Kathryn Calder: September 11, 2015 Mercury Lounge

Kathryn Calder’s solo career got a jump start this year. After Kathryn spent much of 2014 on tour as a member of the New Pornographers, a band within which she’s been a member for almost a decade, she returned to making her own music. It was the dual tragedy of the separate deaths of her parents that caused Kathryn to step away from solo material. Her 2010 album Are You My Mother? so poignantly captured the mixture of sadness and devotion involved in caring for a sick parent as Kathryn was coping with her mother’s ALS. Five years removed from that album, Kathryn Calder (self-titled) was released in April of this year. While not as profoundly personal as Are You My Mother?, the new album is consistent with Calder’s solo work — personal songs anchored by her rich and moving vocals. Her performance at Mercury Lounge in September took place on the most somber of days in NYC, but as with all of her material the message of hope was most appreciated on that particular day. Kathryn worked through five of the ten songs from the new album, some older material and one brand new song in a well-paced fifty-minute set that delivered exactly what we came to see.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted at the front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The post-production work was a little difficult reconciling the quieter and louder moments during the set, which partly explains the delay in posting this recording. However, the final product is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Courtesy Tier: November 3, 2015 Rough Trade BK

Its been too long since we last attended and recorded a Courtesy Tier performance — five years to be exact. The silver lining to that kind of missed opportunity is to witness a sort of time lapse of talent that was saw at Rough Trade last week. Courtesy Tier is a much bigger, more powerful and more refined outfit than we saw a half-decade ago. That is not to say that the band wasn’t quite excellent back in 2010, when their energy and potential excited us enough to invite them to our CMJ show that year. But in 2015, Courtesy Tier is an impressive, fully-realized unit and their set at Rough Trade was a revelation. This show was an EP release party for their newest Little Rock, a three-song collection that was performed in the heart of the set. The balance of this Courtesy Tier show was a textbook example of a trio playing on all cylinders with Omer Leibovitz’s crunchy guitar out front and supported by the aggressive rhythm section of drummer Layton Weederman and the newest member of the band, bassist Alex Picca. The band played a couple of new songs, but when it came time to close the night, one of the final numbers went all the way back to those nights in 2010, and this time around “Cold” was a kind of victory lap for a band that is definitely these days playing from the win column.

I recorded this set by placing the Schoeps cards mounted front and center of the soundboard booth, and mixing the audience capture with a fine soundboard feed provided by the band’s excellent FOH Matthew Curtis. The sound quality if this recording is superb. Enjoy!

Alex Bleeker and The Freaks: November 12, 2015 Brooklyn Bowl (2 Sources)

Alex Bleeker and The Freaks treated us to two concerts on Thursday night at Brooklyn Bowl. As the release party for the new album Country Agenda, the first set was an extremely well-played run through much of the record with some older Freaks tunes, and one outstanding cover. The second set was the Freaks “Play Dead” — a guest-filled performance of Grateful Dead tunes, similar to what the band did in Chicago in July.

Country Agenda struck me most upon first listen as an album with superb production values. The sound quality is absurdly good, but what’s more compelling is that the songs have a feel that is consistent with the music. While others have pointed to the American Beauty / Workingman’s Dead qualities of the songs, this album very much more resembles a Laurel Canyon record and the offshoots of that movement. For the live performance, what substituted for the production values of the record was the tightness of the band. The Freaks were extremely well rehearsed and wired into each other — this is a band of both talent and commitment and the performance proved that. But this was also a night when the Freaks had some fun and let loose. The jamming aspect of this show began with the final number of the first set, an extended cover of Ricky Skaggs’ “Gone Home,” and continued throughout the second set of Grateful Dead music. Among the Dead songs, the one that jumped out most was the Martin Courtney (Bleeker’s bandmate in his other project, Real Estate) appearance for “Here Comes Sunshine”, which featured Courtney’s unique vocals and a tight three-guitar attack (thanks to the addition of Courtney) that nailed what is otherwise a difficult song to pull off. By “difficult,” I mean that the Grateful Dead themselves stopped playing it for a couple of decades because of timing difficulties. The night ended in very sweet fashion, as the uber-talent Steve Gunn led the band through a profound version of “Wharf Rat.” In total, Alex Bleeker and The Freaks provided us with two sets and well over two hours of music featuring both the band’s superb new album and a fun set of Dead covers. It was a tremendous night and fortunately it will be repeated soon. The band will once again “Play Dead” on December 30 at Rough Trade.

Acidjack and I both recorded this set with separate rigs. We shared a superb board feed provided by Brooklyn Bowl’s FOH (we need help with his name to give full credit) and we both ran Schoeps from the middle of the room. I used the Schoeps CCM4 cardioids and acidjack ran his MK41V supercardiods. The sound in the room was also quite excellent (including very little crowd chatter). The nyctaper mix favors the audience feed (about 65/35 in favor of the room), while the acidjack mix accentuates the well-mixed board feed. The sound quality of both mixes is superb but offer different approaches to this show. Enjoy!

