Smashing Pumpkins: December 8, 2014 Webster Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I think its safe to say that Billy Corgan can be a polarizing figure in the music press. The Smashing Pumpkins are certainly one of rock’s most enduring 90s bands and although Billy has been endlessly criticized for a series of personnel changes in the band, the group as it exists in 2014 is still a pretty damned good unit. The new Smashing Pumpkins album Monuments to an Elegy is a superb record — high quality material with a very strong supporting cast and Billy’s guitar and voice have never sounded better. Its the album you’d hope that the Smashing Pumpkins would make in 2014. But reading the current state of the music press, you wouldn’t necessarily even know that TSP and Billy released such high quality work or that they even have a new album at all. And that’s a shame. The click-driven rags that write about music-related issues are selling headlines and Billy’s various beefs and highly quotable outlandish statements drive the big type and site visits. But credit where credit is due — among those sites, Pitchfork begrudgingly gave Monuments a review that was both fair and pretty accurate.

The Smashing Pumpkins are playing a few small venues in various cities to celebrate the album’s release and as an introduction to the band that will play the much larger album support tour. New York and Webster Hall were fortunate to land one of these intimate events. The band consists of Corgan and longtime TSP guitarist Jeff Schroeder, and newcomers bassist Mark Stoermer (from The Killers) and drummer Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine). Despite having played only a few shows together thus far, this unit of pros is already operating on all cylinders and were about as tight as could be expected. The setlist for this show was of course heavy on Monument material (five of nine songs), but also included a nice selection of older material (“Hummer” was a standout) and one neat cover (Bowie’s “Fame” streaming below), before the main set closed with a tremendous thirteen-minute “Silverfuck” that was both jammed, intense, and included a couple of teases (I heard “Kashmir” while others noticed “She Sells Sanctuary”). The show ended in a forward-looking fashion as TSP closed with the night with a powerful unreleased ballad called “Burnt Orange-Black” which is scheduled to appear on their next album due in 2015. This mini tour concludes on the West coast this week with shows in Las Vegas and LA. Stay tuned for new tour dates in the new year.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted on the front center wall of the soundboard cage in the lower balcony. The recording is primarily (75%) room mics because the sound in the room on this night was among the best quality sound I’ve literally ever heard in any venue due in large part to the quality of the crew and Webster’s new upgraded system. We added in a small amount of board feed to boost the vocals and give the recording a bit more “direct” sound. This amazing sounding show was mixed by the band’s current FOH Kevin Lemoine and he deserves all the credit. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 6, 2014 Trocadero Philly – Flac/MP3/Streaming

YLT 1

This show represents the only time this year that I saw Yo La Tengo live. You have to go back nearly a decade to find a calendar year when I saw the band only once. The band went out on a little mini-tour in celebration of their official 30th anniversary as a band and also in support of a new release called Extra Painful — a reissue of their classic 1993 album Painful packed with a bunch of bonus material. So since the two Town Hall shows were not conducive to recording, I made a roadtrip in the pouring rain to Philadelphia and back. The Trocadero is a converted old theatre right in the heart of Philly’s Chinatown District and its just a few blocks from the Franklin Bridge — an easy in and out of the City. Although the Troc has two balconies and an official capacity of 1200, it definitely has an intimate vibe perhaps since the actual floor is fairly small. But intimate or not, we’re used to seeing Yo La Tengo amongst “friends” at some fairly small-ish places, so there was a definite “road” feel to this show. As YLT shows go, this one had pretty much everything you could ask for including some rare nuggets (“Empty Pool”, “Demons”), special guests (Tara Key early, and full Antietam later), plenty of noisy stuff, and an absolutely ear-crushing “Story”. We are streaming a standout version of “Drug Test” that began with a (separately tracked) false start but like in so many of those situations with a “start over”, the band totally nailed it on the re-do. Yo La Tengo currently has no scheduled dates, but we’re hoping that we get more than one chance to see them live in 2015.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in the front of the soundboard booth and mixed with a superb feed provide by the band’s longtime and legendary FOH Mark Luecke. As with most YLT recordings, there are level issues — the quiet songs are whispers and the noisey songs are loud as heck — so there are some minor artifacts from my editing to create a more consistent level throughout. Ultimately the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Whiskey Bitches: October 23, 2014 NYCTaper CMJ Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its been an eventful 2014 for Whiskey Bitches. Since our last visit for their impressive set at Death By Audio (RIP) in April, the band has played a ton of shows, released two videos, and self-released their second EP, the four-song Never Enough. During CMJ week, Whiskey Bitches played 6 shows, with ours falling in the middle. The band was on early, but even with some performance and party hangovers they managed to draw a crowd and play their typically energetic set. The setlist contained three of the four songs from the EP and two excellent new numbers. We’re streaming the lead track of the EP, “Disaster”.

Tonight (December 5) you can see Whiskey Bitches live at Cake Shop.

