Slothrust: February 21, 2014 Shea Stadium – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Slothrust have been kicking around Brooklyn for a while now, and the time they’ve spent gigging has paid off big-time with their latest release, Of Course You Do, a well-crafted slab that belongs on the shelf of any fan of aggressive guitars and soft/loud dynamics and instant-classic melodies. Vocalist/guitarist Leah Wellbaum, bassist Kyle Bann and drummer Will Gorin aren’t just your average rock n’ roll power trio, either — the members come from the jazz and blues scenes, which you might not have picked up on amid the pandemonium of this burner of a record release show at Shea Stadium. Because Slothrust, my friends, can play fucking heavy, and they brought it end-to-end during this fifty minutes at one of New York’s finest DIY venues.

Those nostalgic for a past golden age of guitar sounds, particularly the early 1990s, can be forgiven, I guess, for labeling Slothrust a “grunge band” and leaving it at that. The problem is, that term was fraught from its inception — none of the bands playing the “style” embraced it, and many of those bands didn’t sound much alike. What would be fair to say is that Slothrust’s set gave off the vibe of the best acts of that era (one site even compared them to early Nirvana). They can create community through noise, though their music is more than just that. Wellbaum can be deceptively thoughtful in her lyrics, and after a few listens, you pick up some of the blues streak that you might not have noticed on first go. Seeing this crowd, this band, gave me hope. Label it whatever you want, but there’s a type of heart in this music that you can’t replace with machines and samples. Lots of music can move bodies. I’m not sure all of it can move souls.

This set was recorded in full digital multitrack in combined with a pair of my audience mics. One unique element of Shea Stadium is that the venue is (officially) a recording studio, so all of the shows there are recorded for streaming on their site. Because the layout of the venue makes our normal recording methods kind of impossible, the Shea team was gracious enough to let us use their digital multitrack files. That made for a recording of outstanding, almost album quality. We’d encourage you to check out their site for their own version of this show (coming soon) as well as previous Slothrust shows and those of hundreds of other bands.

MV & EE: February 17, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

MV & EE are one of those acts that’s so prolific, and whose output is so varied, one would be a fool to try and summarize it all. Cosmic voyagers Matt Valentine and Erika Elder began their journey more than a decade ago, combining Indian raga style with deep psych and damaged Appalachian folk into something wholly new and often unexpected. The duo has a mini-residency going this month at Baby’s All Right, a relatively new Williamsburg venue and restaurant that’s as good-looking as it is inviting. Elder and Valentine served up two sets’ worth of material that covered a range of their career, including songs from their latest, Shade Grown. Building gradually, the first set began with the early slow-burner “Beautiful Mountain”, then “Tea Devil” from the band’s Three Lobed release Country Stash, and “Leaves” from their Woodsist LP Space Homestead, ending with the countrified twang of “Shotgun Willie”. Set two found Valentine and Elder kicking off with “Shit’s Creek” (also from Space Homestead) before taking things into the deep jam zone, as an extra-heady “Too Far To See”,  flowed into an extended jam before landing on a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Green Is the Color”, jamming into the beat-backed “Cocola Parabola”. This show whetted our appetite for the band’s next appearance at the venue this coming Monday, which is a free show. If you haven’t had a chance to check out MV & EE, not to mention Williamsburg’s finest new venue, this is your chance.

This recording was made with a full multitrack digital fileset generously provided by house engineer Devin Foley, together with my Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Herbcraft: January 24, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

“It’s some heady shit.”

That was my introduction, via a fellow attendee, to what to expect from Herbcraft, and I’d say his summary was accurate. This set at Mercury Lounge found the band edging away from their more Eastern-tinged work toward a more straight-up psychedelic rock vibe. That said, these four songs, three of them played in a seamless sequence, were still far out. As with many emerging artists, Herbcraft began as a one-man band in a bedroom, with Matt Lajoie making compositions on his own, but in the intervening half-decade, it has become much more. The band’s organic style, evidenced on five previous releases including their most recent, The Astral Body Electric, translated easily in the live setting, where the band could expand its horizons even further. Herbcraft came straight at us, with screaming guitars and heavily distorted, almost ritualistic vocals, sometimes impossible to distinguish from the surges from the guitars. What struck me most, as this half hour of awesome ended, was the sense of momentum of the work; Lajoie and the band started somewhere, experimented wildly along the way, but got us to our destination. A place that, once we arrived, we didn’t even know we would end up. 

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a Sound Devices USBPre2 preamp. What you’re hearing is house engineer David’s PA mix, and it’s a beauty, especially on headphones. Enjoy!

