Diamond Rings: December 4, 2010 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The man who I anointed the male Lady GaGa (followed by Pitchfork co-opting the comparison in their review of Special Affections) after he played the NYCTaper 2010 CMJ Show was at it again on a Saturday night early this month, and he remains on a roll. Glasslands has had some especially strong rosters lately, in part thanks to the efforts of PopGun Booking, and this was no exception, with ArpLine, Austra and Body Language also on the bill. But the tall, blonde man from Toronto was clearly the main draw. Don’t think that a one-man act cannot put on a rock-n-roll show; John O’Regan (Mr. Diamond Rings himself) gave that the lie big-time as he danced, played guitar, spazzed out, and rocked out all over the stage. If this is what he is capable of with no backup of any kind on the Glasslands stage, he might just be scary at the next level; even at this show, a creepy guy in the front was photographing his shoes and (from where I was sitting, at least) his crotch. But you can’t fault people for getting a little creepy – the sexual energy of O’Regan’s set is undeniable, and unlike really anything crossing most indie rock stages these days. He vamps, he flaunts, he owns the place. And O’Regan is about to gain a much wider audience for his music, too, as he begins at tour as the opening act for Robyn (tour dates here). She’d better be ready, or O’Regan just might blow her off the stage.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Glasslands staff and the DPA microphones. Other than some light distortion on the board feed during one track, the sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

The National: December 8, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The National last played NYC at Terminal 5 in July, a concert we covered for the site. Its hard to imagine that we would next see a band of that stature in Maxwell’s, but the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows bring surprises of all sizes. Although we were clued into this appearance earlier in the week (and the Village Voice spread our tweet), it was still pretty surreal to see the National take the stage in front of a hundred or so people. The band and their mini horn section managed to fit pretty comfortably on the stage, and they worked through a shortened version of the standard set. In a brief conversation I had with Bryce before the show, he remembered that the band had played Maxwell’s several times early in their history, and there were references during the show to those times. Despite how far they’ve come, The National still retain their perspective and the material was as authentic and powerful up close in the intimate venue as it was in the large ones they play now. The National will spend much of the first half of 2011 on tour in Europe, but we expect to see them again in NYC this Summer, although never again at a venue this compact.

We recorded this set with all six of our high-end microphones mixed in eight channels with a slight board mix. We used the Neumann’s for clarity, the DPAs for warmth and the Schoeps for the low end. The results are pretty outstanding. Enjoy!

Bardo Pond: November 20, 2010 Bell House, Brooklyn, NY – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Bardo Pond came to Brooklyn a couple Saturdays ago to headline an event at the Bell House appropriately titled the “Memory Burn Psych Fest.” If you have seen Bardo’s live show before, you know they picked the right event, as they have been known, at times, to sear one’s mind.  I cannot describe their sound any better than this article from Terrascope did:

Bardo Pond has the outward specifications of a rock band – guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, occasional but crucial flute and violin and vocals – but the rivers that converge into the band’s oneiric flow have their headwaters in the outlands of ecstatic jazz, free noise and the avant-garde. Their slow-motion avalanches of churning instrumentation and voice suggest drugged states but don’t necessarily require them. They alter brain chemistry by the alchemical effect of distressed sound alone, aspiring to become engineers of the soul’s passage to alternate states of consciousness. At the foundation of the pyramid, the drums of (originally) Joe Culver and (now) Ed Farnsworth and the bass of Clint Takeda lay down a sinewy, sexy and hypnagogic bottom end. At the centre of the pyramid, the twin guitars of John and Michael Gibbons send out emissaries of fire, flaying flesh from bone in a storm of holy liberation. Isobel Sollenberger inhabits the place where the pyramid meets the eye of their storm, weaving fibres of voice, flute and violin through the din. I heard someone comment recently that the limits of music have now been defined, bracketed by John Cage’s silence at one end and Merzbow’ss maximum noise at the other, leaving only the option of filling the spaces in between. Bardo Pond demonstrate how much scope there is to innovate within that continuum. If rock music is to have any relevance in the new millennium, it is bands like Bardo Pond that will make it so.

For nearly twenty years, Bardo Pond has produced an ever-evolving series of sonic explorations, including the outstanding 2001 release, Dilate.  This show helped to celebrate, in part, the band’s eponymous new LP,  Bardo Pond, which drops next week on December 6 on the UK-based Fire Records.  In a tantalizing preview of what is to come, kicking off with “Limerick” and “Rumination” from Amanita and flowing into four songs of new material.  Although I had heard only one of the new songs before, they continue the band’s by-now-signature tradition of a massive, churning wall of guitars, with Sollenberger’s vocals seething in and out of focus.  When the show ended, we all had to stand there for a second and pause, ears ringing and minds blown.  Bardo’s mission was accomplished.