Kaki King and Kiran Gandhi: October 26, 2015 The Hum at Manhattan Inn

I believe its safe to say that at this point The Hum music series has been an unqualified success. The concept was a unique one — place together various female performers from diverse backgrounds and let them make music. But in practice, it has become so much more than that. The results of these performances have created friendships, bonds, working relationships and as we’ve experienced live, absolutely breathtaking musical accomplishments. In the Spring, we attended and recorded all four of the sessions at the Manhattan Inn. This Fall, various commitments prevented us from attending all but one of the nights. But fortunately, the night we attended was a superb presentation and contained what for me is the most compelling performance of the entire series — the duo between uber-guitarist Kaki King and supreme percussionist Kiran Gandhi.

We were familiar with Kaki King, most notably from her supporting slot on the 2008 Mountain Goats tour. But her career has spanned more than a decade and includes eight albums. In the recent past she has released instrumental (Glow) and multi-media pieces (The Neck Is The Bridge To The Body) and that format gave a nice backdrop to this Hum show. Our only familiarity with Kiran Gandhi was that she was the drummer on recent M.I.A. tours — but a little of bit of research revealed that Kiran is truly a remarkable human being. She has toured internationally with M.I.A. and Thievery Corporation while simultaneously achieving an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. She has her own TED Talk, is a mathematics genius, oh and yeah, ran the London Marathon — all by the age of 25.

The set begins with Kiran’s sincere thanks to the Hum and to its founder Rachael Pazdan. As Kaki began the opening riff, the duo flowed effortlessly into what we believe is an original composition for this night, a track titled with both performers’ last names. Thematically, the opening number is similar to the songs that followed which include two numbers from Kaki King’s recent albums (Glow and The Neck). “Wazey” is a Madame Ghandi song that became the centerpiece for the set when Kiran involved the very willing crowd over whom she harmonized a coda to the song. It was a moment that truly captures the sense of discovery and community that The Hum has created and brought and end to this installment of the series with a very appropriate close. The Hum will return, likely in early 2016.

I recorded this set as we did the Spring, with Sennheiser cardioid microphones mounted on stage and mixed a board feed. The sound quality of this particular recording is quite remarkable, as the instruments are clear and panned in the appropriate layout of the room. Enjoy!

Vomitface: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper CMJ Party at Cake Shop

A band that calls itself Vomitface faces some challenges. The band likely has to answer persistent questions about the name and get people to concentrate on the music. They were invited to play our CMJ show because we did just that. We listened to the music and saw what is there, a talented band with a wry sense of humor and a palpable energy. But we didn’t learn until later that there’s way more here than meets the eye. The band’s drummer Preetma Singh is a former attorney who left the law to pursue a career as a fashion editor, and has become renowned in certain circles for her “street style”. The band’s lead singer Jared Micah is also a prolific music writer with the legendary online zine Tiny Mixed Tapes. Together with a revolving cast of bassist friends, they produce a kind of early-80s styled agit-punk similar to early Sonic Youth, Naked Raygun or Mission of Burma. Vomitface was up second on this day show and they had the room pretty snug early in the set with an eight-song show that included only one song from their 2015 EP Another Bad Year, and what appears to be several new songs. We were all set to catch Vomitface at Pianos last night but an illness caused a cancellation, but the band will play Don Pedro’s on November 21.

Acidjack recorded this show in the same manner as the other sets from the day and the sound is equally superb. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: October 30, 2015 Tommy Brull Benefit – Rockville Centre NY

One of the more inspiring aspects of the Tommy Brull Foundation is that the organization is very much about celebrating a life by helping others. I have been fortunate to get the know the guys over the last five years of attending these shows, and although the sadness of the loss of Tommy still exists sixteen years since his death, the best tribute that his family and friends can do for him is to continue to celebrate his love of music and his sense of community. For this most recent night of music, the Foundation brought back for the third time a band that seems to fit this vision perfectly. Deer Tick played the first ever “Shine A Light” music event in 2011, and returned a couple of years later. The connection seems real — Deer Tick are also genuinely righteous guys who also undoubtedly love to have a good time. So the fact that this year’s event fell on Halloween Eve kicked up the “good time” element of the event a bit more. Deer Tick came dressed as Blue Man Group and played a raucous set that also included two thematically appropriate covers — Warren Zevon’s “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” and Steve Miller’s “Abracadabra”. The balance of the setlist included a virtual career retrospective and even a brand new song, but it was the positive atmosphere, the band’s recognition of the importance of the event and the spirit of community that made this night so compelling. As a celebration of Tommy’s life, it couldn’t really have been any better.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted at the front of the stage and mixed it with a soundboard feed. There are points where the vocals in the PA drop out, so you’ll hear a lower vocal volume that comes from the on-stage monitors, but when everything’s on board, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