Woodsman: January 24, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Woodsman has continued to evolve as a unit since we first became interested in their work four years ago, when they released their Mystery Tape EP. The band’s compositions have now fully evolved from more danceable material into instrumental, free-flowing, hypnotic affairs that were well-suited to this late-night set at Mercury Lounge. It feels as if the band that has emerged from their latest recording sessions is the beast they were meant to be, rhythmic, technical-minded, unconventional. Their newly-released, self-titled album Woodsman almost announces their new sense of purpose (this Pitchfork review, out today, is worth reading), and it’s an LP well-suited to winter months that leave you time to think. This show gave us some of that new record’s highlights, like “Healthy Life”, streaming below, and “All Tangled Up”, as well as two brand-new songs that we hope will see the light of day in the future. The band is touring the East Coast and Midwest this month, including a date at Death By Audio on February 8.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a flawless soundboard feed from house engineer David. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Hunters: October 15, 2013 Oh My Rockness CMJ Show, Cameo Gallery – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band Hunters grab your eye right away, thanks to lead vocalist Isabel Almeida’s shock-pink hair and hyperkinetic onstage manner. What holds your interest are their songs, which you mind find yourself humming long after you’re back on the street. This Oh My Rockness CMJ show at Cameo Gallery gave the band headlining status, and they made the most of it, leading us through a rapid-fire set consisting of songs from their eponymous debut album and their underrated Hands on Fire EP from 2011. The night had run long, but Hunters had saved more than enough energy to deliver an excellent set, Almeida and vocalist-guitarist Derek Watson’s vocals coasting on a bed of fuzzed-out guitars. If the measure of a good CMJ show is actually being able to remember what you saw a week or even a single night later, Hunters should count this show a win. You don’t soon forget the experience of seeing them.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from well-known local sound engineer Gary Atturio, combined with Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Chatham County Line: September 5, 2013 Hopscotch Music Festival, Long View Center (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Hopscotch Music Festival is prized by critics for its diversity, and the Raleigh, NC band Chatham County Line can certainly count toward that determination. At a festival featuring everything from doom and black metal to the latest indie darlings, from John Cale to noise collagists like Merzbow, nothing is too far afield to be included, so long as the music is good. Bluegrass music wasn’t over-represented at the festival by any means, but CCL were there to give you your fix, playing a modernized version of the style that keeps its history firmly in mind. Playing in the traditional stage setup clustered around a single microphone, the band covered a wide range of their catalog, as well as previews of their recently-completed sixth album, which should drop later this year.

North Carolina-based taper Larry Tucker recorded this set with a soundboard feed and American-made Peluso CEMC6 cardiod microphones. We’d like to thank him for his generosity in sharing this excellent recording. Enjoy!

The Rooks: January 23, 2014 Piano’s – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I guess I shouldn’t say I was shocked at the size and age of the crowd that was out for The Rooks‘ third of four Piano’s Thursday night residencies. If you watch the Grammys or read most music blogs, you could be forgiven for expecting fans to only be interested in bands defined more by their haircuts or who their “producer” credits go to than the music they are making. The Rooks are a complete breath of fresh air in that respect. Their value proposition is simple: Well-executed, well-crafted classic R&B and soul delivered with maximum enthusiasm and minimum attitude. Think the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, The Spinners.

Recent grads of Wesleyan University (a school famous for birthing less-conventional bands like MGMT and Das Racist), this young sextet has honed their craft to a tee, playing music that honors its history and lives up to its standards. That their cover songs, like the Fugees version of “Killing Me Softly” or Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” stand up as well as they do next to the band’s originals like their single “Twister” or the uptempo “Fall For You” is a testament to just how good they are at what they do. But the best compliment to them of all comes from the crowd they bring out — they bring bodies in the door, and once they’re there, get them moving. I had no doubt that this residency will launch this band to bigger stages — and it already has. The last night of the residency this Thursday, January 30 at Pianos, is sold out, but the band will be at the Gramercy Theatre on February 27. Tickets here.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by house engineer Wilfred, combined with Schoeps MK4V microphones. I weighted the final mix more heavily toward the board than I would have liked, owing to the rowdiness of the crowd, who you can clearly hear having a good time on the tape. While you lose a little bit of “room” feel, the sound quality is nonetheless outstanding. Enjoy!

Wild Cub: October 18, 2013 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Some people can’t stand music that isn’t ironic, or witty, or whatever quality it is that keeps half of the 90s indie canon coming back for reunions these days. Odd, then, the pairing of Nashville up-and-comers Wild Cub with 90s stalwarts The Dismemberment Plan, playing the overlarge room at Terminal 5. If a clearer delineation between musical generations could be made in one lineup, I can’t think of one. The D-Plan are a great band — they’re ironic and often witty, sure, and they have some killer tunes. Listening to them makes you feel like an insider — like some people just don’t get it.

