Sannhet: March 27, 2015 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its fair to say that we generally have pretty similar tastes among the various members of the NYCTaper crew, but there are definite divergent viewpoints on different musical genres. So while its not uncommon that we’ll all agree to the excellence of a particular artist, there are generally degrees of interest among us. So its somewhat rare when we’re all in universal agreement that a band is simply awesome. When acidjack recorded Sannhet exactly a month earlier than this past Friday’s show at Saint Vitus it brought a smile to my face when I read his review where he referred to the band as “phenomenally good”, confirming my exact reaction from as long as two years ago.

This Saint Vitus show was the release party for Sannhet’s new album Revionist (Flenser Records) which has received the kind of universal acclaim that leads to best-of-year type album acknowledgement when the time comes. The trio’s ability to capture a level of intensity within four to five minute song bursts is really quite remarkable and the live show is accompanied by compelling screen projections that add to the mood — a silent crowd during the music that erupted at song breaks and at the end of the set. Sannhet has been grouped with metal, black metal and post-metal bands from its outset but the band is far more than a simple label these days. This is almost orchestral rock music that sets a theme and then proceeds to guide the listener trance-like through all of the emotional aspects of the song’s journey. Its truly an experience not to be missed and we expect that Saint Vitus will soon be too small a room for Sannhet as their influence grows. The band is currently on an East Coast and Midwest tour and the next scheduled NYC show is at Music Hall of Williamsburg opening for Viet Cong on June 14.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted in front of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent board feed provided by house FOH Tim. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Pile: March 19, 2015 Longbranch Inn – Impose SXSW – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Thursday was my first day of SXSW this year and it was a very long day. I awoke at the crack of dawn in NYC and flew to Austin arriving around 1pm local time. The afternoon was filled with errands, a few beers, some local cuisine and then it was time to get to the Impose Magazine “Imposition” show at the Longbranch Inn on East 11th. The roster for this night was filled with fake names — bands that due to silly contractual games couldn’t be named until after playing the “official” shows on the west side of town. It was not long after we arrived that the actual bill for the night was announced and it was as we expected from these Impose shows, a fine list of current up and comers. The anchor for the night was Boston’s Pile, a band that’s not exactly new but who are finally getting the attention they deserve. By the time the band took the stage it was after 1:30 am and I was pushing 24 straight hours awake — but these guys gave me a much needed jolt of energy.

Pile began in 2009 began as Rick Maguire’s solo project before he recruited a band to tour. The band’s shows have become legendary in the Boston DIY scene, as Pile has become what’s been described as “your favorite band’s favorite band”. The band’s new album You’re Better Than This (Exploding In Sound Records) was released earlier this month. The album has its ferocious and gentle sides, a loud-soft-loud dynamic that exhibits influences that include post-punk, noise rock, and even anti-folk. I hear everything from the Minutemen through Built To Spill and of course their hometown predecessors Mission of Burma. For this short SXSW set, this live version of Pile was less about the “soft” and more about the straight ahead punk which was fine with us. The set began with three straight songs from You’re Better, and we’re streaming “The World is Your Motel” which absolutely raged. Pile is now on an extensive tour (dates here), which comes to NYC for an April 28 show at Baby’s All Right. This is a much recommended show from our viewpoint.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on a stand directly in front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

It is not hyperbole to say that Alejandro Escovedo is an American treasure. The authenticity and intensity of his songwriting abilities have produced a forty-year body of work that places him among the very upper echelon of his era’s artists. It is perhaps the greatest acknowledgement of the quality of an artist when other artists cover the material, and for Escovedo’s work this happens so often that a two-CD tribute called Por Vida was released in 2004 featuring a veritable who’s-who of the best alt-country and americana artists. My own personal experience was seeing Joe Ely cover Escovedo at the Bowery Ballroom in the late 90’s, playing (what else) “Down in the Bowery”. It was a stunning rendition that gave great tribute to his friend — Ely and Alejandro have toured together several times.

You can tell a lot about the quality of artist through their friends. And with Escovedo, this time around he’s on tour with Los Lobos — artists who have also toured together many times over the years. When this tour came through the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester a couple of weeks back, it was truly a show to catch. We arrived early to make sure not to miss any of Alejandro’s set, which began at a very prompt 8:10pm. Playing acoustic guitar accompanied only by superb violinst Warren Hood (the son of another Escovedo friend Champ Hood), this was the stripped-down and intimate Alejandro set, even given the size of the venue. As he has done in recent tours, Escovedo’s set was a career retrospective, accompanied by song introductions where he talked about his time in The Nuns, with Rank and File, and finally his personal history. It was a thoroughly enjoyable hour-long set and convinced me that we need more Alejandro Escovedo on NYCTaper in the future. Alejandro will be hosting his annual SXSW shows in Austin this coming weekend, dates and information here.