Acidjack recorded this show in the exact same manner as the previous sets from this show (Schoeps Onstage + SBD) and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

TSB 338 Moffat

In July when we first encountered Tonstartssbandt, their impressive performance led us to promise that the band would be featured often on NYCTaper. Well, here they are again. This set was the opening of a really impressive four-band bill presented by Panache Booking at 338 Moffat for Halloween. The venue is basically a private loft space where several local artists reside and the huge living room became a show space and party room for a pretty crazy night. At the point when TSB played, the room wasn’t quite as full or as manic as later in the night, but the band’s set certainly got the night off to a very good start. This was a shorter performance than the show we saw in July, but Tonstartss once again structured the set as essentially one long segue featuring some of the band’s own numbers interspersed with several unique covers. We’re thankful that the duo provided us with the setlist because we were not previously familiar with a band such as obscure Swedish 60s psych band Pärson Sound, a group favorited by TSB in previous releases and which we are streaming below. Its that kind of love of music that makes Tonstartssbandht performances not to be missed. TSB are currently on tour is Asia and Australia, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted at the front and center of the stage and mixed slightly with a board feed consisting primarily of vocals and kick drum. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Caveman: October 15, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

November 28, 2014

caveman 2014 b

The Brooklyn band Caveman have been several times on these pages in the last few years, including most recently a sold-out show at Webster Hall in the Spring of last year. After a lengthy quiet period, in October the band played a cluster of shows and we found out why — they’re recording a big batch of new songs. We were fortunate to capture the first of these recent shows, the one year anniversary show for Baby’s All Right where Caveman debuted six new songs. We are streaming the excellent “Without You” below, at the beginning of which lead singer Matthew Iwanusa announced that its from “a record that will not come out anytime soon”. We’re not sure why that’s the case since the band seems to have enough solid material for another strong album, and the songs seem very much to be finished. We checked over at Fat Possum Records, where Caveman still appears to be an active artist, so for now we can just enjoy these songs and wait for official news. The Baby’s show also included a nice selection of older material from the band’s first two albums, and finished with a lengthy Vampirer/Old Friend that we’re also streaming below. There are no current tour dates for Caveman, so we’ll assume they’re still recording the new album.

This set was recorded by House FOH Devin, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed on the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

Thee Oh Sees: November 18, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Last week Thee Oh Sees played four shows in four days in NYC and we were fortunate to catch what was most certainly the best sounding show of the week. In our many attempts to capture the live lo-fi garage rock of this amazing band, we’ve been frustrated by a series of sound issues that have prevented our capture of Thee Oh Sees with a recording that their highly energetic performances really deserve. We came close with the historic night at 285 Kent last Fall, but nothing we’ve ever presented from this band can even approach the sound of this particular show. Of course the lion’s share of the credit for the superb sound quality of Tuesday’s TOS show is credited to Bowery Ballroom (and their staff), which continues to be the best sounding room in town. The band itself was completely on during this set. They were scheduled to play forty-five minutes and instead played over an hour. And even given the lack of an encore, John Dwyer and company played virtually every song they’ve played this tour including four outstanding new numbers. We’re streaming “Tidal Wave”, which was the third song in a very high octane three-fer that opened the show. Thee Oh Sees tour continues in Chicago this week before ultimately moving West, dates here.

I recorded this show with the Schoeps in our tradition balcony location and mixed with a terrific board feed from FOH Bowery legend Kenny. As noted above, the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Dream Syndicate: November 15 and 16, 2014 Rough Trade – Flac/MP3/Streaming

In 2012, a European superfan of Steve Wynn convinced him to reunite the Dream Syndicate for a festival in Barcelona and eventually the reunion became the 30th anniversary tour. But frustratingly for fans in his adopted home town, Steve had not returned with the band to NYC. In fact, there had only been a handful of US dates thus far, the first of which was 2013’s Solid Sound Festival. This past weekend’s two-fer at Rough Trade remedied the slight as New York received two outstanding performances of the band in full sync. Dream Syndicate had several personnel changes during its original eight-year tenure as Steve and drummer Dennis Duck were the only consistent band members. This version of the Dream Syndicate featured bassist Mark Walton, the longest tenured bass player who joined for the second album and remained through the band’s demise in 1989. This time around the lead guitar is a very familiar face to Steve Wynn fans — his longtime guitar partner Jason Victor who has performed many of these very songs live with the Miracle Three. The fortunate aspect of having to wait a couple of years for the reunion tour to reach NYC is that the band is truly operating on all cylinders and really clicking as a unit. There were many moments of inspired improv during the two show run, including a foray into “Morning Dew” during “Coltrane” on Saturday and a well developed “Marquee Moon” jam in the midst of an extended “Halloween” at Sunday’s show. The setlist for each night included just about all the songs you’d hope to hear at a Dream Syndicate show and a few tasty covers. Steve promised and delivered a different show for Sunday, subbing in a few deep tracks and re-arranging the list, but each show was equally satisfying and clearly worth the wait.

The Dream Syndicate perform their final show of the year at the Echoplex in Los Angeles this weekend, Saturday November 22.

The November 15 show was recorded by Kubacheck with his MBHO cards from a stand inside of the soundboard booth and the recording is an outstanding capture. I recorded the November 16 show from the same exact location with the Schoeps cards mixed with an excellent board feed provided by talented house FOH Kyle. Its is a super listen. Enjoy!