Wild Cub make straight up synth pop, relentlessly upbeat and big-tent inclusive. This show was during CMJ, where almost everyone is networking and ignoring the bands anyway, and worse yet, most of them are playing for free. But nobody seemed to have bummed out Wild Cub; they thanked us over and over for our generosity. Even a not-yet-full Terminal 5 couldn’t contain their enthusiasm. It made me feel like a jerk, to be so blown away that these guys were so nice, to wonder, really, what they had to be so effing happy about.

Many of their songs are good, too, full of big hooks and exuding big-hearted earnestness like middle period U2. Just listen to “Thunder Clatter” or the new “Blacktide” — you’ll get the picture. You might even smile, or at least, feel a feeling other than self-indulgent disdain for your fellow man. The band just re-released their debut album, Youth, to the world with two new tracks, and it’s a well-crafted dose of sunshine and songcraft that, in the manner popular these days, drags the guitars onto the dance floor. Up front, they even got some of these D-Plan veterans moving.

Wild Cub aren’t a band for cynics, and maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe your music ought to be happy, no matter how much the real world sucks. Isn’t that what inspires the future to happen, after all?

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a Sound Devices preamp. The sound quality is limited by being at the back of the floor of Terminal 5, with there being additional echo as the room filled up during the set. Nonetheless, it is a quality capture. Enjoy!

Kevin Morby: January 16, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Kevin Morby has been part of a couple of bands we love, The Babies and, in particular, Woods, so we are excited to be a part of his next musical phase. Kevin left New York for the sunnier climes of LA this past year, and his record Harlem River is a bit of a wistful sayonara to his time here. Compared to his other bands, the record moves at a more sedate pace than the Babies, and doesn’t rely on the guitar freakouts that underline the best songs in the Woods catalog. The new material makes the case for Morby as a songwriter, without having to play loud and fast to make a point. The songs are reflective, mature and most importantly, memorable. Harlem River was easily one of the year’s most underrated records.

Morby opened a packed Mercury Lounge on this Thursday night that was already full for his set. Cate Le Bon is featured on one of the Harlem River tracks, “Slow Train”, so it makes sense that they’d share some of the same crowd. He hadn’t been to New York in a while, he said, and his first offerings to get us in his good graces were two new songs, “The Jester, The Tramp and the Acrobat” and the faster “The Ballad of Arlo Jones”, which is streaming below. From there, he hit the highlights of Harlem River’s eight songs, including a rendition of the title track that offered some extended guitar work, and the album’s logical single, “Miles, Miles, Miles”. For a closer, Morby went back to the well of new material, delivering the excellent “All My Life”, a song that shows that his new journey is only in its beginning stages. Expect to see the new songs on a forthcoming LP (timing TBD). You can follow Kevin on Twitter to keep up with his latest.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Cate Le Bon recording, and the sound quality is similarly outstanding. Enjoy!

Cate Le Bon: January 16, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Cate Le Bon‘s 2013 album Mug Museum (and her 2012 effort Cyrk) reminded me of many of the things that I loved about indie rock in the first place: simple, slightly hazy production; direct, memorable hooks; lyrics that meant something; and an unforced vibe that didn’t sound it was trying too hard. The Achilles heel of that last quality has tended to be that it comes off live as boredom or slacking. With Cate Le Bon, I’m pleased to report that’s not the case.

Together with Kevin Morby (that recording coming soon), Le Bon easily sold out the Mercury Lounge for this night. So much so, in fact, that there must have been some regret about not going with a bigger venue. When you can get a line down the street pre-doors for a Thursday night early show in January, you’ve probably got enough buzz to play to more than 200 people. That said, it’s hard to replicate the feeling of seeing a great act in a club that’s both that intimate and that good sounding, and whatever this crowd lacked in sheer numbers it more than made up for in enthusiasm.

Resplendent in a shimmering aquamarine dress with sheer side vents, Le Bon played us most of Mug Museum along with select tracks from Cyrk, the Cyrk II companion EP and her debut album, Me Oh My. Le Bon earns comparisons to Nico from time to time, and there are flashes of her singing style at play, but the Welsh singer’s range is broader, and she seems a bit more approachable to spend an evening with. Live, Cate’s songs gained a heady dose of immediacy compared to their recorded counterparts. While “Sisters” doubled as the energetic peak at this show and on the record, “Duke” felt transformed into a heavier, less distant number when played live in that small room. Le Bon’s vocals were strong throughout the night, as was her band, who followed her whims on this night rather than the pre-planned setlist. These sixty-one minutes of pleasure were a sell-out well earned, and we expect Le Bon and the band will keep that streak up as the head west.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed arranged by the band’s traveling engineer (if you have his name, please pass it along so I can credit accordingly) and the head Mercury engineer Kevin Mazzarelli, along with Schoeps MK41 microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