I recorded this set in the same fashion as the Los Lobos set posted earlier and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

moe.: March 13, 2015 Best Buy Theatre – Flac/MP3/Streaming Full Show

Last month we took a look back at some 1990’s classic moe. in tribute to our fallen friend. We have a lot of good memories from that period in moe.’s history, but rest assured they are still a very active and compelling live act. On Friday at the Best Buy Theatre in Times Square we experienced that first hand. moe. is in NYC for three shows in celebration of their 25th year of existence, the first of which was an intimate performance at Le Poisson Rouge, but this night was the first of two nights at Best Buy and the band was clearly on. The first set was nearly ninety minutes and contained just six “songs” — but plenty of outstanding jam sequences and extended work on some of their most classic material. “Meat” has always been a highlight song for me and this set-closing version was one for the ages. Al Schnier in particular was manic during the climax of the song and ended the set on a great high note. moe’s second set started with a very apt song, their classic tribute to “New York City”, played obviously as a dedication to the location of the show but also I suspect as a tribute to Eric and his wife who often requested this number. After a run through some of their newer songs, moe.’s second set ended with a lengthy and peak segue performance of “Akimbo” into “Rebubula”, which began with some nice interplay between the guitars that hinted several times at the Grateful Dead’s “Playing in the Band”. After an extended encore break, the band returned for an exceptional “The Road” before bidding goodnight. The band plays again at Best Buy tonight, and the tour continues through the Midwest and South, dates here. We will be catching up with moe. again at Mountain Jam in June.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards from a very advantageous location in a very well placed taper’s section — about 40 feet back and centered on the floor. I used hi and lo’s V3 pre-amp which really added some nice color to this prime Schoeps capture of a very nice sounding room. The result is a really superb recording. Enjoy!

Los Lobos: April 25, 1996 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming (uncirculated ericv recording)

I’m not entirely certain of the exact date that I met Eric Vandercar, but my best guess is February or March of 1996. We met through the old NYC-DAT-heads email list, and the immediate connection was the fact that we both had enormous DAT tape collections. When I first visited Eric in the Elizabeth Street apartment that he shared with his wife Jill, one of the first DATs he played for me was a March of 1996 Neil Young show in a small club in Santa Cruz — a recording that inspired me to purchased the very microphones that were used for that show. Eric and I traveled to shows in several different cities in the late 90s, and I’ve talked about those roadtrips in previous posts, but I believe that the first show Eric and I actually attended together was this Los Lobos show at Mercury Lounge on April 25, 1996. I am certain that Eric recorded this show from a mic stand mounted at the front left side of the soundboard booth at the Merc — in other words, at one of the most foot-traveled spots in the venue. My job was to block people from bumping into Eric’s rig and from the sound of this recording I did a pretty good job — up until the encore break when there are a few bumps on the mic stand.

At this point in their history Los Lobos was a very well established band, and when they released their 1996 album Colossal Head, there was a traditional round of promotion for the band to do. One of the best means of early album promo in the old days was a visit to Letterman, and on April 24, 1996, Los Lobos played David Letterman’s Late Show in the Sullivan Theatre, performing “Mas Y Mas” on national television. So with the band in NYC for a few days, there was a “secret show” scheduled at Mercury Lounge for which we were fortunate to snag a ticket. A venue the size of Mercury was a very intimate show for Los Lobos in 1996 and on this Thursday night the place was absolutely packed, including a reporter from the New York Times, who wrote a review of the show. Lobos worked through much of the then-new album, and seemed to be having a great time interacting with the crowd — there’s quite a bit of banter on this recording besides the tracked portions. When the set came to a close with an extended and well-jammed “Peace” it seemed very much as if the show was over. Indeed Eric faded out and turned off his deck when house music came over the PA. But the capacity crowd was having none of that and after a long break Los Lobos returned for two encores, including an outstanding Neil Young cover that we are streaming below.

This recording has not previously circulated in flac format as far as I can tell. There is no entry at db.etree and no reference to this recording on any online trade lists. Eric recorded this set on a stand in the location described above with his trusty B&K cards. There is a decent amount of crowd chatter but overall this is a superb recording and certainly up to par with Eric’s high standards. The DAT that I possess was cloned digitally from Eric’s master and extracted without a single error. There is one brief bit of digi-static in the first song likely from the original transfer (no error shows up on my DAT). I edited a few loud claps, joined the fade-out portion of the encore break, boosted the levels and added fades in and out. Otherwise this is Eric’s recording in its 19 year old glory. Enjoy!