ArpLine: November 17, 2010 Glasslands and October 21, 2010 Cake Shop – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

I can’t stop talking about ArpLine. Since I first saw the band back in January, they have played seemingly everywhere in town, and each time, they have made converts like me. As musicians, they are insanely consistent, able to blow the doors off of even the most difficult rooms with their layered, Krautrock-influenced songs. This was in full evidence at both the NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Day Party at Cake Shop, and the band’s recent performance at Glasslands. Both shows featured their biggest crowd pleasers like “Parts Unknown” and “Fold Up Like A Piece of Paper”, but they also played a new number that I do not know the name of. But I think the most exciting moment for me at these shows came when the band busted out a live version of their new cover of Sade’s “No Ordinary Love,” turning the cheesy date night slow jam into a menacing industrial number. You can download the song from the band’s website, along with a number of excellent remixes by them of other bands, here. Also on the recorded front, ArpLine’s record, Travel Book, will finally see physical release soon, and it doesn’t have a weak number on it.

ArpLine plays Glasslands again on December 4, when they open for another of our CMJ Day Party acts, Diamond Rings. Get there early and don’t miss their set!

Oneida: October 29, 2010 Monster Island Basement – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On Friday night, Oneida moved about 50 feet from their rehearsal and recording space and played a late night set at Monster Island Basement. The show had the intimate feel of an open rehearsal and jam session, as the band started the set with four “new jams” — basically untitled works in progress. While the new songs are consistent in sound with recent material, the final untitled number featured a Zep-like riff and definitely veered more towards metal. About halfway through the set, the crowd bounced to “Up With People” as the first familiar song of the show, and continued through the remainder of the set which ended sometime around 2 a.m. The following night, the band moved upstairs for the 6th annual “Brahloween”, but on this Friday show it was the new and intimate that prevailed.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted on a pole fifteen feet from the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Maps & Atlases: August 12, 2010 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3 Downloads

With this stellar set at Mercury Lounge, Chicago’s Maps & Atlases announced their arrival as strong contenders on the indie scene.  Touring behind their third release (but first official full length), the quantum-leap-forward Perch Patchwork, the band gave fans far more than originally promised, closing out with an acoustic set on the floor of the venue.  Albeit in a very different way, these Chicagoans, like their neighbors in Tortoise, don’t sound like anybody else.  For lack of a better term, I like to call their sound freak folk meets math rock.  While the concept of “freak folk-meets-math rock” may be hard to grasp, the band’s technical rhythmic sense (including dual percussion at times), combined with singer/guitarist Dave Davison’s vocals and a vaguely folk-based guitar approach make them hard to describe otherwise.  This crowd at Mercury, like many I have seen at the venue recently, were rowdy and going wild for the headliners after a strong night of music.  One group was screaming for “Solid Ground” from the get go, and the version heard here does not disappoint.   That song, like many from their new record, demonstrates the band’s emerging pop sensibility, and the promise of greater things to come.  These guys could go in many directions from here; I can see them wearing the indie crown just as easily as ingratiating themselves to the Bonnaroo scene.  As they are not easily categorized, different fans will understand them in different ways.  Ultimately that acoustic set on the floor tells the story best – these guys want to play music even after most of the crowd has gone home, even after the contractually agreed set time.  They can’t help themselves.  Listen to Perch Patchwork and tell me if you can resist.

I recorded this set with a top quality board feed combined with the Schoeps microphones.  The sound quality of the main set is among the finest of my recordings with this rig and is a testament to the hard work of the Mercury production team.  The acoustic set – which I had to record a bit on the fly – is a bit rougher given that there was no board feed, and the mics picked up some handling noise, but it is still quite good.  Enjoy!

Built to Spill: September 2, 2010 Rocks Off Concert Cruise – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

A show that for some odd reason I didn’t even necessarily intend to see, until a 2 a.m. email to brooklynvegan got me on the boat, ended up being one of my favorite shows of the year and an incredibly appropriate end to the Summer. Built To Spill on the Rocks Off Concert Cruise — two hours of a peak performance in perfect weather and a party atmosphere that managed to get raucous without getting stupid. Doug Martsch is always a genial fellow, but on this night he honored requests, chatted and joked with the fans, and played DJ before and after the set. He may have had as good a time as any of us. Its hard to argue with a setlist that drew five songs from the first two albums, including the rarely played duo of “Twin Falls” and “Some”. There isn’t much more we can ask from this band this year, as they’ve played two excellent shows this year after delivering four great nights last October. But they will be giving more. Built To Spill will play the Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 5 and Highline Ballroom on October 6.

This set was recorded with the Neumann microphones pointed at the stacks from about twenty feet, and mixed with feed from the soundboard. The sound quality is far better than I expected recording music in a boat, since the performance area was mostly indoors and the sound mix in the room was superb. Enjoy!