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: October 13 and 26, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Australia’s neo-psych phenoms King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard were here in New York during the Summer and made a bit of a splash. We saw them open for Thee Oh Sees at McCarren Park and could definitely see their talents, but conditions (crazy wind, early set time) didn’t allow us to see the band’s full potential. Baby’s All Right gave King Gizzard a multi-show residency back in June, so when the band returned to NYC for much of October it was perhaps fitting that we should capture them at their homebase away from home. Baby’s offers Gizz what they need to thrive — the right sized room, an adoring audience and a welcoming vibe. And thrive they did. The band played multiple shows at Baby’s including several CMJ shows. We were fortunate to capture the first of those October shows, and the last. On October 13, The King Gizzard set was truly what I had hoped to see when I saw the band’s potential back in June. This was a full-on psych-rock assault with dual-lead guitars, dual-drummers and all manner of non-traditional instruments (flute!). The new King Gizzard album I’m In Your Mind Fuzz came out at the end of the month, but two weeks early we got nearly the whole thing, beginning with the tremendous five-song segue that opens the album to also start the show. That mini-set literally never let up in its astounding energy. When the band finally came up for air a good twenty minutes into the set, you could almost hear an exhale from the crowd and feel a collective realization that this band had truly arrived — lots of mouthed wows and head shakes. Gizz was on and the room was electric. The remainder of the set was equally outstanding, including the end of the show which featured two extended jam sessions and finished with the band’s epic “Head On/Pill”.

At the end of the CMJ week, the appropriately named annual “CMJ Hangover Brunch” hosted by Panache Booking featured a completely different King Gizzard set from earlier in the month. This event was conceived as a quieter, more mellow experience and the Gizz played off that idea. The pared down version of the band displayed their talents at singing/songwriting and it was no less compelling than the psych-out aspect of the band. The October 26 set featured only two songs from the new album, the aptly named “Slow Jam” songs. After the set we had a nice chat with band leader Stu MacKenzie, an intelligent and thoughtful guy whose personality is well captured in this excellent piece in Interview Magazine.

King Gizzard is back in Australia and not likely to tour the US again until the Summer of 2015, but those shows will be events not to miss.

I also recorded the crazy Halloween show and that will be on the site within the next few weeks.

Both of these shows were recorded and mixed in the exact same manner by Baby’s FOH Devin. We blended the room mics with his excellent multitrack mix and the sound quality of each is superb, truly capturing the completely different feel of each of the sets. Enjoy!

I will admit that I just never got the Beets. Back last decade, in an era when every band’s vocals were steeped in reverb and instruments were as “garage” as possible, the Beets took it to the extreme, creating a muddy and harsh sound that some found inspired but that I believed was over the top. I’ll also admit to mailing in the post for my one Beets recording that ended up on the site six years ago. But who knew that buried underneath all of those exaggerated garage effects was an extraordinarily talented singer and songwriter. Juan Wauters solo career has been a revelation thus far. My best comparison would be to a modern day Jonathan Richman — if JoJo was Uruguayan and from Queens. Juan has an ease about his performing style and like Richman, straddles the fine line between sincerity and humor, often keeping it so close to the vest that you’re not entirely sure whether he’s putting you on, or telling you something that you need to hear, or even both. Last year, his debut album on Captured Tracks N.A.P. (North American Poetry) was a collection of home recordings made over a two year period and seems to have just scratched the surface of his talents. We’ve seen Juan Wauters twice in the last month, including this set as part of the outstanding Panache Booking’s “CMJ Hangover Brunch”, where Juan played as a duo in a makeshift “stage” in front of the outer room bar at Baby’s All Right. While the setlist did include four songs from NAP, it also included five terrific new numbers including our favorites “I’m All Wrong” and “Let the Mystery Be There” (streaming below). The quality of the new material bodes very well for Juan’s next release which we expect will be soon, since he just released a video for a new song “Nena”. Juan Wauters will be touring Europe for much of November and December, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards on-stage and mixed with a feed from the PA used to power the vocals and Juan’s acoustic guitar. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Amanda X released one of my favorite albums of 2014, Amnesia. Its an album of straightforward gazey-dreamy guitar rock with influences as wide as 80’s Bostonians Salem 66, 90’s Northwesterners Sleater-Kinney, and the aughts Brooklynites Vivian Girls. The band has received quite a bit of positive press in their hometown Philadelphia, but it was a local booking by Edan at Death By Audio that put them on my radar. When they accepted our very early CMJ invite, we were delighted to see that word got out quickly and Amanda X ended up playing a bunch of shows that week. For our show, we placed them right smack in the middle of the nine bands, late enough in the day to draw a pretty decent crowd. And draw they did. Amanda X’s set was short but sweet and the fans in the room were quick to see what the excitement is all about. Back home now, the band earlier this week played a nice high-profile gig opening for Parkay Quarts at Philly MOCA.

Acidjack recorded this show in the exact same manner as the previous sets from this show (Schoeps Onstage + SBD) and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!