Los Lobos: March 6, 2015 Capitol Theatre, Port Chester – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its the result of a bunch of missed connections, but the strange reality is that I have never recorded Los Lobos for NYCTaper before in the nearly eight years of existence of the site. Los Lobos is one of the most powerful and prolific live bands and last year they celebrated their 40th year of existence, and I’ve seen them a bunch of times over the years, but not for NYCTaper. Only Acidjack and JFCB have recorded them for the site — a Brooklyn Bowl show back in 2012. They’ve also traditionally welcomed tapers going back decades. And as a special celebration, tomorrow I will post a “new” transfer of a 1996 recording of Los Lobos at Mercury Lounge — a show recorded by my friend Eric Vandercar that I attended as Eric’s “blocker”.

In Port Chester on Friday, the Capitol Theatre was really the perfect venue for this band. After a superb opening set by Alejandro Escovedo (coming soon), Los Lobos took the stage to a very engaged crowd. There was none of the persistent yapping you hear at other shows. This was a seated and attentive crowd that Los Lobos acknowledged from the outset. The band took their time working their way into this show with an early run through some classics before they welcomed Alejandro out for a couple of numbers. It was an extended and well played version of “The Neighborhood” that kicked this show into another gear. David Hidalgo’s blues guitar riffs were showcased during an incendiary 14-minute “Just A Man” before the fan favorite “Kiko” brought the crowd to their feet for the remainder of the show. The band gave a nice acknowledgement to Jerry Garcia (the venue’s side bar is called “Garcia’s”) before the performance of the set-closing “Bertha”, a song Los Lobos covered all the way back in 1991 for the Deadicated compilation. We’re streaming it below. But the band wasn’t done. The encore segment began with a brief blues jam that led directly into Cesar Rosas’ “Don’t Worry Baby” which then transitioned to “May Y Mas” — another extended version that we are streaming below. The final segue was a neat back and forth between the band’s one Top 40 hit “La Bamba” and the same-three-chords rock classic Good Lovin’ after which the band bid an appropriate good night. Los Lobos tour continues next week with a brief run through the Northwest, dates here.

I recorded this show with the Schoeps mounted on a seven foot pole located at the front right corner of the soundboard cage. As this was seated show, my location was Orchestra Row J, Seat 109. The direct line at the stacks and the wonderful sound quality of a well mixed room resulted in an outstanding recording. Enjoy!

Ever since we captured Diane Cluck‘s inspired performance at Joe’s Pub in early 2013, I’ve been trying to work with Diane on a show. This NYCTaper Presents event at Trans Pecos was the culmination of that desire and frankly it could not have gone any better. On a cold Tuesday night in Ridgewood Queens, Diane, Jeffrey Lewis and their curated opener Kid In The Attic filled up Pecos and each performer delivered an outstanding set. This was the final night of Diane and Jeff’s East Coast tour and the night had a celebratory feel. Diane’s setlist featured a nice career-spanning selection of material with an emphasis on her newest and perhaps most consistently excellent release Boneset. After the main set when Diane asked for requests and a sharp fan asked for “The Turnaround Road”, the off-the-cuff version became my own personal highlight of the set. We are streaming it below. Afterwards, Diane was joined by Jeff for three songs before closing the show with perhaps her most well known song “Sara”. We thought that the show was over at that point but the still-packed crowd gave the performer an enthusiastic ovation and Diane returned for an encore. Diane Cluck will not be performing in the US until the Fall, but she will be on an extensive European tour in April and throughout May, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards on a stand at the front of the stage and mixed with a board feed. I didn’t raise my live levels enough during this set so that when the levels were boosted in post there are some artifacts of the process — mainly some hiss at quieter moments. Otherwise, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Helmet: February 22, 2015 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Helmet is taking a look back this tour and celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album Betty beginning each show by playing the album straight through. On Sunday night the band added a special wrinkle by playing a small club the size of which they haven’t played in years. As Page Hamilton noted at the first break in the action, the “first Helmet show ever” was played at a club very similar in style, location and size to Saint Vitus — the late great Lauterbach’s in Brooklyn. For a time in the 80s and 90s, Lauterbach’s was the place for punk, hardcore and metal in the “outer boroughs”. And out it was, all the way in the South Slope on Prospect Avenue. And like the long gone venue, Helmet themselves are a product of that era in Brooklyn. As the band’s founder and only remaining original member Hamilton was a known quantity in music circles when Helmet formed in 1989, but there was a period when places like Lauterbach’s were their venues of choice. Helmet would go on to play a vast arragy of huge venues in the 1990s. While Saint Vitus in 2015 is an established and well-respected home for heavy music, its nice to see that Page has a sense of history — respect enough for the band’s legion of fans — to return to his roots and come “full circle” as he described. For this set, Helmet ripped through Betty in forty-five minutes staying pretty close to the album’s sound. The final half of the show has varied throughout this tour and on Sunday we got some rare oldies and of course the hits. I was particularly impressed with the raging extended version of “Driving Nowhere” which gave Page a chance to stretch out and display his guitar chops. We are streaming that track below. I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in front of the soundboard and mixed with a feed that Page earlier in the week had encouraged us to use. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
