Unknown Sire, with our friends Divide By Zero records. But when we talked to Hans before this show, he explained to us that he had been so motivated by reading a recent biography of Neil Young that he decided to take an entirely different approach this time — and that for this show, he had an entire new album to draw from. As a result, Hans played the role of guitar lead this time, and he shared three new jams that take clear inspiration from Young’s most daring guitar efforts. As he led off with the sprawling “Cruikshanks,” we could tell this was a very different Hans Chew indeed, one who reveled in extended guitar solos and longer narratives. If any of the three songs fit most closely with Chew’s previous efforts, it was probably the upbeat, honky-tonk inspired “Open Sea,” which itself clocked in at over six minutes, and led into “Freely,” which began as a midtempo rocker before exploding into a fiery solo at the end. Though we’re thrilled for the upcoming record, one has to hope this latest material doesn’t have to sit in the hopper for too long, either.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones close to the stage, Naiant X-X omnis split wide on stage, and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Horse Lords: July 23, 2016 Trans-Pecos

For most of its nearly ten-year history, this website has been a collaboration, reflecting the individual tastes and contributions of those who contribute to it. In the past two years, it’s hard to overstate the contribution that Eric PH has made to the team, introducing not only a number of great recordings, but a slew of new bands to the mix. Horse Lords, of Baltimore, are one of his very best finds, and since he first saw them in 2015, we’ve been hoping to do something with them directly. The band headlined a stacked bill this past Saturday at Trans-Pecos, which felt like a welcome, air-conditioned respite from the steaming heat outside. But more important than the change in temperature was the change in perspective, as each of the forward-thinking acts on the bill reminded us of how powerful experimental music can be. While too many bands of their ilk toil in obscurity, Horse Lords have received their due of late, in the form of stellar reviews for their latest album, Interventions (released by NYC label Northern Spy).

The band’s heady combination of guitar, bass, drums, and at-times keys, sax, and second percussion isn’t the easiest to describe; it has a tinge of desert blues to it, the controlled chaos of free jazz, the music-school time shifts of math rock and the propulsiveness of, well, rock. The band brought all of that complexity to the stage and didn’t miss a beat, holding our attention through the latest album’s first single, “Truthers” straight through to the album’s centerpiece, “Toward the Omega Point,” at the end. As Eric PH pointed out in his review of the 2015 show, the band members know how to fill the spaces in the music when they need to, but also know when to leave some open air. We were floored by the band’s musicianship, their control, and their ability to craft a setlist that hung together through a diverse range of sounds. For anyone who cares about where music is going next, be sure to put Horse Lords on your list of things to see.

I recorded this set with a set of Schoeps MK22 open cardioids near the front of the room, a pair of Naiant X-X omnis split onstage, and a soundboard feed from the night’s engineer. The sound quality is phenomenal. Enjoy!

Dead and Company: July 3, 2016 Boulder CO

July 6, 2016

It was exactly a year ago when all of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead played their last shows together in Chicago. “Fare Thee Well” was a goodbye of sorts, but it certainly wasn’t the end of their careers or the end of the music. Later that year, the formation of “Dead and Company” brought together Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart with pop star John Mayer. The combination appeared odd at first, but Mayer seems to have dedicated himself to not only learning the material but adapting to the ebb and flow of a traditional Dead show. The band’s second full tour came through Colorado on Saturday and NYCTaper veteran hiandlo was out in the region on vacation and caught the show.

Our readers who have followed our coverage of various “post-Dead” bands know that we have two pet peeves among the various good and bad aspects of these bands — we can’t stand the mindless aping of Jerry Garcia’s style by various guitarists employed to fill his shoes, and cringe at the simply unlistenable vocals of Phil Lesh. Fortunately, Dead and Company have neither of those two issues. John Mayer’s guitar playing borrows heavily from classic rock and blues oeuvres, but it has always been his own. Mayer isn’t copying Garcia when he plays Dead songs, he’s placing his own stamp on the music and that makes all the difference.  And vocally, although Bob Weir has aged quite a bit, the combination of his still-formidable vocals with Mayer and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti provides Dead and Company with solid singing that never reaches the cringworthiness of Lesh.