YVETTE: October 29, 2015 Trans Pecos

My first experience with YVETTE live was a night a few years ago at Death By Audio (RIP) when the band came off the stage and played their show inside of the crowd. The set-up made recording the performance impossible, but the sheer intensity and volume of that performance by YVETTE was astounding and I’ve been following them ever since. Acidjack caught their set at Hopscotch a little over a year ago, and his observations were consistent with mine. In the interim, YVETTE has followed up their superb 2013 debut album Process with a single (“I Don’t Need Anything From Anybody”) that appeared on a Godmode compilation (American Music – GM062) and then released an EP in October called Time Management which is available on cassette and through digital download. This set from a late Thursday night at Trans Pecos draws from all three releases, and continues to astound us in the sheer largeness of it all. You would not believe if you didn’t already know, but the depth of sound coming from the stage derives from a duet with Noah Kardos-Fein on guitar with various electronic enhancements and analog pedals and Dale Eisinger on drums and percussion. The overall effect is compelling and we will undoubtedly continue to follow this outstanding band.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in the front of the stage and mixed with a board feed to fortify the vocals. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Dirty Ghosts: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper CMJ Party at Cake Shop

The San Francisco band Dirty Ghosts has existed in one form or another for the last ten years, but its real beginnings date back into the last century and band leader Allyson Baker’s parents’ house in Toronto. Baker was a young punk rocker (and big Dwarves fan) who invited touring bands to stay at the house, leading to some great stories and ultimately an introduction into the music world. Fast forward to last decade and Baker’s move to SF and the Dirty Ghosts beginnings as her solo project produced by then-husband Aesop Rock. In the intervening years, the band has evolved from a duet to a full-fledged band featuring guitar wizard Erin McDermott on bass. In September, Dirty Ghosts have released their second full-length album Let It Pretend and this Fall is perhaps the most active time period in the band’s history. We were fortunate that the band was available for CMJ and we slotted them into our show in the late afternoon when the room was overflowing. Dirty Ghosts responded with a superb set that included music from their 2015 EP Cataract, one song from their debut album 2012’s Metal Moon, and the balance from the new record. After CMJ the band remains busy with their hometown official CD release show in SF on November, to be followed by a full Europe tour in November and December with Kelley Stoltz.

Acidjack recorded this set in the same manner as the other bands from this show and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

One of the nicer things about this superb Luna reunion tour has been the band’s acknowledgement of their own history. In Atlanta, Luna performed the entire Penthouse record from start to finish (recording here), and earlier in the week of New York shows, the Bowery Ballroom night was a chance to acknowledge the location of their final pre-reunion show in 2005 and the excellent documentary Tell Me Do You Miss Me of that tour (recording here).

In Brooklyn, the band welcomed back the original drummer Stanley Demeski, the legendary percussionist from the Feelies who was the behind the kit for the first three Luna albums, including the aforementioned Penthouse. At this special night in Brooklyn, Demeski added a nice extra set of skins to three songs for which he played on the original recordings, including a particularly memorable “23 Minutes in Brussels”. The guest appearance was the highlight of one of the best played shows of the tour and what is also one of the longer sets of the reunion shows.

Kubacheck recorded this show from a stand at the right nook in front of the soundboard booth with his excellent MBHO cards, and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The story of how the band Dirty Dishes came into being reads like something out of a Judd Apatow movie. The guy who vomits on the girl’s shoes at a party later calls to apologize and buy her new shoes, and eventually the two decide to start a band. The nagging question is why anyone would want to start a band with a shoe-puker — but after about thirty seconds of seeing Alex Molini play bass guitar the answer is obvious. The dude can flat out play. While Jenny Tuite’s lead vocals and melodic guitar lines are the centerpiece of the band, its the Molini bass presence that sets Dirty Dishes apart and are a large part of the reason why we invited them to our play our CMJ Day Party this year. The band had other gigs later in the evening so they needed to start early, which gave us the opportunity to see the band up close unfettered by the massive crowds that filled the Cake Shop basement later in the day. The Dirty Dishes set drew primarily from their 2015 release Guilty (Exploding in Sound Records) with two apparently new songs. It was the interplay between the band’s guitarists that impressed throughout and proves that no matter how you meet, its always a good thing to find your musical mate.

Dirty Dishes’ Fall Tour continues throughout November as the band travels through the East coast, Canada and the Midwest — all dates here. This tour includes a return to NYC for a show at Silent Barn on November 22.

Acidjack recorded this set in the same manner as the WOMPS set posted last week — Schoeps mounted on stage and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