These United States: August 28, 2010 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The romance of a hard-working band is undeniable.  These are bands that never flag, no matter how many stages in how many cities they’ve sweated on, who above all else evince a percolating creative urge.  That is precisely how to describe These United States.  These boys from Lexington, KY and Washington, D.C. have become regulars in NYC and just about everywhere else in America over the past two years, bringing their Southern-inspired rock far beyond its natural borders.  Along with nearly non-stop touring, they have been releasing albums like crazy, with two in 2008, one in 2009, and their latest, What Lasts this July.  While they have undoubtedly lost a good deal of sleep in the process, what they haven’t lost is their generosity to their fans and their ability to give them a rowdy, spirited show.  This late show at the Mercury Lounge was the second-to-last of their latest tour, but you wouldn’t have known it, with amiable frontman Jesse Elliott chatting up the equally chatty crowd.  I am told that New York is one of the band’s favorite places to play, and if you consider the reception of at least vaguely kindred spirits (i.e., Southern rockers) like Kings of Leon and the Drive-By Truckers, it isn’t difficult to see why — New Yorkers can’t get enough of the sound of the South.

I recorded this set with an excellent board feed provided by the Mercury staff, and the Schoeps hypercardiod microphones.  The overall sound quality is outstanding, but the one caveat is so noteworthy I have to comment on it – a few songs, especially in the beginning, are marred by rude people talking.  Consider that the amount of conversation you hear at points in this recording is recorded from highly directional mics that are eight feet in the air, mixed almost 50/50 with a source that has no crowd noise at all.  Then consider how loud this would be to human ears in the crowd – or worse, on stage.  A rock concert isn’t church – everyone gets that.  But if you want to have a conversation, ignoring the band entirely, please show respect for both the other fans who paid to actually see music – and more importantly, the artists – and take your conversation to the bar or outside.  Whether they actually tell you or not, it bums both the other fans and the band out to have their concert experience marred by someone talking loudly over the music.  With that out of the way, enjoy!

Our friend Jonny Leather has been putting on well-rounded and uniformly excellent showcase shows for awhile now, and we were pleased to have the chance to cover another of them last Friday night at Littlefield. As Jonny’s shows often do, this show spotlighted some bands from outside New York; in this case, the headliners Medications and Deleted Scenes are our Amtrak neighbors from Washington, D.C. Medications may not be a household name up here (yet), but they have an impeccable Dischord pedigree. The band is the brainchild of Devin Ocampo and Chad Molter, who also founded the influential math rock outfit Faraquet. Prior to that, Devin did time in one of my all-time favorite D.C. bands, the short-lived but phenomenal Smart Went Crazy. Medications are a more accessible band than either of its predecessors, retaining the intricate, instantly recognizable guitar work that Faraquet was known for, but with more melodic vocals and traditionally structured songs that reflect the members’ love of not only 70s punk and their contemporaries in the Dischord scene, but also their love of 60s pop. Despite the fact that all hell was breaking loose outside weather-wise, the weather couldn’t keep fans away from this show, which found the band playing through almost all of their recently released CompletelyRemoved, which is one of the strongest new records I have heard this year. Ocampo and Molter (as well as Mark Cisneros, who joined the band for this record) gave the crowd ample evidence of their chops at this show, playing the hell out of their instruments even after the PA feed was shut down due to the venue’s noise restrictions!

I recorded this set with a combination of a stereo soundboard feed provided by the Littlefield staff and the Schoeps microphones. The sound quality is excellent, though I do note that there were some fluctuations in the volume of the soundboard feed as the sound team had to reduce the volume due to the aforementioned noise restrictions. These adjustments should be mostly inaudible to the listener. All tracks are tagged for easy importing into iTunes or your favorite MP3 system. Enjoy!

Wavves: June 24, 2010 Northside Festival, Knitting Factory – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Sweaty bodies were flying all over the place at the Knitting Factory as Wavves headlined the official kickoff show of the 2010 Northside Festival.  Wavves may have been on the bill, and frontman Nathan Williams was certainly there, but otherwise, this was a very different band than the the duo I recorded at the Bowery Ballroom last year, when Nathan came onstage in a cast, chastened after a string of unfortunate incidents and bad press (which, if one judges by Brooklynvegan commenters, earned the man a lot of haters) – and blew the doors off the place in spite of it.  Now, Williams is back with new songs, and more importantly, a new rhythm section consisting of bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes, formerly known as Jay Reatard’s (RIP) band.  The new band does wonders for Wavves, for one thing, Wavves is now, in fact, a full actual band.  It may be party music, fine – but it’s good party music now.  Hayes keeps things lively in between songs with what seems to be the assumed mantle of stage banter duties, and Williams seems grateful not to have the burden.  As for the band’s new songs, from the forthcoming King of the Beach (out August 3rd), in the live setting, the departure is less dramatic than the well-mixed, lighter-feeling and less home-demo sounding songs that have been released to the Internet so far, but they are still a clear step forward.  Tonight we heard several forthcoming examples of what King of the Beach will have to offer, including the first single, “Post Acid,” “King of the Beach,” and “Green Eyes”.  Northside has stepped up its game even further and has the fans pumped – we can’t wait for the next few nights (and days) of shows.

I recorded this set with a stereo soundboard feed and Schoeps CMC641 microphones eight feet up.  The result is a nicely balanced and spot-on rendition of the night.  Enjoy!