At this Boulder show, the band got off to a slow start, literally. Weir’s pacing is still painfully behind, so that “Stranger” was at times like playing a 45 record at 33. But fortunately the band kept it up after that and the tempo was never really an issue after the opener. The first set highlights included a sweet “Bird Song” with shared vocals, and Mayer’s take on “Speedway”, which allowed his blues roots to shine. The second set’s highlight was a really quite moving version of “He’s Gone” with “Smokestack” sandwiched in the middle. And although the band did offer a fairly truncated “Dark Star” out of “Space”, there were some out-there moments that made the trip worthwhile — reminding us that while this current incarnation isn’t ever going to be the Grateful Dead, Dead and Company is serving the music well and keeping the spirit alive.

Dead and Company continue to tour throughout this month, dates here.

hiandlo recorded this set from a prime front of board location with the “open card” Schoeps caps and the sound quality is simply superb. Enjoy!

You can’t always be sure that a band that sounds good in the studio — and Journalism sounds great on their debut, Faces — will measure up live. We’re extra-excited to report that Journalism are one of those bands, and then some, and we were grateful to host them at Trans-Pecos on a recent Saturday night. Lead singer/guitarist Kegan Zema is a savvy live performer, one who works to look and act the part, and the crack band of Mike Greene (guitar), Owen Keiter (bass) and Brendan Mehan (drums) has a well-oiled and well-practiced sound. Sound-wise, I hear a little bit of Television and Ride in them, as well as some later younger bands like DIIV and Cloud Nothings. This show led off with a new song, “Passenger,” before taking us through most of Faces. The band saved their best song (so far) for last, the propulsive, engaging “Faces I,” a rather dark take on the business of rock n’ roll itself, especially coming from a young band. In this day and age I wouldn’t disagree with Zema’s cynicism, but for his sake and ours, I hope Journalism keep on finding this ride to be worth it.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones at the stage lip, plus Schoeps MK41V supercardiod mics on the room and a stereo soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Nathan Bowles: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

Nathan Bowles has made in appearance in all kinds of bands connected to Three Lobed Recordings in one way or another, from Pelt to the Black Twig Pickers to Hiss Golden Messenger to Steve Gunn‘s band to his own fine work. And that’s not even solely as a banjo player, either; Bowles is an accomplished drummer, as his work with Gunn in particular has shown. As essential as he has been to the greater Three Lobed family, it was of course an honor to have him for the label’s sixteenth birthday party.

Originally slated to be a bit of a reprise of his 2014 duo performance with Daniel Bachman here at King’s in Raleigh, NC, this set ended up being a special kind of Bowles solo show, as he tried out some new material slated to appear on his forthcoming album on Paradise of Bachelors. The thirteen-minute “I Miss My Dog,” which Bowles recently performed at Pickathon, is as powerful a statement as he has made musically, and furthers the notion that his command of this instrument is not about some kind of “revival” but rather a true evolution. You have only to listen to the short and sweet “Burnt Ends Rag” that came after it to understand what a talent Bowles is, and why we’ll be so fortunate to see him in so many different settings in the years to come.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings of the day, with a soundboard feed from engineer Justin Perrachon and a combination of onstage and audience mics. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Sunburned Hand of the Man: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

May 3, 2016

This was our second North Carolina journey with Sunburned Hand of the Man, having witnessed the awesome spectacle that was their 2014 Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU day show at Hopscotch. Like the recent show in New York City that we caught at Union Pool, this night at the Three Lobed Recordings Sweet Sixteen Spectacular found the out/noise collective taking more of a song-based approach. Which isn’t to say, in any way, that this was somehow a “traditional” performance; like anything Sunburned and many things Three Lobed, this performance celebrated the experimental and the expeditionary, with those American flags in the backdrop an ironic comment on the freak flags that these artists so willfully fly. Once again, we got to witness a furious version of “The Jaybird,” but other than that and “Double Purity,” this was an entirely different performance than at Union Pool. It meant something for a band of Sunburned’s underground stature to be here alongside such a diverse array of Three Lobed veterans, from Nathan Bowles’ forward-looking Appalachian banjo performance to Steve Gunn’s solo guitar set to Mary Lattimore and Elysse Thebner’s ambient harp and keyboard set. Among all that great music, perhaps nobody more than Sunburned (and OK, Bardo Pond) stood for all the heads in the audience, the unique gathering of the like-minded that this label has brought together. Once again, it was a divine thing.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other performances of the day, with 8 channels of combined soundboard feed from engineer Brad Womack, onstage microphones, and audience microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
